Boy on Hold by JD Spero – Review by Angela Hayes

Boy on HoldBoy on Hold by J.D. Spero
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Boy On Hold is my first read by J.D Spero, and I am happy to say that it won’t be my last. This is a surprising little gem- a young adult thriller- with murder, crime, trauma, loss, grief, secrets, family dynamics, mental illness, love, emotion, forgiveness, drama, and suspense. The story is told from several points of view- which gave me a really well-rounded perspective of what was happening and added extra depth to the overall story.
When Henry Trout (Hen) witnesses a shocking incident, he is left reeling- and soon his (and his family’s) life is turned upside down when his older brother is arrested for the crime. His brother’s troubling behaviour, family secrets, and the truth all wrestle- while family bonds begin to unravel. Within all this heartbreak though, lies a wonderfully touching story full of hope. I don’t want to reveal too much- as this is one of those books I think is best read knowing as little as possible, and letting the story and characters reveal themselves along the way.
Well done!

Thank you, J.D Spero!

Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5)Martimus by Seelie Kay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Martimus by Seelie Kay is the fifth book in the Feisty Lawyers series. This can be read as a standalone book, but I recommend reading the whole series. This is a good read with steamy romance woven into a suspenseful crime story. I enjoy how there is a nice mix between the steaminess and the suspense. Also, the characters are interesting and keep me on my toes. The stories between the books become somewhat formulaic, but the author counteracts this with good dialogue and interesting characters. I have enjoyed several of this author’s books and will be keeping her on my watch list in the future.

The Equalizer: Foxxy’s Tipping Point (Foxxy: The Equalizer Book 1)
By Allyson R. Abbott
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book The Equalizer: Foxxy’s Tipping Point (Foxxy: The Equalizer Book 1) by Allyson R. Abbott. I loved the character of Foxxy. She is intelligent, strong, and cares for others. She finds herself noticed by a handsome stranger who is determined that she is the one for him. Foxxy finds herself being offered hope, a new life, and revenge for what Eddie, her pimp, has done to her and others. What does the future hold for Foxxy? Will she accept the handsome stranger’s offer? Read this book to find out. This is a story that had my emotions going up and down. I grew to care about Foxxy and wanted her to be happy. I also enjoyed reading about the handsome stranger that she meets. He believes that Foxxy is the perfect woman for him. I love that the story pulled me in, and I felt like I was right there with the characters. The book has romantic moments and times that I was turning pages to find out what was going to happen next. Don’t miss out on a story that is intriguing and entertaining. I highly recommend reading it.

Boy on HoldBoy on Hold by J.D. Spero
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Boy on Hold by JD Spero. This book is geared toward young adult but I loved it and would read it again. Its the story of a single mom Marcella Trout and her boys Hen and Tyler. Tyler has just turned 17 and is the typical angry moody 17 year old. They live in a small town in the Adirondack’s. The family is very dysfunctional as are most families anymore. Anyway they have a tradition of a night called Cabbage night where kids go out and pull pranks all night. Hen has gone outside looking for a pet Hedgehog and instead sees something he will never get over. He witnesses one of his favorite people become the victim of murder and not long after his brother Tyler gets arrested for that murder. Does Hen have the answer to help his brother or did Tyler really kill his friend. As the Detectives begin to investigate some of the Trout families deep dark secrets come out. Will the Trout family survive all in one piece or will they break beyond the point of no return?

Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5)Martimus by Seelie Kay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I give Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5) by Seelie Kay, 4 stars.

This is another great addition to a fantastic series in romantic suspense. There is plenty of action as well as the kind of romance that would make your mom blush. If you are familiar with the series, you will know how well the author blends these into a story you cannot put down. The main story in this one is generally the same yet still completely different. There is much to follow, but it is not confusing at all.

The characters are another part of what makes this book. If you have read the series, you will recognize the the, but they continue to grow and we learn so much more about some of them. You may learn that some aren’t so bad, where others are horrible.

If you are a fan of steamy suspense, this book and series are for you. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading them all because they are so good.

I can’t believe we are already five books into this series. This book had me trying to speed read to see what happened next and I was not disappointed.

It was nice to see what was going on with this group and see how their lives are changing.

This is was the type of book to keep you at the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next. From the party at the beginning to the very end you are involved and unable and unwilling to extract yourself from the story.

This is a great series and cannot recommend it enough.

What a great book Boy on Hold by JD Spero is. A good clean little who done it, although the culprits are given to you early, this story is built around giving you the clues to build the case yourself. I love how Hen comes to learn about truth and how he learns about forgiveness. The way the author shares an awareness about schizophrenia is great. I love really good stories that teach us something on the journey. And this is a good story. Even a very tasteful romance. A good clean read…. you can’t go wrong with this book.

I enjoyed this book. This is the second book in this series which I enjoyed just as much if not more than the first. This is a well developed story that kept me turning pages to the end. I had no problem connecting with the characters. They made the story engaging and made it easy to read. They pulled me into the story with ease and made me a part of it. In this story we have Aaron and Branson who are identical twins. There is a third twin, David, but he lives in one of the other twins minds. When their mom gets sick, David starts really coming out. What will happen when he does? This story has a few twists and turns that left me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. This is a fast paced page turner that I highly recommend.

Ashes To Ashes Boxset (books 1-3) by Rowena Holloway – Review by Angela Hayes

Ashes To Ashes Boxset (books 1-3)Ashes To Ashes Boxset by Rowena Holloway
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Stars

The Ashes to Ashes series has arrived in a boxed set!!! What a great way to explore this gripping series by Rowena Holloway– without having to wait between books. This is a brilliant psychological suspense- with plenty of gripping moments that will have you flipping the pages, reading along to find out how everything plays out.
The boxed set contains:

Bad Things Happen (Book One)
Bad Things Happen is the first book in the Ashes to Ashes series by Rowena Holloway. This proved to be a bit of a dark mystery- full of danger, suspense, deadly consequences, secrets, hard truths, cover-ups, and so much more.
Charlotte Ashe is an Aussie working in London, as the weather girl/reporter for TVWE. She is idealistic and ambitious- and aspires to be taken more seriously and eventually get to report on more hard-hitting stories. She thinks the right story may have just landed in her lap, a scoop that may just open all the doors she’s been dreaming of. But things take a dangerous turn and Charlotte will need to uncover the truth, before it’s all too late.
This book definitely has a psychological, edge of your seat, and suspenseful storyline. I was pulled into the story quite quickly and devoured it in one sitting, just to find out how everything was tied up in the end.

Less You Know (Book Two)
Less You Know is the second book in the Ashes to Ashes series by Rowena Holloway. This is quite a gripping suspense, with drama, mystery, danger, secrets, action, discoveries, twists, intrigue, and lots of tension.
We met Charlotte Ashe in the previous book- and once again follow her on her latest ‘investigation’. Her journalistic senses drive her to try to prove Tyrone Garner, former football star, now turned property developer, and all-round Mr. Popular- is actually a huge fraud.
She, along with her friend Allie, engage in some reconnaissance in order to uncover ‘evidence’. But Allie has secrets of her own, and when she disappears, Charlotte not only feels guilty for placing her friend in danger, but will also need to get to the bottom of everything, putting all the pieces together. Secrets will be revealed. Questions will be raised. Charlotte will be tested, and left questioning everything she thought she knew.
This story is definitely clever, edge of your seat reading. I was immediately hooked and couldn’t put it down until I’d read every word. As I expected, another great read from this talented author!

From The Ashes (Book Three)
OMG Charlotte has been through quite a lot since we first met her back in book one. This series has taken me on quite the journey, and has all led to this point. I have loved each book, but I definitely think Ms. Holloway has left the best till last.
From the Ashes is the third, and final book in the Ashes to Ashes series by Rowena Holloway. It is an intense psychological thriller that will tie you up in knots with the tightly woven and twisty plot. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the story- scrambling to read as quickly as I could so I could unravel the mystery, and put all the pieces together, before the final reveal. But, I had so many scenarios running through my head- Ms. Holloway twisted and turned the plot so well that I was left guessing right till the end.
I loved the gripping suspense, psychological ploys, clever mystery, dramatic developments, heightened tension, and intense danger which Ms. Holloway managed to imbue her story with. She definitely knows how to weave a great tale, and keep her readers glued to the pages.
I was both excited, and a little sad to get my hands on this book- as I really wanted to continue Charlotte’s journey, but at the same time I knew that this would be the concluding chapter. So, it has been a bit of a bittersweet experience.
Charlotte Ashe enters this story having had her life turned upside down. She’s been through so much- at the cost of her career, reputation, credibility, friendships, and even to a degree, her self-respect. She has one ‘play’ left- and she throws herself into it headfirst. Her continuing obsession with Tyrone Gardner leads her to Blaxon Hall, a private ‘clinic’, where her journalistic senses recognise the threads of a story. She needs this story to pan out, because she’s got a lot riding on the outcome. Charlotte uncovers some mystery surrounding the recent deaths at the hall- and this is where the story really ramps up in intensity and interest. Charlotte couldn’t possibly predict the ensuing events- placing herself in incredible danger along the way. What will she sacrifice in order to get to the bottom of this investigation? Because when a fire breaks out at the hall, Charlotte is one of the missing people, What happened, you ask? Well, I don’t want to spoil it for you- so I really recommend grabbing yourself a copy of this fantastic thriller, and discover all the gripping developments for yourself.
WOW… this story is definitely a clever, edge of your seat read- and as I expected, is another great story from Rowena Holloway.

So, what are you waiting for? If you love a great psychological suspense- with plenty of twists and turns- then you won’t want to miss this exciting boxed set.
I really can’t wait to see what Ms. Holloway does next!

Thank you, Ms. Holloway!

Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5)Martimus by Seelie Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fifth of the Feisty Lawyers series from Seelie Kay, and probably one of my favorite ones yet. I have read the other books in the series before diving into this one and I feel like while you could read them separately you would enjoy the book and series much more if they were read together and in order. I also have enjoyed watching Kay’s writing grow and flourish into what it is today. I loved this one because it threw in a bit of a mythical piece with the Martimus addition and I really felt that it gave this book so much dimension and intrigue that it was hard to put this down. In Martimus we find Agent Cate working on a new case of trying to find missing socialites. Things get a bit chaotic and starts to play with her relationships. I really enjoyed how things were shared in a way that you felt like you were on the edge of your seat to see how things would work out for Cate. I can sure say that this is one ending you won’t see coming, but it is absolutely perfect! I can’t wait to see what we will get next from Seelie Kay!

Not just another adventure in a suspenseful setting. The adventure begins with 8 missing women, and nobody knows of their disappearance, until the wrong girl goes missing. Upon investigation, there is so much more than expected. Is it human trafficking? Is it for money, if so how much? How about drugs? Follow Cate and the group as they work their way through another tough and challenging case.

Seelie Kay takes us through the wringer with this one. Get out the tissues, and get ready to take a ride on this new roller coaster. Martimus was not what I expected. But I was in no way disappointed. Seelie Kay has an unforgettable imagination, and will keep you wanting more. You can tell she brings her all, while reading this story. I love her characters, especially the strong-willed, independent women. This is a must read! Along with the rest of her Feisty Lawyers Series. Well Done Seelie Kay, Well Done.

Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5)Martimus by Seelie Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Martimus is already the fifth book in Seelie Kay’s Feisty Lawyers series. I cannot believe we are already at book number 5, it feels as if we just started! You could try to read the book as a standalone but I don’t know why one would do that as in my head the series builds the tension one book after another and you feel as if you know the gang and …yeah, do yourself a favour and start from the beginning!
Martimus gives us Agent Cate Creighton’s story who needs to figure out what is going on with all those socialites with influential parents disappearing while navigating her new relationship with a former US Navy Seal Warren Hazelton. Throw into the mix our favourite MI-6 agent Tillie Henderson and you will end up sitting at the edge of your seat until the last page! I think that the series gets better and better with each book and I cannot wait what the sixth book will throw at us!

Virtually Gone (High-Tech Crime Solvers #6)Virtually Gone by Jacquie Biggar
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Virtually Gone by Jacquie Biggar is the sixth book in the High-Tech Crime Solvers series. This is a story full of suspense and intrigue that certainly keeps the pages turning.
The characters in this book have been well crafted. I liked the relationship between the two partners, I felt like they complimented each other well. Each seemed to the make up for the others flaws. They were determined to solve this case and find the person responsible and it was easy to feel their urgency behind it.
The story was also really well developed. I wanted to find out what was going on and to see how the book would turn out. I thought the author did a great job of keeping you guessing with some well timed twists and turns. It was a suspenseful story that definitely kept me interested. I enjoyed reading this book and will look forward to more in the future.

Boundaries (Scope of Practice Book 1)
by Jessica Aiken-Hall
5 out of 5 stars

I was drawn to Boundaries for several reasons. Perhaps the biggest one was that I had read Jessica Aiken-Hall’s memoir a while back and the raw and honest storytelling had me recovering for days and I was curious to see how memorable her writing would be in another avenue of writing.
Knowing what the author has disclosed of her past and the synopsis and excerpts from Boundaries, I anticipated an intense ride and I don’t know the last time I held so much hope and excitement before starting a novel.
As I had hoped and honestly expected, Boundaries was an excellent, captivating story. Unique and gripping, I couldn’t put the story down shortly after I started and I wholeheartedly heartedly look forward to more in the Scope of Practice series. 5 star rating for sure.

Valerie Williamson is about to find out what it takes to make someone really snap….She is a social worker, and between being forced to start a trauma support group and the death of a 19 year old, by the name of Cameran Davidson, she is pushed outside of her comfort zone.
Valerie has always kept strict boundaries, which make her a little distant and never like getting too close. These barriers stem from her past, which have earned herself the reputation as the anti-social social worker. But the days of playing it safe are well and truly over.

When Valerie hears stories from the members of the group , the fire from her past explodes. A trauma that is coming back to haunt her. She has to do what she knows is right, and some boundaries that need to be crossed. She is about to discover a lot more than she bargained for, that is guaranteed.

Boundaries is the first book in the Scope of Practice series and a very enjoyable read. It is fast paced, full of action, suspense and the characters are very relatable. There is also humour thrown into the story too, which is really refreshing.
The story was very well written, therefore, it made me race through the book. Really looking forward to the next instalment.

Ashes To Ashes Boxset (books 1-3) by Rowena Holloway – Review by Jenni Bishop

Ashes To Ashes Boxset (books 1-3)Ashes To Ashes Boxset by Rowena Holloway
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ashes to Ashes boxed set is a group of Psychological suspense thrillers that will keep you on the edge of your set and heart pumping. What could be better than having them all there so you don’t have to wait, because you won’t want to.

Bad Things Happen: Gripping Psychological Suspense (Ashes to Ashes Book 1) by Rowena Holloway is full of dark secrets and fraught with danger. This psychological thriller will have you on the edge of your seat while the suspense keeps you on your toes. The story often goes back in time but does so little by little just giving you a hint of a little bit more until the whole truth is revealed and boy does it have some twists. Charlotte Ashe is a weather girl working in London. When a hint of a story is thrown her way, little did she know that it would come with deadly consequences, secrets and lies, painful truths and so many cover ups that she would never be the same. With so many players uncovering the truth from the lies, before it’s too late may just be her undoing.

Less You Know: gripping suspense (Ashes to Ashes Book 2) is the second book in the series and you really need to read Bad Things Happen, the first book in the series as it lays the groundwork for this book. Less You Know is a psychological thriller that is dangerous, full of secrets and suspense and is full of many twists and turns that you don’t know what is going to happen, even when you think you do. Rowena’s skillful writing takes you on a gripping journey where you don’t know who is who and what is what. Charlotte Ashe once again finds herself in the thick of things when her friend is missing. Investigating is in her blood but at what cost. The closer she gets, the more she finds out and the more danger she is in, shows just how much she doesn’t know who her friend is and the many secrets she holds.

From The Ashes (Ashes to Ashes #3) is the third book in the Ashes to Ashes series. I recommend reading the previous books before this one. This story starts off with a bang. It’s intense right from the beginning and you just can’t stop reading. Part of what makes this book so suspenseful is the back and forth of the timeline. It keeps the answers just out of reach and creates the drive to keep focused so you can figure it all out. I won’t get into details, because I don’t want to give away any of the plot turns. Suffice it to say, this book is spectacularly suspenseful, marvelously mysterious, and a dangerously delicious read.

Boundaries (Scope of Practice Book 1)Boundaries by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book really made me think about my boundaries. Jessica Aiken-Hall does a masterful job in this suspenseful, mystery, crime genre. There are twists and turns and drama around every corner. The main character is smart, witty, and an introvert. This story kept me at the edge of my seat. Valerie is the “anti-social social worker”. She works with people who are primarily dead. This is one part of her job she likes. She has boundaries and she sticks to them. If you have boundaries how willing are you to cross them. In this book, Valerie has to cross them. I highly recommend this story. It will keep you going to the last word.

Boundaries (Scope of Practice, #1)Boundaries by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Boundaries is the first book in the Scope of Practice series by Jessica Aiken-Hall. It was not at all what I expected, but I still enjoyed it. I am curious to see what will come in a followup book. The book centers around Valerie Williamson, an anti-social social worker for a hospital. Her office is in the basement, and rarely gets visitors, as she likes it. She has closed herself off from the world for half her life, but I will not say why. It is a big reveal that guides the direction of the story. Her boss instructed her to start a support group for those suffering trauma. At first she hates the idea, but after the first session yields a small group of women, she discovers maybe she needs this group as much as they need her. There are a couple interesting turn of events, but I don’t want to spoil anything. I will just say, I didn’t see it coming.

Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5) by Seelie Kay – Review by Kerry Baker

Martimus (Feisty Lawyers Book 5)Martimus by Seelie Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Martimus by Seelie Kay is the fifth book in the Feisty Lawyers series. This is a brilliant series with strong storylines and even stronger characters.
This book drew me in immediately. The story was such an intriguing one and I was desperate to see how they would pull their plans off. The whole way through I found myself trying to figure the whole thing out and found myself jumping from one idea to the next. The author keeps the book exciting with twists and turns the whole way through.
So far this book has to be my favourite of the series. It really had me hooked and I could not put it down until the last page – and even after that I found myself thinking about it! This is a fantastic book and I would recommend giving the whole series a read!

Boundaries (Scope of Practice Book 1) by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Jenni Bishop

Boundaries (Scope of Practice Book 1)Boundaries by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Boundaries (Scope of Practice Book 1) by Jessica Aiken-Hall is a heavy read but an intriguing crime read. It touches on hideous crimes that were committed on these characters and what that does to them. It is a very emotive and suspenseful story where events eventuate that you did not see coming. It shows just how far someone is willing to go to right wrongs even they did not see coming. Is revenge as sweet as it sounds?

Overworked and underpaid Valerie is told she is to run a support group that deals with people and trauma. Trauma she can deal with people not so much. Little did she realise but she finds herself becoming more immense in the group and boundaries are thrown out the window.

I have seen a sneak peak of the next book in the series and can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Girl Trap (Madeline Dawkins #3)Girl Trap by Cynthia Hamilton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Girl Trap is the third book in the Madeline Dawkins series by Cynthia Hamilton is such a suspenseful book. I have read all the books in this series so far and I swear it gets better with each book. This storyline is amazing and the author writes it and its characters so amazing that you feel yourself being pulled into the book. Mike and Madeline are working on 2 cases at the same time in this book that take their toll on these characters when things are revealed. Can they solve both mysteries apart and come out on top? You will be hooked at the edge of your seat reading this book, as I could not put it down.

Boy on HoldBoy on Hold by J.D. Spero
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a heartbreaking story about a young person suffering from mental illness. It was really well written that allowed you to really understand what it feels like to suffer from this illness and how it effects everyone’s lifes not just the person who has it.

Henry loves with his mum and his big brother Tyler. Tyler is struggling with mental health problems but his mum is so focused on being a good mum and providing for her two boys that she doesn’t see the signs or her sons struggles.

That is until their next door neighbour is attacked in her home. No ones knows who has done it but the two main suspects are Tyler and his friend Derek.

All evidence points to Tyler as the main suspect but his mother and Henry don’t believe it.

Was it Tyler who committed the horrible crime or was it Derek? Was Tyler in sound mind or was it voices pushing him forwards.

A Book Signing To Die For: Beach Reads by Judy Moore – Review by Kayla Interdonato

A Book Signing To Die ForA Book Signing To Die For by Judy Moore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Book Signing To Die For is a wonderful murder mystery novel by Judy Moore. Beck O’Rourke is a lover of mysteries, just like her mother. She owns a bookstore and coffee shop, Beach Reads, with her grandmother in Manatee Beach, Florida. Beck, her grandmother, and Beck’s little sister Lizzie live above the bookstore. Beck tries hard to make the bookstore a local hang out place, but her grandmother is stuck in her ways and is strictly business. With a bestselling mystery writer coming to do a book signing, Beck is super excited, until someone from the audience dies! Now Beck can use all her detective skills she gained from her mystery novels to try to catch the killer. She’s able to make a little head way but some people aren’t happy with her progress. This novel was entertaining, enthralling, and kept me on my toes. Just when I thought I knew who the killer was, I would be thrown a curveball. I highly recommend this mystery and look forward to reading other stories by this author.
