Susan writes children’s books as Susan J. Berger. And second chance romances with a touch of magic as Susan B. James. She writes older heroines because she is chronologically gifted and enjoys creating characters who remember that change is only on the outside. Inside our older shells is a much younger psyche. She writes picture books because she never grew up.

Susan’s other career is acting. On IMDB She is Susan Berger.

Born in Boston with the accent to prove it, Risa Nyman lived within ten miles of that city for decades until a recent move to the neighboring Ocean State.

For many years, Risa worked for the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to promoting active participation in our democracy, with a special focus on voting and elections.

Risa’s creative writing journey started when she found three pennies in a neat stack in an otherwise completely empty apartment that had belonged to her mother. It’s an interesting story, and there was definitely some magic in those pennies. Her debut middle grade novel, Swallowed by a Secret, was published by Immortal Works Press in January 2020.

In 1950, parents sent their single unwed daughters to live in houses of shame as some called it. Forced to give up their babies in closed adoptions, these women had to go on with their lives, some living for decades without knowing what happened to their sons and daughters.
When seventeen-year-old Betty Hamilton is dropped off at Dartmouth Home for Wayward Girls, she’s left with only two things—a suitcase full of her belongings and the baby in her belly. After her letters to Charlie, the love of her life, go unanswered, Betty finds comfort in one friend and the prayers she can escape the home with her child. Her hope is dashed, however, when after her baby is born, it’s given to a couple in a closed adoption, and the home casts her back out on the streets alone. With nowhere to go but back to her parents house, she tries to make a new life while trying to forget the baby she lost and the man she loves but can’t find.
Being adopted wasn’t ever something that crossed Marlena’s mind. Her parents were her parents. But after her father becomes ill, and she discovers she can’t help him; they finally tell her the truth—they adopted her just hours after she was born from an unknown young woman from the Dartmouth Home for Wayward Girls. Now desperate for answers and on a quest to find her paternal parents, Marlena begins to uncover the secrets behind her real parents love, her birth, and what happened to both of them after her adoptive parents took her home. Author and licensed educational counselor, Samantha Shannon, brings Jake back for this third tale about a dog who is different from most other dogs and critters. Even the sweetest and kindest dog can get scared, and sometimes fear makes us do or feel things we wouldn’t normally. We’ve all been protective of something we love or allowed our imaginations to run wild. Jake’s tale not only shows kids that they aren’t alone in having those emotions or worries. The story gives gentle suggestions on handling fears, meeting new friends who might look or act differently, and all while having a blast with their favorite growly character and his furry friends.
Includes Conversation Starters and Fun Activities for Children, Families, Schools, and Counselors to help with sharing, disability awareness, overcoming worries, and more!
This story is packed with loads of fun while also educating our little ones on overcoming fears, sharing, making new friends, and making someone feel welcome. Along with Jake’s story, this picture book also includes talking points to help our kiddos learn how to share, steps to help children squash worries and fears, and tips on how to get to know someone and possibly make a new friend!
Jake’s third book is packed with more interactive fun as kids get to fill in a sharing list, happy list, and even draw their own kindness critter. Kiddos will also have a blast finding all of their critter friends in a full-color find-and-seek page and learning about the kindness critters they spy on each page.
These activities are perfect for families, schools, and counselors to help bring families and friends closer together by encouraging sharing, healthy socio-emotional development and by encouraging awareness and inclusion of others whether they talk, dress, or learn differently or are a person with a disability.
A Positive Story to Promote Self-Confidence and Empathy
Jake’s story encourages children to meet new people and overcome worries and be kind to others who may be different from them. Knowing we live in a world where everyone is different, but we also have a lot in common, which will help create a kinder world, appreciate differences, and find connections. These topics are presented in subtle, sweet, and impactful ways for both young readers and the supportive adults in their lives.
Ages and Grades
While many kids in grades K-5 (ages 6-11) will be able to read this story independently or with assistance. Parents and grandparents will enjoy reading the story to baby, making it the perfect gift.

Samantha Shannon is a best-selling author and licensed educational counselor who uses her background in education, love for nature and animals, and experience aiding in the emotional social development of children to create fun and impactful books. Samantha has also published multiple books under her pen name, Parker Sinclair, in the fantasy and YA genres.

Samantha’s love for creatures great and small has led her to incorporate animals in all of the books, from eagles to cheetahs! Throughout her life, Samantha’s family has always included a dog, and they’ve always been more than pets. They were fur-brothers, sisters, and babies.

When Samantha had her first child in 2009, she wanted to write a picture book based on her sister’s dog, Jake. While visiting her sister in the Pacific Northwest, Samantha realized that Jake growled all the time. He growled while playing frisbee, getting an ear rub, running, and even when he was sleeping! Despite his unusual choice of noisemaking, Jake is a sweet dog, which makes him the perfect character for a children’s picture book.

With Samantha’s background in educational counseling, Jake’s first story includes a character education & loving-kindness activity for families, schools, & counselors. Jake’s story speaks to all of us about accepting, and appreciating, the differences in others–both caring attitudes we need in our diverse and beautiful world.

My school life was spent in a girls’ boarding-school specialising in classical ballet and on leaving I danced professionally, touring Europe, for 4 years. After that I ran my own ballet school in Athens, Greece and simultaneously volunteered as a veterinary nurse, as my love of animals is the driving force in my life. I returned to England with my horse and my cat, and now live on a smallholding in Shropshire with various farm animals and a constant stream of pets.

I started writing while in Greece and completed a Creative Writing Course with the Writers’ Bureau. The same year, I won an annual competition in the Writing Magazine for an adult Fairy Story.

On my return to England I wrote two children’s books, but my new life, caring for Highland Cattle, sheep, hens and pets, coupled with extensive global travel, meant that writing for publication took a back seat. I continued my love of writing with a daily journal and amusing travel blogs of each trip.

I am now writing full time and TALLY AND THE ANGEL is the first of a planned series. Their next adventure takes place in Canada, in North Yukon and the third in Japan. I intend them to have adventures in Greece, Egypt, Peru, Africa – anywhere I have been, really.

My first published novel, THE GRACEFUL GHOST, draws on my own experiences in ballet-boarding-school and my early teenage life and is a story that has lived with me for many years. It was shortlisted for the UK Selfies Award 2021.

My school life was spent in a girls’ boarding-school specialising in classical ballet and on leaving I danced professionally, touring Europe, for 4 years. After that I ran my own ballet school in Athens, Greece for a number of years and simultaneously volunteered as a veterinary nurse, as my love of animals is the driving force in my life.

I am now writing full time and THE GRACEFUL GHOST draws on my own experiences in ballet-boarding-school and my early teenage life, including divorced parents and a father who ‘took the dog’.

I am currently working on a 6 book series called TALLY AND THE ANGEL. Tally and her angel’s first adventure takes them to India. In the second book they go to Canada, in North Yukon and the third in Japan. I intend them to have adventures in Greece, Egypt, Peru – anywhere I have been, really.

My passion and a common theme in my writing is my Icelandic heritage. I started with children’s books and folklore, and enjoy adding a little taste of Iceland in my contemporary novels. I spent thirty years in the telecommunications industry, which was rewarding and challenging, and had a thread of writing. When my father passed away in 2015, I reassessed my priorities, opted for early retirement, and indulged my passion for writing. In the past five years, I have written several children’s folklore books, a cookbook, a novel, and a new non-fiction motivational book, all honoring my Icelandic heritage. I am a snowbird, living in South Dakota during the summer and Arizona during the winter, migrating with my husband, our four horses and three dogs. His passion for team roping and my love of rodeo has carried over into my novels, in what I hope is an interesting and unique experience for readers.

Do some people fall in love more often than others?

Opposites attract, but can they ever hold?

Are some people incapable of learning from their mistakes?

These questions haunt journalist Allison Tyler-Wilcox after meeting Jake Sorenson at his sister’s wedding. Despite his seven divorces, Jake considers himself uncommonly lucky at love. Baffled by his sanguine attitude—and his offhand suggestion that she could be the next Mrs. Sorenson—Allison talks her editor into letting her explore the compulsion some people have when it comes to saying “I do”.

As soon as she arrives at Jake’s 1,500-acre ranch in rural Oregon, Allison realizes she has misjudged him, underestimating his appeal to the opposite sex and his worldliness in general. Despite his multiple divorces—and his current dubious relationships—Jake maintains his marriages weren’t failures even though they ended. During muleback rides and impromptu tango dances, Jake shares with level-headed Allison his unique philosophy on life and love, leaving her confused for the first time about her own marriage, her ideals, and her feelings for the roguish mule breeder.

NOT YOUR ORDINARY LOVE TRIANGLE…

Frank’s Coffee Shop on Manhattan’s Lower East Side becomes a safe haven for Tobias Jordan, a paparazzi-phobic 90s rock star, drawn to the obscurity of the dingy hole-in-the-wall, and Philip Glessner, a disgraced architect, who ducks inside to elude a posse of blood-thirsty reporters. What keeps both coming back is their waitress, Priscilla Vanderpool, who becomes an improbable paragon of virtue to the shell-shocked Philip, and an unwitting muse to gifted and jaded Tobias. But neither man sees her as she really is: a philosophical hard-luck case with a quick wit and a twenty-year habit of penning insightful and haunting lyrics that no one has ever heard.

Alligators in the Trees—a line from one of Priscilla’s songs—symbolizes the bugaboos that lurk in the minds of all three characters: in Tobias, the fear he’s lost his talent, and that his string of model-mistresses will be the downfall of his soul; in Philip’s guilt-ridden conscience as he struggles with the collapse of his most touted building and the prospect of losing custody of his daughter if he doesn’t meet his estranged wife’s demands; in Priscilla, the fear of actually making a decision about her life instead of always taking the path of least resistance. Fate intervenes and forces all three to act on their true desires.

Genre – Biography, Memoir, Fictionalized biography

Page Count – 255 Pages

Cover Designer – Six Penny Graphics

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32055542-finding-ruth

As fiercely independent Ruth struggles to stay self-reliant at the age of 86, each day brings her closer to an event that will alter her life forever. While her author daughter shifts through Ruth’s possessions prior to her move into a skilled nursing facility, she discovers a previously unseen photo from 1949 and realizes how little she knows of her mother’s life.

As Alzheimer’s continues to warp Ruth’s once sharp mind, she can no longer shed any light on the past. Yearning to know who her mother was as a person in her own right, the author painstakingly reconstructs Ruth’s life from photos, letters, public records and firsthand memories.

What emerges is a portrait of a bright, beautiful woman who is propelled through decades of broken promises and heartache, bouncing from one ill-fated relationship to the next, but always staying strong, always surviving. Through a timeline going back sixty years, the author gleans a much better understanding of the woman she had known only as Mom.

Though I was always an ardent reader, I was convinced I couldn’t string sentences together if my life depended on it. Fortunately for me, when I was looking for something creative I could do from bed—if my mystery illness progressed to that point—I decided to try my hand at it. No pressure, no expectations. I didn’t tell anyone what I was up to. I just wanted to see if I could string sentences together and tell an interesting story.

I remembered a quote by Hemingway, “Write about what you know.” With this mandate, I chose the time spent living with my husband in the French Quarter of New Orleans as the backdrop for my story. I typed out my first two paragraphs on my forty-third birthday. I finished that book on my next birthday, and started my second the same day. I now consider those my “practice books”.

As my still-nameless illness progressed, I continued running the family business and continued to write. Nine years after my symptoms began, I finally received a correct diagnosis: Lyme disease, and more specifically, late-stage Lyme, because it had been allowed to progress untreated for so long.

Though the pain was almost unendurable, I clung to my writing like a life preserver. It allowed me to crawl up inside my head, out of my body, giving me brief respites from the vast array of pains.

Though I would never wish this disease on anyone, I can honestly say I am grateful for the path my life took, for it gave me the gift of writing. I now have nine published books, all of which have special significance for me. I write general fiction, mysteries and some nonfiction.

Once Upon a Lyme: The Tale of Two Journeys, is the detailed account of the path my mystery illness led me down as I sought help from over two-dozen doctors, and the gift of writing that was the unexpected upside of being so hopeless ill.

Finding Ruth was inspired by a previously unseen photograph of my mother taken when she was nineteen. I found it as I was going through her things prior to her move into a skilled nursing hospital. That gorgeous photograph of her looking so happy and full of promise made me realize how little I knew about her life before I came along. Because Alzheimer’s has taken away all her memories, I painstakingly reconstructed her life from public records, thousands of photographs, and what my brother, sister and I could remember. The message in the tribute to my mom is Ask while you have the chance.

As of this writing, I have just completed the fourth book in the Madeline Dawkins mystery series. I’m still in love with writing and I still squeal with joy to think that I’ve written eleven books and self-published nine of them. If there is a message in this, it’s Never discount what you are capable of achieving.

Since she’s the only person in hundreds of years with the ability to see them, the many ghosts of Tansy have flocked to Grace since birth. She doesn’t mind. She prefers the company of the dead to that of the cliquey kids at school.

Grace is happy with her strange life, until one day, the ghosts tell her about the secret her town has hidden for centuries. There’s a reason there are more ghosts than living people in Tansy. Three-hundred years ago, a lonely witch cast a spell that mistakenly trapped the soul of every person to ever set foot in the tiny town. So when the spirits beg her to find a way to break the curse, Grace is eager to help.

As she searches for answers, Grace makes discoveries about the secret her family hid for generations and a world of magic hidden in her own backyard.

To complicate matters even more, Stella Dixon, the Starlets new dance instructor, tells the princess about a program in Eclipston that helps orphans find their forever families. Kara loves the idea and wants to implement a similar program in Starrycrest, but others in the royal family refuse.

The tiny royal soon realizes that, in order to be the princess she has always hoped to be and make Starrycrest a better kingdom, she must take matters into her own hands as her mother once did. After an encounter with Victrollia, an evil troll who hates the Denisons and wants to avenge the death of her cousin, Trovella, goes terribly wrong, the princess and her loyalty to her family is put to the ultimate test. In the end, Kara will learn that living life to the fullest means you must love the way you dance.

Much like the main characters in her novels, Allison M. Boot, has a disability. She writes to spread messages of self-acceptance and equality to young boys and girls traveling paths similar to hers in hopes of inspiring them to live their lives to the fullest.

Jake is off to daycare, but he’s worried about what’s in store.

Going somewhere new can be scary–trying something different, even more.

How will he get ready, and what will help him through?

What will bring him comfort and help prepare him for something new?

Jake loves his comfy bed, close friends, and favorite trail, but now he’s off to Doggy Daycare for the first time. He’s worried others won’t like him and run away, and he doesn’t want to leave the place he knows best. His best friend Neet is there to help him, along with a surprise from his family, but will Jake overcome his worries and have fun? And is he the only one nervous about being in a new place? Kindness, comfort, and aid from loved ones fill this tale with love and compassion.

Jake the Growling Dog is a fun-loving tale about new adventures, friendship, handling stress, and overcoming fear.

Author and licensed educational counselor, Samantha Shannon, brings Jake back for this second tale about a dog who is different from other dogs and critters. After making some new friends at home in his first book when others began to see him as the sweet and kind dog he is despite his growly voice, now Jake’s family takes him somewhere new. We’ve all been nervous at one time or another about a new experience, and Jake’s tale not only shows kids that they aren’t alone in having those butterflies in their tummy it also gives them gentle ideas on how to handle those worries and fears while having a blast with their favorite growly character and his furry friend.

Includes Conversation Starters and Activities for Children, Families, Schools, and Counselors to help with confidence, stress, and preparing for new experiences.

Samantha Shannon is a best-selling author and licensed educational counselor who has published multiple books under her pen name, Parker Sinclair, in the fantasy and YA genres. Sites: parkersinclair.net & jakethegrowlingdog.com
