This book was great! I loved the interactions of Humans and Jinn and the pure magic in this book. I loved that the main character was a young adult and a boy’s point of view. If you love young adult, magic, and mystery with a great story line, this book is great for all ages.

Liam is sixteen and everyone and everything seems to mess with him. He’s like a magnet. I’ve been unlucky and I’ve had bad things happen but Liam is more likely to have them happen than not! It’s almost tragic reading the first part of this story until Kenna saves Liam’s life and things start to change. Imaginative and unlike any other story I have read, I enjoyed this book very much!

This is a fun, clean YA read that I would recommend to any 8th grader and up.
The author pulls you in right away with her very likable, relatable characters, and the imaginative world of the Jinn realm. You are drawn into the life of Liam and his uncanny ability to constantly get hurt. She keeps you reading to find out why everything is happening. The unexpected twists surprise you too! Who can he trust? Who is telling him the truth?
I truly hope that she writes more about this world and continues the story of Liam and Kenna!

This fantasy read is different than any I’ve read before! I really love how the author describes everything in detail so its like being there. Liam endures so much in this story and still keeps a good heart.There were so many twist and turns that I was not expecting that kept me wanting to read more. I definitely recommend Granted to anyone that’s looking for a good fantasy read!

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn takes us into the life of Liam. Liam’s life is just one incident of being bullied after another. And if that isn’t enough, if he isn’t being bullied, then he has the worst luck. Liam believes his life will always be this way and that he cannot do anything to escape his bad luck and torment. Until, one day, he discovers the Jinn. He then goes on an adventure that turns his life upside down and changes everything he thought he knew about himself. I enjoyed reading this fun adventure.

This was a fun and magical young adult book. I really enjoyed that the main character was a boy and a shy boy that doesn’t fit in. The authors portrayal of the character and the world around him really creates the scene.
Liam is a 16 year old boy. He has a special gift. He can see colours around people but only when they are up to no good. As much as he tries to stay away from trouble it always seems to be attracted to him.
Through this story he has his life saved by an unlikely person, he makes an enemy and finds a strange shell on a school field trip. What the shell is and what it means is one mystery that gets unravelled and leads Liam into some dangerous situations.

Liam Covington is a typical teenager, he goes to high school and has a close friend group, but as hard as he tries to keep a low profile while he is there, the other kids are always messing with him, bullying him and generally making his life awkward, but what they don’t know is that he can see colours all around him, not just normal colours, they are attached to people and they get brighter when he is going to be messed around with, but even if he did tell someone, they wouldn’t believe him anyway.
As usual his day starts with someone pushing him over on the way to school, but today, he is going on the school field trip to the desert and he is hoping that it won’t get much worse, however, when he gets on the bus, he can see the colours everywhere and tries to mind his own business. When they get there and the ranger starts talking about the desert, it’s geological features and the life which teams within it, all the kids are just waiting until they can go and play on the dunes, but Liam is enjoying the tour and talk just as much, he is also reminiscing about the family holiday he used to have as well. He crests one of the sand dunes and breathes in the air, thoroughly enjoying himself until he is drawn to a midnight blue colour smoke which is making patterns in the sand below him, this is when danger strikes and he steps into a sinkhole just as a dust devil appears and mixes in with the smoke and swirls towards him but he cannot move or- avoid the sand swirling around him, he tries to dig into the sand and find some kind of purchase to get away from it all. The next thing he knows is Kenna, a girl he has been trying to avoid comes to his rescue, pulls him out of the sand and offers him some water, his head hurts and he feels exhausted and gritty, but still he picks up the unusual shell and walks back to the bus with his friend supporting him.
Things start to go from bad to worse when his brother and mother find out what happened and are mad at him for not telling them as soon as he saw them, but it gets worse when the colours start getting brighter and start to appear in people’s eyes, not to mention the school gossip which is making his life worse, especially when it comes to Kenna, someone who he swore not to talk to again after their families had a disagreement years ago. Meanwhile, he begins to see what he thinks are hallucinations and the shell he picked up in the desert is either burning hot or covered in the blue designs he can see in his hallucinations, but what happens next shocks him into realising that maybe his hallucinations are real and that they may be able to give him some answers as to why he sees the colours and nobody else does. This is a fantasy adventure which will have you speeding along with Liam while he tries to work out the mystery of why he experiences what he does, while trying to live a life as normally as he can.

I was excited to read this as in the description it stated that fans of Artemis Fowl would enjoy it. When I was younger, I loved Artemis Fowl, in fact, I still have the books so having the chance to find something that was just as gold as that made me super duper happy. I’ve got to say that Huffmire has really written something brilliant here that I think both young people and adults will enjoy. It is fun, it is magical, and it has some wonderful characters.
Liam is one of these wonderful characters and he has a simple code that he lives by; keep a very low profile – head down and don’t draw attention to yourself – stay away from the colours, the bright and blinding colours, and absolutely don’t make contact with Kenna Berlin. This code happens to be in answer to some very weird and wonderful things that happen to Liam, like for example, seeing colourful shadows that no one else can.
Of course, this story wouldn’t be a story if Liam’s code didn’t get a little blurred around the edges, and it does, it really does. One day changes it all, Kenna becomes impossible to ignore, keeping his head down becomes difficult with the most popular guy at school out to get him, and a shell that he happened to find is making the colours way brighter.
I got to say that I loved reading this and Huffmire really did capture all the elements I thought were brilliant in Artemis Fowl. Huffmire is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her work, she really brings magic into her work.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire was a really good read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, and it was a tale unlike any I’ve read before. I won’t lie though. It took me several chapters before I fully became enthralled in this novel. I was pretty confused at the beginning, what with the colors and the random events that happened (not so random in the long scheme of things) and it felt like it wasn’t really explained well. But it did all get explained later. I enjoyed this novel a lot more than I expected to, which was pretty surprising considering I didn’t like it very much at the beginning. This was a very interesting read and I can’t wait to read more from the author in the future!

YA Fantasy
I love the YA genre. It is like there are few rules for the writer to follow. This gives the author creative freedom. The plot-line really moved along. I was drawn into the story from the first page until the last page. The characters are fun and unique. This story is about Liam. Liam is special because he can see colors. The colors are present when people and or things are messing with him. He has gotten himself in a little bit of trouble with a jock who is now his enemy. Kenna has helped Liam but is there more. What are the colors telling him? I highly recommend reading this book to find out about Liam, the colors, the enemy, and Kenna.

It is a very short coming of age tale where a 16 year old Liam has always had bad luck and is bullied etc and thinks he is cursed but he can also see when trouble is a foot. When he gets three wishes what will he choose? Fantasy meets folklore and myths in this magical tale that will be enjoyed by young and old alike.

So, this was a great young adult read and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it. For me, the best part of this book was that it featured a male as the main character because there are so few books out there now that do. I loved how the story incorporated a single-parent home life, teenage romance, magic, and mystery all together to create such a relatable book. I fell in love with the story immediately and didn’t want it to end. In fact, I am hoping that there is a follow-up to this story because I could certainly see this having several sequels to it. I felt that the author pulled me into the story as I was reading because her writing skills were so keen and informative. This was the first book I have read by this author but I’m going to check out more of her work from the library because if all her books are as good as this one then I’m going to become addicted. If you have a young adult male reader in your household or know someone that does, this will make for a great read for them.

This young adult fantasy novel was great. It was my first book by this author and it didn’t disappoint. I didn’t want put it down amd I was sucked in from the very first Page. I was excited to see where the story was headed and I can’t wait to read more by this author in the future!

Omg this was such a fun and magical read! I have read Rachel Huffmire before and fallen in love with her mind and how she takes the fairy tales we grew up with and turns them into these worlds I love and never want to leave. I have gotten my daughter a bit hooked on her as well and I am so excited to tell her there is a new one from her with a completely new twist we don’t get enough of, jinn, or genies! Don’t instantly think of Aladdin either, this is a magic that is woven and deep with nods to the Arabic folklore that never gets fully explored. I was so in love with how magical this read felt and how it took me to a world I didn’t want to come out of at the end. I sure hope that we get more in the future among the same Arabic folklore from Huffmire again.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire is a wonderfully original start to a new YA fantasy series. With magic, Jinn/genies, the paranormal, teen struggles, obstacles, friendship, quirky characters, and more- this story made for a fun read.
Liam is thrust into a situation/adventure he never could have predicted. When strange things begin to happen, Liam’s life ifs about to change. Genies, magic, and even a little romance were cleverly woven into a great little read.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire is a brilliant YA book that is full of twists and turns the whole way through. I thought this book was an exciting read and I was drawn into it instantly. Part of the reason for this I think is because this is the first time I have read a book of this genre told from a male POV. This was a refreshing change and really made it feel like an overall better story.
I really found the characters engaging and so easy to connect with. The journey was not only exciting to read about but easy to imagine. This was a great book and one that I throughly enjoyed.

What are these colors? They are Jinn! Things go from bad to worse when he happens to make enemies with the school jock. This is a wonderful young adult book. As a mother of a couple preteens I appreciate that the main character is a boy. It’s a refreshing change and I know my son would enjoy reading this book some day. It is exciting to see a more in-depth story about the magic of Jinns, aka genies.
Liam, the sixteen year old main character sees colors around people whenever they are about to do something bad. He learned early on that this wasn’t normal. So he tries his best to stay away from these colorful smoke or mists around his classmates. But Liam seems to attract trouble pretty much anywhere. When he gets hurt on a school field trip, things start to really get dangerous. What will Liam learn through this experience? I’ll let you find out.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Holy Wow this author has gone and done it again. She has quickly become one of my one-click authors and Granted is my favorite yet. Tbis ia a young adult story that pulled me in from the very beginning and I found myself lost in the pages. I couldn’t put it down and finished in one sitting. This is a wonderfully written story about a sixteen year old named Liam. He sees colors when people mess with him. The colors start to stand out when stuff starts happening for him. When someone saves his life and he brings home a shell and along the way makes an enemy. What do these things have in common? Do the effect his colors? There’s just the right amount of twists a d turns that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out happens next?. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

When the Jinn appears and offers him 3 wishes what will he do? He has a great crush on a girl but he knows not to get around her because he’s afraid of what will happen. He feel totally alone because he is being raised by his mom only and he doesn’t want to worry her. What will happen to Liam? Read this fun coming of age story to find out!

I enjoyed this young adult book. This is a well developed story that any young adult would enjoy reading. The characters are relatable and made the story fun and entertaining. This is a story about Liam. He is a sixteen year old that sees colors when people mess with him. Things are happening for him that are making his colors stand out. He has his life saved, makes an enemy and a shell he brings home, what do these have to do with his colors? I highly recommend reading this book to find out. Rachel Huffmire grew up surrounded by wheat fields and gardens. Her mother paid her a dollar per classic novel she read, so in a quest to amass a small fortune Rachel finished over 200 classics in elementary school, including Don Quixote and Wuthering Heights. In college, she ran to the BYU bookstore for her first job. Behind the register, she watched local authors hold book signings and began dreaming up plots of her own.

Shattered Snow (The Mirror Chronicles Book 1) by Rachel Huffmire is a retelling of the classic Snow White. I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down once I started reading. I found myself lost in the pages. This authors style of writing will hook you from the beginning and doesn’t let go till the end. Her characters are fun and easily relate. This is a fantasy/ time travel. In this version we have Keltson aka the mirror. He uses his looking glass to save people he thinks needs happier endings. But what will happen when he sees Margaretha biting into a poisonous apple? What sill happen with history ? Can he change people’s fate? Find out what happens next in this must read. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

Shattered Snow by Rachel Huffmire is the first book in the Mirror Chronicles series and it was an incredible read! This was a very interesting take on the classic fairy tale of Snow White, with an added historical time travel twist that made for a very intriguing novel. Once I started reading I didn’t want to put this book down, it was that good! The characters are amazing, and super complex. The storyline was great, but can also get a little confusing due to the time travel involved throughout the story. I completely fell in love with this book and I can’t wait to read the second installment! This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I hope to read more in the future. I highly recommend this one!

This story takes the traditional fairytale and turns it into a new and fresh remix. The time travel and the spin on an old classic makes everything fun again. Lilia, living a hard life in Russia, finds a way to travel back in time to make a difference in a girl’s life. It is a risky thing to travel back but Lilia knows this is her only chance to change her life and also make a difference in a young girl’s life.
I’m glad I picked up this book and took the time to read it. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’ll be looking for future books. I enjoyed her writing and how she approached this story. As a mother of a preteen, I really appreciated that this was written for the younger age group and for all readers to enjoy.

The first book I’ve read by Huffmire and the first book in The Mirror Chronicles. It’s a wonderful book and I can’t wait for the next one. I absolutely loved it.
Lilia, someone who wants a new life, goes through a mirror with the help of someone else. She is expecting a lot, but will she get it. The quote I chose for Lilia is: “Yes. A traveler and a student of cultures.”
Keltson can go back in time. Something not a lot of people can do. The quote I chose for Keltson is: “I don’t like any of that information.”
I highly recommend this for historical sci-fi readers.

This story begins with Keltson Grammer, he is preparing for another day at work and getting his music playlist ready to play through his earphones, he is heading to walk past the fuel pumps on his way home via a to jump to the Palais Garnier in Paris where he collects some items he will be needing to give to one of his clients.
When he gets back home, he has the surprise of finding his brother Baigh waiting for him with a case of Vibe energy drinks, he finds that he is off his tag and although still on parole, he hasn’t got his license back, but that isn’t the worst thing in the world. He is sad that he can’t spend more time with Baigh, but he has work in 15 minutes and can’t talk, so Baigh says he will see him tomorrow and collect the case of Vibe then, so Keltson headed down to his workshop in the cellar.
Next we meet Lilia Vaschenko, a Russian mechanic who works at a local scrapyard who after finishing her shift, comes home to shower off the grease, grime and scent of the junkyard, only to find a stark white envelope waiting for her on her home work surface, which contrasted completely with the wires, components and scrap metal which she was used to working with. In the envelope she finds a time, a phone number and an instruction to be ready for immediate departure, she realises that the application she put in for has been accepted.
This is where Lilia meets The Mirror who is going to change her life, she is about to embark on a journey into the past to save a child named Margareta Von Waldeck from her fate and hopefully not change the present and the future too much in the process, but will this all work out, or will a huntsman be sent to scupper their plans?
This retelling of snow white is done in a fantastic way with twists and turns all the way through, which leave you wanting to know what happens next and see what happens to the characters next.

I was hooked from page one by Rachel Huffmire’s Young Adult novel ‘Shattered Snow’, it is a retelling of the fairy story Snow White but it has a science fiction twist to it. The author has based her novel on the real life story of Margaretha von Waldeck, a sixteenth-century countess who is thought to have inspired the Grimm brothers’ original fairy tale. “Time travel may be illegal, but The Mirror doesn’t mind breaking a few laws”. In 1537 a young countess, Margaretha is destined to be poisoned when she reaches twenty-one but when she discovers a mysterious mirror in the woods her future shatters and her world is turned into ice and shadows. In the future, 2069, time-travel is restricted to observation and research only however, Keltson Grammar runs an “underground empire that rescues unfortunate souls throughout history”, Known only as “The Mirror”. Keltson knows that a single mistake could send an “entire agency to reinstate his clients to their original dismal fates”. Meanwhile Russian mechanic, Lilia Vaschenko will do anything to escape the cinderblock towers, unclimbable ladders and the glass ceiling that surrounds her, even work for the world’s most wanted renegade.
‘Shattered Snow’ is an engaging and enjoyable read with a original and unique storyline and it is a completely different version of the well known ‘Snow White’ fairytale. The authors wonderful narrative and world building really brings both the time periods, the setting and the well defined characters to life with her detailed descriptions. I loved the time travelling elements to this story and I liked the main characters who were realistic and relatable and who each added to the story in their own ways. I found it was a fast paced storyline which flowed well and the plot was unpredictable and kept me gripped throughout. The story and the characters stayed with me long after I had finished reading and I look forward to the second book in ‘The Mirror Chronicles’ series.

Shattered Snow by Rachel Huffmire is the first book in The Mirror Chronicles series. I always enjoy reading an author’s new take on a classic story but this was far above what I expected. This is a new imagining of Snow White which includes the poisoned apple, huntsman, and other known characters but stirs it up with time travel with historical references. I really enjoyed the characters and how this was a well-blended mix of different genres. I can see all ages from teen to adult enjoying this book. Also, it tones down the romance to allow other elements of the story to come forward. What a wonderful start to a series. I look forward to reading more from this author soon.
