Goddess of Everything: A Blood-Curdling Tale of Truth, Freedom, and Love by Paul DeBlassie III – Review by Elizabeth Sanchez

Goddess of EverythingGoddess of Everything by Paul DeBlassie III
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Goddess of Everything is the only book I have read by Paul DeBlassie III. It was very dark and twisted psychological thriller. It wasn’t scary in the sense I couldn’t sleep, but more, when you think about it, the characters and story is pretty messed up. It is a story mainly focused on Mother Juana, a religious superior in Aztlan del Norte. This city has history of the supernatural, and events that cannot be explained any other way. Mother Juana runs an orphanage, and her son grows up to be a counselor of those children. He loves his mother and is blind to her cruel nature and the disappearances of children from her Orphanage. Gabriel (mother Juana’s son) tries to see the good in everything, but his wife, Consuela, has her doubts. When Consuela and their son disappear, and are believed to be murdered, Gabriel is the primary suspect. He expects his position, and that of his mother, will be his saving grace. Instead, things take a 180 and Gabriel is left to make some hard decisions about his life and his dedication to his mother. This story will mess with your head. The writing is very descriptive and provides great imagery. You can envision the events as they happen, and develop strong feelings toward the characters.

Goddess of Everything: A Blood-Curdling Tale of Truth, Freedom, and Love by Paul DeBlassie III is truly an intense supernatural thriller. It follows Gabriel’s life upon losing his father, blindly trusting his mother, and having married his wife Consuela all while being a seer and working with children who have experienced extreme trauma. Goddess of Everything will shock you, want to make you cry and will keep you at the edge of your seat. This book is not for the faint hearted and tackles some very controversial subjects but I would not shy away from the book. Great suspenseful read.

Loved the character development in this book. When Lauren stumbles upon the murder of her boss, unraveling the layers of Judge Murphy’s life only unfolds new mysteries about the woman Lauren thought she knew. It takes the help of everyone around her to keep Lauren from falling apart as the police close in on Judge Murphy’s killer. Everyone from the bakery shop owner to the old lady neighbor and the slew of characters in between were easy and fun to read about, with a few surprises and twisted along the way. This book kept me guessing until the end.

WOW!!! Gabriel de LaTierra can see things, after his father passes, he tells him that he may come in many forms but will always be watching over him. Gabriel’s mother, Juana,…is evil incarnate. She is Mother Superior of an orphanage where Gabriel (a therapist for the county) sends children who are lost and needy.
The feelings that came with reading this book can be overwhelming. Children are abused, innocent people killed, all for the sake of keeping Mother Juana young and virile. Her hold on her son is more than just a mother’s love for her son. She resents that Gabriel got married to his wife, Consuela. Consuela gently tries to pull Gabriel from his mother, his work should not drain him as much as it does. Her love is unconditional, can she get through to Gabriel before it is too late?
Not necessarily a book I would pick up and read, but am so glad I did. Again…WOW!!

This book was incredible! This book kept me on the edge on my seat. If you love crime and mysteries, you will not be disappointed with reading this book. This started out as the wrong place at the wrong time right at the beginning which catches you right away and takes hold and doesn’t let go and when your done your wanting more. There were so many twists and turns that leave you guessing ever time about what is going to happen. A crime with a number of suspects kept me guessing, a girl caught in the middle and no way out. Its we’ll written and really put together. The amount of detail to the foreshadowing left me to my own imagination. The way the author understands the courtroom and procedure is very well written. And finally, a great ending that tied everything together that explained it all. A very suspenseful and wonderful read, I highly recommend this one! I really loved this book. I’m anxiously waiting for more from this new author.

Stand Your Ground by A.J. Ullman is a suspenseful crime thriller. It had me hooked from the beginning. Stand Your Ground kept me hooked the entire time, wondering what was going to happen next. It is an intense read, controversial, and may need a trigger warning for some. I really enjoyed reading it, and it felt relevant to the times we live in. Silent Gavel: For Fans of Mystery and Suspense by Merissa Racine is the first book in A Crawford Mystery series. I thought this was a well written book that keeps you engaged from start to finish. The author really has created an interesting mystery but what really made this book for me was the main character, Lauren. I instantly liked her as soon as I started reading this book and I thought she was so easy to connect with. She is so relatable is was easy to imagine everything she was going through.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was developed and intriguing. I am looking forward to book 2!

I really enjoyed this crime story. The author does an amazing job with the characters making them all realistic and likeable or someone you could really hate. The twists and turns in this book are great and I didn’t suspect the murderer at all and was shocked when I realised who it was.

Lauren is a court reporter. She likes her job and thinks she’s good at it. However her life gets turned upside down when her Judge is found murdered in her own home.
Now there is a hunt to find the killer. Is it a random attack or could someone else be next?
When all the clues start pointing to Lauren she decides she needs to try and solve this herself before she is found guilty of a crime she didn’t commit.

With a ex husband to deal with, colleagues she doesn’t know if she can trust and the real killer in her group of contacts can she solve the murder or will she become the next victim.

Dark, gritty supernatural
This book grips you from the start and takes a thrilling ride. There is a lot to get through within the pages and it does get very intense in parts. This is good vs evil based within a blend of mythology, Christianity and psychology. With such complexity the reader could easily become lost, but the author skilfully layered the story and kept the story on track through the twists and turns. A worthy read.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Phenomenal book!

Goddess of Everything by Paul DeBlassie III is a spine chilling horror story that is on the same level of a Stephen King novel. I love a good horror book and this one did not disappoint!! There aren’t many horror novels that make me want to read with the light on and leaves me creeped out by dark shadows…but this one certainly fits that bill. Gabriel, who is the main character, has a mother who is different….in so many ways from most mothers. Mother Juana has some “powers” that she tends to use on others as well as on her son and is possessive and wanting to control all aspects of his life, as well as his family. She is also holds a role in the church and has expectations of her son being faithful to her – at all cost. As things start happening around him, Gabriel starts looking for answers. DeBlassie’s ability to intertwine the supernatural into the story line is intriguing and a book you will not want to put down. This is a must read – don’t just put it on your wish-list to read later, buy and read it now!!

I wasn’t aware this was a series, but I loved this book. Who I thought was the killer was not the killer which made my mouth drop. It’s written in 3rd person but the only feelings we get explanations on are Lauren’s. I enjoyed this writing style because I didn’t feel overwhelmed with information. I would love to read the next book.

Goddess of Everything: A Blood-Curdling Tale of Truth, Freedom, and Love by Paul DeBlassie III – Review by Hansini Wasalamudalige

Goddess of EverythingGoddess of Everything by Paul DeBlassie III
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

‘Goddess of Everything’ by Paul DeBlaisse III follows Gabriel de LaTierra as he is caught between the shackles placed upon him by his own mother’s supernatural powers of filial piety and religious devotion and his need for the truth, love and freedom. The book’s greatest strength is by far it’s world building and the foundations that predicate it- the powers bestowed upon characters like Gabriel and Mother Juana de la Cruz are rooted in Latinx legends and myth, making for a very interesting and rich read, and the setting of the sandy and desolate deserts of New Mexico not only reinforces the suffocating and almost drowning atmosphere of the story, but allows characters of colour to shine. DeBlaisse’s deep love for Latinx culture is embedded in everything- from something simple like the food that characters eat to the great and awesome displays of power that bring about ill-omens or earth-shattering feats.

DeBlaisse’s writing style in ‘Goddess of Everything’ is also a clear and evident highlight. Through the use of vivid and striking descriptions, DeBlaisse makes readers feel not only as if they’re witnessing the events first-hand, but as if they’re the characters themselves- as if the wrath of Mother Juana has broken through the confines of the book to wrap a ghostly and phantom hand around the necks of the audience. Reading this story, I could taste, hear, smell, see and, most importantly, feel everything the characters were experiencing as if I was having an out-of-body experience- every word cutting straight through the heart and into the soul. Everything was so detailed, I could almost believe that the events actually occurred- as if there was actually such a dangerously obsessed order that went around inflicting divine punishment on anyone who dared even blink the wrong way.

DeBlaisse’s narrative form also allows for some compelling and interesting characters. Gabriel is a great and likeable protagonist who ultimately just wants to do right by the world, allowing readers to be deeply sympathetic to his plight. His relationship with his wife, Consuela, is also believable and charming, with Consuela being a strong character in her own right as well. The stand-out character, however, is none other than ‘Mother’ herself- being downright terrifying due to the sheer lengths she’d go to to keep holding onto her power and yet utterly captivating as more and more of her psyche is unravelled as the book goes on. A mother’s love has never been so hideous and fascinating.

Overall, if you want a book to exacerbate the mood of a dark and stormy night or you’re just in the market for a good old-fashion spook that will settled in your bones and make you jump, then ‘Goddess of Everything’ is a must-read.

Reading this book was a slow start for me, but as I read and things started to come together more and more. I found myself wanting to know even more. O’Flynn is an amazing story teller and makes you feel like you are right there watching events as they unfold. Poppy is a character that knows she is unlike your everyday person but after everything she goes through she mostly holds herself together and becomes a normal part of society… you think…. The ending leaves me with that bit of happily ever after And I’m glad she got her happy ending… but I have so many questions that were left unanswered! This is the first book of the born bad series and I know I’m going to be reading the rest of the series ton get my questions answered!

Goddess of EverythingGoddess of Everything by Paul DeBlassie III
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A very creepy tale of a religious zealot who delivers pain with satisfaction and kills gleefully. Mother Juana is eerily obsessed with enduring and issuing corporal punishment as a means to gain God’s favour. She also has some supernatural ability and is a master at brainwashing, especially in regards to her son, Gabriel. Gabriel lives his life in service of needy and abused children, and spends so much of his time working with them that his home life begins showing cracks. His wife Consuela is a very interesting character as well. She shows herself to have a wisdom and knowing that seems beyond the number of books she has read. This story is illustrated in great detail, and definitely sends chills up the spine of the reader on many occasions. This book has a way of hooking you in and not letting go!

Goddess of Everything: A Blood-Curdling Tale of Truth, Freedom, and Love by Paul DeBlassie III is the perfect book to read as summer turns into the spooky season. I am a fan of supernatural horror, and this book is an excellent one. Gabrie՛l de LaTierra is a psychiatric healer in Aztlan del Norte. The Orphanage of the Holy Innocents is experiencing evil. These two together make an intriguing combination when his mother, wife, and child become involved. I was fascinated by this book, and the author’s writing style. Stand Your Ground
I enjoyed this book. Cady has a lot to lose in this race against time and crime itself in this murder mystery/thriller. There is suspense with some typical triggers of things such as BLM movement and Cady has to stand her ground and try to fight against her status being stripped from her. The question is will she be able to? Is this typical white privilege? Is this even about white privilege or is there more to the story going on and can she hold her own against the world? Read on and find out.

Stand Your GroundStand Your Ground by A.J. Ullman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Stand Your Ground is a suspense filled crime thriller by A.J Ullman. I have read and enjoyed his books in the past, so I looked forward to reading this one. It had a bit of a John Grisham Law and Order feel to it. I like the way it was told, starting out with the main character Cady shooting someone. We don’t really know the back story yet, and it slowly unwinds as the book progresses. I felt that was a good way to tell the story, because it gripped us from the beginning and got us hooked and wanting to know more. Then we were led through a wild ride of discovery and interviews wanting to know if Cady would be tried for murder or if it was justified self defense. There are always secrets or skeletons in the closet on these cases, and it was unrolled at a good pace. My main complaint is the story seemed filled with a lot of rambling fluff. Cady had a lot of analogies and tangents she would go off on, which seemed to take away from the action of the actual story. The book is very current, referencing BLM, George Floyd, #metoo, and being “woke.” It did not end as I expected in the beginning. Cady did not turn out to be what I thought she was, but I liked that it was not all known from the beginning. It kept the sense of mystery.

Stand Your GroundStand Your Ground by A.J. Ullman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Okay well I’m going to start off by saying this book definitely has “trigger warning” potential. Stand your Ground by A.J. Ullman is definitely a story that currently goes with the narrative of this country’s current narrative. In saying that I struggled getting through the book. It was definitely a trigger warning for me but I still pushed on.
Cady, a lawyer, who is on the verge of making partner at her law firm. Chooses to ride her bike home rather late from work. When she makes it to Jefferson Park, she runs into the one person who has silently threatened her, Mingo. Next thing she knows is her clip is empty and Mingo is dead. Cady decides to “stand your ground” stating it was self defense because she feared for her life.
Does she get arrested?
Does her “stand your ground “ explanation hold up?
Back to the trigger warning, though not a member of law enforcement, this is a story about a “white woman” showing up in an offbeat neighborhood shooting and killing a “black man.” Despite the person Mingo is, the public is screaming for his justice due to “white privilege.”
As someone who stands behind the “black lives matter” movement, to get equal rights no matter the skin color and educate those about the prejudices that they face on a daily basis. It rubbed me the wrong way coming up in a book of fiction. That being said, character development was fantastic. As well as the book itself was well written. I just didn’t care for that aspect. I feel like there’s more to this movement than what can be presented by 1 person, in a book of fiction no less.

Silent Gavel (Crawford Mystery #1)Silent Gavel by Merissa Racine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have a soft spot for murder mystery novels, and this one had everything I adore: a stereotypical crime, a number of possible suspects that keeps the reader guessing, a clueless hero/heroine, a sassy cop, & finally a great tied together ending that explains everything that the reader had been piecing together themselves. It was perfect, from the amount of detail included to the amount of foreshadowing left for the reader to imagine their own conclusions!

The character interactions between Detective Overstreet and Lauren were positively scrumptious. I kept hoping that there would be a romance side to the story and I wasn’t disappointed, it was subtle but it was there and I loved the undertones of the interactions as they unfolded.

This story was made all the better because I have family in Wyoming, where the book is based, and it all felt like I was home. The author’s descriptions were spot on, while also not focusing too overly much on detail. It made it feel all very natural!

Silent Gavel is the first instalment in the Crawford Mystery series and debut novel by Merissa Racine. This is an intriguing crime and investigation story- a murder mystery with suspense, danger, action, drama, and interesting characters.
Lauren Besoner left her old life behind for a fresh start. She found a job as the local court stenographer and her life seemed to be getting back on track. But then a judge is murdered, and Lauren finds herself under the spotlight as the prime suspect… looks like she’s going to have to figure it all out herself, before she is pinned with the crime. But a few complications spring up- bringing danger into the mix. Will she figure everything out and avoid further complications, or worse? You really will need to read all the intriguing details for yourself.
Looking forward to seeing what the next book in the series has in store for us.

Cady, a young up and coming lawyer finds herself front and centre involved in a serious crime scene. The tables are quickly turned, and Cady is now answering hiring herself a lawyer. While I think this book has potential, the character development is lacking and I found the characters unrelatable. I can see the great crime story the author is trying to portray, however the book itself felt unfinished and jumped around too much. Lacking a lot of details that would normally allow me to relate to characters.

This book was well written, and the writing style pulls you into the story right away and holds on till you can’t stop reading. The characters of the story mother and son were interesting to read about, and very real like it makes you wonder if this was a book really written about someone. There was a good originality to these characters and story. This story is twisted and complex which wrote a vividly detailed about how there is a dark side to religion. Between the nun’s ability to hurt you with their thoughts and Gabriel and his wife’s vision, it was a rollercoaster of a read as it kept me guessing till the end. Goddess of Everything by Paul DeBlassie III is one of the best psychological horror books I believe I have ever read since Stephen King or Dean Koontz. This author has given me the creepiest case of the wiilies that I have ever had. Gabriel has grown up with “Mom of the Year.” She also happens to be Mother Superior. Oh, and did I mention that she has some creepy supernatural powers that she uses to hurt people, including Gabriel, his wife and child? Through the years, we see Mother Juana pretend to be awesome and use her powers to hurt people. Gabriel has always had the power of light on his side. This story is an intense battle of good and evil. Gabriel and his wife, Consuela, are trying to protect their child and the children from the orphanage. Consuela is the one to show that Mother Juana is a mother-in-law from Hell. You can feel the tension and suspense as you read. I love a good story that leaves me so creeped out, I need a night on. Well-written and well-developed, this is a worthy purchase and must-read for all fans of horror and suspense!!!! Paul DeBlassie III is now one of new favorites. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Phenomenal book!
