The Scottish Play (Polyam Fam Series) by Phoebe Alexander – Review by Santana Hicks

The Scottish Play (PolyAm Fam Book 1)The Scottish Play by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Molly has to stage a play she wrote for her final project for grad school. She wrote a play where the main character is a rugged Scottish man. When all of the people who auditioned didn’t suit the part, Poe, Molly’s girlfriend, suggested Lachlan since he was a handsome Scotsman working in the school. Poe convinces Lachlan to go hear Molly out. He agrees to help her out with the play but has little experience in acting. Lachlan is instantly interested in Molly’s look. She’s bright, colourful, and curvy. When he finds out she has a girlfriend, he is disappointed and tries to be good.

Molly is a bi woman in a polyamorous relationship. Although she has not been with a man since highschool, she can’t help but feel attracted to Lachlan. At first, Molly tries her hardest to maintain a director-actor relationship, but the tension is strong between them plus her polycule keep cheering her on to go for it.

After she gives into her feelings, sparks fly. The couple work well together. Although Molly had some trepidations about being with a man again, he exceeded her expectations in more ways than one.

I loved Molly as a character. She is sweet and her childhood/teenhood actually resembles mine a lot which made me feel connected to her as a person. I have always been on the curvy side while my best friends were skinny. I was bypassed by some boys because of this. I also cannot be myself with a lot of my family members. I found myself rooting for Molly.

To be honest, I didn’t really like Poe that much. It seemed like she wanted a polyamorous relationship that mostly benefited her. When Molly started opening up about her time spent with others, it was like Poe was constantly trying to one up her or something. Then again, it could just be their dynamic. To each its own.

The Scottish Play (PolyAm Fam Book 1)The Scottish Play by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An enjoyable and engaging romantic comedy which kept me happily turning the pages. Molly Rose is completing her final grad school project; having written a play she now has to stage it. Her girlfriend Poe has found the perfect looking man for the kilt-wearing Scotsman role but unfortunately, he cannot act. The ruggedly handsome Lachlan is not sure how he’s ended up helping Molly but apparently, he has the perfect accent. Although Molly is happy with Poe they are in a polyamorous relationship, and she can’t help but feel an attraction towards Lachlan. Despite not having dated a man since high school Molly is keeping an open mind as her and Lachlan have a real connection. They all believe that once the play is over their fling will be too, but they are all keeping an open mind. I love the characters in this story, Molly, Poe and Lachlan are all likeable and relatable. The chemistry sizzled off the page and led to some steamy scenes. I loved the fact that the storyline centres on a polyamorous relationship, and I love the idea of this series chronicling a polycule’s romantic adventures.

The Scottish Play (PolyAm Fam Book 1)The Scottish Play by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book in the Polyam Fam. It is a romcom which deals with relationships, family, angst and learning experiences. I really enjoyed this story and I have loved the authors previous works so I was excited to read this and I wasn’t disappointed.
This story has a polyamorous relationship which our leading Lady Molly is in. I didn’t have much of a understanding of this type of a relationship however the story has helped my understanding more. This is a story of finding romance when you don’t expect it but also learning about different types of relationships and learning to accept people for who they are.
This is Molly and Lachlan’s story

Molly is in a polyamorous relationship with Poe. Since being in a relationship she has never wanted to date someone else until Lachlan came along.
Lachlan was introduced to Molly as she needed a Scottish man for her play. The connection and attraction between them was instant but Lachlan doesn’t date and Molly isn’t sure how she feels about dating someone other than Poe.
The more time they spend together though the more they can’t fight their attraction to each other but will Lachlan understand and accept the relationship that Molly currently has? Will Lachlan be able to be in a relationship with Molly knowing she is also in a relationship with Poe? Will this just be a fling while the show is happening or will it become something more?

This book is full of twists and turns as our characters battle with their feelings and emotions while they find out what they really want and how they can get there.
This is definitely a story of acceptance which I loved and I found it interesting. I can’t wait to read more in this series

The Scottish Play (PolyAm Fam Book 1)The Scottish Play by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Phoebe Alexander’s The Scottish Play follows Molly, a bisexual polyamorous playwright, and Lachlan, the Scottish guy that Molly’s girlfriend finds to play the lead in Molly’s play. During their time together, Molly and Lachlan fall for each other, Lachlan learns more about polyamory, and both of them have to face their fears. Firstly, polyamorous romance is such an interesting concept and I think really important representation. However, I felt like the way it was portrayed – as well as bisexuality – was often inaccurate or bordering on fetishisation. It’s really well written, with strong characterisation, and detailed and interesting backstories, but at times I felt the dialogue during the intimate scenes made me cringe, and sometimes it seemed to focus more on smut than plot. I did love the way the polyamorous grand romantic gesture/happily ever after was written, though. I recommend this book because I do think it’s important representation and I admire Phoebe for writing this. I didn’t love this story but I did enjoy the writing, so I would love to read more of Phoebe’s work or this series in future. ‘She was as radiant as the sun. I shouldn’t have been surprised by her gravitational pull when I was just a fading moon.’

I believe this is the first story that I have read that had poly romance. I liked how it was different from the usual romance story. A love triangle with a different kind of ending. There was more to the story besides the romance though. It made for an interesting book. Despite the poly love not being for everyone, you will find yourself relating to the characters anyway. They still have their flaws like every other person.

At its core I really feel this book is about finding love and acceptance to be exactly who you are and living the life you want to live. Who doesn’t want that right? My favourite characters were definitely Lachlan and Molly, who were wonderful characters that I enjoyed getting to know all while learning a little bit about Polycules which was a new term for me. Proving “families” come in all forms this was a good read.

The Scottish Play (PolyAm Fam Book 1)The Scottish Play by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Scottish Play is the first book I’ve read by Phoebe Alexander, and the first book I’ve ever read with a polycule (and, I’ll admit, I had to look it up!). There were actually a few terms that I paused my reading to look up, which sometimes I find annoying, but in this instance, I found to be very informative and contributed greatly to the story.
I am a huge lover of rom-com style stories, and while this book this didn’t necessarily fully hit the comedic aspect of my favorite genre, it did hit on all of the heartwarming feels I look for in a story, and I loved seeing the changes in each of the main characters. Both Molly and Lachlan were complex characters (with some grit and determination behind them) who showed character growth and development, alongside their sidekick friends (though I will say Molly’s main squeeze was not my favorite). I think a lot of people will relate to both Molly and Lachlan’s internal struggles with their families (feeling looked down upon for their size, likes/dislikes, etc.) and the ending was definitely worth a smile. Good story!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a fun loving entertaining read. This isn’t a genre I would normally read but I am glad I took a chance on it. There were some terms I didn’t know in this book but as I read on everything was explained very tastefully. This story was about family, love, relationships, friendship, great characters and so much more. Molly and her polycule were happy and when she met Lacklan she couldn’t help but feel the attraction. Molly had bad experiences in the past when she dated men so since then she has dated women. Lachlan isn’t looking for a relationship but can’t help but feel the attraction he has toward Molly. This is a must read if you want to know how this story turns out for these two and for the rest of The polycule. I can’t wait to read what the author has in store for us next.

The Scottish Play (Polyam Fam Series) by Phoebe Alexander. I loved this book. I love this author so I wasn’t surprised. Its the story of Molly Rose who is living with her girlfriend, Poe, and has written a play for her grad project she is to put a production of this play on. When Poe finds the perfect guy to play the Scotsman she is excited. Only problem is he doesn’t know anything about acting. He looks the part, he is super excited and he likes Molly Rose. Molly Rose has had a bad experience with men but she thinks Lachlan is so handsome and his accent is to die for. Lachlan is the maintenance man in Molly & Poe’s building. When they teach him about the Polycule life he thinks it will work while the play in ongoing and be done when the play is. The only problem is he might be catching feelings for Molly Rose. Read this fun poly romance to find out!

The Scottish Play is the first book in a new series, Polyam Fam, by Phoebe Alexander. This book is contemporary romance- a romcom with plenty of fun, spice, a poly relationship, adventure, angst, drama, emotion, surprises, friendship, family, connections, mystery, and more.
The characters were really well-developed individuals who continued to develop and grow over the course of the story. They were interesting and likeable, and their dynamics were fun and really added an extra element of interest to the whole story.
If you aren’t familiar with poly relationships, and not sure if that is something you would be interested in, don’t let that element put you off reading this really great story. If you go into it with an open mind you will be surprised by what you find, and there is so much more to the story than the ‘poly’ and erotic elements. There is definitely depth and substance here.
This is really well written story, and again, Ms. Alexander has produced an enticing, entertaining and poly-positive story that drew me in right from the beginning. Another great read from this talented author!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Phoebe Alexander!

The Scottish Play is the 1st Book in the new PolyAm Fam series and I LOVED this book so much. I am a huge fan of this author and I was eagerly anticipating to read this story and I cannot say enough of how much I really enjoyed this book. Giving me the feels of a sense of love, family, drama, angst with sugar and spice….I devoured every page and have no regrets. The overall relationships between the characters and how it developed throughout the storyline makes me want to be part of world.

Who wouldn’t love a true Scotsman in a kilt help with a play that is for your graduate degree? Molly being in a predicament needed the perfect person to play the part and help her get her final project done and wow the professors. When Molly’s girlfriend, Poe, approaches Lachlan Adair to see if he would be game to help out….Lachlan does not know how to act…but taking a look at Molly at first sight…he was in. Sparks fly between Lachlan and Molly..knowing that Molly though already has her love of her life, Poe. When things heat up, feelings are mutual….with the support of the polycule that Molly is part of….Molly needs to find the courage to feel free and open on whom she loves…even if it more than one person…

Will Molly’s play become a success in the end after it is all said and done….with Poe and Lachlan both whom love Molly…

Definitely read and find out…you will not be disappointed. I loved this spin on love and for me just perfectly done. Love is Love….always

The Scottish Play (Polyam Fam Series) by Phoebe Alexander

The Scottish Play is the first book in the Polyam Fam Series and is a wonderfully written Romantic Comedy. I loved everything about this book from the characters that are fully developed, relatable and complex. Her style of writing is what I love most about her. Her attention to detail along with her creative characters make the story come to life. I’ve read several books by this author and honestly this is my favorite yet. Lachlan and Molly, she doesn’t date men and for her grad school project is to stage her play she wrote. Lachlan doesn’t date period but sure has a sexy accent. He’s not the best actor but whew should that really matter? I think not. These two have some serious chemistry between them. What will happen onve the play is complete? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I’m already looking forward to the next book in this series.

This was my first PolyAm Fam book and I am so glad that I gave it a chance! I really enjoyed the story and characters. It was witty and adorable, but also tense and informative. In this book Molly lives with a polycule and is completing her grad school thesis project. A play she wrote is to be cast and shown for a weekend, for her to pass and graduate the program. Thankfully her girlfriend finds that PERFECT guy for her leading male role! Lachlan is even a Scotsman!! Which is perfect since the man in her play is a kilt-wearing Scot! Talk about luck right? Wrong. Unfortunately, even though he looks and sounds the part, he knows absolutely NOTHING about acting and being in a play. Molly is determined to make it work. Lachlan gets roped into helping which he doesn’t mind one bit. He thinks that Molly is cute, curvy, smart, and it doesn’t hurt that she likes his sexy scot accent. Molly starts giving him lessons, but she worries about their attraction to one another. Her polycule pushes her to find out what’s there, but she’s had a line of bad luck when it comes to dating males. Lachlan finds her whole arrangement very odd. Molly has a girlfriend after all. How can he date someone who is already taken, especially because he doesn’t normally date. Maybe a fling is both what they need. After the play they can do their separate ways right. But what about Molly’s girlfriend? Will she be okay with any of this?? Read the book to follow this funny, cute, sassy story!! You will fall in love with the characters and their world. I loved getting a glimpse into a polycule and learning more about their family. If that is the reason you are on the fence about this book, I have to tell you to just give it a chance!! It was a wonderful book!

“Molly doesn’t date men.
Lachlan doesn’t date period.
So can they stick to the script?
Molly Rose’s final grad school project is to stage the play she wrote. How on earth did her girlfriend find the absolute perfect cast for the kilt-wearing Scotsman role? Well, he looks the part, but he knows nothing about acting. It hasn’t escaped anyone’s notice that Lachlan Adair is ruggedly handsome. Molly’s polycule insists she keep an open mind, but she hasn’t dated a man since a series of disastrous attempts in high school, and she certainly doesn’t intend to start now. Lachlan doesn’t know how he got roped into helping out with this MFA student’s thesis project, but she’s so curvy and cute. And she seems to like his accent. Apparently she has a girlfriend and lives in a house full of other freaky folks. No big deal. When the play is over, their fling will be too. Right?” Do they fall in love? Will have to read the book to find out.
Great funny characters, bit of spice with suspense and comedy. I suggest readers 18+ and older. Lots of spice. The book was entertaining, gripping, and a quick read. I give this book 4 stars.

The Scottish Play (PolyAm Fam Book 1)The Scottish Play by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a beautifully written book about not only finding family that will accept you but new experiences. Take Lachlan “Lanny” for example. He not only got to act in his first play but he learned all about polycules and what it means to be poly. I have to admit the polycule was a new term for me.

Molly is a playwright. She is attempting to earn her MFA, all she has to do is have a successful play. She needs the perfect leading man. She hasn’t found him yet until her girlfriend, Poe, suggests someone new. Poe pushes the maintenance guy working in her building to audition for Molly’s play. He is perfect. He even has no problem with the accent.

Lachlan is surprised when someone approaches him about helping out with a play. Lachlan figures they need a set built or something, since that is what he does. When he gets there, it turns out that the director, a beautiful curvy woman he has an immediate attraction to, is looking for a leading actor that can pull off a Scottish accent. Luckily for Lachlan, the accent is built in since he is Scottish! Willing to give it a chance, Lachlan says yes.

As Molly and Lachlan spend more time together turning him into an actor, the more their mutual attraction builds. This leads to problems for Molly because she has not dated a man in nearly a decade. Also, Molly is dating Poe and although they have an open relationship, Molly has not been with anyone else since starting to date Poe. Molly fights the internal battles of the attraction to Lachlan and her fears that Poe is pulling away. This is Lachlan’s first experience with polyamory. He has to adjust.

Adding to the drama is Molly’s sister’s wedding. Molly’s family is devout Evangelical Christian and does not approve of her lifestyle or so she thinks. Molly wants to take Poe to the wedding as her date but doesn’t want to upset her pastor father, who holds the purse strings to her trust fund that is paying for her education.

As the tensions boil, Molly, Poe, and Lachlan all have to confront their feelings for each other and learn how to navigate the situation. The way the polycule supports Molly and Poe is a wonderful thing. Cynda’s insight is instrumental in helping build bridges. If nothing else, this story proves that love is not always one dimensional. You can love different people at the same time, equally but differently. This wonderful story also taught me some new vocabulary.

Polyamory and open relationships may not be your bag, however, understanding the dynamics allows one to gain knowledge regarding the lifestyle. Wonderfully written.

I enjoy her writing style as well as her attention to details that make her stories feel realistic. This book is no different. This is a well written romance story that has a twist of humor with characters that are full of heart. What will happen when Lachlan and Molly work on a project together. One doesn’t date and the other has an accent but their chemistry is off the chart. I enjoyed watching their growth and what they added to the story made it easy to read. They are connectable and have great attraction. This is a fast paced, engaging and hard to put down story that you don’t want to miss. I really enjoyed this story and the laughs that come with it. Damn who doesn’t like a man in a kilt. And a Scottish accent is even better when the two are combined.
Phoebe Alexander is well known for writing books where the relationship is outside what is considered the norm and this one is no different. She writes beautiful realistic sex-positive stories really well. The Scottish Play is a polycule Rom Com and the first book in the PolyAm Fam series.
I love Phoebe’s writing and her wonderful characters that feel like part of the family that are a close and would do anything for each other. Phoebe draws you in with seduction and love and the unknown.
If you have never read anything but vanilla relationships before give this a go because it is well written, and love is love. You never know you just may love it.

This is such a good story that involves great characters. A realistic group of friends whose dynamic is not what society deems as normal, but at the same time works for them. Being in a polyamorous relationship is not for everyone. Lachlan learns that relationships are different for different people and that’s ok. Molly just loves who she loves. She understands that everyone is different and has different needs and that’s ok. Sometimes love changes the way you see things.

This is not your average he/she romance. This story is about being accepted for being you. Loving who you want to love. Just generally trying to be happy. Some people in life can say they don’t care what others think but we all want to be loved and accepted. He, she, they, them…we. Love is love and this story shows that.

I like what this group of friends mean to each other. Safety, love, acceptance, home. I love the storyline of how Molly and Lachlan meet, and how their relationship develops. This is a great start to a new series, and I am looking forward to the next story.

I learned a lot in this story through Sarah’s and her best friend, Rachael’s relationships. I knew right away that I wanted to root for Sarah and James, but there were a few times that I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I can’t wait to see how their story continues in the next book.

Mountains Wanted (Mountains Series Book 1) by Phoebe Alexander

This isn’t the first book by Alexander I’ve read. This new series is great and I loved every minute of it. Mountains Wanted is the first book in the Mountain Series.

Sarah is a single mom to two wonderful kids. Meeting James at a sub place she couldn’t keep him off her mind. When she meets him again a few days later things change. The quote I chose for Sarah is: “With all due respect, let’s say your life is on the line in the heat of battle. Would you rather have a gay soldier who is one hundred percent focused and loyal to his fellow soldiers by your side, or a straight soldier whose mind is nowhere near the battlefield? The truth of the matter is people have the ability to be professional and put their recreational and sexual desires aside when needed. This ability has absolutely nothing to do with sexual orientation. It has everything to do with integrity and work ethic.”

James is home for good. He’s teaching ROTC and encourages his students to attend Sarah’s lecture. When he meets her one on one he can’t keep her off his mind. The quote I chose for James is: “Being deployed in a war zone, it’s obviously not like everyday life. In order for the men to stay focused, accomplish their missions and stay alive, it requires—more than anything else—mental discipline. If an individual loses focus and doesn’t see something they ought to have seen, it may not only get them injured but the person next to them as well. It’s imperative to keep distractions to a minimum. It’s focus and discipline that make the difference between frightened boys and professional soldiers who get the job done. That’s also why drinking and sex are discouraged while deployed.”

Highly recommended for Contemporary Romance lovers.

I am quite familiar with this author and her work, so I knew what to expect. And it was HOT! And steamy. Then again, that’s her style of writing. She is extremely thorough and detailed in her writing and that includes her sex scenes as well. Not that I mind at all. As with all her books, they are very quick reads for me because once I pick them up I don’t want to put them down. This one ended in a cliffhanger so I know that she will continue where she left off. I am just not sure what will happen. I can’t wait to find out.

Mountains Wanted (Mountains Series #1) by Phoebe Alexander – Review by Tracy Jenks

Mountains Wanted (Mountains #1)Mountains Wanted by Phoebe Alexander
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was not prepared for the amount of steam in this contemporary romance, but I’m not saying that’s a bad thing! 😉 There were definitely some pearl-clutching scenes.
Sarah is a professor of sociology and James is in the Army. They meet and have an instant connection and when they are together intimately, they both feel like it feels so normal and that it’s just right.
Sarah is polyamorous, which was a lifestyle that was new to me to read about. She loves sex and isn’t ashamed to admit it. She’s not looking for a relationship, just a friend with benefits.
James is accepting of Sarah’s lifestyle, and even explores things himself. He agrees to a friends with benefits arrangement, but when no clear rules were set, things become murky.
Sarah wasn’t supposed to fall in love but realizes that she has done just that. She finds herself having a hard time knowing that James has also found himself in love with another person, despite his and Sarah’s FWB arrangement.
With an impending deployment, there are some tough decisions that need to be made. Will James choose Maggie, the high school sweetheart with whom he recently reconnected back home? Or will he choose Sarah, the woman he’s grown to love over several months?
