The Crown of Stones: Magic-Price by C. L. Schneider – Review by Maura Harper

Magic-Price (The Crown of Stones, #1)Magic-Price by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MAGIC-PRICE is Book 1 in “THE CROWN OF STONES” series and is an epic fantasy. It is one of those tales that has a moral built into the story and it could actually be applied to some of events in currently present in the world. Good vs Evil – Action vs Reaction – Life vs Death.

Addiction [əˈdikSH(ə)n] NOUN: the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. One wouldn’t think addiction to magic could be real, but clearly the main protagonist is addicted to his gift. The compulsive transfer from one addiction to another without treating the underlying cause is the theme to this book.

There are many characters that we are introduced to. This is a story that is told from the MCs POV and each character he introduces us to is explained so as to prevent any confusion. The story seems well plotted and has a very strong beginning, middle and end. It’s a story that keeps the reader engaged by moving from one situation to another in a well defined time frame, always moving the story forward.

This is not a story I read in one sitting. It is a little different from the books I normally pick up and I’m glad I had an opportunity to read this one.

I look forward to the next installments of this epic trilogy.

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Price by C. L. Schneider was a fantastical read. I would give this book a five out of five stars. The world building was beyond what I expected. I felt drawn in and it reminded me of some of my favorite fantasy stories. I felt empathetic to Ian’s struggles and was glad to see some development as the story progresses. I cannot wait to read the next book, I am sure it’ll be another great experience.

Magic-Price (The Crown of Stones, #1)Magic-Price by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I should probably start off with the disclaimer that I normally shy away from these books. Likely it is for me to simply not read a book with so much sci-fi infliction on the blurb and cover. However, I have read other novels by CL Schneider (her Nite Fire series) and I thoroughly enjoyed each of the books by her. I decided to stop being so dismissive and give these novels that belong to the The Crown of Stones series a chance. I am happy that I did.

Schneider has a huge knack for writing a vivid and realistic scene with thoughts and elements that you would not ever expect to be realistic. I often feel as if I have hopped into her books and The Crown of Stones: Magic-Price, was no different. The characters are full of life and so fun to follow, often relatable. I love the thought and attention to detail that is super evident throughout. These books are so much more than the sci-fi drama I could ever label it as. I feel as if you get a bit of everything in these stories.

In this book we find Ian a man that has been living in literal fear for his life and freedom. He is terrified to use his magic and that makes life extremely complicated for him. When new threats are brought forth he is forced to figure out how to use his magic and find his balance. I loved the adventure Ian went on and I am so looking forward to seeing what will happen next in book two!

I have gotten lost in this world and didn’t want to re-emerge. The continued tale of Ian Troy was jam packed with imagery and detail, good vs evil, an amazing fantasy world. Schneider has done an incredible job with this series. I’ve loved every page and can’t wait to read more from this author.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars is the second book in The Crown of Stones series. It picks up two years after the events of book one.

I have to say that I have loved every book I’ve read by this author and this one holds up to the rest of them. The world building is superb. And, while it can slow the story down a bit sometimes, I love the attention to detail. When you are reading this story, you get lost in the adventure and feel like you are living alongside the characters.

This is definitely a page turner. You will find yourself losing sleep just to find out what happens next as the story takes you on an emotional roller coaster full of twists and turns.

Magic-Scars is the second book in THe Crown of Stones trilogy by C.L. Scheider. I highly recommend reading the first book Magic-Price. That story will fill in the gaps so you have a better understanding of Ian Troy’s story. Schneider effortlessly continues the story with Ian. As the story goes on I am falling in love with Ian. His character has been through so much that I was feeling sorry for him. With everything he went through his magic addiction, in this story he is a prisoner for King Draken of Langor again. He is hopeless and his spirit is broken. He is trying to gain his momentum again. Will Ian get away from King Draken? Will he be able to assume his magic? What will happen to Ian? Keep reading to find out about what happens next to Ian.

5-Stars

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars (Book 2) by C. L. Schneider is an amazing addition to this series. It is a continuation of the storyline that begins in book one and cannot be read as a standalone. Ian, Jarryd, Malaq, and many other characters are back in this exciting novel. The story was full of action, magic, friendship, and loyalty. Ian has no memory at the start of this book which made a huge difference in his character compared to the first novel. Things change as the storyline moves along though. I felt that the author did an excellent job pulling me in for an amazing climax with this story. Its length may seem daunting to some readers but so much is covered! I highly recommend it! It is so good and may be my favorite of the series.

If you read Crown of Stones Magic Price then I know you are in line for this one. The Crown of Stones Magic Scars by C. L. Schneider was a stellar encounter. I was blown away by Magic Price but this second book in the trilogy has me hooked for good. The nearly unbearable guilt that Ian Troy has been burdened with sees a new direction in Magic Scars. You can see the struggles that our own society is going through in the pages of this book. To see a thing and know that it is good and feel such sorrow because others can’t or won’t see it. There are a few steamy scenes that may be uncomfortable but this is a story you must read. You have my word you will not be disappointed.

The Crown of Stones: Magic- Price is the first book in the Trilogy of The Crown of Stones by C.L. Schneider. This is not my first book by C.L. Schneider. I liked the other series and when I saw this series I knew I had to read it. Schneider has great plot lines with amazing characters. This story has a little of everything- magic, action, war, and adventure. Her characters are complex and fully developed. This particular story is about Ian and his journey. Ian is part of fallen race, Shinree, who has an addiction to magic. Ian was made to serve his masters. He fought in the brutal war and he wanted peace. At the end of the war, Ian moved forward and was running from his involvement in ending the war. Will Ian be able to keep his addiction in check? WIll Ian’s world turns upside down in the awakening of the past? You will have to read the book to find out the answers to these questions and more.

Magic-Price (The Crown of Stones, #1)Magic-Price by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great read about temptation. Ian Troy is a Shinree, one of a race of magical beings. Ten years ago, he stopped a war with dark magic and paid the price. Now, he roams the world, helping out where he can. When pursuing an assassin, he discovers there may be more to magic than he imagined. As events unravel, Ian finds friends and foes alike and struggles to resist the addiction of magic. Can he use magic for good or will he pay the price of death and destruction once again?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns that I just couldn’t put down. Well developed characters like Ian as a strong warrior but with his anxieties underneath. Great cast of supporting characters like the sarcastic but kind Malaq or the supportive Jarryd.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like with the destruction and the use of grey and dark colours draining even the description of life. Or the scenes with the eldrings later on as gothic and monstrous and beautiful, wonderfully written. Or the swamp with its mud and bogs with their sounds and smells so vivid its as if you’re actually there.
A great example of world building with a range of magical beings in a fantasy world with their own rules and laws and histories.i also liked the sense of geography with its islands and swamps and mountains giving the reader a sense of the world as .harsh and unforgiving.
I also liked the use of suspense with details revealed slowly to make you want to keep on reading to find out the truth. The only issue I would raise is that there was some reptition with ians guilt which could have been reduced. Overall, a great read and I would give four stars.

As soon as I started reading this book I found myself pulled straight back in to the story and the characters. It took no time at all to find myself hooked with everything going on. I was right back on the journey with them and could not wait to find out what was going to happen.

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars (Book 2) by C. L. Schneider . This is the second book in the Crown of Stones series and while it is not my favorite genre I have gotten sucked into this world and I want to read more and more. This is the continuing story of Ian Troy who has been captured by his old enemy King Draken of Langor. Ian has been sentenced to prison and while there he has been tortured, drugged, robbed of his will, his memories and his magic and made to do unspeakable things. As he awakens from the drug induced stupor he realizes this world is not familiar to him and that world is terrified. King Draken has taken control of the Crown of Stones and tore it up. Ian must find a way to repair the damage he has done. While Ian struggles to come to terms with the new man he is he finds his link to the Crown of Stones and uncovers all kinds of secrets. To save the Crown he must learn to deal with his magical powers without using the destructive appetite it creates. Will Ian succeed? I highly recommend reading the 1st book before. This book continues with the amazing story of magic, betrayal and mystery. Once you pick it up you won’t want to put it down!

Magic-Scars (The Crown of Stones, #2)Magic-Scars by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Magic Scars is the second book in The Crown of Stone Series by C.L Schneider. As with the first book, this is an action-packed high fantasy- with adventure, magic, tension, drama, originality, brilliant world building, suspense, and so much more. I loved the first book, and couldn’t wait to continue the series, reading all three books pretty much back to back.
The story starts off a couple of years after the events in book one. Ian Troy had been imprisoned, tortured, and drugged to suppress his magic. He is ‘battle-scared’, both physically and mentally. The world he returns to hasn’t fared much better than him- suffering at the hands of the new High King. Ian is the only hope of freeing the people, and so there is much at stake. He carries a heavy burden of responsibility but struggles to piece his life back together again after what happened. What about The Crown of Stones- and what of his connection to it? His addiction to magic is also a problem. So, he starts searching for the answers he needs- delving into the past to find them, where he uncovers ancient secrets that have shocking implications, not just for him, but for his entire race. What price will the magic cost him this time- and will he find the resolutions he is looking for?
Again, this is pretty dark and heavy- and I was left really feeling for Ian and what he had been through, and what was still left for him to endure. Ms. Schneider world building skills are really superb, with so much attention to detail that it seemed so realistic and believable.
This fantastic series is really epic, and oh so intriguing. I very much enjoyed Ms. Schneider’s unique and very imaginative adventure. There are still a lot of threads left to tie up- but don’t worry everything comes together in the next book- Magic Borne (Book Three), which is available now to read.
I really recommend this book/series to anyone who loves an epic, action-packed fantasy!

Thank you, Ms. Schneider!

The initial introduction into the life of Ian Troy was epic. It brought to my mind stories like JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings Trilogy. As I proceeded on the journey with Ian Troy I was left in awe of this author’s imagination. The story captured my attention and I enjoyed the journey. The ending was dramatic and left me wanting more. I look forward to the next installment and cannot wait to continue the journey.

Wow what an amazing fantasy adventure this is.

Ian is Shinree. A magic users whos race has an addiction to using magic. However after Ian used magic to end a war and in the process killed his fellow soliders and the woman he loved he vowed to stay clear of magic for good.

However that has to change when there is conflict all over the place. He is sworn to protect the Rella empire but to do this is has to use his magic. With the help of some unlikely friends he starts on a journey to save Rella and on the way he learns more about his past and his history than he ever expected to know.

Its a page turner with loads of twists and turns the good guys turn out to be bad, the bad guys turn out to be good. No one is who they seem to be and all the while Ian has to work all this out and deal with his magic addiction before it takes over him for good.

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Price by C.L. Schneider is an exciting story that I found to be really unique and utterly captivating. Before I had even picked up this book I was drawn to it, from the cover that instantly caught my eyes to the description that completely hooked my attention.
When I delved into it the story itself was just as good. It was a detailed story that painted the picture of what was happening so vividly it honestly felt like I was there at times. I loved how none of the characters were made to seem perfect. It actually meant that I connected with them all that bit more because you could see their flaws.
This is a brilliant way to start a series and I cannot wait to see what is to come next.

Magic-Price (The Crown of Stones, #1)Magic-Price by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Crown of Stones: Magic-Price by C.L. Schneider is right up my alley and a wonderful start to the series. I really enjoyed her other series Nite Fire, I love a good fantasy story (it’s my passion and what got me hooked on reading, but I digress) which CL did a great job of writing this one. It’s dark overtones and unique magic, just made it more interesting. It is intricately woven and has many layers but the joy in the read was peeling back those layers to reveal the heart of the story and the characters. The story has everything you need and to make it a great, there is plenty of danger and action, drama and magic, intrigue and suspense, and the usual light vs darkness. I really enjoyed the unique twist used in Ian’s magic. CL gives us a world that you can easily imagine due to her writing and world building.

Ian has been living in fear of his magic and using it for a long long time. Having to live with the deaths of so many makes his life a living hell. When he stumbles upon a new threat, with its heart purely on destroying everything and anything to get what it wants, Ian is forced back into using the one thing he hates most.

If you love fantasy you need to read this.

Magic Price is the first book in The Crown of Stone Series by C.L Schneider. It is a really well thought out and intricately woven, action-packed high fantasy- with sword fighting, magic, adventure, intensity, drama, originality, brilliant world building, surprising developments, intrigue, suspense, and so much more. I loved Ms. Schneider’s Nite Fire Series, and I am a sucker for epic fantasy, so it was a no brainer when I discovered this series- grabbing a copy and immediately diving in. The story is darker than I had initially expected, with a raw grittiness that really gave this story an extra element of interest. It is also a very imaginative and original take on epic fantasy- especially with the lore of magic being so unique to this book/series.
Ms. Schneider brilliant world building skills are really highlighted here- as the world is ‘alive’ and entirely realistic and believable- so richly painted with attention to detail to all the different races, histories, and culture/s.
Ian Troy is a bounty hunter living a life of self-imposed exile. Living with the ghosts of the past which haunt his days and invade his nights. He single-handedly ended a war- but has been paying the price ever since. But when the past returns with a new threat against him, the land, and his people- Ian has no choice but to wield magic again. There is much at stake- but what will the price be this time?
This is a fantastic story/series- really is epic, intriguing, unique and very creative. Ms. Schneider proves her storytelling prowess with this book and series.
I really recommend this book/series to anyone who loves an epic, action-packed fantasy!

Thank you, Ms. Schneider!

Magic-Scars (The Crown of Stones, #2) by C.L. Schneider – Review by Jenni Bishop

Magic-Scars (The Crown of Stones, #2)Magic-Scars by C.L. Schneider
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Malaq tells his brother King Draken that Ian Troy is dead. His death came about due to the collapse of a mine.

Ian Troy was captured and kept prisoner by King Drakens demand. Prisoners are kept at Darkhorne prison which is a bleak and horrifying place and kept under control with a drugs. Troy has lost his memory as a result of the drugs administered to him while he was in prison. He wakes on a ship and doesn’t remember who he is and what happened to him. Troy tries to recover his memories but gets frustrated with how slowly they are returning. As the memories start to return he wonders if it was better not knowing. Troy’s magic use and the effects it has on his body and mind leads him to wonder if he will turn out like his father, a Reth.

Malaq is building a force of people from across the lands who are willing to fight for what they believe in. Troy’s relationships are strained and he struggles to rebuild trust as he blames himself for things that he has done whilst in captivity. He discovers he has many friends, old and new, who are willing to help him as they believe that any hope they have of freedom lies with him. Troy’s quest is to restore power to the Crown of Stones with the help of others but there are consequences for the magic users when they cast.

Troy and his best friend are my favorite characters but I felt anger and sadness by the things that happen to them. This is a fast paced story, that is full of drama, action and magic. I am sure you will enjoy this journey into this magical world.
