Whom Shall I Kiss…An Earl, A Marquess, or a Duke? By Laura Barnes is a historical romance story. The flow of the story is a nice and steady pace. Barnes puts a lot of effort into making the story match the time period she is writing about. The characters are so descriptive that you feel like you are in the same era as they are. The story is about Sidney Hartridge and her theory. She wants to kiss these three men and find out which one would protect her honor. Things didn’t go as planned. What happens to the theory? What happens to her honor? What would you do if your father agrees to suiter that is apart of your theory test subjects?

This was such a cute book! The story could have gone on a little longer for me so that the characters could have more development, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Sidney is such an awesome character. I love how she is doing research on men to discover how they act and react to different situations involving a woman they are pursuing. The fact that she is doing this in the time period she lives in, where women are supposed to just stay home and keep their husbands happy, makes her that much more an amazing woman.

At first I was conflicted on who I wanted her to be with but the more and more I saw her interactions with Wilde, the more I wanted her to choose him and fall in love. Wilde as well as Sheffield are both horrible men, but you can see the change in Wilde. Sheffield is just nasty beginning to end. I wish we could have seen more of Rory, one of her best friends.

Overall a fantastic first book. I can’t wait until the second book to see what is in store for Sidney’s best friend Sophia. I feel like there may be something going on with her and Sheffield, and the story there seems to be very interesting. I would love to see more of Rory too.

I found this book to be charming and original. This story was very entertaining and I found myself laughing at some antics that go on. I loved Lady Sydney Hartridge character, she is intelligent and a bit quirky. I am sure that when she decided to move forward with her experiment that she never thought of what would happen if there were any feelings involved. This book had me turning pages to find out more about these wonderful characters. I laughed, I got angry and I was rooting for a good outcome for my favorite characters. You must read to find out if this experiment causes more of a scandal. This is a fun read, I recommend this book, can’t wait to read the next one.

I am not typically a fan of Regency Romance but this seemed like it would be a lighthearted read with a clever protagonist. The blurb set the story up nicely and I imagined it would be more of a satirical look at what happens with ruined reputations. It was not satirical in nature at all.

The story starts out strong. The plot is well thought out and the characters are easy to distinguish. While I realize this is fiction and with that truths can be twisted and reformed; there was just something about this book that seemed to contradict itself as the story moved forward.

I always admire an author who can put words to paper and follow a thought long enough to create a whole story (or series in this case). This book just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I have really enjoyed reading this story! It’s So So Good! This isn’t my first book by this author but I think it’s her best. She really was able to keep my interest through the whole story. Her characters were lively and I really just wanted to know who would Sidney end up with. The shift between each characters storytelling was so seamless! The best I have seen in awhile. I loved reading this from everyone’s POV.

Each of the main characters brought something to the story. The haughtiness, the best friend and the scoundrel all were great. The inquisitiveness of Sidney was perfect for her role as well. Her girl friend was a lovely addition as well. She is stout and ready for anything that Sidney would suggest. I’m sure something happened with Sophie at the brothel and I look forward to finding out in her book. I’m not sure if the male character will be able to be redeemed but I am sure this author will give it a good try.

This is a wonderful historical romance where the female lead is looking to change a few things about the women in her period. Does she succeed? I can’t say but it was terribly enjoyable finding out.

Whom Shall I Kiss…An Earl, A Marquess, or a Duke? (Tricking the Scoundrels Book 1) by author Laura A. Barnes tells the story of Sidney Hartridge, a bluestocking, living in Regency London, after watching her acquaintances get ruined by scoundrels Sidney decides to run a little experiment herself to see whom she can expose to the Ton as a scoundrel. As we all know, in the fictional world, nothing ever goes as planned. She doesn’t count on one of her targets being the man of her dreams.
This was a cute premise for a story, unfortunately the author lost my attention a time or two and while I liked the heroine she was at times, annoying. I enjoyed her best friend Sophia the most and I really want a Sophia of my own. This was an interesting story and I am looking forward to reading Sophia’s book to see who she ends up with.

This isn’t normally my favorite genre but this author has brought me some enjoyment of of it more than once. I’m excited to see more from this series hopefully because it’s got a lot of promise. Whom Shall I Kiss…AN Earl, A Marquess, or A Duke? Is the first book in Tricking the Scoundrels series by Laura A. Barnes. This is the start of a new series, and if this book is anything to go by, the series is set to be great. I have read all of Ms. Barnes books now, and I can honestly say this is one of my top two favourites of all her books. It is a superb historical/Regency Romance with some light-hearted drama, a little angst/push-pull, some humour, chemistry, and plenty of spice. As I have come to expect from Ms. Barnes, the story is well written, easy to read, and very engaging. I found myself invested in the character’s very early on in the story, and was cheering them on from the sidelines the whole way through. The characters were interesting and fully developed, with their own personalities, quirks and flaws- which made the story even more fun to read.
Lady Sidney Hartridge is a scholarly, scientifically minded, practical, determined, and progressive young woman -who is disgusted by the double standards of the times, and sets about to try and put a stop to them by conducting a ‘social experiment’, with herself as the guinea pig. To prove her theory, she targets three gentlemen and begins ‘researching’, with the goal to lure them into kissing her… and so the fun and games begin. But can she avoid a scandal? Will she be able to remain unbiased in her ‘research’? What happens when feeling become involved? All these answers and so much more can be found between the covers of this charming story.
I loved Sidney, not only was she very intelligent and beautiful- but she was also very liberal-minded, pushing the boundaries and the social norms of the times. I loved her friendship with her best friend Sophia (Phee)- they made a great team. I loved Noah, and quite liked Rory too- but the jury is still out when it comes to Alex… I am hoping the next book will allay my fears.
The only thing that I wasn’t a huge fan of in this book, was getting multiple POV’s in one chapter, sometimes two POV’s in one paragraph. But it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story, it’s just a personal preference of mine to have separate POV’s per chapter.
A wonderful start to the series and I am really looking forward to exploring the other instalments!

Thank you, Ms. Barnes!

I give Whom Shall I Kiss… An Earl, A Marquess, or A Duke? (Tricking the Scoundrels Book 1) by Laura A. Barnes, 4 stars.

Sidney is her father’s daughter, she would rather be doing research than attending the balls girls of her age and class normally do. She hates the double standard of the men of the ton getting away with things that would ruin a lady if she were to do the same. So she decides to put her research skills to the test. She decides to trade her practical clothing for something much more alluring and act like the giggly girl they expect. She wants to see if her theory is true. But she may have gotten in a little too deep. She has 3 men fighting for her, and things are moving much more quickly than she could have imagined. Will she be able to walk away with her data or will she disgrace herself and her family? Or will she find what she never expected — love?

I enjoyed this historical romance. It is fun to see a strong woman buck a society that was all male. Sidney and Sophia are great characters. I hope to see more of Sophia in future books. But the other secondary characters are great too and I hope we also see more of them. There is so much more to develop in the world. You never know just what Sidney will do next or how her suitors will react. We cannot forget the romantic part of this story too. The men all love at her differently, and she starts seeing things in a different light too.

If you are a fan of historical romance, this fun story is for you.

This is one of my favourite books of 2019 so far! I absolutely LOVE historical romance reads, it is by far my favourite genre – I could read them all day every day and this one was just fantastic! I loved everything about this story, the plot, the characters the author beautiful descriptive language – everything just made this story come alive whilst I was reading it.
Sidney was a fantastic female lead, I love when authors write about strong, independent females in this time period – they are so much more exciting to read about. I loved Sidney’s approach to ‘dating’ she certainly had a plan and intended to stick to it!
I can’t wait to read more from this series – I have a feeling it’s going to bout a wonderful collection of characters in my favourite time period!

Whom Shall I Kiss… An Earl, A Marquess, or A Duke? (Tricking the Scoundrels Book 1) by Laura A. Barnes is a wonderful historical romance book. I loved the storyline and the characters and often found myself laughing out loud at some of the thoughts and antics of the characters. It is a story I found myself not wanting to put it down turning page after page. I enjoyed Laura’s writing and the plot was well thought out. The MC is quite charming and is very likable, and I found myself enjoying the trouble she found herself in. I also enjoyed the character of Noah he is swoon worthy scoundrel but a fun character.

Sidney is a young socialite who does not play by the rules. She has decided to do an experiment to prove her theory on the goings on of the men of the ton. But what happens when the wheels are turned. Will she lose her chance at love.

It is a heartwarming tale and one who should not be missed. I look forward to Phee’s story

I loved the fact that Sidney has such an analytical mind and is putting it to use in order to expose the men who ruin reputations of women for fun. It was a bit difficult to suspend my disbelief that any of these men would actually face any repercussions at all but you never know, so I kept on reading. With a bit of a scientific mind myself, I honestly think I was more drawn to the parameters and different aspects of Sidney’s research than any other bits of the story. I kept wondering how she was going to make sure all of her information was going to be accurate if she was mostly going off memory. My first thought would be that Sophia would be helping take notes but she immediately struck me as to timid/ sensible to jeopardize her own future for this, and I would not blame her one bit. In comparison to a few other books I have read based around this time period and the life of the ton, Whom Shall I Kiss? is a lovely difference from other heroines who are concerned with family and finding a good match because it’s expected. While they each had their own nuances, I felt I could relate more to Sidney than others. Very excited for the next book.

Whom Shall I Kiss… An Earl, A Marquess, or A Duke? (Tricking the Scoundrels Book 1) by Laura A. Barnes was an okay read that has lots of potential.

As a fan of historical fiction in all forms of media, I was excited to get my hands on what looked like a light hearted, fun, spoof type read. It started fine, and I was drawn in pretty easy, but there was inconsistencies in speech, and there were some modern slang tossed in that pulled me out and made me go, wait what.. So with that said, some detail research would have helped with that slip up. Also our MC, as much as I liked her, had moments that fell flat and to me, felt like she missed the mark. There were some other things as well that another go at editing could fix. But I’m not going to dewll on that

Overall this book has an original fresh take on the era that it’s set it. I liked the idea, and in truth the plot was good, the characters interactions were good, fun, and the setting made you feel like a step back in time. Though I had some issues with it, I can see the gem under the roughness, and I have high hopes for the series to come. Like I have said, there was so much potential that this story is worth the read.

So pease take my recommendation and my approval, that you will find yourself caught in the mess that Sidney creates.

Happy Reading

Whom Shall I Kiss… An Earl, A Marquess, or a Duke by Laura A. Barnes is the first book in the Tricking the Scoundrels series.
For me this genre is the one I tend to lose myself in the most. Because it is so easy to imagine what it would have been like back in this time I feel like I can really emerge myself in what is happening. I didn’t quite get the same feeling with this book. It felt a little like the author were trying too hard a few times and that took away from the characters and the story.
However the overall story was good and well thought through. You could clearly see what the author was going for. The characters were fun and engaging and it was easy to become invested in them. As the first book in the series it is always hard to get straight off the ground as there is so much more of the settings to create. I think this book is a good introduction to the series and I fully believe it is just going to get better and better as the series goes on.

Rescued By the Scot (Romancing the Spies #3) by Laura A. Barnes ~ Review by Liz Vrchota

Rescued By the Scot (Romancing the Spies #3)Rescued By the Scot by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rescued by the Scot is the third and final book in the Romancing the Spies series from Laura A. Barnes. I would recommend that you read the novels in order even though it has been suggested that they can be read as standalones. They do overlap characters and have continuing storylines that make sense in ways that would not if you hadn’t read the previous two books prior to this one. I will say this is probably my favorite of the three books and it closed out the series in a well-rounded culmination. I would still like to make my suggestion that maybe a new addition of the novels with new covers be released someday. I just don’t think these fit, even for historical, and honestly are often deterrents for me to want to pick up novels that are often good books inside.

In Rescued by the Scot we find Skye looking for her brother and hoping that he is safe when and if he is found. She never saw what was coming nor did she expect to fall for the man she would capture in the process, Zane. To top it all off, she will be forced to give him up and risk breaking both of their hearts. What will happen for these two? Will they both survive with their lives and love intact?

Rescued by the Scot is the third book in the Romancing the Spies series by Laura A. Barnes. This has been an interesting and fun series to read. Although the stories contain quite a bit of drama and violence- and I was held in suspense quite a bit- there is also a charming quality to it as well. This story is an intriguing and action-packed historical romance that has kidnapping, hidden agendas, mystery, suspense, adventure, drama, betrayal, espionage, danger, action, seduction, chemistry, romance, and passion. This is the third book in the series, and could be read as a standalone, but having said that, this book may focus on a different couple than the first and second books, but there is a continuing storyline that bridges all the books, so I really recommend reading all the books to help build a better understanding of characters, backstory, and motivations.
Zane Maxwell is a recurring character in the series, whom I was hoping we would get to see much more of. Well, we certainly get to do that in this story. Skye is a fantastic character and the chemistry between her and Zane was intense. They really were so great together. But, Ms. Barnes doesn’t make thing easy for them- they have to work for their happiness. We also get to catch up with the characters from the previous books, which I appreciated. I am hoping that this isn’t the end of the Romancing the Spies series- hopefully there is more to come.
A wonderful addition to the series and my favourite of the three!

Thank you, Ms. Barnes!

*This review may contain spoilers from previous books in the series.*

Zane is a wild man and a rogue. All the ladies love him, and he readily obliges them. But he has another side to his life. He is bent on destroying an evil man out to destroy England. Although he works for England, there is a more personal agenda he is trying to obtain. One no one knows about. But things do not go smoothly for him. When he thinks the end is near, he meets her. A lovely woman with the greenest eyes and wonderful Scottish accent. She is an enemy, but he still can’t stop fantasizing about her.

Skye is on a mission to trade arms with a man she knows to be evil when she sees a prisoner aboard his ship. He can help her succeed in her mission, so she gets him released. She just needs to use him until she can find her brother. But she is not the woman Zane thinks she is. In fact she is so much more. She is only supposed to hold onto him until she gets what she was promised. But each day with him makes her want him more and more. Has Zane go ally met his match in Skye?

If you have read the rest of the series, I know you wanted to read more about Zane. He is such a complicated character. You know he is driven by his heart, even if it doesn’t seem like it. You want to know if he can finally meet a woman while will make him want to settle down. This book has it all. You learn more about him and meet another wonderful character in Skye. She is something else, but you can’t help but love her. The adventure and action is also in this book too. Many things happen, and you will be on the edge of your seat trying to find out just what happens next.

A historical romance with lots of action and adventure, I recommend this book and series.

Rescued By the Scot (Romancing the Spies #3)Rescued By the Scot by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the romancing the spies series and the third book that I have absolutely loved! Her stories captivate me from the beginning to the end and her writing just flows seamlessly. Skye and Zane were brilliant characters, so much passion and chemistry between them which resulted in some particularly steamy scenes between them. They had a great connection and I really enjoyed reading about them.
I have yet to find a historical romance writer whose books I cannot wait to read more of by I definitely have in Ms Barnes. I absolutely adore her writing, her attention to detail in both the settings for the stories and the amazing characters she creates. This book could be read as a standalone however I would also highly recommend books 1 and 2 you will not be disappointed!
I can’t wait for more from this author in the future!

Rescued By the Scot (Romancing the Spies #3)Rescued By the Scot by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Laura A. Barnes’ Rescued by the Scot is the third novel in the Romancing the Spies series. This historical romance was a reading pleasure to include the historical depictions, character development and the level of detail that went into this story that made it feel complete & full. I have read the previous two books within this series and the each hold their own, as well as, complimenting each other as part of the series. Zane and Skye were wonderfully paired in Rescued by the Scot – taking in their fiery connection and all the adventure that follows. Any fan of historical novels or those within a series should grab this book, an excellent read.

Rescued by the Spy (Romancing the Spies #2) by Laura A. Barnes ~ Review by Liz Vrchota

Rescued by the Spy (Romancing the Spies, #2)Rescued by the Spy by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Usually I am not a major fan of historical romances but, the first one in the Romancing the Spies series from Laura Barnes, Rescued By the Captain, was actually a really gripping read for me so I was back for more with Rescued by the Spy. This one was not too bad, but not my favorite of the two.

In Rescued by the Spy we get the story of Raina LeClair and Charles Mallory. Raina is on a mission to find out who is responsible for killing her family. When she finds them she has a particular plan in place for them. Charles is on his own mission to find someone, only his is to find the person responsible for his own kidnapping. He was also left for dead. There is one small hitch to this scenario, he fell for his kidnapper, and it just happens to be Raina. Turns out Raina feels for Charles too but knows that she can’t be all that he needs. Will they be able to figure out how to make a relationship work and to trust each other?

Just when you thought that all was enough confusion to figure out…. BOOM… it gets a whole lot more confusion. I almost felt like these two could have their own spinoff miniseries. For me, this is what drug down this novel and made it a bit difficult for me to follow and read. I am hesitant going into the third novel.

Rescued by the Spy (Romancing the Spies, #2)Rescued by the Spy by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Laura A. Barnes’ Rescued by the Spy is the second book in the Romancing the Spies series; this historical romance follows secondary characters introduced earlier in the series: Raina and Charles. This story provides excellently written suspense and adventure while including a steady mix of tension, attraction and romance. The author sets the stage with scenes that grip your imagination, pulling you into the past as you embark on the journey these characters are trailing upon. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a historical novel that captured my interest as well as this novel/series has. Laura A. Barnes is a talented author and does an incredible job in adding the historical elements to make the story have that realistic aspect to it. Overall, a great story!

Rescued By The Spy (Romancing the Spies Series Book #2) by Laura A. Barnes – Review by Angela Hayes

4 Stars

Rescued by the Spy is the second book in the Romancing the Spies series by Laura A. Barnes. It is an intriguing and action-packed historical romance that has kidnapping, romance, mystery, suspense, adventure, drama, revenge, espionage, treason, disguises, secrets, and lies. This is the second book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone, although this book focuses on a different couple than the first book, I do recommend reading book one as there is a tie in/crossover/continuation to the storyline. I have really enjoyed exploring this series of period pieces, as Ms. Barnes excels in bringing the past to life and creating characters who are so easy to love.

Raina LeClair is not your typical demure young lady- oh no, there really is so much more to her than she lets on. She and Charles Mallory have an intriguing history that will propel this story into a fast-paced adventure that had me hooked right from the beginning. Where the story leads, and the surprising developments really made for a very entertaining and enjoyable read.

I have already begun devouring book #3, which looks set to be incredible!

Thank you, Ms. Barnes!

Rescued by the Captain by Laura A Barnes – Review by Shannon Fowler

Rescued By the Captain (Romancing the Spies, #1)Rescued By the Captain by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“It all started with a kiss in the rose garden.”

Sigh. This is a sweet story set in the early 1800’s. There’s no texting or phones calls. Information was passed by word of mouth. The major way of transportation was by sea or horseback. Simple injuries and sickness could easily turn to death. Reputations were easily ruined and virtues could just as easily be preserved. There were pirates and unscrupulous people everywhere. These people add to the mystery and adventure of this story.

I enjoyed this story. The main characters, Thorn and Ivy, seemed in tuned with each other. Even in their love confused state. Thorn and Ivy are perfect for each other even if there are a few years between them. Thorn and Ivy are characters that learn not everyone is honest and true. This story was easy to read and with minor characters like Sammy, this story is complete.

This is my first book by Barnes but will not be my last as I am looking forward to Maxwell’s and Charles’ I stories. I hope to read that Thorn and Ivy have more adventures together as well. Barnes makes “being rescued” something we all should want!

Rescued By the Captain (Romancing the Spies #1) by Laura A. Barnes – Review by Liz Vrchota

Rescued By the Captain (Romancing the Spies, #1)Rescued By the Captain by Laura A. Barnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Normally I would have never even picked up this book just based off of the cover. I tend to avoid the covers that look like a Harlequin romance novel, simply because they do not keep my attention. However, I am glad that I chose to read some of the reviews and then give it a chance. It was a pretty decent read for a rainy day.

There is a lot of intrigue, action, drama, and of course pirates that will keep you reading till the very end in one sitting. It may not have been my typical choice of novel but the author, Laura Barnes, made sure to keep things relevant and interesting. I found myself relating to Ivy even though historically she is far different from myself.

Ivy is determined to save her brother. She is a strong willed woman and believes in jumping right away to accomplish what you wish to do. This does pose as a benefit as much as a deterrent. Something I too struggle with. She means well and eventually figures out her way, which is what really made me appreciate her character.

Marcus is madly in love with Ivy. His determination lies in protecting her. He never wavered in his love and devotion which made me love him. Too often guys are the jerks that have to evolve in a lot of romances. But this guy was consistent and I loved that about him.

Overall this was a great historical romantic read, with realistic problems to overcome before the characters can get that happily ever after they so desire. I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to reading the next book in the series, Rescued by the Spy.
