El Diablo: A Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Novel (Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Series Book 2)El Diablo: A Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Novel by Kathryn Dodson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was such an amazing and suspenseful read by a magnificent author! It is the second book in the Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense series. I have enjoyed many books but this author and this one is no different! I didn’t realize it was part of a series initially, so I read it without any prior background on the plot or characters. I think it did pretty well as a standalone, but it has piqued my interest which made me circle back and pick up the first book! Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of a thriller that had twists and turns throughout the entire story. Just when I thought I had something figured out, the author threw me a curveball! Jessica is such a phenomenal main character that is very well developed. She feels more like someone you know rather than a character in a book. The flow of the story was flawless and everything unfolded so naturally. I sat down to read it as soon as I saw the gorgeous cover and the next thing I knew, I had finished the whole thing. If you enjoy thrillers that are packed full of action, danger, and suspense, this should be your next read. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next!

El Diablo: A Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Novel (Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Series Book 2)El Diablo: A Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Novel by Kathryn Dodson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jessica left behind a life of danger to have a ‘normal’ life. She married her best friend and is a paralegal. As time goes on, she starts to miss the dangerous past. When her friends daughter tells her about a pastor who seems to be preying on young teenage girls, Jessica takes it upon herself to investigate the man. The man also just so happened to be a client of her boss who just closed on a property.

This man seems sleazy but very charismatic so everyone seems to love him and think he is a wonderful man. Jessica seems to be the only one to see through his facade. Jessica wants to protect the innocent girls but she will have to delve back into her dangerous past.

I love Jessica as a character. She is so caring and willing to put herself in a bad spot if she thought you were in danger. She tries so hard to move on from her past but it doesn’t seem to want to let her go. Even though this is a series, you can read this book as a stand alone. It has enough detail that you won’t be confused. There is mention of the previous book but only in passing. The author has a way with making the story come to life. Twists and turns, there’s never a dull moment.

El Diablo: A Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Novel (Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Series Book 2)El Diablo: A Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Novel by Kathryn Dodson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense series. I do recommend reading these in order because there is a lot of character details in this first book that will make this book even more enjoyable. I loved Jessica’s character, she has been through a lot( as you find out in the first book) and she has struggled to get where she is today but she is a strong determined woman who wants to protect those more vulnerable that she is and that is what she sets out to do in this story. This is a story that is gripping, filled with tension and danger, crimes, family, emotions and loads more. Once I started I couldn’t put this book down.

We are back with Jessica in this story. When she hears stories about a Pastor who is at the local high school maybe taking advantage of girls on the Christian group she knows she needs to investigate to get to the bottom of who Pastor Wright is really up to.
He is a man of god spreading the good word and helping young girls through life or is all that just a cover up for something more sinister?
Jessica knows she has to battle and face her own demons from her past while also embracing the ruthless, risk taking side of herself that she thought was left in the past. Just how far is Jessica prepared to go to find out the truth? And what will it cost her to play this game of cat and mouse with a dangerous opponent?
This book was really well written that I couldn’t put it down until the end.

El Diablo, Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Series, Kathryn Dodson, Review, Itsy Bitsy Book Bits, Crime, Suspense by Joanne ellis

Kathryn Dodson’s *El Diablo* is a gripping and intense thriller that plunges readers into a world where danger lurks beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary lives. This novel tells the story of Jessica, a former adrenaline junkie who is thrust back into the heart of darkness when she decides to take on the case of a youth pastor accused of disturbing behavior. What begins as a quest for justice quickly spirals into a harrowing game of cat-and-mouse with a sadistic criminal hiding behind a mask of piety.

Jessica is a compelling protagonist, driven by a complex mix of guilt, anger, and a thirst for justice. Her past as an adrenaline junkie gives her an edge, making her a fearless, if not reckless, amateur detective. However, as she delves deeper into the investigation, it becomes clear that she’s not just battling an external threat—she’s also fighting her own inner demons. Dodson does an excellent job of fleshing out Jessica’s character, showing how her quest to bring down the criminal forces her to confront the parts of herself she had hoped to leave behind.

The novel’s antagonist, a psychopath who manipulates others while hiding behind a veneer of righteousness, is chillingly portrayed. The contrast between his public persona and the monstrous reality adds a layer of tension that keeps the reader on edge throughout the story. The cat-and-mouse dynamic between Jessica and this villain is the driving force of the narrative, with each encounter escalating in intensity and danger.

Set against the backdrop of an unforgiving desert, *El Diablo* is as much about survival as it is about solving a mystery. The harsh environment mirrors the brutal psychological and physical challenges that Jessica faces. Dodson’s descriptions of the desert are vivid and atmospheric, creating a sense of isolation and peril that heightens the suspense.

The novel’s pacing is relentless, with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, Dodson throws in another curveball, making *El Diablo* a true page-turner. The action scenes are well-crafted and pulse-pounding, but it’s the psychological tension that truly sets this thriller apart.

At its core, *El Diablo* is a story about the thin line between good and evil, and the lengths to which a person will go to seek justice. Jessica’s journey is one of self-discovery as much as it is about stopping a criminal. Dodson expertly explores themes of redemption, guilt, and the dark side of human nature, making this novel not only a suspenseful read but also a thought-provoking one.

*El Diablo* is perfect for fans of gritty mysteries and heart-pounding suspense. Kathryn Dodson has crafted a story that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant, with a protagonist who is as complex as she is courageous. The novel’s blend of psychological depth, relentless action, and unexpected twists will keep readers hooked from start to finish. If you’re looking for a thriller that doesn’t pull its punches, *El Diablo* is a must-read.

Notebook Mysteries ~ Art of DeceptionNotebook Mysteries ~ Art of Deception by Kimberly Mullins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Our favorite mystery-solving duo is back again in this great addition to the Notebook Mysteries series. Emma, with Jeremy by her side again, has a new case. Their very pregnant friend Peggy has contacted them because her brother has gone missing. When he is found deceased, the case is afoot! While they’re used to working on jobs together, they are not used to having to factor in family related responsibilities while they do.

While they already wanted to quickly solve the case for Peggy’s sake, when multiple suspects appear with an interest in money from the victim, it becomes apparent that if they don’t quickly find the solution that it may be too late to catch the culprit. Layers of mystery and lots of chaos are loaded into the newest addition to the series. As usual, the story is beautifully well written with tons of great visuals and historical aspects to get you in the scene. This can be read as a standalone, but the world is so well described and the character building throughout the series is a joy to follow from book 1. Another win!

After finding many readers enjoying this series, I decided to give a try with their holiday novella and now with this new selection. Although I do plan on going back from the beginning of the series to get a better understanding of the characters’ background, you can simply pick this one up as a stand alone story. I absolutely love detective stories, especially those with a strong female lead as the detective. Emma and Jeremy have grown as investigators from their previous cases and have become sought out commodities when things go awry. When a family member goes missing and then found murdered, the family reaches out to Emma and Jeremy to help in discovering many unanswered questions about the situation. One thing after another is a mystery, such as random and recent relocation to Chicago, sudden departure and traveling alone and past life unknown. The story takes you through a journey of adventure, intrigue, twists and turns.

The story does start out very slow, however it does pick up the pace at about a quarter of the way through the story. The author does catch the reader’s attention with the details of the minor characters in the story. The smallest of details does make a difference especially when it is out of the ordinary. The main character, Jessica, is relatable in some aspects, i.e., what she’s feeling towards her mother and trying to stay on the straight and narrow path. Overall, it is a good read when you want some suspense.

Jessica Watts is at it again. Yet this one is my favorite. Jessica is balancing her personal life with helping innocent others. The story will not only keep you reading, it will keep you on the edge of your seat. This story has enough suspense that you can’t help but forget the world around you as you just have to keep turning the pages. This author has a way with words. Her stories are intriguing and filled with the tension only a great story can sink you into. I love this story! It is an unbelievable rollercoaster ride of emotions. As always I look forward to reading so much more from this author.

This is the 7th book in the Notebook Mysteries Series. I have loved every one of these cosy mysteries. They are historical mysteries set in a time in the past which the author does an amazing job of bringing that time period to life for the reader. This is a story of murder, secrets, deception, danger, friendship, family and mystery.
When Emma’s ex flame Tony cames to her looking for helps, she and Jeremy don’t hesitate to jump at the case.
Tony’s brother in law has been found murdered and no one can understand why.
Now Jeremy and Emma and their team have to solve the mystery of this case. Was was Peggy’s brother murdered? Was it a targeted attack or could Peggy be in danger? What exactly will they uncover about the brother Peggy hasn’t seen in years?

As with all these stories they can be read as standalones as they focus on different cases however that being said I have a feeling once you read one you will want to read them all.
If you like cosy mysteries with a strong determined female slueth then i definately recommend reading these books

Every book in this series just hits the spot. As with the rest of this series, I love the mixture of historical fiction, detective mystery, and more directed at YA. The suspense, the characters, the crime aspects all make for a thrilling read every time. I really didn’t know what was going to happen and the pacing just keeps moving so this felt like a quick read. Highly recommend picking up all the books in this series, but even just this one for the fun of it all.

I have to say that Jessica Watts is in my top 5 favorite female main characters, she is strong willed, tough, independent and so much more. The author pays such attention to details that it makes the story so realistic and believable. It is fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more but also not wanting it to end. lots of twists and turns, suspense, adventure, danger and the characters are just so well written. Despite her wins demons that haunt her she has to get to the bottom of everything and protect innocents that are being prayed upon …. Predators are vindictive , cruel , sly and vindictive but she’s not giving up the fight so easily no matter the threat ….

Jessica is fiercely protective and she finds herself in danger of not only her life but loosing her family , marriage and her job but again she’s determined to expose the “ good pastor” , he’s pure evil if you ask me !

All I can say is be prepared for the unexpected 🥴

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have really enjoyed reading the Notebook Mysteries series. Kimberly Mullins is an amazing author who pays special attention to details while writing her mystery books. This allows the reader to delve into the process of trying to solve the mystery right along with our main characters. I love that each story in this series continues to build upon the characters’ backstories, making them more and more dynamic as we delve deeper into their pasts and examine their current relationships with one another. It is also amazing that any one of the books in this series can be read as a stand-alone, although I recommend you read all of the series from the beginning, which is something I am going to go back and do since I jumped into reading the middle of this series. The characters are so relatable, the settings are realistic, and the events that happen are believable, which is so important to a good mystery book. Some parts progressed a little slower at times, but it makes it worth the reader’s time to stick with it because details in a mystery read are so imperative to not miss. This is a great series to read if you love a good mystery that has you guessing throughout the book and then continues to be filled with unexpected twists and turns right to the very end. Happy reading, until next time!

Before semi-retiring and turning to write novels, Lee had a varied career. He spent more than 20 years working in the music industry. Everything from playing in bands as a teenager to running an indie record label and record shop during the punk rock era to starting a music collector’s magazine and building it from zero to a circulation of 14,000 copies a month.

He’s met virtually every top ‘pop star’ and achieved one of his lifetime ambitions when he became manager of The Troggs, one of his all-time favourite bands from his teens.

He wrote a best-selling book on the Sex Pistols in 1988, which was published by Omnibus Press and thanks to their well-oiled publicity machine sold a respectable 60,000 copies. It was also published in Japan – in Japanese!

He has lived in Cambridge for most of his life and looks on writing as a new adventure. He still finds time to play the guitar (Fender Stratocaster) and is currently learning to play the drums with his wife. They found a drum teacher who has a studio with two kits and they are learning to play together side by side.

Mr. Lucky, is the first novel in the series. They are all available in eBook and paperback formats.

He stroked her cheek and looked at her with intense black eyes. “Danger courts you.”
She had courted danger many times. It fed the darkest part of her. Perhaps it wanted something in return.

El Diablo is Book #2 in the Southwest Suspense series by Kathryn Dodson. It is set a couple of years after the events in Book #1 and even though you could read it as a standalone, I highly recommend reading ‘Tequila Midnight’, as not only is it a great little thriller, but it also provides a lot of character background, details, development, and other important information which will help you to fully appreciate this instalment.
Ms. Dodson has written quite a few books now, and I have enjoyed them all- but I have to admit that these Jessica Watts, and the Southwest Suspense novels are my favourite. There is just something about Jessica that draws me in. She’s tough, yet vulnerable, independent, and even a little ruthless at times. She can be forceful, sassy, brave, resilient, and stubborn. And she’s had quite a ‘colourful’ past awash with dark bars, intimate encounters, and liberal amounts of alcohol – tequila being her preferred poison. But she’s also awash with doubts and insecurities- especially since she has ‘turned over a new leaf’, so to speak. But underneath all her quirks and flaws, she’s fiercely loyal to her friends and ‘found’ family, and has a burning desire for justice, to help people in need. This desire has led to many dangerous situations, especially since she has a tendency to act first and ask questions later. She is having trouble accepting some of the ‘changes’ she’s had to make, and craves some of the excitement that her ‘wild’ days provided. She has been through a lot, but through it all her ‘gut’ instincts have held her in good stead. Which is exactly how she finds herself pitted against a twisted psychopath, because her gut tells her that the godly man is actually a monster in disguise, who has a sinister plot that involved preying on teenage girls. When he targets someone too close to home, Jessica’s protective instincts kick in and become a driving force as she is thrust into a tense game of cat and mouse. How far is Jessica willing to go? What price is she willing to pay? Will her quest come at the cost of her job, marriage, friendships, family, marriage, or even her life? Well, buckle-up, because Jessica’s about to take you on a gripping ride.
Another great instalment in this suspenseful thriller series. Woven with plenty of gritty mystery, intrigue, tension, danger, action, adventure, crime & investigation, family, friendship, agendas, well-developed interesting characters, action, emotion, and dramatic developments- which made putting this book down almost impossible.
Also, I adore the cover of this book!!! Just gorgeous. Along with Book #1, I would love poster-sized versions to hang on my office/library wall so I could gaze at them all the time.
Can’t wait to see what Jessica gets up to next, especially now she seems to have found a kindred spirit in the form of her new boss.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Kathryn Dodson!

Emma and Jeremy are in the thick of it with this mystery! When their friend’s brother ends up dead and no leads on who or why, they are thrown into the middle of a mystery! In order to flush out a past that is full of questions, they have to go undercover. As the investigation progresses, so do the stakes. With their family growing and responsibilities changing, can they balance it all to find out who the culprit is before it blows back on their family and friends? Or have they finally met their match?

I truly enjoy these stories! To me, this one felt a little like a novella than a novel. Usually there are multiple mysteries happening that all kind of feed into each other in some way; this one is not like that at all. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining! It was quite nice to just have the one mystery to keep track of in my mind. I liked getting to know a new character that is very similar to Emma. I think she needed someone to give her a run for her money! I hope to see their return in any upcoming books!

She discovers boundaries are hard to keep when someone you love is at risk. Jessica, who is still fighting her own troubled past, is addicted to helping others. The book is quick paced. We get right into the mystery. Emma is crafty and resourceful. There were a few twist and turns. I really enjoy her and Jeremey’s relationship. Although it’s possible to read this book as a stand alone I think I would have more understand with background information on each character from the previous books.

I definitely give it a 4/5 stars.
