Next Door To A Star Krysten Lindsay Hager is a wonderful YA story that is so reminiscent of being that age. The author has done a fantastic job of making the characters so relatable that you connect with them easily. The story is perfect for someone who is in high school as it touches on what they must be experiencing now. But at the same time it is also enjoyable for adults to read. I thought this was a sweet story and I really enjoyed every second of it. I would definitely say it is worth your time.

Next Door to a Star by Krysten Lindsay Hager is a cute YA contemporary novel that hits you in all the feels. Hadley is a 9th grader whose best friend has recently moved away partway through the school year, leaving her with no friends and what will most likely be a very boring Summer. That is until she is offered the opportunity to go visit her grandparents for the entire summer, who just so happen to live next door to teen TV star, Simone Hendrickson. Simone is everything that Hadley wishes she could have in a friend, including being popular, and throughout the Summer she learns the importance of friendship and that perhaps being pretty and popular isn’t always what it is cracked up to be. This story really brings out what being a not-so-popular teen is all about. If you have ever experienced being left out or not having many friends then you will definitely relate to this book, just as I did. This story really showed the side of being a teenager that not everyone sees and makes you realize that growing up is harder than it seems sometimes. I enjoyed reading this book and I am excited to put the sequel on my to-be-read list for future reading.

I just finished book 2, and all I can say is wow! What an emotional roller coaster! TS Simons has done it again. I had a hard time putting it down. This story is so well-written and the characters are very relatable. I felt like I was feeling Cam’s emotions with him. Cam grows a lot through this book and learns more about himself and the world around him. I have truly enjoyed this series so far and cannot wait to read the third book!

This is a very engrossing book. I sometimes struggle to stay interested in memoirs, but didn’t have that problem once with this one. I really resonated with Mary in her struggles as a child, despite my having a very different childhood than her. It was honest and poignant, and the writing made it easy for me to walk in Mary’s shoes as she remembers her life. I like how casually it was revealed that she has a facial deformity fairly far into the book, like it wasn’t something she focused on much, just a fact about her body. It didn’t define her any more than her dirty clothes. Ms. Gregory is able to embody her childhood self so well that it’s easy to forget that 8 year old Mary didn’t write it. It didn’t sound like an adult remembering; the voice and thought processes were clearly a child’s. I fell into this world and loved being invited into her world for awhile. Thanks so much, Ms. Gregory!

Let me first start off by saying, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! I’m familiar with this author’s work as I have read previous books and the first book in this series. She doesn’t disappoint me with her writing. Her books are exactly what I prefer to read. She truly writes about teenage angst and drama that I believe all teens go through. While I am not the intended audience for this type of book I think that anyone, especially females of all ages, will be able to reminisce on their school years and put themselves into the shoes of these characters. Except for the fact that not all of us lived next door to a star. But if you are like me you have probably dreamed and wondered what it would be like to do so. And if this is any indication of what it would be like, I would love to live it. Please do yourself a favor and pick this book up to read. It’s quick, fast paced and you won’t be able to put it down.

I was not sure what to expect at first when I started reading this book. I was pleasantly surprised, this book is really good! If anyone knows me, they know I love YA books. I really enjoyed this YA/Sci Fi story. To me, it is a story I never read anything like before. Meeting Andy Brand at the beginning just has my heart. Andy is kidnapped and questions arise as to why? Who would kidnap a boy in high school? You learn quickly nothing is as it seams, and there is definitely many twists, lies and turns in this story. He wants to protect “Kind” and help others, you read to see what happens next. Very good read…..

Next Door To A Star by Krysten Lyndsay Hager is my first book by this author, as well as the first book in its series. This book represents exactly what I remember my early teenage years to be like. The unsure feelings about where and how you fit into the world. The struggles involved with making and keeping friends, fitting in at school, and crushing on boys. It is definitely age appropriate for the preteen or older audiences. This story has a few ups and a few downs and was really an unputdownable read. I’m anxiously looking forward to reading book 2! 5 stars!

This book really takes you back to high school days. The cliques, the drama, it’s all very relatable. Hadley didn’t know what she was wishing for but was taught an important lesson. I enjoyed this book! Can’t wait to read book two.

Let me preface this by saying: this is not normally the type of book that I would pick up, but I am so glad that I did! If you are doubting whether or not it would be a good read, let me tell you that it is an almost nostalgic reminder of everything about your teenage years. When I look back on High School, I tend to remember mostly the good. This book brought me back to my hometown city, the drama, the popular vs the unpopular, and the confusing emotions that go with adolescence. Krysten did a GREAT job with the characters and the writing in this story. Being a Michigander myself, I was happy to see places that I recognized. Hadley is the majority of us – trying to find her way, figure out how to navigate life after her best friend moves away, and getting uprooted just when she thinks she has things slightly figured out. Charlotte is the quiet friend, but always loyal – even when she shouldn’t be. Simone and her group are the clique everyone wants to be in until they realize that even the clique isn’t happy and they are better off doing what makes them happy rather than trying to impress the masses.
I think this book is perfect for those getting ready to go into high school or the ones who are still navigating it. I’m excited to read the next installment and see what happens as they keep growing.

Well this definitely remind me of high school. Simone is a right user and she really ticked me off through this book with her attitude. However Hadley did the same with the way she treated Charlotte just to be popular. This is definitely a true reality of what teenage girls can be like with each other and others. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this young adult sci-fi thriller. The science referenced throughout was accurate and interesting to learn. The characters are likeable and I felt for Draco as he faced challenges on his journey. The story seems disjointed in places because there are a lot of different things happening and it was hard to keep them all straight at the same time. Great writing style and descriptions.

After reading this story, I am now a huge fan of Ty Drago! Dragons begins with Andy Brand waking up in a futuristic jail cell. He has no idea who kidnapped him or why he is there. Then he hears a voice. The Voice asks him to light a paper on fire. Andy pretends to not know how he could do that, but we learn that he is a supernatural being called the Kind. The Kind live among us as humans but have a powerful heat inside them that they call their dragon. The story goes from there into space and into rescuing a mining colony on a moon of Jupiter. It seems fairly cut and dry, but there is a twist. Andy’s world tips on his axis, but in the process, he learns more about himself. This story was sci-fi and completely fantastic! I could not put it down nor could I even predict what was going to happen. It is your next must read!

When young teen Hadley is sent to spend the summer with her grandparents in Grand Haven, she is grieving the loss of her recently moved away friend, and feeling awkward and alone. The only good thing about Grand Haven is that her grandparents live next to child star Simone Hendrickson, whom she hopes to befriend. When their grandparents arrange a meeting, Simone is incredibly intimidating to shy, unsure Hadley. She yearns to be as beautiful and put-together as these girls, and feels inadequate beside them. Simone blows hot and cold with her friendship, sometimes including Hadley and being friendly, other times she completely ignores her or ditches her to hang out with the other popular girls. Hadley isn’t sure what to make of this, but still desperately desires to fit in and be liked.
This story made me remember middle school and how desperate the desire can be to have people like you. I remember struggling, as Hadley did, between my smart nerdy friend who was there for me, and the siren call of the beautiful and popular girls. I definitely relived those days reading parts of this story, reminding me that the teenage years aren’t all hormones and smiles like some adults tend to recall. I felt Hadley’s awkwardness in her own skin deeply. Hager handled the emotionality of these characters deftly, and I definitely could feel the rawness of feelings in some of these moments. All in all, this was a good story, I’m glad I picked it up.

Travels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A Memoir by Mary A. Gregory is an intensely readable book. While sometimes the writing style can obsess over small details, other times the style is hauntingly poetic. Mary takes us through her life, letting us see all the struggles that she faced at such an early age. This story also touches on mental illness and the effects that it has on the ones close to it.
This is a very powerful, inspiring story. I laughed, I cried, and I got angry throughout certain parts of this book. All in all, this book touched my heart, as I’m sure it will others. It should be noted that while I experienced all this throughout the book, you may not. There are some dry, long parts that, at times, are hard to get through, and sometimes not everyone will like the end result. I know I did though.

Intriguing, intense and intergalactic This is definitely a case of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. I hesitated going into this book and I was so wrong. This is wonderfully written and takes the reader on a journey through self-discovery and the unknown areas of space. The author creates a whole new world and species and does so seamlessly. I was riveted from page one and didn’t want the story to end. I connected with Andy immediately and was so vested in his survival. A brilliant piece of writing – kudos Ty Drago!

I enjoyed this memoir. This is a story that is written with a lot of heart and emotions. The author’s use of details made the story feel as if I was right there with her. This is a story about Mary and how her life growing up wasn’t all that great but also how she overcame what she went through to have a better life. I felt a ton of emotion throughout this story and felt for Mary. This is a fast paced story that I read in one day. This is a great story which I highly recommend.

I held on to this idea that someday I would look normal. I would analyze the faces of the kids around me, then look at mine and see the differences between what was normal and what I looked like. As an adult, I no longer do that. I find the faces that have genuine kindness in them, no matter what they look like. There is a kindness that shines through certain faces. I’ve analyzed the forehead, the chin, the cheeks, the nose, the lips, every inch of the human face all my life, and nothing conveys kindness like the eyes—especially the corners of the eyes. A face holds so much power, so much pain, so little regard, so little in vain. It does do what you want it to do, and I realized that it can do so much for good. Travels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue is the emotive debut novel by Mary E. Gregory. It is an inspiring memoir that chronicles her young life of upheaval, tension, trauma, adventure, family relationships, dysfunctional family dynamics, secrets, humorous anecdotes, and overcoming adversity. The author shares her memories, which read almost like journal entries. She has a lyrical and poetic style to her writing – if not a little wordy and drawn out in places. Mary has been thorough a lot in her life- overcoming situations that would defeat many others. Her story is interesting and moving- many events made my heart ache for what she went through. I applaud the author for sharing her inspiring story- it is apparent that she poured a lot of heart and soul into her work. I really do think this would make a great movie.

Conceal and Protect…the code of ethics every Kind lives by. A young boy lives the adventure of a lifetime however not by his choice. Kidnapped and taken from the life he once knew; Andy must now decide who he is and what he stands for. Who is telling the truth and who is using him for his abilities for tier own personal gain? What a great little YA adventure book. The characters are very relatable, and I became so deeply immersed in the story. Watching Andy come into his own, the struggle with who and what he is, and the sacrifices he makes are truly an inspiration. I never thought that a story could guide me on the path to choose who I am and to encourage me to stay true to my personal beliefs and essence of what makes me who I am today. This book really helps us to believe in ourselves and shows how to follow our true self. I was pleasantly surprised at the story and how it unfolded with so many twists and turns. Just know that you are in for a great little adventure once you pick up this book. Entertaining, thought provoking, and FUN! What else could a person ask for in a book. Easy read for YA readers and a good lesson to stay true to oneself. I highly recommend this book for all who want a great read and adventure. Get lost in the world of the Kind!

Next Door to a Star is an angsty YA story by Krysten Lindsay Hager. As I mentioned, this is a young adult story full of all the teenage issues/angst/drama that comes with being a teen. The story is about friendship, cliques, fitting in, popularity, betrayal, young love, emotion, and heartbreak. Hadley Daniels is a typical teenage girl- who feels like an outsider and longing to be part of the ‘popular’ groups… she just longs to fit in. After her best friend moves away, Hadley has a hard time, becoming the target of the ‘mean girls’. Then things get interesting when Hadley goes to spend the summer at her grandparents home, discovering that the girl next door is none other than Simone Hendrickson, the famous teen television star. Simone is everything Hadley would love to be- and so Hadley is over-the-moon when Simone befriends her. But popularity may not be as great as it appears. Add a cute boy to the mix and things take a complicated turn. Hadley’s story is set to continue in “Competing With the Star” (Book #2).

Dragons by Ty Drago is a thrilling sci-do adventure that pulled me in right from the start. Andy was such a good character to read about – it really felt like you watched him developed as the story progresses. I didn’t know what to expect with this book as it is a new author to me but I was pleasantly surprised with how taken I was worn the book. I found it to be quite exciting and fast paced. I didn’t realise they it was a YA story when I started reading but I actually think that made it more likeable. The characters were all interesting, although I enjoyed reading about Andy the others all added something to that story. This is a well written book and a great new author I am excited to discover.

Krysten Lindsay Hager does a great job capturing the pressure we put on ourselves to be popular and/or to fit in. This book explores what real friendship should look like. It takes a look at how new friendships and new dating relationships grow or fizzle out. The main character, Hadley, learns some tough lessons on the importance of staying true to yourself. Next Door to a Star is the first in a series that should be popular with middle school and high school students.

What a great action-packed book! So much happened that at one point I looked down, figuring this must be near the end, and I was only 40% finished. Andy Brand is a teen who has the power of fire and thermonuclear energy on his side. After being kidnapped so that he can be used as a weapon, he starts to figure out just what he is capable of. His whole life he has been taught to “Conceal and Protect” his ability, so as not to be discovered. He and his Kind have been persecuted for their differences throughout time. But when faced with grave circumstances he has no choice but to test his powers. Some great depictions of space travel and what that could look like decades from now. Really engrossing, great characters, and a fast moving plot. Definitely recommend, I loved it.

I enjoyed this science space book. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed his writing skills and his attention to details that gave the story a realistic feel. The characters are connectable and made the story fun and entertaining to read. This is a story about Andy. He has been hiding his true self from everyone. But now that he has been kidnapped and pushed to limits that he never thought he could go. From here the story takes on betrayal, lies and you just never know if things are as they appear. This is a great adventure story that would be great for any young adult and anyone who likes space. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Dragons by Ty Drago turned out to be quite an great little adventure. It is YA sci-fi story, with action, lies, secrets, ‘powers’, betrayal, drama, tension, obstacles, high stakes, danger, and hidden agendas. This is Andy’s adventure- and we get a front row seat to all the developments. Andy has secrets- there is definitely more to him than meets the eye. So what happens when he is kidnapped. Why was he taken and what do ‘they’ want? He will soon find himself in a high stakes situation that will test him on every level. What happens makes for quite a fun read. I really enjoyed my first read from Ty Drago- and will definitely look for more of his books to read.

Ty Drago is a full-time writer and the author of eight published novels, including his five-book Undertakers series, the first of which has been optioned for a feature film. He’s also the founder, publisher, and managing editor of ALLEGORY (www.allegoryezine.com), a highly successful online magazine that, for more than twenty years, has features speculative fiction by new and established authors worldwide.

T.S. Simons wrote an excellent series with Antipodes. I really love the characters. You learn so much about overcoming obstacles either physical or personal. This second book takes the first book to a much higher level. What an outstanding read!!

Next Door to a Star by Krysten Lindsay Hagar a dramatic five-star read this is number two in the Star series, this was such a great reminder of the pain’s teenagers go through every day, the drama and upset and just the whole feelings rushing through make this a great story. I am definitely a lot older than the intended audience, but I still loved it. Hadley, Hadley, Hadley what are we going to do with you, I went between loving and hating her so much, but then I remembered she is a teenager and the drama that goes on at that age, it makes it all the more understandable. This is a sweet clean story that gives me hope and makes me desperate for number two.

The Liminal Space, the second in the Antipodes series, was a fantastic adventure of a novel. Cam has found love, family, and happiness on Lewis. Returning to his Scottish roots, he finds an amazing community of like-minded souls who embrace him into their world. When Freyja returns, he finds out the truth about what happened to his wife, and learns about the forces that were at play to trick him. When he discovers that there is a chance a loved one is still alive in another domed community, he is compelled to set out on a journey again in the hopes of finding them.
I thought this was a good follow-up to Antipodes, though I found the character of Laetitia a bit boring. She didn’t come to life for me as much as Freyja did in the first book. I did enjoy reading a bit of her backstory, and seeing how she grew up. All in all, I enjoyed this book and look forward to the 3rd installment.
