The Mesmerist by Claire Luana – Review by Desiree Ottinger

The MesmeristThe Mesmerist by Claire Luana
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Adrijana longs for more out of life. She accepts an invitation for her and her father to stay for a celebration thinking this is the opening she has been seeking. However, she quickly learns that life is not always as it seems. Her world comes crashing down around her when she finds out her father has kept her true heritage from her since she was five years old. She has to come to grips quickly with who she is as the royal family is being murdered one by one. In a world of intrigue, secrets, and hidden agendas, Adrijana has to learn quickly who she can trust and who she cannot before it is too late! Can she learn everything about being a mesmerist fast enough to find the true killer? Or will the killer succeed in taking out the royal family?

This is my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed! The story drew me in immediately and I didn’t want to put it down. There were strange things happening to her and I HAD to know what was going on. I was drawn in by Adrijana’s vulnerability and her emotions throughout the story. The lessons she learns are hard ones, but she refuses to roll over and give up. All the characters were intriguing, and the storyline kept me guessing until the end! I hope there will be more books in this world!

5 stars!

I really wish this book was longer! I very much enjoyed reading about Aia and Nen. Being that the story was set in ancient Japan, had magical elements and geishas made it that much more interesting to me. Aia’s sister Yui is a geisha but Aia wasn’t a full blown geisha yet and it seemed like she was just kind of in limbo with her life. A chance meeting with Nen, a swordsman changes her perspective. I loved watching Nen and Aia’s relationship grow, as well as the dangerous and magical journey they embark on to see the world. I would definitely recommend this book!

“A great and mysterious event occurred. Religious talisman came fluttering down out of the empty sky. Men dressed as women. Women dressed as men. The town’s people dancing through the village. The villagers cavorting in towns. Whole populations drunk. Orgiastic behavior in the streets and paper talismans falling from the Heavens, like cherry blossoms in the wind. The world was coming to an end. A new one was apparent.” ~ Iwakura Tomomi.

Western winds blow revolution across Japan as Emperor Meiji seeks to modernize his country. The changes, the whispers of siege and war in retaliation, sweep over Ono Aia. Her small world, wound and bound like the kimono around her body, revolves around the geishas she serves and the geisha she hopes to be.

But upheaval cannot be stopped. Aia is flung into the arms of a swordsman with obsidian eyes and a blade that can cut more than mortal flesh. His name is Nen.

At his side, not only does Aia learn of a mythical realm beyond human comprehension, she learns where her heart may truly lie. Perhaps it is not in the study and perfection of the geisha tradition. Perhaps, it beside a man larger than life. His size terrifies and thrills her. His black eyes dazzle and delight her.

But the spirits of Japanese lore could destroy man’s reality. Can the fates of the mortal and fantastical world remain in balance? Or will Aia find her heart only to lose it in the uproar?

The Mesmerist by Claire Luana – Review by Amber Day

The MesmeristThe Mesmerist by Claire Luana
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As far as I am aware this was my first book by Mrs. Luana. This book is a standalone novel and was rather interesting. It combined the flare of fantasy that has become popular with just the right amount of mystery that keeps the reader interested. The characters are easy to love and you find yourself rooting for Andrijana. You can’t help yourself from wanting to see her win.

Journeys Through AllCreation (Journeys Through Book3) by James Talisman – Review by Roxsanne Lesieur.

Journeys Through AllCreation (Journeys Through Book 3)Journeys Through AllCreation by James Talisman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As the universe recovers from the last confrontation between those from Earth and those from another planet with an opposing view of how life should be, those living in a mystical place find an ancient prophecy which speaks of dire consequences to the MultiVerse brought on by an all powerful “God like” creature who will use their intelligence and power to ally themselves with the Dokkaebi-of-all-Creation to create their vision of reality in all its glory.

Meanwhile, the celestial beings who would be capable of stopping this diabolical plan in its tracks have gone missing, trapped by the “God like” creature as a retaliatory move for a past action. This has consequences as another is released so that they can be trapped and as happy as that individual is, disorientation and adjustments need to be made before the plan can be fully enacted.

As a set of ancient twins from the lost continent of Atlantis are called upon to again reunite and tackle the issue revealed by the ancient prophecy, as well as search for the trapped celestial beings, they embark on another journey away from their loved ones. Along the way they recruit a beautiful Queen who has access to ancient sites of wisdom and relics which will aid them on their quest, as well as other team members whose skills are needed and mentioned in the prophecy as well.

The overall goal is to search for the Master Mage who will aid them and stop this creature in its tracks, however, other players are preparing their own manoeuvres and training for their goals, but whether they will align with the prophecy is unknown.

As this unpredictable prophecy plays out among the MultiVerse, the two opposing sides prepare for a confrontation between mortals and “gods” as the future of all the beings in creation hangs in the balance, but which side will be triumph? This is a sci-fi fantasy of epic proportions as all the players race against time to either bring destruction, or salvation to all the worlds within the MultiVerse, as you are pulled into the journey with them and are carried along to its conclusion.

I have been looking forward to reading this third instalment to the Journeys Through series and I really enjoyed it. I think this is probably my favourite from the series – again the author transported me to another world with his wonderfully detailed writing. The story was action packed from the start. It was great to see recurring characters as well and because of this I would highly recommend that this series is read in order. I definitely think this book tied together the series well. I liked the uniqueness of Matt and Rashella’s relationship, their character development was really well done.
Overall a great read and I look forward to more from this author again in the future.

This author has given us a story that is a blend of romance, fantasy, and Norse mythology. It starts off a little slow but soon gets going and entices and intrigues till the end. With a beautiful descriptive narrative, intricately woven threads, and great world-building leads to a tapestry of enjoyment. There is plenty of action, magic and emotions, desperation, sadness, happiness, and everything in between. With elves and characters of all types, this tale is one you can tell the author has put heart and soul into. This book is the first I have read by this author, and I enjoyed it immensely. I had devastating news early hours of this morning and this story was able to get me out of my head for a while. With twists and turns at every angle this is one thrilling and suspenseful tale.

The Mesmerist: A Young Adult Fantasy Mystery by Claire Luana

This is not the first book I’ve read by the author. The author keeps me coming back and so far each book I’ve read is amazing. The Mesmerist is a great book.

Adrijana can see people’s feelings and she isn’t sure why. When her childhood friend invites her to the Palace she must go. Her father doesn’t want her there, but he can’t stop her. The quote I chose for Adrijana is: “It doesn’t sit well that you questioned Spirodon without me. I wanted to be there. I needed to be there. To put my own questions to rest.”

Dragan is the Para-Mesmerist and he can sense Jana the second she steps into the ballroom. He gets close to her and finds himself falling for her. The quote I chose for Dragan is: “I don’t see how it’s possible. But if it makes you feel better, when I get a chance, I’ll consult the Mesmer library and see what I can find.”

Highly recommended for Fantasy Crime lovers.

A spider-shifter for a main character makes for an incredible new world of possibilities. I’ve never read anything with a Webmaker before and found this to be a more magical and interesting story because of it. I felt like I was reading the wild-west equivalent of urban fantasy and wasn’t sure what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed reading more about this world. The story had a great and natural flow to it that got me to read it faster than I would have with a book of a similar length. The author created an amazing tale with a strong, female lead, enthralling plot, and intriguing side characters!

Journeys Through AllCreation (Journeys Through Book 3)Journeys Through AllCreation by James Talisman

This book finds Matt’s journey taking a different path from Julia and Dan. He has to journey through different universes to save not only ours but also those in the MultiVerse. When his friends are kidnapped, he is greatly tested. His archenemies are trying to distract Matt from his purpose of saving the world. Will he be able to focus on what needs to be done and trust others to rescue his loved ones? Or will he let his emotions get the better of him?

I enjoyed this book as much as the others! It is a fascinating read in how you see past characters come back into the story and how timelines feed into the completion of their paths. I appreciated reading the thoughts of the characters as they face challenges and how they also give different perspectives in conflict. I felt like by reading their thought processes, my way of thinking was challenged.

Hopefully, we will see more stories by this author!

Having read and enjoyed the previous two books in this series I was eagerly looking forward to this third novel, and I was definitely not disappointed. In this story the exciting but dangerous adventure continues, with Earth and other worlds in the MultiVerse in danger of disappearing from reality. An ancient prophecy had foretold of diabolical plans of an “exceedingly intelligent and powerful being”. However, the outcome is unclear and so a mix of gods and mortals battle for the future of all creation. This wonderfully written novel is an exciting, enjoyable and engaging read with an original and complex storyline which had me hooked from start to finish.

The plot twists kept me gripped until the very last page, and I felt completely immersed in the story due to the authors descriptive narrative. The detailed world building brings the settings and characters vividly to life. I enjoyed ‘catching up’ with some familiar faces and also meeting some new ones. Each character is unique and had their own intriguing backstory which adds to the overall narrative. I couldn’t put this book down and thoroughly recommend it, although I would suggest reading the series in order for maximum understanding and enjoyment.

The Mesmerist was a great fantasy mystery read. The world building was fantastic, from the magic all the way to the country the story is set in. Jana was a well written protagonist, she gets thrown right into the thick of it quick into the book after the Queen was killed. She doesn’t have much time to think before she go into solving mode. Throughout the story, clues were introduced perfectly, just enough to keep you on the “who dun it” trail. I was continuously shocked and left wanting more at the end of each page. Jana is tested with truth, confidence, love, lust, lies and friendship throughout the book. The books leaves you satisfied with he resolution but leaves just enough open to allow for other books if decided. I would LOVE to have more books from this world and these characters.

Book 3 is here and was absolutely amazing! This series has been great and has taken Sci-Fi to another level. The character growth made me understand their plights even better than before. The way the worlds were still as complex but even more developed let me gain a better understanding of the societies themselves. Book 3 took us places we had yet to be, and I loved every moment of it. The author left room for later installments or possibly it leading into another series. Either way I was very excited with the way this book went, and I only hope that there is more ahead.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Accepted into the sisterhood! Well not without ire and reservations of some. The Clockwork Solution brings us back to Arabella’s story. I feel she holds a lot of cards in her favor as she did previously.
This book pretty much picks up where book 1 ended.
Disowned but accepted definitely leaves our main character struggling with decisions about her future. Aside from the fact her life is still in danger. Arabella’s mother decides to send her to Ireland so she can update on their famine issues. Dangerous in its own way to witches, Arabella’s mother feels it’s the safest place for her.
Which direction does Arabella choose?
Is Ireland really the safer bet?
You want answers? Well then you have to dig in!
I do like this book better than the first book, but anyone who is interested in this story really should read book 1 first.

The Clockwork WitchThe Clockwork Witch by Michelle D. Sonnier
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hmm… where to begin. The Clockwork Witch was better than expected. I struggled at the beginning, it started off slow. So listen to me when I say don’t give up if you feel the same way. It’s worth touching it out.
Arabella, the 7th daughter of Minerva who is the 7th daughter was thought to be the one who filled the prophecy that would change the way the witches in this story exist. Unfortunately though Arabella seems to be a dud. No magical powers. She’s a fascinating character to watch develop as the story goes on. At the same time you feel for her. She’s an outcast to her mother by lacking magical ability, an outcast to her father because she’s not a son. A sister that’s looked down upon by all in exception to Rowena. Her life is not easy and it makes her a target.
One night she’s fascinated by machinery and the light she sees flying through it. Come to find out that could lead to her having magic after all. Unfortunately not a type of magic that’s accepted.
It’s all about how she navigates her situation.
Does it help her?
Does it make her more vulnerable?
Again when I say read it, even if you’re like me and think it’s starting slow. Push through it won’t disappoint. I’m now looking forward to book 2, when I wasn’t at 1st. The author turned me around!

Arabella has returned and this time she is off on an adventure along with her sister. I was very excited to see a situation we were presented with at the beginning of the first book became the main focus of this book.

The author once again does a great job at create a world where technology and magic must try and work together. However again like the first book I really couldn’t fall in love with it. It’s still a solid story and the characters really help bring it to life but it felt a little slow to me.

I tried to love this book. It had so much potential but it never fully came to the point where I just loved it. I will say based on the world building aspect and the deep internal battles I will give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

As I was reading this book, I experienced a whole rainbow of emotions. The MC mother and older sisters angered me at their treatment of Arabella just because she failed at being magical which she had no control over. The relationship between her and her mother was one of extreme abuse and very degrading which led me to feel sadness for the MC.

I look forward to reading the second book in this series to see if we find answers to some of the questions left at the end of this book.

This series is exceptionally well-written! It draws a reader in from word one, completely engaging every reader with the complexity of the characters. The intricacy of the worlds the author builds is absolutely amazing! The originality of the journeys kept me reading and I just had to see what came next! I wish it was a world I could tour myself, and characters that I could make friends with. Their growth is realistic but they never lose the complexity that endeared them to me in the first place! There were also many intense ideas that made me want to save them so I could think more about them later! All in all, his writing is exquisite and will not disappoint!
