5 out of 5 stars

The story The Jack (The Immortal Series Book 2) by M.K. Harkins is a fantasy book that I loved reading. It is a book that hooked me in from the very beginning and I found myself not wanting to put it down until I had finished the last page. It is a story that has action, mystery, and danger. I loved reading about the characters of Archer and Sadie. Sadie is a girl who is conflicted about the way that she feels about Archer. She has a choice that she must make regarding him and it is one that has huge consequences. You could say it could be life or death. Sadie is kindhearted and a lovable character. Archer is a half-breed and also an outcast. The Readers don’t trust him however it seems that they have a situation that requires them to join forces. Archer is attracted to Sadie. When they touch it is electric and there are sparks between them. These two can’t stop thinking about each other. Where will their feelings lead them? There are evil forces making and executing plans. Will Archer, Sadie, and the Readers be able to stop the evil at work? Read this book to find out. This story had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. It is addictive and a page-turner. The story also includes some romance. I enjoyed reading about the other characters that interact with Archer, Sadie, and each other. This is a wonderfully written book that I would highly recommend reading. It is the second book in a series and that I believe should be read in order.

The Jack (The Immortal Series Book Two)The Jack by M.K. Harkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Jack is the exciting second book in M.K. Harkins’ The Immortals series. It picks up a couple of years after the first book, The Reader, ended with the extinction of (nearly) all of the Jacks – a race of immortals who bring terror and death to the world.
I’m glad there was a chance for Archer to develop more as a character, following the events of the previous book. It was also great to get to know Sadie – I really liked her as a character (and Eve!). The way she’d struggled over the years with her immortality and the mortality of everyone around her reminded me of other characters, such as The Doctor in Doctor Who and Tom Hazard in How To Stop Time. Many of the other characters from The Reader had a role, and it was good to see how they’d grown in the time between the books and look at them from different perspectives.
I love the fantasy world M.K. Harkins has created! I’m a big fan of urban fantasy and the meeting of the real world and something other. There’s also a bit of a sci-fi feel to it as the various immortal races employ advanced science and technology.
For me, this is a five star book. I’m really enjoying this series. It’s very original, intriguing and well developed. I’d recommend it to sci-fi and fantasy fans, especially if you like stories about immortal characters.

Please read THE READER (Book 1 of The Immortal Series) first. THE JACK (Book 2 of the series) is an amazingly fantastically layered story and it is my opinion that it will be a much more satisfying read if read in order. There are a lot of nuances and characters for which the groundwork is layed in the first book.

Ok, now my review… Today was an incredibly busy day being an adult. After finally getting home at 7pm, I started reading THE JACK and realized this was a book that deserved a pleasant treat while reading. As quickly as I devoured a pint of ice cream, I turned the pages of this book.

THE JACK is everything I was hoping it to be and 100% more. It has complex plots and twists and all the goodness that comes from the author’s brain. It is a visually appealing book and I was able to “watch it unfold” as I read along.

I do not write spoilers in my reviews so I am choosing to say nothing about the storyline. Just know that this series is in my top five reads of 2018.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes to read.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Jack is the second book in M.K. Harkins’ Immortal series and I recommend you read it straight after finishing the first book as then everything is fresh in your mind and you might be a bit disappointed in Archer but … this is his book, his redemption, his journey …
Archer is a Jack … and he is a Reader … he is a hybrid that is caught between two adversary races … and then there are the Seers … the avenging hunters of Jacks and protectors of Readers … and who is Archer? It will all come down to what he chooses …
The Jack is also Sadie’s story … Sadie who is pure, kind-hearted and … destroyer or Jacks! What a contradiction – gentle heart and a cold hearted killer …. How does one reconcile it? What will happen when Archer and Sadie’s paths cross … who will survive … is there a way for them to be together … do you dare to open yourself up and be gifted with friendship and love …
I hope it will not be the last book as there is so much more that the writer could grace us with … I have a whole movie running around in my head!

This is the second book in this series and is a Young Adult story that is engaging and fast reading. This book is about finding the truth for someone who needs to learn to believe in themselves. The characters took me on some twists and turns that left me sitting on the edge of my seat and just waiting to see what was lurking on the next page. It was great seeing Archer’s story even if he is a little insecure about himself but he is still my favorite. I highly recommend this book.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Jack by M.K. Harkins is the second book in The Immortal series. As good as the first book this book will be sure to keep you reading to the end.
Archer lives his life each day stuck between two opposing sides. A position he is responsible for since the betrayed he readers. It doesn’t matter that he saved them from destruction, only that he betrayed them in the first place.
So when he meets the immortal seer Sadie, he is not surprised to find out she is on a mission to destroy the remaining Jacks.
And yet the sparks between them are a bit hard to ignore. And when they are forced to work together more closely than anticipated it might be that the mission is no longer quite that simply.

This series is genuinely shaping up be to great. Another book that is just as riveting as the first was. I love the way this author fully immersed you in this world of Jacks and Readers. It is so easy to imagine yourself as part of the world they live in. I loved that you could also feel Archer’s turmoil and the difficult position he is in. This was a great book and I am looking forward to what else is to come.

I absolutely LOVE this author! Every book that I have read of hers I have loved and after reading ‘The Reader’ book 1 in this series I was really excited to get my hands on the second book. It was everything I expected and more, I was hooked from the very first page. The authors writing was just so easy to read, the words flowed seamlessly and it really was a pleasure to be immersed in such an amazing story. The characters were amazing and well thought out again – I’m still very much in love with Archer!! There were some great and unexpected twists and turns in the story, I loved the romance, the fantasy – in all honesty I loved all of it!
The Jack is another fantastic read by M.K. Harkins, I’m sure it would appeal to a variety of readers, especially YA, fantasy lovers and of course those romantics out there! The heat level is perfect for the story and not too much angst either!
I absolutely recommend this book and book 1 in the series also!

An impossible choice.

Should he save the woman he loves but can never have, protect humanity, or avoid a prison sentence that would stretch for eternity?

Archer is a half breed, caught between two opposing heritages – the Jacks, a bloodthirsty race who kills for sport, and the Readers, a docile race trying to save humankind. Two years ago, he betrayed the Readers, though, in a last-minute change of heart, saved them from ultimate destruction. But now he’s all alone, wallowing in unrequited love.

Sadie is an Immortal Seer with a dangerous calling: she must hunt down and destroy the last of the vengeful Jacks. But her quirky humor and gentle spirit make her an unlikely fit for the job.

Archer is drawn to Sadie’s pure, kindhearted nature, rekindling hope he might not have to live a solitary life, but he has no idea the danger he’s in.

When fate forces the mortal enemies to work together, Sadie must determine which side Archer is on, how much of his charm is real, and if she should follow through with her directive: should she kill him or save him?

About MK Harkins

MK has always been a voracious reader. After hitting a dry spell of reading material, she decided to write the kind of book she’d like to read. This resulted in the creation of her debut novel, Intentional. (Award for Best Sweet Romance – eFestival of Words- August 2014) Unintentional, Breaking Braydon, Taking Tiffany, The Reader, Famous by Default, soon followed. The follow-up to The Reader, The Jack, released August 2018.

When she’s not writing novels, she likes to spend her free time traveling the world, splashing in mud puddles (She lives in Seattle, what can she say?), watching movies and reading (!) She LOVES to hear from her readers

The Reader was an interesting 4 star read.

Ann wakes up on a beach with no memory of who she is and a gunshot wound to her arm. She ends up meeting Devon and Archer who were sent to find her and bring her safely back to the compound where doc can help her.

Both Devon and Archer definitely have different personalities. Devon was standoffish and short with Ann and Archer was charming and helpful. As I got to know them better and we learned more about Ann and the Readers, I understood some things even more.

Ann starts to have memory flashes here and there. I had a lol moment during the “rat” scene. Ann eventually gets confronted and threatened by someone who has some jealousy issues with her.

There are some twists, turns and a love triangle. This was a quick read with a good storyline. The secondary characters were great, my most favorite character was Lucy, her personality was bouncy and fun. I really enjoyed this book, although while reading I felt some similarities to some other books I’ve read. If your looking for some action and heart stopping moments this would be a good read for you. I actually would love to see more from all of these characters, maybe some history on them. Can’t wait to see what’s coming next from M.K. Harkins.

The Reader (The Immortals Book 2) by M.K. Harkins – Review by Cynthia Ayala

The ReaderThe Reader by M.K. Harkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Riveting and incredibly fast-paced, The Reader delivers a non-stop action ride that keeps the reader entertained and enthralled by the story and the characters. That is probably the best facet of this story, the pace because Harkins can do what many people cant, which is squeeze is massive amounts of history without bogging down the pace of the story or distracting the reader. Harkins approaches her storytelling the way she approaches it regarding Ann. She does not know much, and she has to learn a lot in a small amount of time, so Harkins gives the Ann the cliff notes version of history which is essential. Some authors do not do that which does not work out to well because unless it is essential, it can just make the story drag out. Here Harkins breaks up the history with tension, with a descriptive narrative of what the world is like in the present. So, with the break history lessons broken up by action and character dynamics, it makes for a great read because the story keeps up the momentum while also building up this world for the reader, a world that the reader can understand and get to know.

Some slight problems go hand in hand with the pace of the novel, but ultimately, they are minimal. It just follows the ending. The resolution was so quick; it happened in a snap and the redemption of the villain, it moves like a flick of a switch that their loyalties, it is uneasy to see a villain switch over so quickly without really understanding the motive. It was just too quick, the ending, and could have used a tad more action and character development here.

Nevertheless, it is a good novel. There is a small cast of characters that allows the reader to get to know each of these characters and how they fit with one another. There isn’t much room for character growth in this novel, but the way they all fit together and influence each other is what makes it fun and makes the reader invested in them.

Ultimately, this is just a quick read. It offers a great story that moves effortlessly with a quick pace that keeps the reader engrossed in the story and action of it all.

“The Reader” by M.K. Harkins is the first gripping book in The Immortal Series by M.K. Harkins. This book blew me away with the originality of the story, amazing characters and nearly non- stop action. To say I was pulled to it is an understatement. I couldn’t stop thinking about it! It starts with a young woman waking up on a beach, not knowing who she is or where she is. From there, the story gets crazy good but I don’t want to give away any details because they are SO GOOD! If you like books that are a bit off the norm, you will love this book! M.K Harkins has built such an interesting world with “The Reader” and I’m hoping for many books to follow! M.K. Harkins really keeps you guessing until the very end how everything will shake out and even in the end, I’m still not sure what lies ahead but I know I can’t wait to read it! This book isn’t very long, so give yourself a few hours to devour this book and get ready for “The Jack!” I clearly give “The Reader” five stars and would give more if I could!

5 stars!
Ann has no memory of her past. She is taken in by a group of people who call themselves the Readers. They have lived for centuries and are immortal. They also believe Ann is the Lost One, a very powerful Reader who will change their world when she is bonded with her soulmate. There are four different individuals who could possibly fill that role and they all have to see if they have a connection. With the Jacks attempting to steal her new friends work to keep her safe while also helping to restore her memory.

I loved Ann’s character as well as her friends Archer, Devon, and Lucy. They help her so much with the memory loss and the loss of her family. I also loved the excitement the storyline had and how easily it flowed. I could not put this book down.

After waking and not remembering what happened, Ann is on the beach injured and finds a community of readers. They believe she’s one of The Lost Ones, and it causes split thoughts in the community. Jealousy causes actions that turn to chaos.

The Reader (The Immortal Series Book 1) By MK Harkins. While I wasn’t immediately drawn in, I did eventually get hooked on this story of a young girl in a world she doesn’t know. Now I did take an instant liking to the main character Ann, I simply loved her character. In fact I liked every character for a different reason, each of them brings something unique and different to the story making for a really great reading experience. This book is more than just a paranormal type story there’s a healthy dose of suspense that keeps you on both the edge of your seat and the tips of your toes. The characters are complex, flawed and believable. The author brings the story to life simply with the way it’s written. It’s well thought out and paced nicely. I’m excited to read more. Giving this story a five star review and highly recommend it.

The Readers is the first part of a duet by M.K. Harkins. It is not the first encounter with this writer and when this book popped up on my radar then I knew that I have to pick up a copy as I absolutely loved the other books I had read by her! I was though not ready for it!
I would call it paranormal love triangle … what else would you call when you have highly evolved humans who can read minds (Readers), humans who can hijack other bodies (Hijacks), and Seers who have been wiped out though … so we have that crazy world where the Seers have predicted a very special Reader will be born one day who will unite everyone … this is the stage where we meet Ann and Devon and Archer. When Ann wakes up in shallow water she has no recollection who she is … can you imagine being only eighteen, shot and without your memory? Who can you trust, where will you go? Can she trust those two young men – Archer and Devon – who approach her?
The writer takes us down a rabbit hole filled with lies and murder and betrayal … well, she actually takes us to a mountain top but you get me … it is an intense story that is fast paced and doesn’t leave many cold … cannot wait to see what the sequel brings us!

Wow, this book had me turning pages so fast because I couldn’t absorb the story fast enough. There was no way I could take a break to be an adult while reading it.

This is the first book in “The Immortal Series” and I’m so glad I have book 2 downloaded already.

This story had a familiarity about it but was different enough that it heads in a direction I was not expecting. I read this blind so wasn’t sure exactly what the story would be about.

The character development is spot on. The descriptions of locations was detailed enough to be visual but not so detailed that it dragged the story down. The story has a very obvious beginning, middle, and end and has a well thought out plot. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This is a fantastic book for young and old readers alike.

The Reader was a really great, fast paced read. This isn’t the first book that I have read by this author in fact I have read quite a few so I knew that I would be in for a great read and again I wasn’t disappointed! The story was full of fantastic plot twists and turns, great characters and a unique storyline that made for a thrilling and exciting read.
The authors’ writing was brilliant, the world building particularly good. I was already hooked on the book after reading the blurb but once I started reading I knew it was going to be one of those hard to put down books. The book really did start off strong; whilst there were a few parts that felt a little rushed I still enjoyed it immensely. I liked the main characters and thought that they developed well over the storyline.
I would absolutely recommend The Reader to sci-fi, paranormal fans and definitely YA’s. I am looking forward to book 2 in the series.

It is always refreshing when you are able to go back and read a book by an author that was newly introduced, but that made an impact on the readers. This is what I felt when I started Unintentional by MK Harkins. I loved watching how the author grew as a writer within these books.

I have to say that although Cade’s story begins with a heart break, it’s quite nice to see where his story goes. Every decision and choice that is made has in impact. And it’s those impacts that I was thrilled to see. I loved his character, and was more than happy to cheer for him. I was hopeful for his future as well as who would stay in his life. I loved his journey – as well as the other characters that were introduced in this book.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading more books by this author. This was a definite 5 Stars for me!

Unintentional (Intentional Series Book #2) by M.K. Harkins – Review by Angela Hayes

5 Stars

Unintentional is the second book in the Intentional series by M.K Harkins. I absolutely loved Intentional (Book #1) and was both happy and sad at the end of the book- happy because Mattie and Jeremy found their happiness- but sad because Cade was hurt in the process. I really loved him in that book- so I was really excited to find that he would get his own story and a chance to find happiness, once more. I did have a lot of expectation and knowing how the story had ended in book one I felt Cade deserved an epic story of his own to make up for the way things played out- also, I was very interested to find out what happened to him in the two years between the end of Intentional and the epilogue that followed. We get a tiny snippet, from Mattie’s point of view, and a bit of a glimpse at how this story may start off- but I really wanted to know what happened. I really think Ms. Harkins has done a superb job with this book- it’s excellent- every bit as good as the first, if not better! Even though it is book two and the sequel to the first story- you could read this as a standalone, as Ms. Harkins does a great job of recapping the whole thing (from Cade’s POV)- but having said that, I still recommend reading Intentional first, because it’s there that you will fall in love with the story and the characters- which will enhance this reading experience for you.

As with the first book, the characters are wonderful, beautifully developed and fully realised individuals. I love Cade even more now than in the first book, he’s so swoony- the perfect book boyfriend, and I am definitely adding him to my haram. Hey Ho!!! I wasn’t sure I was going to like Laurel, especially after Mattie- but I soon found myself changing my tune and am a big fan of hers now! And again, there is a lot going on in the story- and a lot more to the story and characters than first meets the eye. There was so much suspense, surprising and sometimes shocking and heart stopping revelations and developments. I devoured the story in one sitting, just so I could find out how the story played out!

Perfect!

I wonder what Ms. Harkins will do next? I can’t wait!

Thank you, Ms. Harkins!!

Unintentional is the second book in MK Harkins’ Intentional series and I have to say that after reading her debut book of Intentional, I was blown away by how much more Unintentional was. I fell in love with Cade in book 1 and I understood why Mattie did not choose him and I was hoping, hard, that Cade would get his own story and yes, it took two years (the timeline in the stories) to get him to his story but man, what a story it was – angst, heartbreak, up and down, push and pull, a bit of humour to keep it from getting too heavy and then all those amazing ‘sidekicks’ (Sophie and Shirley and Scott and ….) that I hope will keep the series going!
Thank you for giving us a simple story that has no cliffhanger, no ‘i-wonder-what-comes-next’, just a beautiful romance between two amazing characters – Cade and Laurel – we do not need craziness in every single story we read!

This story was addictive and a page turner, couldn’t put it down. Cade’s character is the epitome of that bad boy allure that you just want to tame or find that secret way to get within that hard shell that is just begging to be cracked. There is a mix of dynamics running about within the story that keep it suspenseful and attractive at the same time. By the time I finished this story, I knew this was an author I enjoyed!

I don’t want to hear about how happy she is, how everything turned out just the way it should have. Well, it didn’t. She should have been with me.

The sequel to Intentional, the debut romantic novel by MK Harkins, Unintentional is the heart-racing new work that follows the tangled thread of Cade in the aftermath of his heartbreak in losing the one woman he thought was his soul mate. After taking a hiatus from his job as an engineer, as well as his role in the band as lead singer, Cade reemerges in the Seattle music scene.

Enter Laurel, the tenacious and determined music agent. Laurel is determined to sign him, no matter how clearly reluctant he is. Though they try to resist one another romantically, the magnetism is as immediate as it is powerful.

Cade has every reason to steer clear of commitment and train his soulful eyes, heart-melting dimples, and sexy voice on every beauty competing for his attention. So why does he find himself truly, deeply, and unintentionally fixated on the one woman who is not so easily swept away?

I enjoyed UNINTENTIONAL better than the 1st book. I am so glad that this book was written. I had expectations of how it was all going to play out and because this is a spoiler free review I will not go any further with that thought.

I enjoy the way this author writes. The story flows well and takes its twists and turns smoothly and purposefully. Characters were well developed and all of my questions are satisfied.

I recommend this series.

Unintentional (Intentional Series #2) by M.K. Harkins – Review by Jenni Bishop

Unintentional (Intentional #2)Unintentional by M.K. Harkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Unintentional (Intentional Series Book 2) by MK Harkins is a quick and easy read and is  a romance with a twist same as the first book in the series. You need to read the first  book first as the characters are the same and the stories crossover. It is an enjoyable  read where love does not come easy and leads to betrayal. MK builds an interesting  story where you know something is going to happen but you have no idea what until  the very last minute. The story line flows nicely and keeps you intrigued and engaged  and the characters are lovble and believable and told in each POV’s. Can’t wait to see  wait comes next.

Intentional (Intentional, #1) by M.K. Harkins – Review by Moriah Venable

IntentionalIntentional by M.K. Harkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Intentional is the first novel in the Intentional series by M.K. Harkins. This is my first novel by this author.

Newly engaged Mattie Taylor is happy with Jeremy, preparing for their wedding but with only a month before the big day, she finds him in a composing position.

She packs up her things and moves to Mercer Island and starts new life for herself. While there, she meets Cade and starts to feel happiness again even though she still has feelings for Jeremy.

But when Jeremy re-enters her life, will she be able to listen to her and trust that things were not what they appear or she will move on with Cade?

I knew from the premise that I was going to enjoy this book, but I wasn’t prepared for how much. I finished this one sitting and I can’t wait to read the next book.

I was confused by the beginning at first because I expected to get right into the story but instead we got an introduction to the characters and their professions as well as how Jeremy and Mattie meet and grow close. We also get a glimpse of Mattie’s friendship with Sarah.

I will admit, I didn’t see that revelation though I was right on part of it, but it was a real shocking. Mattie talking to Cade at the hospital had me tears while I was reading at work.

I look forward to reading the next book.

Intentional (Intentional Series Book #1) by M.K. Harkins – Review by Angela Hayes

5 Stars

Intentional is the first book in the Intentional series by M.K Harkins. This author continues to surprise me with every book. I have read all her books now and I have loved every single one. She has proven that she can write anything and do so incredibly well. This book won me over from the first few pages, I was pulled into the story, engrossed by what I was reading and couldn’t have put the story down- even if I had wanted to. I needed to know what would happen and read the book in one sitting- just to find out how everything ended.

The characters are superb, really well developed and fully realised individuals with their own personalities, quirks and flaws. They are really likeable and endearing- or completely unhinged and detestable as in the case of one particular character- but being able to sway her readers to either love or hate a character, just proves what a supremely talented author Ms. Harkins really is!

There is a lot going on in this story- and more to the story and characters than might first meet the eye. I loved discovering all the details, devouring the story, and just loved everything about it.

Mattie Parker is a 23-year-old graphic designer who has just moved to Sedona with her best friend Sarah, who is a lawyer and had just been hired by one of the top firms in the area. The girls are looking forward to a bright future. When Mattie meets Sarah’s boss, Jeremy, for the first time, sparks fly- but his reputation as a ladies man makes her wary. But, he’s determined to get to know her, and as they spend more time together Mattie genuinely believes his reputation to be nothing more than rumours. They cement their love by getting engaged- planning their future together. Mattie couldn’t be any happier. Then her world is shattered by the worst betrayal imaginable. Broken and alone Mattie can barely function- she has trouble getting through her days, wallowing in her grief and heartbreak. She decides she needs a fresh start, moving to Mercer Island to hopefully begin again. There is no way she will allow herself to ever fall in love again, or to open herself up to any more pain and heartache- she doesn’t think she would survive it. When a sexy, mysterious stranger rescues her after she’s fallen into a river, she can’t help feeling drawn to him. But she isn’t capable of anything more than friendship. But Cade is patient, kind and caring- he’s slowly dismantling her defences with his nerdy engineer by day- and sexy, charismatic rocker by night personas. She has finally found some peace and new-found happiness- when Jeremy crashes back into her life….. bringing chaos and danger with him. What happens you may ask? Well I don’t want to spoil all the riveting details, so I recommend that you read all the exciting developments for yourself- you really won’t be disappointed!!!

This story had me hook line and sinker!!! I was devouring the pages to discover what would happen next!! This has definitely become one of my favourite books of Ms. Harkins! I have already started the next book, as I couldn’t wait to see where the story leads.

Brilliant!!!

Thank you, Ms. Harkins!!
