Body Checked (Astoria Bay Thunder Book 2) by CJ Cartwright – Review by Beverly Finnie

Body Checked (Astoria Bay Thunder #2)Body Checked by C.J. Cartwright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love this series! Body Checked is a wonderful sports romance. The dynamic and chemistry between Bridger and Tia is undeniable. There’s just some obstacles and secrets on the road to happiness.
Nothing stays a secret forever, it always comes out. Unfortunately for Tia her secret is destroying her life even before meeting Bridger. Her ex-boyfriend won’t let her go, and takes great joy in destroying every aspect of her life. Which is why when she meets Bridger she keeps him at arm’s lengths as much as possible.
Bridger is in turmoil on the ice and in his personal life. In jeopardy of losing everything, his agent goes into damage control mode to clean up his image. Neither he nor his agent ever expected Tia to come barreling into his life, changing everything.
The author puts us on a rollercoaster of unrequited feelings and lust. The depiction of these two stubborn characters is perfect. There’s so much to lose for both of them, will they actually take a leap?
Will Tia’s ex-boyfriend come rolling in again to ruin it all?
I also really enjoyed how their story runs simultaneously with book one’s story between Brynn and Levi. The best part is you don’t have to read book one to enjoy book two. It’s a standalone as much as it’s a series. Not that you shouldn’t read both, especially if you love romance and hockey.

Distant Heart Sounds (Nurse Morgan Series Book 1) by Kate MacInnis – Review by Shai Flores

Distant Heart Sounds (Nurse Morgan #1)Distant Heart Sounds by Kate MacInnis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this fun, easy-to-read book that combined fun with a little bit of a ghost story. I felt like it was a little bit “Grey’s Anatomy” combined with a little bit of “Ghost Whisperer”. If you are a fan of either of those TV shows like I am, this will be a great choice for a summer read! The characters were well-developed without slowing down the story, and I found myself putting myself in Morgan’s shoes which to me is the sign of a well-written character. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series!

Isabella Bride of Ohio: American Mail Order Brides #17 by Debra Parmley – Review by Angela Hayes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 Stars

Isabella Bride of Ohio (American Mail-Order Brides #17) by Debra Parmley is an historical romance- a bit of a romantic suspense with drama, danger, and adventure.
After the death of her parents, Isabella has tried to make ends meet- but it hasn’t been easy, and luck certainly seems to be against her. She is left with little choice but to apply to be a mail-order bride. So she sets off on her long journey to secure her future. But along the way her safety is threatened when she becomes the target of a kidnapping plot. What happens? You will really need to read all the intriguing details for yourself.
While I did enjoy the story, I would have liked to have read a longer version, as I felt that the character development, chemistry, and connections needed more time to develop and ‘grow’. I think with a little more length, this story could be elevated to an even higher level.
Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Parmley does next…
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Debra Parmley!

No Pistol Tastes the Same (PTSD Disaster Book 1) by Jacob Paul Patchen – Review by Lucy Machard

No Pistol Tastes the SameNo Pistol Tastes the Same by Jacob Paul Patchen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is incredibly intense. Going into it, I knew it would be a little heavy, considering what the synopsis is about, but it was way heavier than I expected. I am a person suffering from PTSD, and even though I didn’t get mine through war, the details and intensity of the flashbacks did almost trigger mine, so if you struggle with PTSD go into this book carefully and delicately, and take breaks when you need to. That being said, however, it is a very good book, and wonderfully written. The author is keen on details, and it goes from a rocky beginning to a well done ending. I’m looking forward to the second book, now that I know what I’m expecting.

The Second Alpha HeirThe Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Stars

The Second Alpha Heir is the debut novel by C.L. Ledford. It is a captivating paranormal romance with werewolves, magic, werewolf law/politics, danger, action, threats, drama, fated mates, chemistry, tension, destiny, friendship, family, self-discovery, spirit, determination, love, and loss. Ms. Ledford proves to be a talented storyteller who weaves a story full of clever and creative touches- spinning a great story with superb world-building and her own original take on vampire lore.
Nolan was such a great character- I found myself connecting with him right from the beginning and was soon completely invested in him and the outcome of his story. With the death of his brother, Nolan’s world turned upside down. He was the second son, not meant to lead their pack. But now, with the death of his brother, responsibility is thrust upon him. He is so young, but duty waits for no one. And so his adventures begins. Add in a ‘fated mates’ component, threats from a rival pack, his parents capture, and the safety of his entire pack at risk- and things get pretty intense.
Looking forward to more from C.L. Ledford…
Happy Reading!

Thank you, C.L. Ledford!

This is the third installment in the series and it really blew me away. Our writer has a very unique writing style and really knows how to take her time and let the characters, plot, and storyline develop beautifully. Her characters show such development and emotions that its hard to not feel like your right in the middle of story going through everything the characters are. Full of actions, emotions, consequences and more this story will blow you out of the water.

Vive La Resistance is the third book in the Donovan Trait series by Seelie Kay. It is an engrossing paranormal romantic suspense- with vampires, vampire politics and law, danger, drama, conflict, high stakes, humour, race wars, tension, and plenty of originality.
Ray Donovan and his wife Shirley have been through so much, but the stakes have gotten even higher now with not just their own safety at risk, but also that of their children, as well as the entire half-blood population. War is upon them and there is much riding on the outcome of their battles. So, strap yourself in as things are about to get interesting!
If you have yet to read the first two books in this fantastic series, then I highly recommend that you do before starting on this one. There is a continuation of storyline as well as having important backstory, character details, and other key information to discover in the other two instalments which will certainly enhance your reading experience of this book.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Seelie Kay!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Power Play by CJ Cartwright is a second chance hockey romance. It is book one in the Astoria Bay Thunder hockey series. I know almost nothing about hockey but I definitely wish I did now! Brynn is recently newly divorced and looking to start over, new town, new life, new romance…. Or old? Levi is a professional hockey player who isn’t sure what he wants. Until he sees her and realizes who she is. Light hearted, cute, fun and flirty. Man what I wouldn’t do to be snowed in with a hockey team. The love, the heartbreak, the history, the story, it is all so perfectly written, I loved it. I couldn’t read the book fast enough to see how it ended. Super pumped for book two but I also neeeeeeed more of this couple!

I can write anything I want about this book- the writing style, the author but the main thing that comes to mind is how absolutely therapeutic it must have been to get this story out on paper. I am one of the few that consider themselves “not a dog lover”. I have a hard time wrapping my head around loving a pet as if they were my own blood for them to leave me too soon. The story of Kingsley and the love he was shown reminds me of why so many find the journey worth it. This was a tough read for obvious reasons but a story of hope and love all the same. There were times that the author repeated herself- I don’t say this as a criticism, it made the writing feel more authentic, as if we were talking about the experience over coffee or a friendly visit.
I could go on and on about various aspects or personal thoughts but I’ll leave you with the recommendation that you should read this with the expectation that your heart will break and simultaneously warm with hope.

Finding Starlight (Quimby Grove #1)Finding Starlight by Shannon Nikole
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a wonderful debut novel by the author! From the first page it hooked me in and I couldn’t stop reading until the final page. I found it a well written story with well-developed characters, and I absolutely love the name Ellawyn or Ellie for the main character. You could really relate to the characters in the story, they weren’t perfect and I thought the author did a fantastic job of show realistic reactions to the different events in the story. There was a nice balance of mystery, suspense, and romance throughout the storyline. The small town vibe felt spot on and it seems like such a wonderful place to visit. I loved the interactions between Ellie and Benji and how sweet they were together and it was a pleasant surprise at how steamy the relationship between Ellie and Beckett got. I am so excited to read the second novel coming out later this year!

So many things going on in the lives of Donovan Trait and his family! A war with the Vampire Coalition, trying to keep their family alive, and at the same time keeping the humans from finding out. What a great book! The story grips you even if you haven’t read the other books in the series, which I plan to read in the very near future. I really felt that I connected with and understood what they were going through.
I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them a lot. Love how she adds some humor to the stories. Can’t wait to read more of her books!

Between Darkness & Light (War of Destiny #3)Between Darkness & Light by Theresa Van Spankeren
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed the first two books of this series immensely. This one is written so differently than the previous two but once again is a masterpiece.

Julia and her relationship with the Ka-tet is shattered after she betrayed them in the previous book. Especially her relationship with Matthew. She is basically disowned by him. Matthew has moved away from the others and started a new life on his own. When Julia’s leader disappears suddenly, she seeks out Matthew to help.

The author once again built an amazing world and the people within. Even though this book was significantly different, it still had me in a vice and I had to finish it! I enjoyed ‘watching’ Julia deal with the consequences and her feelings towards everything that has happened.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ciarán Donnelly is back and he is settling into his new life with his wife and unborn twins a bit more each day and is feeling like the hold his past had on him is not as strong as it was, but now his life is in upheaval yet again when he starts having vivid dreams again. This time though, they are visions of his children being kidnapped by the long dead priest who entombed him for his past misdeeds, Ruadhán, but Ciarán knows that this can’t be true, but he is still very unnerved by them. However, the anxiety which these dreams cause Ciarán are affecting his relationship with Caitlin and she is feeling the stress as well, which is no good for her while pregnant with the twins, but Ciarán as usual bottles everything up inside until it becomes too much and he explodes with the pent up emotion and this helps their situation even less.

As Ciarán is learning to deal with his anxieties, the dreams are repeating and are now affecting his ability to both sleep and keep his emotions in check, but when he does finally speak to those around him, they put forward the valid points that it may just be he fears around being a parent coming to he fore and that because Ruadhán was devoted to his goddess, there is little chance that he could have had the same punishment as Ciarán and Aodhán, his brother and Aodhán is keen to support this theory as well. Meanwhile, tensions still rise as the twins near their due date and with everything else going on, Ciarán knows he needs to be there for Caitlin more than ever.

Meanwhile Aodhán is working with the archaeology team again and decides to go and see the tombs in the Hills of ár Sinsear for himself so that he can put Ciarán’s mind at rest about Ruadhán, however, what he finds there just makes their anxieties worse, an unoccupied tomb which has all the calling cards of use, despite being empty. While Aodhán spends more time with his almost adopted family, a surprising piece of history is unearthed and leads to another interpretation of what Ciarán’s dreams could mean and opens a whole host of new complications to an already stressful scenario. Could Ruadhán have survived the fifteen hundred years and come back to haunt the two brothers, if so, what is his plan and can Ciarán and Aodhán stop it before their loved ones are hurt? This is another whirlwind ride in this historical fiction meets modern day romance, in this time travel fantasy which keeps you enthralled as the other books while spinning a yarn you will want to speed through, yet savour at the same time.

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail (Jake the Growling Dog Book 3) by Samantha Shannon – Review by Gabrielle Lee

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His TrailJake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail by Samantha Shannon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jake the dog and his squirrel friend notice some different tracks during their latest romp through the trails. The two soon let their imagination get away with them and that leads to them fearing the unknown. When Jake’s friends come to visit, they help him figure out just what could have made the different tracks and face his fears.

This is a sweet and cute story. It helps to show that something different or something new is not something to be afraid off. The story moves at a nice pace and the characters are relatable and likeable. I like the way that is shows children that those with disabilities or those that are different in any way are nothing to be afraid off and they are the same as everyone else. It is safe to be their friends and have fun with them. Also, nice to see the dog who is different being proud and not hiding the difference. This is a nice book that helps to assure children about all these things.

Human Hearts (Draco Sang Trilogy Book 3) by Mary Beesley – Review by Christen Ware

Human Hearts (Draco Sang #3)Human Hearts by Mary Beesley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A multiple-POV masterpiece that encases everything that a fantasy reader hopes to encounter: raging battles, the fight for a crown, and a love that defies all odds. The Draco Sang series has been one of beauty, strength, tears, and perseverance. Suza and Ferth, Jade and Tobin, and all of the characters that warmed this book with their witty banter and sharp skills. They have earned a place as much loved characters, and it is a shame that this appears to be the last of the installment as I would have loved to see their development further.

This story pick up in the heat of battle and follows each of these characters as they face hardships that most do not even imagine. Their decisions and quick wit leads them on periodically intertwining paths that encourages the story along in a fast-paced read without feeling rushed. It leads the reader through the multiple lives and personalities to match as the story continues. This book was a lovely refresher because most fantasy tends to hint at similar themes and occurrences. But this? A work of art that is both a palate cleanse and a lovely book to get a reader out of a slump. The characters were easily loved and my emotions always seemed to match alongside their ever changing ones.

A very, very great read.

Bound by grace is the prequel to Caging Grace by Carsen Lane. This is a small novella that can be read in a quick sitting. It sets up the beginning of Graces’ story by showing the love that Liam and Aggie had. You are given a lot of backstory for each main character and it gives a little more insight to what you will read in Caging Grace. I love the introduction to Liam, Aggie, Carl, and Mason. The only downside is I wish it was a full novel so we really got even more of Liam and Aggie but that’s just my selfishness lol. You can easily read Caging Grace without reading this one but why would you:)

Queen of Hearts (Heels, Rhymes & Nursery Crimes Vol. 21) By Natalina Reis – Review by Stephanie Chapman

Queen of Hearts (Heels, Rhymes & Nursery Crimes, #21)Queen of Hearts by Natalina Reis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mimi Mioyo is the star of this dark fantasy story set in the late Victorian age. As an abused woman, she had sought safety with Seree, the woman who provided shelter for women under the guise of a gentleman’s club. They had dubbed Mimi the Queen of Hearts. She would play a card game, with a night in her bedroom as the prize. She would purposely lose, and when the man arrived in her bedroom, she would offer him some wine laced with poison. Only, she didn’t kill the men. She hit them below the belt, literally, as the poison would render them unable to achieve an erection permanently.

Mimi needed more herbs to make her poison, but becomes alarmed when her normal supplier doesn’t arrive. Jacques “Jac” Tourville tells her he had bad luck and that Jac would be her supplier. Much to her dismay, Jac shows up at the gentleman’s club and plays the card game. He wins and follows her to her room. However, Jac has no intention of drinking anything, nor is he wanting to have sex with her. Instead, he offers her something much more sinister.

This is a short story of revenge on vile men who cheat and abuse women. Mimi was a type of vigilante, but there are always holes in every plan. Jac turns out to be the hole in her plan. I recommend readers who like strong female characters who also are not innocent to read this book.

Finding Starlight (Quimby Grove #1)Finding Starlight by Shannon Nikole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was so easy to fall in love with the characters in this book. Ellawyn had gone through so much, and she really had to stop and figure out how to take care of herself, at the same time she was learning how to let people back in. Beckett was such a gentlemen throughout the whole story, he never once pushed Ellie, but always made sure he was there for her. And of course we cant forget about Benji. He might have been my favorite. He took Ellie in when she first arrived to town, and of course introduced his grandson Beckett to her.

TW: domestic abuse, stalking

I think the recovery one has to go through when they are a victim of abuse is very difficult to understand let alone write about and i think that Shannon did a great job. She was able to showcase Ellie’s fear in a way that was understandable to someone who has never experienced abuse in their life. How to can be hard to move forward, but even when you do you might still have a set back from time to time. Its just one more thing to work through.

Will definitely be reading more from the author and I cant wait for Quimby Grove #2.

Bridger is a playboy famous hockey star who needs to clean up his act. After what should have been just one spicy weekend together, the pair cannot deny their attraction and it turns into a give and take game of should we, shouldn’t we. Let me help, THEY SHOULD. Hands down an awesome pair to read about, so fun and flirty with relatable attitude. I’m itching for a book 3 to find out who will be next. Send some thunder my way!

All Krystina wants to do is travel the world and be a famous blogger but when her Loukas her childhood nemesis decides to go along with her, as she goes through, she has no breathing room as he is constantly with her all the time. When they discover challenges long the way the most unlikely person helps her through Loukas.

So, when Krystina takes on the challenge to find her grandfather will they uncover the secrets of the past and locate the lost family member or will they be dragged into problems they never envisioned.

This is the third book in the series and follows the third sister Krystina, although this can be read as a standalone story it would be good to have some of the crossover from the first two books as back story but is not necessary. As always, the story is well written and with the twists and turns in the story will keep you turning the pages to the end.

I loved the character of Krystina in the other stories, and I think Loukas is the right character to compliment Krystina although at first, she does not think so. The emotion and the turmoil in the story follow brilliantly and you feel the journey as if you are there with the character along the way. It is lovely how the relationship is a slow burn and that the reaction of finally realising that they are destined for each other is lovely to read.

I can’t wait to read the next book.

Uhhhhh-mazing!!! The best of the series. Steamy. Emotional. Fantastic. Wonderful. Brilliant.

This is my favorite of the series so far. The story made me feel all the feels and heat. Kenzie and Jonas had a rough start that ended in disaster. After a decade apart where each had rebuilt their lives, they have a chance meeting. Kenzie is one of the many chefs vying for a position as a head chef in one of Jonas’ new hotels. The fire, the spark, the desire, the emotions, the connection is all still there but they just can’t stop hurting each other. Once again, ending in disaster.

When Jonas finds Kenzie after she disappeared from their latest disaster, it looks like there could be a new beginning. The last secret that Kenzie had been holding onto surfaces causes a rift that might be impossible to come back from. Third strike for the couple. It could be their last. Are either willing to try again? Can the last secret destroy more than just them? Can they move past their history of hurting each other to finally find love?

The author finds a way to throw in more twists when you think all the twists have been undone. I love this series. I loved Conveniently Yours, but this one is my favorite. Everything about this story was great, from the prologue to the epilogue, I was hooked on each word. Fan-dam-tastic. I haven’t read a single thing by this author that has disappointed. Looking forward to the next Titan (again!)!!!

I loved the first two books in the series, and this one was certainly no different. I loved the story development as well as the character development between the first two books and this one! As always the author crafted together a wonderful engaging story, with everything I love about their writing!

Donovan and Shirley are facing the dilemma at hand, and at the same time raising their kids and giving them the best life possible. What would that consist of in a perfect world? Perhaps living free, and not fearing of a law broken for well, living your life! A decision for war was made, and Donovan and his wife knew what was on the line, meaning they may not make it. I found this character development very commendable. Despite what they could lose, they cared more on what they could gain! This book brought on a lot of feelings, a lot of action, hardship, and of course suspense. I was not sure what would turn out as I turned the pages. The author is very gifted at all that they do! I was engaged and wanting to know more, the author doesn’t give away what could happen, they keep you in suspense and to keep reading. I seriously love this series and the writing of this very amazing and gifted author!

I loved the first two books and I highly recommend reading those two then reading this one for a good story development . I loved this one truly as I do this author. I highly recommend this series, this book, and this author! All are must reads. For sure, not ones to be passed up! Truly a remarkable read!

Love this author and all the writings and books that they create! I loved the first book in the series and now this is the second one. I could not help but fall head over in love. I swear this book truly scored a touch down with my heart! There was so much to this book, it was absolutely amazing from start to finish!

I loved watching things progress and what they were between Tia and Bridger. I loved how it was not smooth sailing at first glance There were things between them, that went well, quite deep actually. I really felt for them at different times. I felt emotions, happiness, anger, all at the same time on various occasions. I loved the sports aspect to this book as well. I love when romance mixes with sports, it brings to realism out and helps the story play out! I loved the writing, and the descriptive use on the words the author had used! This book was impossible not to love. I am so glad I got to enjoy it! Loved it!

Amazing book that everyone should experience in my humble opinion! I could not get enough of this book. I seriously am squealing with delight as I type this! A must read book! Highly recommend!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the 4th book in a fantastic contemporary romance series that I have loved every book so far. Book 4 is just as good, if not better than the previous three, all of which were 5 star reads in my opinion.
In this series we are getting the stories of 5 guys who are named as the Titans of Manhattan, all successful billionaires in their chosen fields. This time we are getting the story of Jonas Courtland, major hotel developer who has absolutely no inclination to join his three friends in committing to just one woman. Well, that is until Mackenzie Broderick comes back into his life. Mackenzie is the preachers daughter who he seduced at high school as part of a bet with his friends. Little did he know just how much his actions had changed her life.
I loved reading Mackenzie and Jonas’ story. It’s quite angsty, which I love. Watching Mackenzie, who is determined to hate Jonas, fight the feelings she still has for him, makes for some great reading. I was really gripped by their story and hated real life for getting in the way and making me put this book down.
We still have one more titan to go in this series and I can say that I’ll be very sad to see this series end. I’ll just have to read it all again sometime.
