Another superb blending of tales from my childhood! Lycos is mistaken for the beast that haunts the village and he, Red, and Rapunzel are thrown in the castle tower as prisoners. Desperate to know if their daughter, princess Arabelle, is still alive, the King and Queen agree to let Lycos go to the cursed castle to save the princess from the clutches of the beast. What will happen to Red and Rapunzel if he fails? You will have to read this third story in The Untold Stories series to see what becomes of our three travelers and to the kingdom under a cursed spell. I have really enjoyed this series and am anxious for the fourth book.

Liam Covington is a typical teenager, he goes to high school and has a close friend group, but as hard as he tries to keep a low profile while he is there, the other kids are always messing with him, bullying him and generally making his life awkward, but what they don’t know is that he can see colours all around him, not just normal colours, they are attached to people and they get brighter when he is going to be messed around with, but even if he did tell someone, they wouldn’t believe him anyway.
As usual his day starts with someone pushing him over on the way to school, but today, he is going on the school field trip to the desert and he is hoping that it won’t get much worse, however, when he gets on the bus, he can see the colours everywhere and tries to mind his own business. When they get there and the ranger starts talking about the desert, it’s geological features and the life which teams within it, all the kids are just waiting until they can go and play on the dunes, but Liam is enjoying the tour and talk just as much, he is also reminiscing about the family holiday he used to have as well. He crests one of the sand dunes and breathes in the air, thoroughly enjoying himself until he is drawn to a midnight blue colour smoke which is making patterns in the sand below him, this is when danger strikes and he steps into a sinkhole just as a dust devil appears and mixes in with the smoke and swirls towards him but he cannot move or- avoid the sand swirling around him, he tries to dig into the sand and find some kind of purchase to get away from it all. The next thing he knows is Kenna, a girl he has been trying to avoid comes to his rescue, pulls him out of the sand and offers him some water, his head hurts and he feels exhausted and gritty, but still he picks up the unusual shell and walks back to the bus with his friend supporting him.
Things start to go from bad to worse when his brother and mother find out what happened and are mad at him for not telling them as soon as he saw them, but it gets worse when the colours start getting brighter and start to appear in people’s eyes, not to mention the school gossip which is making his life worse, especially when it comes to Kenna, someone who he swore not to talk to again after their families had a disagreement years ago. Meanwhile, he begins to see what he thinks are hallucinations and the shell he picked up in the desert is either burning hot or covered in the blue designs he can see in his hallucinations, but what happens next shocks him into realising that maybe his hallucinations are real and that they may be able to give him some answers as to why he sees the colours and nobody else does. This is a fantasy adventure which will have you speeding along with Liam while he tries to work out the mystery of why he experiences what he does, while trying to live a life as normally as he can.

We are introduced to the character of Red in The Hook’s Little Mermaid. The character of Red comes off as a brave girl, who has just lost her father . She develops a deep bond with Hook in a brief time. In this book, we get to know more about Red ,her encounter with Hook and their journey together into the forest. Red is a fearless girl, who dons a red cloak .She is a hunter who goes into the deep forest to find fur and ash, and trades them to the bartenders and the pirates to get a good price, to feed her family. Red is determined to hunt down her father’s killer , whom the wolves took out. Captain Hook is in search of the Ash, to battle the kraken in the deep seas. Together they journey into the forest and the fairy tale takes a twist such that another fairy tale is introduced in the story. Rapunzel is introduced and their quest together is exciting. Suzanne Lynn has a good knack of creating this fairy tale mashups, each children’s classic blended with another and a fresh perspective given to the characters we have doted since childhood. I have enjoyed reading this Untold Series so far and hope to see more such books in the future.

The World Beyond the Walls is the third book in Jean Gill’s Natural Forces series. The series juxtaposes the sterile and highly regulated Citadel with the wild and free Forest beyond – an enticing and thought-provoking fantasy setting. It was great to catch up with familiar characters and meet some new ones as well – I particularly like Jeanette whose curiosity and determination get her into trouble and who knows the value of stories. I really like how this series focuses on bees in the fantasy narrative. It’s very current, with concerns about bee populations dwindling, and also lends itself to an interesting perspective on society and loyalties. This is the third book in the series, and I would definitely recommend starting at the beginning to enjoy the story in order. Gill does recap some important events of the earlier books so it makes sense on its own but the books are all so good you’ll want to read them all! For me, this is a five-star read. I would recommend it to confident teen and young adult readers who enjoy fantasy and nature, particularly those involved in activism.

Mielitta Queen Of The Warrior Bees and Mage-Smith Kermon are back living in the Forest and the Citadel respectively, Kermon is trying to teach the children magecraft while also keeping his dual role as a spy between the two parties, as he is carrying out his plans for the transition test where the children go into the world beyond the walls, the children he is testing are also trying to push the boundaries set by their genders, but they don’t fully know why those boundaries are there, in fact, only two people know that at all and Mage-Smith Kermon is one of them.
When Mage Smith Kermon is disturbed in his forge with news that one of his students has gone into the world beyond the walls and not returned, he is frustrated and annoyed, but he is also worried because of the evil which lies within them, he sends the young student away and has to attend a Council meeting to request permission to do this, however as they took the time to listen to all the opposing viewpoints and make a decision which appeals to all, he finds out afterwards that the other student has gone ahead alone, so now he has to go after both of the students with another mage at his side to be his anchor.
Mage-Smith Kermon gathers the children who have spoken to the two missing students to find out any information about what they had gone into the wall to decide, based on the little he is able to gather, he has a starting point for when he takes his turn to enter the mysterious world, he takes the time to gather provisions and goes to the water gate to connect with Mielitta to inform her of the situation and what he is about to do, including that the student was possibly following the story of Mielitta, however, he speaks to someone unknown instead and they say that they will pass on the message to her, when the connection is cut off, Mage-Smith Kermon is surprised to find where he had thrown some boots containing seeds into the mud at the base of the gate, now there are plants forcing their way through to the Forest, with this new knowledge, he sets off to find his students. Meanwhile, Mielitta and her two friends are being woken up after a long winter hibernation, but the news they receive on awakening is not what they had hoped and it means they need to return to aid another of their friends and the bees who rely on them, in this Mielitta shifts from bee to human and back to help the bees and the humans to communicate while the others help her, while the one with the nature of a bear replenishes his reserves in the way he needs to, but while he is resting in the cave, he has a vision which leads to a way to get back into the Citadel to help Mage-Smith Kermon.
When they follow the vision, two of them can enter the walls, however, Mielitta is not able to, so she decides to find another way in which she can help, but is distracted by her heart and the hurt the walls just caused her, she is prompted by her bees to think of and return to the homestead, however, her steps lead her to the water gate instead and she goes in to help the others in bee form, but she has no idea of the danger leaving the Citadel and heading in the opposite direction to her.
Will the four friends be able to solve the mystery of Mielitta’s history, find and protect the missing students from the evil within the walls and come out of the other end unscathed, or will the duplicity within the Citadel lead to their demise? This is a thrilling final installment to the series and you will not be able to put the book down until it is finished and you know how it ends.

This is a great series that intertwines all the well-known fairy tales, but with a twist!

This is an YA adventure story. I would put this from about 5th or 6th level reading and older. I cannot wait to see where Mina Chara is going to follow up this masterfully crafted story. The plot is full of action and adventure. The characters are fully developed and enjoyable to read. In this action story there are pirates and creatures and their action and adventure stories. Every page I turned the page just made me turn the pages faster and faster. The ship Easy Money is on an adventure to find The Ocean’s Light. This light is to have incalculable power. It is easy to see why Captain Hammer wants the light for himself. Evie and the crew of Easy Money are trying to get to The Ocean’s Light first. Will Easy Money get to treasure first or will Captain Hammer and his crew get it first? I highly recommend this book. Batten Down The Hatches and enjoy the adventure.

I’ve read the other two books and was in love, this one was fantastic. I can’t say enough about Melitta’s story. You really do need to read these in order, so if you haven’t go start book 1! This one focuses a lot on the walls and everyone around her, which rounds out the stories very well. I love each character, even the bad ones. They play a great role and are important for each little situation that helps the greater plot. Some of my favorite characters is Verity, and I can’t get into details but she’s boss lol. Please read these in order, if you don’t, you won’t understand everything you need to. It’s fantastic and elegantly written.

This is the first book in a series by a new author for me. The cover is what caught my eye and enticed me to pick up this book to read it. I love books related to pirates so just seeing the ship on the cover drew me in. And gosh did this book sail me on an ocean adventure. I found this to be a fast-paced story and was filled with quite a bit of action. I found that the family story felt familiar to me from the “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” movie to some degree. Perhaps that was a reason that the story resonated with me so much and I enjoyed it. If you enjoy books related to pirates, ships, and finding lost treasure then you will find this book as enjoyable as I did.

Mielitta is now the Queen of the Warrior bees after the battle for the Forest and she and her bees are settling to their new life with two of her friends as the other settles back into life in the Citadel, meanwhile the Council are reporting what happened to the rest of those living within it, while also spinning it in the light of their victory and the fact that those they paint as traitors are still alive, as well as the noble sacrifice of their Chief Mage, what they don’t say is how he died Mage-Smith Kermon is adjusting to life back within the Citadel and he is missing it and his friends greatly, but he spends his first few days back creating the system he needs to connect with them again and while he is completing this task, he learns about the old transition test from childhood to adulthood as he does this.
When Mage-Smith Kermon successfully contacts Mielitta, he is feeling a barrage of emotions and finds it hard to concentrate on the words being said, even though there isn’t much to report this first time, so when a messenger announces that his presence has been requested at a meeting, they cut off the call and he agrees to contact them again when he has more news. Life in the forest continues as they learn the ways of the Forest and its inhabitants, they decide what tasks they need to complete first with guidance from the bees and go out to forage and hunt before finding somewhere they will feel safe as a home base, that is until Mielitta is summoned by her bees to help the hive, but when she arrives, she realises that it is her that needs the helps and so she experiences life as a worker bee to help her to recover from the battle. As the Council meet to replenish their numbers and choose those to replace the ones they lost, they have to adhere to the blood made in the Forest with Mielitta, even though they don’t necessarily agree with it, so they elect people who they feel will fit with the demands, yet still bend to their will, as well as how to commemorate the Chief Mage’s father with an award for going into the walls and helping Perfection to continue with what they find. After that has all been decided, the Chief Mage announces that Mage-Smith Kermon will devise the new transition test and that to do this, he will be going into the walls and at the same time, be the first recipient of the newly created award.
As their lives continue and they all adjust to their new roles, Mage-Smith Kermon enters the wall, but as well as finding the information needed for the new test, he also discovers the more malevolent side to them and when he returns to complete his reports, both for the Council and for Mielitta, something has changed, even though he cannot put his finger on what it is. Will Mage-Smith Kermon be able to continue his double life and still keep his sanity and loyalty intact, or will the web of lies, subterfuge and this mysterious malevolence destroy everything that he, Mielitta and the rest of their group have worked for? This is another journey of secrets, discovery and balance, which propels you along as the revelations come in thick and fast.

The Ocean’s Light is the first book in Mina Chara’s new Blood of the Pirate series where fantasy meets folklore. Mina’s stories are always fun and full of adventure and if you like Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones or even the Library you are gonna love this new series. The action and adventure will have you thinking like and hearing yourself speaking in your mind like a pirate. Yeah, yeah, I know crazy town, hubby can verify that. Any who, it was easy to become lost and immersed in the story as it was so entertaining. The one thing that let it down was that there are some editing issues that stopped the natural flow. Besides that, I cannot wait for the next book.

This is the 3rd book in the Natural Forces series and wow what a book. It grips you and drives you right into the action from the first page so you really need to read them in order to understand the story.
The main character is Mielitta the Queen of the warrior bees. With her future in the forest protecting her bees she seems content until things start to change.
Her man inside the Citadel Kermon is at risk for being exposed as the traitor he is. When two of his students go through the wall and get lost he has to find them but things aren’t that straight forward. With evil forces working within the walls could this be a mission no one can win.
Also when Mielitta’s husband and friend also disappear through the wall she ends up on her own quest to save them returning the the Citadel.
Can everyone make it out of this story alive? Will we now learn the full story of Mielitta’s birth? And can Mielitta save her friends, her bees and teach the people of Citadel that perfection isn’t the only way of living?

This is the third book in this series. The story holds true to the other two. I would recommend reading them to follow along more easily in here. The characters are lively and there seems to be a lot of movement between the Citadel and the Forest. I did struggle with this one a bit. There is a lot of looking into the scenes and not a lot of dialogue. That is the type of story I am not a huge fan of. I enjoyed the discussions the characters had as the story unfolded. I got their meanings and felt their feelings. Panic, fear, loyalty and friendship. Overall while the story is good it’s not my favorite of the series.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire is a YA story where a Jinn (Genie) who wreak havoc on unsuspecting humans. It is a very short coming of age tale where a 16 year old Liam has always had bad luck and is bullied etc and thinks he is cursed but he can also see when trouble is a foot. I was immediately intrigued by the synopsis and couldn’t wait to dive into this book. However, I ended up being a little disappointed. I found this book incredibly detailed and intricate, which I found to be a bit hard to follow. I felt like as I was reading, I was constantly trying to piece everything together which sort of took away from my reading experience.
However, in saying that I am honestly in awe with all the detail, this author has created such an original world and storyline, one unlike any other. As someone who reads every day, I can say that this is incredibly hard to come by and I did really enjoy that aspect.
This was my first book by this author but I can honestly say it won’t be my last. I do look forward to exploring more of what this author has to offer. This is a truly unique read that I won’t soon forget.

City of Whispers by Katt Powers is the is the first book in the Imperial Assassin series. This is an action packed book from start to finish and I wasn’t at all sure how it was going to turn out. Dhani was an interesting character I and I enjoyed the strength that she seemed to have about her. She was easy to connect with and I felt like I could envisage her journey quite well. The book I thought was well written. It was well paced and a pretty exciting story. It caught my attention easily and I became engaged with what was happening. As this first book I have read by this author it was a great introduction and I am looking forward to reading more.

So, this was a great young adult read and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it. For me, the best part of this book was that it featured a male as the main character because there are so few books out there now that do. I loved how the story incorporated a single-parent home life, teenage romance, magic, and mystery all together to create such a relatable book. I fell in love with the story immediately and didn’t want it to end. In fact, I am hoping that there is a follow-up to this story because I could certainly see this having several sequels to it. I felt that the author pulled me into the story as I was reading because her writing skills were so keen and informative. This was the first book I have read by this author but I’m going to check out more of her work from the library because if all her books are as good as this one then I’m going to become addicted. If you have a young adult male reader in your household or know someone that does, this will make for a great read for them.

This epic conclusion to the series was everything I was hoping it would be. Such a fantastic adventure, it stands well on its own but truthfully is that much richer having read the whole series. Gill has done a beautiful job creating this world and these characters. Loved every page.

The Ocean’s Light is the first book in the Blood of the Pirate series by Mina Chara. I love Ms. Chara’s Hero High series, so I was quite excited to find she had released a new book and discover that it’s also the start of a swashbuckling new series. She had me on the first page- reading The Legend of the Light introduction to the story was all I needed to see to know that I was going to love this story. And I did. This is Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean- a wonderfully original swashbuckling pirate adventure- a treasure hunt full of action, intrigue, mystery, danger, drama, curses, and so much more. I was glued to the pages, not wanting to put the book down until I had read every last word. I am hooked on this book/series- and really can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. I am so happy that this story was so incredibly good, as there were a few editing issues (Amazon Au verified purchase Kindle copy) which pulled me out of the story and disrupted the flow. Simple things that should have been picked up in the editing/proof reading/Beta reading phase- and had they been, this book would have been all the better for it. Issues such as getting characters mixed up, referring to an MC’s as he, when they are she- or she, when they are he. Starting off in a MC’s character perspective (Slim) and then calling her Bulk (another MC). Sentences that don’t quite make sense, because of the use of wrong words, and simple typos like using ‘in’, instead of ‘at’. So, I am so very relieved that the story was so captivating, because becoming immersed in all the action and adventure did help to distract me from the editing issues- to the point where they didn’t detract (too much) from my overall enjoyment of the story. I am invested in this series now, as it has captured my imagination and got me thinking- my mind is pondering all the various scenarios of where we can go from here. I can’t wait! Bring on Book #2! This book is an imaginative retelling of the evergreen children’s classic Peter Pan. The book’s central character is Captain Shaw, whom we know as the notorious Captain Hook in Neverland. This tale is about the humane side of Captain Hook and what caused him to be the notorious man he is known to be. Captain Hook was a pirate, and was an honest pirate with his heart in the right place. He cared for his crew, and the women who came into his life, even for a brief fling. He begets a son from one such fling, is kept away from him for several years till one day, he is united with him. But his son joins the Lost Boys troop of Peter Pan and gets accidentally killed in one of the pirate encounters. This causes Hook to seek vengeance against Pan. He tries different venues to get to Pan, but is incapacitated with his inability to fly. To get near Pan, he first captures Tinkerbell for fairy dust, then befriends a beautiful witch who claims to be the sister of the Sea God Neptune, and falls in love with a mermaid who is Pan’s best friend. But in his plotting and scheming, he loses his edge and falls prey instead of being a predator. Desperately in love, and now a target to an evil power, Hook tries to hold on to the humane side and for a brief time even forgets about his vengeance with Pan for the greater good. But will his good side prevail and make him a better person? Or will the cruel fate take away what he is holding dear to heart and make him an evil heartless villain? That forms the crux of this story. The language is beautiful and the book is a very easy read. But I did have some qualms on the plot. I felt it a little convoluted at few places. But I really enjoyed this imaginative retake on one of my childhood classics.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. This is my favorite one in this series. If you haven’t read the first two it is my suggestion that you go back and read them. This story is full of action, danger, magic, wonderful characters and more. The author weaves such a detailed rich story that you feel like your right there in it. I had a hard time putting this book down. I found this book to be refreshingly original. I will definitely be reading more books by this author. I recommend this book and series as a whole.

Hook’s Little Mermaid (The Untold Stories #1) by Suzanna Lynn
This is the first book I’ve read by Lynn. It won’t be my last. The Untold Stories Series is a Fairytale retelling of Captain Hook and Little Mermaid. Can be read as a stand alone.
Captain James Hook is looking to revenge the death of his son. Tinker Bell becomes his fairy friend while Red becomes his wolf buddy. Peter needs to taken care of, but will a mermaid change his mind. The quote I chose for James is: “I don’t need to trust them. I just need the dust. I believe any fairy would happily exchange some dust for its freedom.”
Elynna is a mermaid in Neverland. When she meets James she soon learns that he wants to do something horrible. When she learns the story she decides that she’s going to take into her own hands. The quote I chose for Elynna: “This is not the way to honor Owen. Be the man he was proud of.”

The World Beyond the Walls: epic dystopian eco-fantasy (Natural Forces Book 3) by Jean Gill – was an excellent third book to this series. I think there’s some wiggle room for another book. I will really hate it if this is the end. This is just a really good story however, it does give you something to contemplate and think about. What exactly is perfection? And is that something we would really want? What would the unintended consequences be? Interesting thoughts.

This is the first book in the Nite Fire series. It started out kind of slow but keep up with it, I promise it is worth it.
Dahliah Nite, a supernautal crime scene cleaner, empathic shapeshifter, fire throwing dragon hybrid; half human half dragon; as known as a Lyrriken. She is exiled from her world, it had been 97 years since she made her escape. She is hiding, or at she is trying to hide. Coming back to the small town even though she had lived there previously can be risky. She is recognized by one human, he believes her to be a vampire and she hasn’t done anything to deter his thinking, the less he knows the better. But when she is put on a case involving fire she knows it was Lyrikken involved, but she doesn’t know why and why so many lives. As she gets deeper into the cases, running to lyrikken trying to figure out who she can trust and who is here to come to cause harm. She is partnered with Officer Evans, neither are good at working together. But has these progress she has to decide who she can trust and solve the murders/fires. But saving Evans after he accidentally stumbled into another world. She has to save him but just how much of the truth can she tell him, he already had suspensions. The book is a really good read it does take time, it is a rollercoaster but I can’t wait to read book 2 to see how the story continues. And what happens with Dahliah and Evans.

The Ocean’s Light by Mina Chara is the first book in the Blood of the Pirate series. This is a well written young adult book that is full of adventure on every page. I loved that the way the author had written the blurb as it felt like I was going in blind to the book. Because of that it was like I was experiencing everything right there along with the characters. This was an exciting and fast paced story that will really appeal to someone of the genre it is written for. The book was so easy to read and was so enjoyable. I am looking forward to seeing what is next in the series.

I enjoyed this young adult fantasy story. This is the second book in this series which I would highly suggest reading the first one as it is just as enjoyable. This is a series that takes childhood stories to another level. It is well developed and full of adventure. The characters took me on an adventure and made me feel part of it. They are connectable and kept the story engaging. In this story Red Riding Hood goes hunting for the Big Bad Wolf. Then you add Captain Hook to the plot and they will keep you reading to the end. This is a great story for any young adult. I highly recommend it.
