Scepter of Fire (The Vigilant Book 2) by LM Preston – Review by Ayla Phipps

Scepter Of Fire (Vigilant, #2)Scepter Of Fire by L.M. Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am truly in love with this world and the characters LM Preston has created the intricacy in which characters from books, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 are consistent. They were introduced in one and each book you learn more things about them that were not known in the previous books. I have read the previous 3 books in this series so far, the 2 from EmVee and now both from Dexter. Once again, the half book Unbreakable Darkness is not required to read before Scepter of Fire, but it helps fill in a lot of the story and plot points. This book picks up where Unbreakable Darkness ends.

Dex remembers the car accident, the family car going off the bridge and hitting the water. He worked to get his siblings free of their seatbelts starting with his older sister EmVee, her friend Kayson appears and pulls her from the water, and then darkness. Waking up in a hospital room held down by chains, he overhears people talking about the hospital is going to be coming down. A doctor comes in and informs him that his older sister and father are on the same floor as him but that they couldn’t save everyone. His goal becomes clear, get his sister out of the hospital. Seeing Kayson, the memories return he pushes him into EmVee’s room and tells him he must get his sister out of the hospital now, and the window is the only option. Kayson is shocked saying they are on the 6th floor when Dex says, “You go this, you’re different. I see it in you.” With a nod Dex leaves, surprises the guards with his strength for a “human” before he is hit with a dart in the neck. Trey, Dex’s elite initiation friend that he saves is bringing him food, in his cell, he attempts to escape and is stabbed by a dagger made from the Scepter Stone. Suddenly a month has passed, Dex gets some cellmates, and mysterious cocoon that Trey reveals is a girl, and a silver haired Siphoner that has escaped from 3 different holding locations. A gift from Trey, befriend him and he will get him and the girl out. But the ultimate shock is learning that the Void is not on Earth. Everyone that was human at one point was stolen from Earth to be the test subjects of a scientist named Sybil.

Will Dex succeed in his mission to be free again? Who is the girl in the cocoon and what makes the Siphoner the most dangerous experiment? The author is not telling the same story over and over again she is enhancing the story, adding layers to it with each new perspective that fills in the holes of the previous point of view.

Dexter has been a pawn for long enough. He has always been tortured and abused for the sins of his father, but not anymore. Dex is a really great addition to the series. L.M. Preston is growing to be one of my favorite authors, I can’t wait for the next book.

Scepter Of Fire (Vigilant, #2)Scepter Of Fire by L.M. Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dexter is one of four kids, he lived with them and their parents up until they moved to the Void and ever since it seems that trouble has been finding him jo matter how hard he tries to keep on the straight and narrow. This leads to a bit of friction between him and his dad and they couldn’t see eye to eye, but all that changed when they tried to leave and before he knew it, Dexter was on his own.

However, albeit he is away from his family, he is not alone, thanks to something his father did, Dexter is now feeling like a pawn in a whole new game, but this one involves torture and imprisonment, but the things he hears between sessions are what keeps him up at night. This is as well as the nightmares fuelled by the loss of someone precious to him, as well as past events which changed him beyond recognition.

This carries on for a while, until he is no longer alone, two prisoners join him and they hatch a plan to escape, but things never go as planned for Dexter and now he has to his hide himself from them, as well as those who wish to use him for their own gain. The joke is on them though as Dexter has learned more about the Void than he lets on, he knows there are magical there and he knows who is in charge as well as what they want, he also knows that they should have let his family go.

What they don’t know is that Dexter is determined to become a Vigilant and find his family, but will he be able to keep his feelings in check long enough to carry out his mission? This is a paranormal urban fantasy where nothing is as it seems and danger lies around every corner and in every shadow. It is an addictive story which you will not want to put down until you know how it ends.

BOOK TWO! Dexter’s life is a mess. He is separated from his family and his best friend is dead. He finds out that he has been living in The Void, kind of like the regular world but not. Mortals are not aware that they aren’t where they think they are. Dexter is trying his hardest to right wrongs and stay alive. Through many challenges, he just wants to become free and save his family and friends.
This was a good read, action packed, supernatural beings, and testing oneself. Please read the first books of the series!

Dexter didn’t like being a pawn. It seems life was taking him there though. He and his father never saw eye to eye, but being captured and tortured for his father’s mistakes gave Dexter too much to think about. First, the girl he lost; he’d never forget what they did to her. It changed him, and made him see the small city where his father moved him was a prison for magicals, the damned, and now him. Too bad, the creator of the Void didn’t realize they would be better off if they’d set him free, because now he was fighting for his life, and someone he’d have to hide his feelings from to protect, not just from those that want to drag them back, but from himself—a vigilant. The author did it again. I have never been disappointed with one of her books. This book is definitely the one with the most twist and turns and surprises out of all of the books in this series. True Colors is the third and final instalment in the Colors Trilogy by K.R. Raye. As with the other two books in this series, this is a contemporary New Adult story with romance, emotion, challenges, friendship, drama, angst, and humour.
As this is the conclusion to the series, I highly recommend reading the first two books before starting on this one- as knowing what happened previously will help you to better understand the characters, and their motivations- while also providing important backstory/storyline information (etc) that will definitely enhance you reading experience of this instalment (and the series as a whole).
Imani, Melody, and Lance have been through quite a lot since the beginning of the series. Together they have faced some serious challenges as they navigated their way through life. Their friendship was tested, and cracks opened up. In this book they are working at rebuilding their bonds, but it’s not quite that simple. We follow all the highs and lows and what happens makes for a great read, and is a fitting conclusion to the series…
Happy Reading!

Thank you, K.R. Raye!

I love the way the author is building up these stories over the course of the series. It feels like she is building toward something and I can’t wait to see what that could be. I enjoy these characters each time I read about them. I feel like, with each book, we get pulled more and more into their journey. This is book 2 in the Vigilant Series. I would highly recommend reading these books in order so you get the full understanding of the characters and the story. You definately need to read Unbreakable Darkness which is the book before this one and the start of Dex story.
After find out in the previous book that his whole life is a lie he now has to fight to find a way to escape the people who don’t want him free and to live life on his own terms.
Along the way he will face life changing dangers and discover some things he never knew. With friends old and new showing up it becomes hard for Dex to know who he can trust and who is going to be against him.
This story is full of mystery, danger and feelings of teenage angst that keeps the story moving at a fast pace. The way the author leaves the story sets it up perfectly for the next book and I can’t wait to read it.

Whew, this is Dex’s version of the paranormal mystery series of the Vigilants. This is one series that you want to read in order. Dex is in it deep in this one. With the help of some new and some old friends, he ends up on an adventure to find answers. Mystery, drama, and the paranormal make for one of the best YA paranormal series you’ll find out there. I picture it as a contemporary take on the battle for good and evil. Even as an adult, I eagerly wait for each new book this author puts out. Her writing is fresh, new and relevant. The characters all have personalities that are relatable. The athletes, though paranormal, sound like some of the jocks I knew in high school. Go ahead, you know you want to read this one. In this final installment of the trilogy, we see the friend group tested more as they experience the joys and sorrows of life. Imani now must cope with her own tragedy when she loses the love of her life. Melody is trying to support Imani and her fiancé, who was good friends with Marco. She calls on Lance, who is re-entering the group after a period of separation. I love how the characters are strong and independent on their own, but able to also lean on each other when life throws difficult times their way. Everyone could use an Imani, Melody, and Lance in their lives!

The Colors of Love was the first book that I have read by this author. I love that she tells a story in a way that is believable to what happens in real life. Not all the parts of the story have happy endings. Mainly follows the different relationships of a trio of friends. The group experiences a tragedy in the first few pages. Melody is left especially damaged from this event. Her best friends Imani and Lance try to love her the best they can. Lance is a college football star who is known as the campus playboy who doesn’t have long-term relationships. Melody struggles with commitment after abuse. Imani is focused on being happy, but sometimes that means making choices that were not a part of her plans. This book has a mix of different situations that young adults can experience.

True Colors: Book Three (Colors Trilogy)True Colors: Book Three by K. R. Raye
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I don’t even know where to begin. This author has kept me in emotional turmoil for the last month. This trio of friends have been through so much. Some of the pain was too real. I don’t think I have been this caught up in a book in a while.

This series finale picks up right where the second one ended. Imani is in crisis after Marco’s accident, Melody is barely holding everyone together, and Lance reappears. Trevor is the loyal friend/brother to Imani until his wife puts her foot down. Melody is finally in a positive, steady long term relationship. Lance is balancing life after football, his divorce from Heather, and his ever-changing relationship with Imani. Imani is adjusting to her new normal and trying to find a way to trust Lance again. Life never slows down for this trio of friends!

Melody gets married but finds out that married life isn’t everything she thought it would be. Imani and Lance, each battle ghosts of the past to make a better future. Melody is jealous of Trevor’s growing family as she experiences fertility issues. Lance attempts to find his way back to football through broadcasting and all the pitfalls that go with being on the road. Imani experiences loss after loss. Melody sinks into depression after a tragedy, Imani almost loses Trevor’s friendship because of a premonition, Lance finally has a relationship with his one true love.

Let me just say that I laughed so hard when Erycah, Imani, and Melody all wind up in labor at the same time. When that nurse kicked Erycah out of Imani’s room, oh the tee hees!! When Lance named his son, I nearly allowed the tears to leak out but held them back. When Melody got wheeled away, I almost stopped reading. I was not ready for this book to end. I was not ready for the series to end. To the author, thank you for such an amazing journey through the lives of these three friends.

Scepter of Fire is the second book in the Vigilant series by L.M Preston. This book is again from Dex’s point of view- so I highly recommend reading the previous books, especially Unbreakable Darkness (Book #1.5), as it/they contain important information that will help you better appreciate this story (and the series, as a whole). This book builds on what we learned previously, giving us a bigger picture of events, so far.
It is an action-packed YA fantasy with the plenty of the paranormal, supernatural, sci-fi elements, adventure, mystery, drama, danger, emotion, discovery, betrayal, agendas, tension, choices, challenges, intensity, and magic.
Dex’s life was turned upside down when his father uprooted their family and moved to this small town, which has changed everything he thought he knew. But fate hasn’t finished testing him yet, and this book sees him face more life threatening challenges…. And make a few new discoveries along the way.
This series is getting better and better the further we go…. next please!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, L.M. Preston.

I love this author with all that exists within my soul! I love this series that they have created and brought to life. This one I found explained things I had wondered about, and everything tied together perfectly!

The book is an amazing read. If you want to enjoy a strong character development along with fantasy and action as well as paranormal, then this is a book not to be passed up! I must say start with the previous story in this series. I really loved getting Dexter’s story, his side of things, it was a fun imaginative read and it held me till I reached completion! I enjoyed Dexter, his character development on its own. Who he was in the past, is not who he is anymore in the present. I really valued his worth and how strong bis heart is and was. The book was gripping and full of intrigue! Loved it all the way through! Couldn’t put it down!

Love this author and all books that they create and bring to life. This was no different. Cant wait to read the next, as I know I am in for a treat as well! Highly recommend this must read book/series/author!

Make sure to read these books in order and especially read Unbreakable Darkness book 1.5 in the series. It is Dexter’s story and is the prequel to this book Scepter of Fire which is book 2.

The Vigilant series is YA paranormal supernatural stories. Mix in some fantasy and science fiction and you have this adventure where suspense, betrayal and mystery, danger and sacrifice, paranormal beings/creatures and magic will lure you in. The story is action packed and fast-paced.

In this book we see Dexter trying to fix things he did in the past. Once again it is time to face things head on and hope he can save the others.

The ending of this book sets us up for the next.

It took me a while to get into the flow of these books but now I am enjoying it.

True ColorsTrue Colors by K.R. Raye

This book was the PERFECT ending to a wonderful trilogy. True Colors completes The Colors Trilogy and I loved every minute. I’m sad that it’s time to let these characters go. I guess it’s time to go back to book 1! This author brings to you a trio of friends throughout this series who have literally been put through the ringer. Every bad thing you could imagine to happen does, but it’s evenly balanced because it’s the same with the good.
Lance, Melody, and Imani are the friends I want in my life. Completely dedicated to one another, to protect and love each other. I loved all three equally, but I felt this reading book 1 and now that I’m finishing book 3, I can say that I’ve been partial to Imani. She’s so strong, yet so stubborn. I absolutely love everything about her. My heart breaks for her at the beginning of book 3, but she rises up and perseveres and I would expect nothing less.
To embrace these books and, yes I mean books, you need to understand that there’s going to be some heavy and strong themes running throughout. That could be potential trigger warnings, I don’t want that to deter you though. These books are wonderful and this author has me looking for her next book.
In conclusion, if you read books 1 & 2, what are you waiting for?!? If you haven’t please get all three and dive in deep into book 1. One you won’t want to put them down. Two you will fall in love with these three main characters and their supporting cast. Finally you will have found yourself a new author to love. That will test what you can handle, but give you some enlightening perspectives on viewing life.

I came to the bittersweet end of this beautiful trilogy and loved everything about it. I am sad that we won’t get to hear more about Lance, Imani, and Melody, but that is the sign of a great story – when you never want it to end.

While focused mainly on Imani, we still get to see how Melody and Lance are doing in their lives and how their friendship evolves. Imani is newly married and loving life when she endures a life-changing tragedy. Lance has been MIA for quite awhile and is thinking about being part of the Three Musketeers gain, but can he deal with the strife? Melody is always the peacekeeper in the group, but can she be that way forever or will she start rocking the boat?

The characters feel incredibly real, and I am sad to be at the end of this trilogy. I will continue to pick up K.R. Raye’s books solely from the amazing writing from this series. You won’t regret reading these so go on and pick them up!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Having read and enjoyed the previous stories in this trilogy, I was looking forward to this third and final instalment, and I was not disappointed. The storyline continues from book two, so I would recommend reading this series in order. It was great being back with the three friends, Imani, Melody, and Lance, who all feel a bit like old friends to me now too! The trio have been through a lot together and like friends are supposed to, they have stuck together through thick and thin. They have always been able to depend on each other before, but when tragedy strikes, yet again, can they still depend on one another. Imani Cabrette, has always been strong and proud, and never asks for help, however, following an accident her world changes forever. Imani needs to overcome her stubborn pride, as she’s going to need help from her friends. Melody Wilkins, is sweet and dependable and owes her life to Imani, but now that it’s Imani who needs help, will Melody step forward.
Meanwhile, Lance Dunn, has not seen Imani since she chose another man over him, can he forget their complicated past, and be there for her when she needs him the most. This novel like the previous two, took me on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it, and I was hooked from start to finish. The three main characters, are likeable and relatable and it’s been fascinating seeing how they have all progressed and developed throughout the trilogy, individually and as a trio. Their friendship has continued throughout each story, and has always come across strongly in the narrative. This was a real page turner, and I was happily turning the pages late into the night. I definitely recommend this series, and I’m slightly disappointed that I’ve now finished the trilogy and that I won’t be back with the friends again.

True Colors (The Colors Trilogy Book 3) by K.R. Raye. This is the 3rd book in this really good series. Its about true friendships in young adults lives. This book has Melody in a pretty good relationship, settled and for the most part happy. She continues to be a true friend thru it all to the group. Imani has married her best friend and is incredibly happy. When her world is turned upside down due to a tragedy she reaches out for her 2 closest friends. Will the be there for her or will they let her down when she needs them the most. Lance is finally trying to settle down for his girls but he’s decided that after a short fling with Imani he wants her forever. Will he show up for her when she needs him the most or will he let her down as he’s done in the past. The great series about love, life and true friendship is one you don’t want to miss. The friendships found in this series is very hard to find in life.

This is the 3rd book in the Colors Trilolgy.
This story bring to a close all the events that our 3 friends have gone through in their life’s and answers the question of whether friendship can survive any stormy waters? In this story the friends return to help and support one another yet again. But things have changed and questions are asked about whether they can be as supportive to each other as they once were.

Melody is finally happy in the relationship she has now but that relationship isn’t without its demons. With everything that’s happened in Melody’s past and dealing with the pain her partner is going through she has a lot to deal with, but when tragedy strikes one of her friends she rushes to their side but is she strong enough to shoulder all the additional pain?

Imani’s life is also on track now..she has married the love of her life and couldn’t be happier. But after a night entertaining friends her world is turned upside down after she receives a troubling phone call. Now desperately in need of some comfort and support she turns back to her two oldest friends in the world.

Finally we have Lance. He has always been the strong one. The protector of his girls. And after a brief fling with Imani that hasn’t changed. When his girls need him he will be there. However what he realises through this really trying time is that his feelings of Imani never left and that he wants her back. Talk about bad timing. How can he express his true feelings for Imani now with everything she is coping with? And if he doesn’t can’t he still be a good friend? The friend she needs to support and protect her now?

This story is one of love, friendship and discovery. Its about learning how to navigate situations with the help of your friends but we also learn how people change over the course of time and how sometimes the people we expect them to be isn’t the person that they have become.
All of the 3 stories have been emotional story’s and I’ve really enjoyed each and everyone of them

I have loved this book series since book one. This one was certainly no different. I love the bond these characters have and all they face and over come together. Its beautiful and magical in its own way.

This book was a strong read all the way through. Of course the drama and stuff the characters face were heart wrenching as well as heart warming at the same time. A character faced something I would think we all dread. But the awesome people you have by your side really can make a difference. That is what this bond was. They stuck together and worked through stuff, it was powerful. A really good read. Loved it.

This author is a really powerful writer. I love this series with a passion. I am so happy I am able to indulge and enjoy these books and characters. For sure a must read and a high recommendation from myself!

This is the third and final book in a trilogy. I absolutely loved this book and feel that some themes that were introduced in the earlier books were continued and ultimately resolved. My favorite part of this book is that it focuses on friendship. I feel that the friendships portrayed in this are by far and away very realistic. I found myself truly rooting for the friendships in the story. I could definitely relate to Imani who was facing her life being turned upside down. The struggle when she is realizing she is needing help from her friends was really something I could relate to. I also have to say that having read all three books, I enjoyed reading and seeing how they matured. I feel like they developed like my friends and I did. Although, perhaps with more dramatic moments than I’ve been through. I cannot recommend this book enough! I truly enjoyed it and am sad to see the trilogy end.

This book is the final one of the series and it is just as good as the others. I loved getting back into these characters. They have such strong and complex stories that it is always interesting to read about them.
Although I didn’t want the series to end I was glad to see how it all played out. It really feels like you have been on a journey with these 3 characters and it was nice to see that journey come to a conclusion. This book is every bit as enjoyable as I expected and this is a series that everyone should try!

This book was so incredible! It brought out so many emotions and that’s what I love in a book. If you can make me upset, if you can bring tears to my eyes, if you can make me laugh out loud, if you can make my heart melt…then it’s a fantastic read in my opinion. I want to feel it all and that’s what True Colors did for me. Lance, Imani and Melody are truly a great trio. They’ve always been the best of friends. And this book did an amazing job with showing how friendships should really be like. Be there for one another no matter what and always be truthful! No matter how bad or embarrassing the truth is, they always spoke about it to one another. And at the end of the day, they always forgave one another. I can’t wait to read the other books!
