Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan – Review by Shannen Kern

Key West DeadKey West Dead by Mark Nolan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My favorite duo is back! Jake is a war veteran and Cody is his canine companion from their war days together. Jake’s special skill is finding trouble wherever he goes. This time around it’s a bomb-maker in Florida who sets his sights on Jake once they’re onto him. Will Jake and Cody be able to find the criminal before he causes a catastrophe? This author does such an amazing job weaving an incredible storyline with suspense and mystery that is difficult to put down. I also appreciated the description of the scenery as it made it feel like I was there in Florida! I highly recommend this entire series, but if you want just one fast-paced thriller, don’t miss out on this one!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in the Jake Wolfe Thrillers Series, and it has made itself a staple in my library. I get tremendously excited when I hear there is another book in the series coming out. The amount of times Jake and Cody have saved others increases with each book, but have they met their match? This threat is the biggest yet, and it just seems like they are up against insurmountable odds. Full of suspense, danger, and twists around each chapter, you’ll find yourself struggling to put this book down just so you can find out what happens next. I do enjoy that the author brings in characters from past books in the series, but you can still read this as a standalone. You’ll run to pick up the rest of the series once you read one!

I have read one book by this author before that I really enjoyed, so I was excited to start this series! Something that really stood out to me was how realistic the characters felt. I was invested in them quite quickly and felt like I was experiencing the story instead of reading it. The drama was at a perfect level that keeps you engaged and interested in the outcome, but not so much that it overwhelmed the plot. This story kept me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning to the last page! I highly recommend picking this up and letting yourself get lost in Jake’s world. I am already into the next book in the series!

Jake and Cody have quickly become some of my favorite characters in any series. Jake has some crazy ideas and I love watching how Cody helps Jake with these ideas. This story moves quickly and there were so many times when I thought for sure that there was no where else for the story to go when another twist comes out of the woodwork. Throughout the series Jake makes fantastic connections with other characters. Although these books each function as a standalone, Mark Nolan leaves threads that bring characters back up in some way.
Mark Nolan knows how to craft a thriller, it is filled with twists and turns that keep you riveted until the very end. I recommend reading this one and the rest of the series!

Once again, Jake and Cody are back and where they go chaos is soon to follow. I don’t know if chaos is the right word but I do know that where they go leads to a book that I find absolutely exhilarating and hard to put down. Every once in a while an author creates a character that I find myself consistently wanting to read more of. Mark Nolan created this in the character is Jake Wolfe. I am so excited everytime I see that there is a new Jake Wolfe book for me to read. I know that it will be a book that sucks me in and sends me on a fast paced suspenseful ride. This story definitely ups the suspense factor as it seems so much more realistic than some of his past books. Not that any of the others were far fetched but I think it is really because the story hits so close to home for me. This is book 5 in the series, but each and every book so far would be able to be read as a standalone. But I definitely recommend you read each of the series as you will be entered into the world of Jake Wolfe.

This is a very well written story. The characters are completely well developed and interesting. I loved how Cody (the dog) was such a great part of the story. Jake is always in the wrong place and the wrong time and that really drives the story. That and his secret past. I found it interesting that he was engaged to someone he felt he had to record. This part of the story really felt somewhat relatable to me but it definitely also felt like it was the stuff that reality shows are made of. When he finally comes to his senses and moves out things get even more interesting. I truly loved how fast paced the story was and how there just seemed like so much depth to Jake and the whole plot. I definitely recommend this one as it was well written and fast paced.

Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan – Review by Amanda Swindle

Key West DeadKey West Dead by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Key West Dead is book six in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series and can be read as a standalone. This one is probably my least favorite of the series so far, and feels rushed and not executed as well as the previous books were. It could be that I am used to Jake and Cody now, and predicting what is to come, so it could be a biased focal point for me. This time around, the duo are on a boat in the Keys with long-time girlfriend Sarah when someone decides they want to take out all the military in attendance. Cody is an ex-war dog that can do it all, and this time is no exception, and goes right to work helping Jake discover who is involved and taking down the bad guys. While we still have all of the action, danger, and over the top scenarios, the last two books have also had quite a bit of romance in it as well. This is still a good book to read, just not as interesting to me as the previous ones have been, but hopefully the next one will step back up to the plate. Anyone that is new to the Jake Wolfe Series may love this, as there is a lot to unpack in it, just like the others.

Deadly Weapon (Jake Wolfe, #5)Deadly Weapon by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deadly Weapon is the fifth book in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series and can be read as a stand alone. Reading the previous books does help with the character development but is not necessary for the story and plot line. Action, danger, and trouble seems to follow Jake and his ex-war dog, Cody and this time is no different. Deadly Weapon focuses on something we have all recently dealt with…a global pandemic of a deadly virus. Now Jake and his beloved sidekick/dog must get to the bottom of who/what has caused the spread, and ultimately get it stopped before things get worse. I did like this one more than the previous ones as it was somewhat relatable and had a lot of issues we face going on in it. That being said, what can Jake NOT do? He has done so much in just five books, and keeps changing careers and gets his hands dirty in everything he does. I like the action and danger, but it becomes unbelievable and makes me lose the immersion that I love in a book. Still a great read and plenty of people will love this series for the fast paced craziness that always happens. I still adore Cody most of all, he is such a loyal and clever companion and always knows just what to do! I will continue the series to see what other trouble these two can get into next.

San Diego Dead: A Gripping Thriller (Jake Wolfe Book 4) by Mark Nolan – Review by Amanda Swindle

San Diego Dead (Jake Wolfe #4)San Diego Dead by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

San Diego Dead is book four in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series. As with the previous books in the series, San Diego Dead is full of action, drama, danger, and violence. Jake and Cody have returned again, and as we know, trouble is always present with these two. This time around, a dangerous cartel boss has set his sights on Jake and his loved ones and doesnt seem to be backing down any time soon. These stories are told in multiple POV, including Cody (the ex-war dog), so you get into the heads of good guys and bad guys alike. Even though I have read through this series, I do think this could be a standalone and easily followed without the previous books. Reading the entire series does give background and insight into Jake and Cody, but the excursions and things that happens becomes a bit much and unbelievable at some point. Everything that can happen, does. I do like the action and the fast paced read of this series, but wish it was more believable overall. I still say Cody is my favorite character, and is such a clever dog. I will continue to read the series to see where else Mr.Nolan can take us with these characters and how much more trouble they can find. Not a bad read at all for those that love the action and on-going troubles that follow.

Killer Lawyer (Jake Wolfe, #3)Killer Lawyer by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Killer Lawyer is book three in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series. Jake and Cody have returned for more adventures and danger, reminiscent of the previous books. This time around, Jake is a lawyer who also works in a secret agency, trying to find a killer who murders at random. The story is more complex than the previous two books, but still plenty of action and danger. As Jake gets more involved, the killer turns his sites on the main character, and his loved ones. This book is told in multiple POV so you get insight into the antics of different characters, including Cody the dog. I think my favorite part of this series is the dynamic relationship Jake and Cody have, and how they work so well together.

Vigilante Assassin (Jake Wolfe, #2)Vigilante Assassin by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vigilante Assassin is the second book in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series. Book two returns with Jake Wolfe and his very clever dog, Cody (who may be my favorite character). Cody is extremely smart and an amazing service dog that gets in the middle of the action and wins you over quickly. Jake, an ex Marine with has seen his share of action, continues to bring more to the plate. The book starts out fast and never slows down. There is A LOT of action and scenarios that happen in this one and is more fast paced than book one, which I did enjoy. My only complaint are the scenarios are very far fetched and unbelievable. For instance, Cody alerting Jake about a man approaching with a grenade launcher…who has a grenade launcher!? I do love reading multiple POV books and seeing things from different angles and there is plenty of that to be had with this series. You even get inside the head of Cody (the dog) as well and I found that to be unique. Overall, it is a nice read if you love action and military cat and mouse style books, and would give it a try for sure.

Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie: A Gripping Thriller (Jake Wolfe Book 1) by Mark Nolan – Review by Amanda Swindle

Dead Lawyers Don't Lie (Jake Wolfe, #1)Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dead Lawyers Don’t Die is the first book in the Jake Wolfe Thriller set, and also the first book I have read from this author. Former marine and current photo journalist, Jake Wolfe, accidentally comes across “The Artist”, a local murderer. Now that is is involved, the inevitable and predictable game of cat and mouse begins. The story was entertaining and kept me turning the pages, but was not my favorite, as I found some instances unbelievable and pulled me from the immersion. Some things seemed a little TOO conveniently set out for the elusive murder and while his games were fun to follow, they were also a bit cliché at some points. That being said, I enjoyed the characters and their many very different personalities, and that they were well written. I especially loved Cody, a very clever dog, and you get to see some things from his perspective as well! Some dialogue was left hanging, but let’s be real, conversations can sometimes be hard to write. I did, overall, enjoy this book, and will give his other books in the series a try and see if the story continues to develop and grow on me.

Mission Target is the seventh book in this incredible series. I enjoyed the canine soldier aspect of this novel. Cody is truly an amazing character! There is an exciting balance of serious and deadly situations with plenty of action, a little romance, and a hero who is true to his duty to America. While I don’t understand the call of duty for our hero, I appreciate seeing through Jake’s eyes what makes him feel that obligation. There is plenty of action, mystery and danger to keep you on the edge of your seat. The books in this series do good on their own, but it’s interesting to see these characters develop as each story progresses. I’ve read other books by this author and each one is an exciting thriller!

Key West DeadKey West Dead by Mark Nolan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jake Wolfe and his ex-war dog Cody are back in another of their thrilling adventures and this time, they are in Key West in Florida so that Jake can attend the wedding of a friend, it is a barefoot beach wedding at one of the resorts on the Marina and while Jake is mingling with the other guests and catching up with people, he has a feeling that all is not well, his neck is tingling and the feeling of a premonition of danger, despite the fact that most of the guests are veterans and it is probably one of the safest places in the Keys, but this feeling only intensifies when a drone passes by and looks directly at him, even though this particular hotel has a no fly policy. After the ceremony finishes and the reception is over, Jake and Cody sail the newlyweds to their cruising sloop, however, as they approach it, Cody alerts Jake that he can smell something on the boat, the newlyweds stubbornly don’t allow Jake and Cody to investigate, preferring to set off on their honeymoon instead. Unfortunately, minutes after they set off there is an explosion followed by a ball of flame as the boat blows up in front of Jake. As the authorities arrive and take control of the situation, Jake is struggling with feelings of guilt and remorse and he is blaming himself for not insisting harder on carrying out the check until he sees the same, or very similar drone flying around and this throws him into a rage where he threatens the person behind it and swears revenge.

The next day, all the local news networks are talking about the devastating event and the person who has claimed responsibility for it by sending them the drone footage, as well as their ransom demand for $30 million from Monroe County. Meanwhile, the criminal being discussed is planning their next targets, the timings of them, planning the method of placement and finding out as much as they can about the man who threatened them. Jake is having breakfast with friends and trying to make sense of what happened when Jake receives confirmation that his request to take Cody to check some of the other marinas in the area has been approved and so the pursuit of the bomber commences in earnest. When the group leave, Cody turns up outside the restaurant and so Jake splits off from the others to take him for a walk back to the marina, but just as they are passing the county courthouse, Cody signals that he senses something followed by Jake seeing an individual jumping out of a car and heading away on a bicycle. Jake realises what is about to happen and shouts a warning before firing a gun shot in the air to encourage people to listen and just as the two clear the area and take cover, there is a blast from the abandoned vehicle. Jake goes into marine mode and starts to fight the fires in the immediate area while making sure that people are ok while demanding that someone calls the authorities. When they arrive at the area, he again has to make a statement and he is again annoyed that he wasn’t able to stop it, or protect the people around him, but as he talks it over with people later on, he is even more resolved to help solve the mystery of what is happening.

As the days follow on and more attacks are planned and carried out, the locals and tourists are becoming increasingly worried by the situation, as are the local government, but they are worried about the economic impact it could have on this area which revolves around tourism. Will Jake and Cody be able to figure out who is behind the attacks and why before more innocent lives are lost, or will they be the next victims before they get the chance? This is another thrilling race against time where an ex-marine and ex-war dog take on another criminal with malicious intentions.

Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan is another excellent read. I really like these Jake Wolfe books. They are good whodunit novels, mystery, intrigue, plenty of action, and just the right amount of love. I have to say, in view of the way this story plays out, I’m really worried about that snake. One of the things I like best about Mark Nolan’s books is that not everything is made up. Even though some of it sounds science fictiony he always takes the time and trouble to tell you about his research on the things that he adds to the story. I really like that, I think you will too.

This was not my favorite of the series, can’t really pinpoint why, it just didn’t seem to flow as well at times. I still loved the book because I love Jake and of course Cody. It has always amazed me that this author can take a character like Cody and make him one of my favorite book characters ever. I completely enjoyed more of Sarah in this story. I would love to see more emphasis on these two, but seeing a few different sides to her in this part really helped. More focus on their relationship would make me really happy.

All of these books can be read as standalones but reading them all will give you a better feel for these characters. I’ve always said this would make for a great TV series and I do plan to binge read these sometime in the future as I really enjoy this author’s writing style and the edge of your seat suspense that is always offered.

Can’t wait for more!

I give Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan, 5 stars.

I should know better by now. When I first started this book, I wasn’t sure if I was really in the mood for this genre. My genre moods change frequently and I couldn’t decide on what I wanted to read. Of course, I was wrong. I was yet again quickly pulled into the story and could not put it down. I love Jake and Cody and the adventures they get themselves into. There is plenty of action and suspense in this book and it does not take long for it all to start. There are some surprises in this story too, one of them got me in the beginning. After that, I was hooked.

I love being taken for a thrilling ride filled with suspense, some laughter, some love, and some loss. This book has it all. The characters you love most are back too, along with new ones you will want to see again. A fan of suspense thrillers (not gonna lie, a huge fan of Cody too), I highly recommend this book.

Key West Dead is the 6th book in the Jake Wolfe series. It centers around the character Jake Wolfe. This book easily stands alone or as part of the series. I have not read the others in the series, yet I had no trouble keeping up with the characters or back stories. I do plan to read the others now as this book was so good. Mark Nolan did a superb job with this book. There were several things I loved about his writing. One, the characters appropriately cursed, and it fit with the characters. However, Mark Nolan didn’t just use the F word or other language. He would describe the language in such a way that you completely understood without being vulgar. The second thing I enjoyed was that there were no descriptive sex scenes. The main character and his girlfriend flirted, and the story alluded to them having sex. But it wasn’t crucial to the story and never went into great detail. This book was a fantastic read. I had trouble putting it down. I highly recommend you take the journey down to Key West and into the life of Jake Wolfe!

I am not usually a fan of this genre, but it was recommended by a friend so I thought I would give it a read. And I am glad that I did. I could see this story becoming a TV movie with all the action and romance taking place. I don’t think it would be a good fit for Hallmark but would be perfect for the Lifetime channel thanks to the murder and mystery that keep you in suspense. I loved the way the characters worked to solve their crime and even included a bomb sniffing dog as well. I love animals so it’s always nice to see them get their share of a story line too. I haven’t read any of the previous books featuring these two detectives, but after reading this one I certainly plan on it.

This is the sixth book in the Jake Wolf series, Key West Dead by Mark Nolan. Whenever I see a new book from Mark, I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I love, love, love Jake Wolf and Cody and the adventures or should I say misadventures that they find themselves in. As we know nothing ever goes the way you expect it to as we are giving little twisted gems that are thrown in to put you off track. Mark knows just when to add the humour and banter that goes on between Jake and his bestie Terrell and the other characters, they always make me laugh out loud. I always feel as if I have had a good work out after reading one of Mark’s books due to being constantly in a state of ready on the edge of my seat to jump up if needed and heart in mouth palpitations. On top of that we get an adventure on the seas and culinary tastes from around the Florida Keys.

Take it from me Mark Nolan is a must on anyone’s TBR list.
