C.A. King has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Every book I have read from this has always been very intriguing and has me on the edge of my sit. This book is no different. I fell in love with it from the very first page and was not able to put it down until I had finished it. I’m excited to see and read more of their books on the future.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Creatures of the Night has such a strong opening that I wanted to love the book. It starts with portals opening all around the world and creatures coming out and killing the majority of the human population. Due to this females became mages and males became knights. I wished that C.A. King would have fully fleshed out this new world. Unfortunately, for me, it felt like it was watered down and not enough detail was given. The ending feels rushed and very confusing with unfinished loose ends.

Without giving away any plot points, I think I can safely say that the author has managed to delve into yet another aspect of humanity. Issues that the world experienced prior to their pandemic, resurface a few years later. It appears that some people learn from history’s greatest mistakes, while others refuse to do so. The author explores humanity’s vulnerability. This series is a great read!

This was a really enjoyable read. It has something for everyone. There is danger, Romance and witches and warriors, creatures that go bump in the night and a mysterious black mist causing all the trouble. This author does an incredible job of taking a fantasy world and making it believable. The characters are well written and their story is definately a gripping read.

Zoe has been training her whole life to become a warrior. To protect the human race from strange creatures that are set out to destroy them. Given the gift of magic she enters the academy to train to the best. However, Zoe doesn’t want to stand on the sidelines and use magic she wants to fight like all the other brave warriors.
This is her path in life to rid the world of the horrible scary creatures that arrived by a strange mist and are slowly destroying the human race. This author has done a terrific job with this trilogy. This book rounds it out with the end. Can Callum and his friends save the world from the elites and their plans with their paranormal powers? I was sucked right back into the story and didn’t leave it until the end. It’s like riding down the roughest river you can ride. You are going along and then Bam, plot twist! smooth, BAM! repeat! That’s what I love. This has been one of the most exciting and scariest scifi book series to read. Touches too close to the weirdness in real life: Elite crazies, modified food, etc. I have enjoyed the characters. The paranormal touches to the story have brought a whole new side. Again, close to real life, starting with the climate disasters at the beginning and here we are with a bunch happening, creepy! Please keep writing more, you have a new fan. I love your style. Highly recommend if you love apocalype/dystopian.

I absolutely love books that mix paranormal and mythology so Creatures Of The Night by C. A. King really caught my eye. I was very intrigued to see it had vampires, werewolves, and ghosts as well as demons, gorgons, centaurs, and gods. What else could anyone want in a book! King also has a way of writing that is so beautiful and gripping, for example “ The sun had finished its shift for the day, leaving keys in the moon’s hand until it returned once more.” Her writing made this story have its own heartbeat. This isn’t the first book I’ve read by her and she never disappoints! Zoe is also a real easy character to feel for, having the abilities she does but being stuck on the sidelines. Creatures Of The Night was also so unpredictable as soon as I thought I knew what was going to happen the whole thing did a 180 degree turn and I was taken aback. A book hasn’t surprised me like that in a while. I recommend this book to any paranormal fantasy lover! You will be in for a real treat!

Destiny of Light (Quirk of Destiny, #3)Destiny of Light by Catherine Greenall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Destiny of Light is the final book in the Quirk of Destiny Trilogy. Make sure you read the first two books. This is a gripping dystopian Sci Fi tale where science fiction meets real science and is unlike anything you have read before. I couldn’t wait to see how Catherine brought the story to a close in this epic trilogy. I was not disappointed.
A dark and twisted tale of madness, devastation and destruction in a post-apocalyptic world where genetically modified food created the Genies, the Elite who have the power to destroy and evil with paranormal powers. It is a world in ruin.
Can Calum together with his friends stop those behind this terrible conspiracy and bringing destruction to the world be stopped?
Destiny of Light is a compelling storyline with many twists and turns that you cannot put down.
If you like post-apocalyptic sci fi thrillers, you need to grab this trilogy and get stuck in. A definite must-read.

This is the third and final book in trilogy and it was a great way to round off the stories. I was easily pulled back into the story and the characters and wanted to see how things would turn out. As with the other books this one is well written and really knows how to draw you in.
This is still a relatively new author to me and I have really enjoyed getting familiar with her work over this trilogy. The characters have been strong and varied and I will definitely be looking into more from her soon.

I truly enjoyed Zoe’s story. She knows what she has to do with her life but she is now in a journey to combine what she is with whom she wants to be. This is a paranormal fantasy story told in a very movie like fashion with all the details you need to fall deeper in. The characters have amazing backgrounds and the storyline is very strong. Creatures of the Night is a new book by author CA King. I was excited to pick up a new book by this author because I always enjoy her storytelling. This book is set in a dystopian, science-fiction world. Zoe lives in a world that has been at war for generations fighting monsters and demons. She has been always been a fighter, but what does she do if falls for the enemy? Whom will she choose, the family she loves or for romance? I always enjoy books by this author. I tend to read straight through to the end and this was no exception. Zoe is a strong female questioning everything she has learned about herself and those they have been battling. I like that she has to face some internal issues and not just physical tests. I would like to know if we will get more from this world or if this will be a standalone book. There is a lot more that can be explored. I look forward to picking up more books from this author soon.

I enjoyed the character in this book too. I thought the author got the combination of them and the storyline perfect, each complimenting the other. This author is easily one of my favourites and I would urge everyone to read her books.

Creatures of the Night by C.A. King. I love this author and I loved this urban fantasy book. It begins when a black mist covers the Earth bringing to life monsters. The ones left all join together to fight off these monsters. Zoe is at the age she needs to go to school to learn how to use her powers but doesn’t trust the people teaching. What if they are not teaching her the right things. Being tricked by several men in her life she doesn’t trust easy and when she is left with the hard choice of saving one thing that she has been taught her whole life is bad she is so confused. Zoe only knows that she has to make the right choice or her world will forever be changed and maybe even gone. Read this fast paced fantasy to find out what happens!

I think C.A. King had a real opportunity to make Zoe a real heroin. A great chance to make a strong leading lady, but she spent the entire book confused about who she was, what she was doing and who she wanted to be. This in turn kept me a bit confused throughout the story as well. Ended up getting tricked by multiple men in her life and just never really developed into a solid character. The men were extremely unlikeable. I was also unsure how much time passed in this book. It read like it was a matter of days, but then some instances eluded to it being a very long time.

Creatures of the Night is a wonderfully written Dystopian Fantasy with some Paranormal / Romance that once you start reading there’s no stopping until you finish. This author is one of my favorites and each book they write is my favorite yet but this one is definitely my favorite yet. Her characters are well developed, real yet raw at times and they make the story come to life. I always feel like I’m apart of the adventure. Zoe has been training her whole life to fight demons and monsters but now she’s faced with making a hard choice. Will she betray one to save the other? Will she follow her heart ? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

With three short stories weaved into a trilogy, the author packs quite a punch. Ancient Celtic tales bring to mind similarly named characters of Native American lore. If you seek a journey into a mystical land of long, long ago, you can’t go wrong with this three-in-one. The imagery is amazing. I felt myself transported to an ancient land and an ancient time.

I have read numerous books written by the author and absolutely loved every one of them. and this book did not disappoint. im a big fan of urban fantasy and love reading others take of their view on what the fantasy world is like. A black mist descends onto earth, and with it brought monsters, that no one wants to have to deal with. Zoe who is a strong female lead in this book, she and her family fight to rid the world of these threats of monsters and the mist that brought them to life. But as she’s doing so, she finds herself in a situation that she now is questioning what she was taught and told of these monsters. This book is filled with action, adventure, witches, magic, drama, paranormal, extraordinary characters and thrill. I could not put this book down till I was done. An unusual trilogy of a mystical dystopian, near-future storyline where the characters shapeshift in and out of reality. This is a very interesting read that discusses the topic of climate change with a touch of magical realism. I like that all three novellas are in one package because once you finish one, you will want to start the next. Koerber has such a way with words that she holds your interested til the end. There is such a flow to this story and you really connect with the characters.

A mountain in the air is a refreshing trilogy. This intertwined set of stories are heavily built in fantasy and cause your mind to think and reflect on many abstract concepts of life and death. While reading I found myself doing just that and this enhanced the reading experience. The shape shifting main character in the book has a myriad of adventures in this future world. The way that the author portrays animals and the idea of survival in this dystopian world is very thought provoking. If this is your genre you will enjoy this read.

I had never heard of Laura Koerber before coming across this book and I was intrigued by the unique synopsis and the chance to read three of her works in one. The three novellas in order are Coyote’s Road Trip, Raven Woman’s Tavern and A Mountain in the Air.
When first meeting Coyote Jim he is seeing the first migraters cross through his territory, the Valley of Dry Bones in Nevada. These people did not leave a good impression on him as they seemed to not care about the land, learning or their own kind. All they cared about was their destination, not the journey. The timeline can be confusing in the beginning as it bounces back and forth between memories of Jim conversing with the ghosts of the only two humans, he ever built a friendship with their death and meeting them. After a radiation leak that forced the humans to move away Joseph and Janey were the last humans in his territory, so he took interests in them. When they passed Coyote no longer had anything keeping him in the Valley of Dry Bones, but it had been his home for as long as he could remember but the climate changes gave him no choice but to go in search of a new home. With his journey taking him to Washington state he finds something he wasn’t looking for but hopes it will be enough.
When I first got this book, I was curious how the three novellas worked together as each had a different main character. I then realized that they all led into each other to a degree, Coyote ends his road trip in the timber town where Raven owns a tavern, and Pete lives in the wilderness of Mt. Rainier nearby. At times I felt the story dragged on, but the imagery of the landscapes and the development of each story kept me glued to the pages needing more.

A Mountain in the Air: A Trilogy by Laura Koerber – Review by Santana Hicks

A Mountain in the Air: A TrilogyA Mountain in the Air: A Trilogy by Laura Koerber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book consists of 3 novellas all closely connected. The first one called ‘Coyote’s Road Trip’ is about a man named Jim who is also a coyote shapeshifter. Bored with his life, he sets out on a long drive to find his new forever home. Along the way, he meets a young girl named TJ who is hitchhiking. He takes it upon himself to see her safely dropped off with her brother in Rainier. Once getting to Rainier he meets Rachel in an old ghost town with very few tenants. Rachel is also a shapeshifter so instantly the pair get along.

The second novella, ‘Raven Woman’s Tavern’, takes place shortly after the first book. Rachel and her boyfriend Jimmy take it upon themselves to care for the townspeople, supplying medicine, toiletries etc. Some things are bought while others are acquired illegally. So when a troop of militia appears to drink in the tavern, the townspeople are nervous and want them gone ASAP. Once they come back a second time after a wallet disappears from one of the men, Rachel realizes she needs to do more to get rid of them.

The book then focuses on Baylor, the only one in the Militia group who appeared nice. The group becomes abandoned and after not following the leaders orders, he is quickly thrown out of the group. Lost in the woods he finds a raven who seems to be leading him somewhere.

Last but not least the last novella, ‘A Mountain in the Air’. This takes place a couple years after the second book. Settling in nicely, the townspeople are making changes for the better. While acquiring some necessary things to do so, Jim comes across TJ from years prior. He can tell she is not doing too well and invites her to live in the town. Meanwhile, Val seems to be dying and keeps dreaming about a man who disappeared in the 90’s. He went to Mt Rainier never to return. The dreams are so vivid that they have to be real don’t they?

This trilogy was quite interesting. It was written as a day in the life genre with a supernatural element. There are shapeshifters and ghosts mingled in with regular humans coexisting within the same town. Each character had their own personality and reason to be there. The author did a really good job portraying each person.

Coyote’s Road Trip.

Coyote is a nature spirit, a shapeshifter who lives in a valley in the Nevada Desert, he watches life in his territory with a distant interest, he has seen many people pass through his home, but he has never seen as much change in the desert as he has these last few years, so when the last two people he was friends with pass away, coupled with the heat and the drought, he decides to leave the one place he has ever called home.

He sets off North on the only road out of the desert and even though he doesn’t have a destination in mind, something points him in the right direction, just as he is about to leave the desert, he stops for one last look and then turns towards the future.

As he travels, Coyote meets people and experiences different places along the way as he tries to find somewhere new in the Pacific Northwest, but will he find what he is looking for and a new purpose for his existence? In this dystopian sci-fi meets fantasy tale, where the future has been affected by the climate change scientists are just now predicting, this is a journey of self discovery and talks about hard subjects in a manner that all who enjoy this genre of book, it is charming and pulls you through the story to find out how it ends.

Raven Woman’s Tavern.

Raven is a Raven shifter, as her name suggests and she is in charge of the small logging town which has seen better day, but those living within its boundaries have all found themselves there for a reason and kindled a kinship with the others living there. This place, however, is like no other and you will only find your way in or out if Rachel allows it and the road can be as long, short, twisted or straight as she desires, that is until one day when the local Militia find their way in.

All who live there have found there way in unusual circumstances and are not the youngest of pioneers, they have all lived a good life, but like the town have become all but forgotten, they are disconnected from the outside world, but they are happy and make do with what they can, whether that is legally, or by stretching the law, just a little. Baylor is one of these people, although, he isn’t as young as the rest, he has also heard the cry of a raven and followed it, little does he know that this will save his life and that his skills will help this small town survive the turmoil to come.

Can Baylor and the other residents of this small out of the way town keep their way of life, or will the Militia come in and take away everything they are working hard to build? This is a fantastical dystopian take on some pertinent themes including climate change and the flaws and triumphs which combine in all of humanity, while injecting magic and humour throughout in this enchanting novella.

Mountain In The Air.

Pete is a rock star in the prime of his life, he has amassed a loyal, local following with his grungy tunes and it looks like his life is about to take a turn for the better, but one day he takes a walk up Mt. Rainier to clear his head and never comes down, this was in the 1990’s and eventually people stopped searching for him and just forgot, but 40 years later and he is lonely, so he reaches out to anyone he can reach, through their dreams, this is where he calls out to one person in particular without even realising it.

Meanwhile, life in a small logging town carries on and the people living there know that something is coming, they just don’t know when or where, so when a newcomer arrives, it is all hands on deck to help them feel welcome, but will they be able to forget their past life and adapt to this new one, one with little in one way, but a lot in another and with only each other to depend on, their unique talents all work together to help run this last piece of magical land.

What connections can Pete build within his dream walking and will they be the ones he wants, or the ones he needs? This is a magical story of how humanity needs the connections it builds with each other to survive any trials it may come across in this dystopian vision of a future which could come to pass, where reality and magic collide to create an unmissable story.

This is a trilogy which is full of examples of adversity and how it can bring people together, when both newcomers and old troubles come calling into this small town, will the magic surrounding it protect it from the ravages of climate change and humanity in general, or will this breach of their perimeter spell doom for them all? This is a dystopian world which could very much become a reality, if the messages held within are not heeded, as adversity fights for its place in this fantastical world in a way which hooks you from the start and keeps you there until the end.

This is a fantastical dystopian take on some pertinent themes including climate change and the flaws and triumphs which combine in all of humanity, while injecting magic and humour throughout in this enchanting novella.

A Mountain in the Air: A TrilogyA Mountain in the Air: A Trilogy by Laura Koerber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Engaging magical trilogy
This is the complete trilogy.
The first is a short novella “Coyote’s Road Trip” is a unique story with shapeshifters, drama and mystery based in a dystopian world. It takes the reader on a journey told by Coyote. The author has done a fantastic job of bringing the reader into Coyote’s mind and interweaving the world as interpreted by him. There are a lot of layers to the story that will appeal to many readers from climate change to grief and finding happiness in the smallest of things.
“Raven Woman’s Tavern” is a short dark tale which features many characters all trying to survive. I liked the character Raven, she is always observing everyone and everything and has a sense of justice.
“A Mountain in the Air” is the third instalment and brings everything together. I felt a lot of emotions reading this one as it draws closer parallels to our world and the struggles with climate change, habitat destruction, survival and animal migration.
A worthy read.
