The Misery House is the first book in The House on the Hill series by David Duane Kummer. This book marks the start of a three-book series that promises lots of chills. This story had me intrigued from the moment I saw the cover and I didn’t have to know anything else before I snapped up a copy and dove right in to discover what happens. This has all the ingredients that I love to find in an engrossing story… -psychological thriller -peaceful small town -small-minded townsfolk -prejudices -a creepy old house -urban legends -fear -tension -horror -high stakes -investigation -sinister feel -intensity -mystery -suspense The only thing that I felt would have made this even better was I would have liked the story to have had a bit better flow, as it did seem to get bogged down at times which gave it a choppy feel. But this ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that will lead us into the next book- so I am intrigued to continue the story in Book #2. Happy Reading…

When Magic Calls: A Collection of Modern Fairy Tales by Caitlin Berve is a YA fantasy fairytale retelling collection that provides an enchanting read. This is my first book by Ms. Berve, so what better way to get a feel for her work than a book with lots of short stories to explore. As you would expect from fairytale retellings, this is woven with magic, the paranormal, curses, a little mythology, imagination, fate & destiny, action, adventure, drama, twists, and emotion. Ms. Berve has cleverly crafted her stories in such a way that they are quite unique from the ‘originals’. There are also some illustrations sprinkled through the book too, that add to the charm of the collection. If you love fairytale retelling, short quick and easy reads, and originality, then this might just be the book for you. Happy Reading…

Hole In the Rock by Rebecca Bischoff is a fun adventure story aimed at middle grade aged children (8 to 12 years old). We follow Lizza as she learns some hard lessons about choices, making mistakes, consequences/repercussions, taking responsibility, communication, family, friendship, sticking together, and forgiveness. The Book of Hours (Coin/Hours Duology Book #2) by Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra is an intriguing mystery with suspense, danger, obsession, drama, tension, emotion, threats, action, agendas, romance, challenges, 2nd chances, greed, high stakes, and more. This isn’t my first read from Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra, but my first in this duology- so I was keen to see what lay between these covers. You don’t need to have read the first book in the duology to understand what is going on here. Although, having said that, it has piqued my curiosity and I am interested to find out what happened there, so I will probably hunt down a copy of ‘The Coin’ to explore in the near future. While I did like the mystery, suspense, and obsession part of the story, Gabriella’s ‘voice’/internal dialogue really frustrated me no end. I can’t exactly pinpoint why, but it put me off right from the beginning, and I had to force myself to keep reading to find out how everything played out in the end. But, because I really enjoyed “Hanging Softly in the Night’, one of Ms. Alonso-Sierra’s other books, I have decided to re-read this book again in a few weeks to see if I still feel the same way, or instead, I may discover that I was just having an ‘off’ reading day with this book…. so, stay tuned. The Finding is the first book in the Berrycreek Heights series and debut novel by A.M. Porto. This is a superb YA/NA romantic suspense with dark tones, tragedy, secrets, pain, heartache, danger, agendas, intrigue, emotion, twists, chemistry, violence, obsession, and more. There are some darker subject matters/themes through the story that might be triggering for some readers, so if you have triggers, please be aware of this before diving in… This book grabbed me right from the get-go, and when I was done, I went looking for more from the author, as I hadn’t read anything by them before…. and was even more impressed to discover that this is the authors debut novel. I wasn’t expecting something so engrossing and polished to be a debut novel. If this compelling book is anything to go by, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of A.M. The Sisterhood of Secrets is the fourth book in The Gods’ Scion series by Winnifred Tataw. As this follows from previous books I highly recommend reading the first three books before starting on this one- as there is a continuing storyline here with important information contained in the previous books that you should know in order to avoid feeling a little lost or confused in any way. This is a fantasy adventure with action, secrets, twists, emotion, sci-fi elements, gods, magic, betrayal, danger, mystery, mythology, astrology, powers, intrigue, interesting world-building, romance, and complex characters. Ms. Tataw certainly turned up the tension in this story, putting her characters, and me, through some intense moments- making this instalment the best of the bunch. As I have mentioned with the previous books, Ms. Tataw has created an intricate world with unique characters, lore, culture, and beliefs. There are magical, fantasy, and sci-fi elements, which are all woven around things we are more familiar with- which makes the story all the more believable and relatable. I also appreciated the substantial reference guide at the end of the book, which was full of interesting and helpful information. What has Ms. Tataw got planned for us next? Happy Reading…

Colour me a happy little bookworm right now. This right here is pure paranormal perfection!! One of my top three books for the year so far!!! All the stars!!!! Forbidden Blood is the spellbinding fourth instalment in The Shadow Chronicles by C.R Robertson. I devoured the first three books and they immediately hit my favourites list, so to say I was excited to get my hands on this fourth instalment is a bit of an understatement. I shoved everything else I was reading aside, and plunged right in to submerge myself in the story. I was so engrossed in everything that it only took me a couple of hours to read it as I practically inhaled it. I got to the end and turned around and started it again- it was THAT GOOD!!! I had such high expectations for this book, as I adored the previous books (well lets be honest here, I have read and adored ALL Ms. Robertsons books) so this had a lot to live up to. But, again, Ms. Robertson didn’t disappoint conjuring an incredibly riveting read that has taken my addiction to C.R Robertson’s work to a whole new high- but it’s an addiction I have no intention of quitting any time, ever! This is definitely another jewel to add to Ms. Robertson’s crown. Even though this is the fourth book in the series, it could be read as a stand alone if you wished. But in saying that, you would be seriously missing out on some spellbinding reading if you didn’t read the first three books- plus there is some continuing story arc as well as some shared timeline and other details that you will want to have on board to be able to fully appreciate this exciting instalment, and the series as a whole. This is Kimber and Fabian’s story- we met Kimber previously as she is Tasha’s younger sister (Tasha and Levi’s story was in the previous three books). Kimber has never felt like she belonged. Always felt like she wasn’t ‘enough’. Always felt like she lived in the shadow of her older, more talented and capable sister. But fate has had its own plan for her all along, and the time has come for her destiny to be unleashed. Get set, because Kimber’s world is about to take a very intriguing turn. Add a swoony, smouldering, mysteriously sexy man to the mix, and the sparks fly. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, adrenaline fuelled, paranormal romance, with a complex, multi-layered, and addictive storyline. The story is incredible, with vampires, shifters, Lycans, magic, different realms, demon hellspawn, witches, sizzling chemistry, politics, agendas, drama, danger, secrets, paranormal beings, battle/fight scenes, violence, adventure, sizzling encounters, fated mates, forbidden romance, and incredibly high stakes. Again, I absolutely love Ms. Robertson’s take on Vampire lore, her imagination knows no bounds, and tells a very compelling and exciting story. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!!! Seriously, if you love fantasy, paranormal romance, or just love being immersed in a spellbinding adventure- then you will really want to get your hands on this book/series, STAT! You really won’t be disappointed! But prepared for the massive heat wave and the addiction that will come with it!! I am so excited to see what comes next…. Book #5 can’t come quickly enough!!! Twisted Oath is the first book in the Bound By Blood Series by A.S Roberts. It is a fantastic tense contemporary mafia romance with intrigue, suspense, action, drama, danger, dark tones, revenge, intensity, chemistry, sizzle, connection, heartache, obstacles, secrets, lies, mafia politics, agendas, plots, pain, and so much more. Gah! A.S. Roberts has done it again- she had me hooked right from the beginning and held me in her thrall the whole way through. She hit this one out of the park! Ms. Roberts is a talented storyteller, and this story is testament to that fact- and is another feather in her cap. I loved everything about this story and characters (even if I wanted to throttle them at times). Serafina and Salvatore have been through so much, over such a long period of time- they really are perfect for each other. I was glued to the pages to ensure that fate did the right thing by them….. I love this first book and can’t wait to continue the series- Bring on Book #2!!!! Highly Recommended! Happy Reading…

A Match Made in Montana is the second book in The Millers of Marietta series by Elsa Winckler. This is the first book that I have read by Ms. Winckler so I really wasn’t sure of what to expect from one of her stories, but now that I have read one, I will certainly be adding her other books to my TBR list. This is a fun, small town, second chance, contemporary romance with humour, banter, emotion, family, chemistry, spice, taking a chance on love, and finding love unexpectedly. Even though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone if you want. I hadn’t realised that it was the second book in the series when I snapped up a copy, and now that I have read it I will definitely be going back to read Book #1 before continuing with the rest of the series. It follows the Miller siblings who have moved to small town Marietta and the new beginnings that brings. The characters are wonderful, fully developed individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks and flaws- and who are quite endearing. The story itself is a sweet, heartfelt, and romantic- with just a sprinkle of drama to keep things interesting. Annie Miller’s owns the new bed and breakfast in Marietta, Craig O’Sullivan is a marketing expert who is in town for a family wedding. But his meddling Aunt puts her matchmaking hat on which results in Craig helping Annie with a marketing plan for the B & B. They certainly have a great connection, but their lives are in different parts of the country- so a HEA is impossible. Right? But, the heart wants what the heart wants, so will they take a chance on love and the chance to forge a future together? This is well worth the read to find out. A charming story… Happy Reading…

Cruel Start is Book #4.5 in the Hidden Valley Elite series by Isla Vaughn. Wow- this series just keeps getting more intriguing and angstier with each new addition. As with the other books in the series it is a New Adult Bully romance, with a surprise pregnancy element, chemistry, spice, angst, drama, friendship, intrigue, emotion, family drama/dynamics, secrets, fear, and lies. This is the prequel to Aspen and Phoenix’s story, a novella length morsel to whet the appetite- which made for a quick and intriguing read. Aspen and Phoenix’s story continues in the next two books- ‘Cruel Hate’ (Book #5) and ‘Cruel Love’ (Book #6)- so I can’t wait to lay my hands on them to find out how their story unfolds from here. Even though this is book #4.5 in the series, it could be read as a standalone if you wanted, being the first book in Aspen and Phoenix’s story. But, having said that, I highly recommend reading the previous books before starting on this one as I feel that knowing what happened there will definitely enhance your reading experience of this story. The previous books help lay the foundations of the series, as well as giving character introductions, backstories, and other ‘groundwork’, which having on board will definitely help your understanding and appreciation of each instalment, as well as the Hidden Valley Elite series, as a whole. Shalom Israel by Melissa Lavi is a fun, illustrated ode to Israel. It is a bit of an adventure through Israel, in pictures and verse. The photographs contained in the book are beautifully captured and really bring Israel to ‘life’ on the pages. With illustrated characters immersed in every scene that help guide us on the ‘tour’. From beaches to deserts, farm gardens to the Dead Sea, the modern to the ancient- this book shows every colourful, historical, diverse, cultural, picturesque, and vibrant detail. Grand Slam is the third book in the Ground Rule Series by Bree Kraemer. This is a sublime contemporary sports romance with a bit of an opposites attract element, drama, angst, chemistry, and emotion. As expected, this story made my heart feel every detail- experiencing every high and low right beside the characters as the story unfolded. Ms. Kraemer has a talent for heartfelt stories- and always manages to pack a lot of heart and soul into her books. While also crafting endearing characters you feel you ‘know’ and want to hang out with- even if they frustrate the death out of you from time to time. This is the third book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. But having said that, I highly recommend reading the other books in the series as well because they are equally as good. I’m not sure if this third book is the final in the series, as there is no mention of a fourth book (yet). But I sure hope there is more coming… Happy reading.

Twisted Eros is the first book in the Modern Mythica series and debut novel by Aria Skylar. This is a retelling of the Eros and Psyche myth with a modern twist, some darker elements, plots, agendas, chemistry, sizzle, drama, angst, family, and more. Kay’s life revolves around business. She has no time for anything else. Her sisters practically force her to take some much-needed time off, suggesting an ‘abduction’ experience for some no-strings fun. But with the abduction comes plenty of unexpected twists for Kay- and things soon take a bit of a kinky, dramatic, and intriguing turn. I enjoyed reading the start to this new series which looks set to be both fun, and a little twisted. Looking forward to ‘Seducing Dionysus” (Book #2). Happy Reading…

Brutal Nights is the fourth book in the Hidden Valley Elite series by Isla Vaughn. It is a New Adult (High School) bully romance, with plenty of engrossing details, an enemies-to-lovers element, angst, drama, secrets, jealousy, friendship, lies, intrigue, chemistry, steam, emotion, dark games, agendas, danger, and more. This series just gets better with each new instalment, and this conclusion to Damon and Skylar’s story had me in its grip the whole way through. So much has happened, but Ms. Vaughn doesn’t take it easy on them- and toyed with my emotions in the process. As this is the fourth book in the series, and the second part to Skylar and Damon’s story, I highly recommend reading the rest of the series before starting on this book, or at the very least, read Book #3 so you are up to date on their little saga- and can jump into this book without feeling like you have missed something. A Toast For Laurent is the first book in the Vine Valley series by Theresa Paolo. It is a small town second chance romance with friendship, family, drama, danger, chemistry, spice, finding love unexpectedly, and emotion. There was also a little intrigue and drama, which definitely added an extra element of tension and interest to the whole story. Twenty years ago Laurent and Phoebe made a promise to marry each other if they were both still single when they reached forty. So, after all those years Phoebe is back and intent on seeing it through. But what does Laurent think of the plan, especially after the pain she caused? What happens makes for a fun read. A Way Out is the second book in the Rock Star series by Tami Lund. It is a wonderful rockstar romance with plenty of chemistry, drama, angst, challenges, and emotion. I didn’t expect to like this story as much as I did, I thought it would be a good palate-cleanser between ‘meatier’ reads- but proved me wrong on that front and was ‘more’ than expected. Ms. Lund surprised me with an engrossing story that had more depth and development than I was anticipating- and has left me with a taste for more and made me want to explore more of Ms. Lund’s work. Lucky for me, she has quite an extensive catalogue of work for me to binge through. This is the second book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone without feeling lost, confused, or like you are ‘missing’ something. Having said that though- it has made me curious about what happened previously, so I will definitely be going back and reading the previous two books (prequel and Book #1), before continuing with the rest of the series. The Master of Demise by Nadija Mujagic is a bit of a dark, chilling psychological thriller with plenty of mystery, suspense, drama, intrigue, twists, secrets, obsession, revenge, violence, betrayal, murder, pain, shocking developments, and more. It isn’t my first read by this author- but is definitely my top pick out of her stories. This proved to be a thought-provoking story, and had me following along trying to figure out what was going on. And for the most part it was gripping. But it wasn’t as dark as I had thought, and I wasn’t quite on the edge of my seat the whole way through- but it was definitely intriguing, and had some gripping, twisted moments- but maybe just a little more predictable than I had hoped for. But, still worth the read, nonetheless. Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Mujagic does next. Happy Reading…

She isn’t too happy about it, but there is a huge ‘business deal’ at stake- plus she isn’t given much choice on the matter. Little does she know that her trip to New Orleans is about to turn her world upside down- changing everything she thought she knew- about pretty much everything. This story is about fated mates, soul mates reconnecting after centuries apart. It is about the power of love and fighting the forces that wish to keep you apart. This is an original paranormal second chance romance with vampires, the supernatural, drama, adventure, secrets, agendas, ancient evil, danger, intrigue, mystery, and fate. I have to be honest and say that the author pretty much had me hooked from the moment I saw ‘vampire’ in the blurb and really enjoyed their take on vampire lore. Sacrifice Bunt is the second book in the Ground Rule Series by Bree Kraemer. This is a superb contemporary sports romance with a bit of an enemies to lovers element, chemistry, sizzle, friendship, banter, humour, emotion, drama, angst, and more. As expected from Ms. Kraemer- Zara and Noah pulled me in right from the beginning and had me fully invested in them and the outcome of their story. Bring on Book #3! Happy reading.

My Goodbye Girl by Anna Gomez is an angsty and emotional women’s fiction story about star-crossed lovers, and is not your ‘typical’ romance. The story spans several years as the two MCs continue to come together only to be pulled apart- and we follow along on all their highs and lows. I was intrigued by the premise of the story- a practical and analytical scientist meets a more fanciful romance author- their chemistry draws them together, and connection and developing feelings ensue. But they have personal and professional obstacles that keep drawing them apart. What happens makes for an angsty and interesting read. I really wanted to love this book more than I did, as I just couldn’t connect with the characters the way I had hoped to. But I will shelve this book to read again in a few weeks to see if I still feel the same way, or maybe discover that I was just having an ‘off’ reading day during this first read-through. Rise of the Hunter is the fourth book in the Blood Prophecy series by Barb Jones. This is an original paranormal story with witches, vampires, demons, angels, Hawaiian shamans/culture/history/gods, the supernatural, good vs evil, plots, agendas, vengeance, magic, mythology, drama, action, adventure, suspense, mystery, intrigue, tension, mysteriousness, prophecy, twists, and danger. This book focuses on the Tall Dark Man (from the series), as well as the return of the main characters from the previous books- as Ms. Jones weaves an intriguing tale that was made even more interesting by injecting some of her personal history/culture into her story. Even though this is the fourth book in the Blood Prophecy series, it is also the first book in a trilogy focusing on the Tall Dark Man, so I am interested in seeing where we go from here. Having said that, I Highly recommend reading the previous books before starting on this one as there is a lot of information and backstory that you will probably need in order to save any confusion here as the character introductions and other relevant details are contained in those previous books. Again, as with Ms. Jones other books, there is a LOT going on in the story, making for a interesting read- BUT with the story being told from so many perspectives (at least 18 individuals POV’s) plus all the time jumps, made for a bit of a jumbled, and at times, confusing read. The transitions were a bit choppy which added to the unsteady feel. I think the story would have been better if the ‘information’ was provided from much fewer perspectives, and the ‘historical’ details/stories were provided through the ‘current’ dialogue instead of all the time jumps, I mean we jump through so many centuries, even as far back as the birth of Pele- Hawaiian Goddess-Hawaiian Creation, then visiting Nostradamus, ancient Hawaii, various cities/places in the present day, as well as jumping back to B.C. a few times, then back to ‘present day’, then back in time again, then forward again, and so on and so forth- which honestly just made me a little dizzy and added to the confusion- and just seemed to me to be more like haphazard info dumps. But the mysteriousness that Ms. Jones infused into her story definitely added to the overall intrigue and feel of the story- amping up some tension while adding interest. The story is set to continue, so I will have to wait to see what Ms. Jones has in store for us, in the future instalments. Happy Reading…

Holding Up the Sky by Lois Wickstrom is another of her cute children’s stories. It has bright, colourful, and interesting illustrations that accompany the story, which help to bring everything to life. This is a bit of an adventure with a few messages/lessons along the way. With some fantasy and a touch of drama, it makes for an engaging and fun read- feeding both the imagination, as well as imparting messages on kindness, cooperation, helpfulness, not to be fearful, and not jumping to conclusions or judging a book by its cover.

Falling Again is the third book in the Buckeye Falls series by Libby Kay. This is a charming contemporary romance with a small-town setting- a bit of a romcom with second chances, humour, chemistry, emotion, struggles, pressure, duty, responsibility, expectations, family, friendship, reconnecting, reigniting a spark, realising what’s important, and some drama. I have read a few of Ms. Kay’s books now and have enjoyed them all, and this was no exception and was just as sweet and heart-warming as I expected. On the surface Anthony and Natalie seem to have the perfect life, but you know what they say about appearances. Their marriage has been stagnating for a while now and the cracks are beginning to show. Anthony, being the Mayor of Buckeye Falls feels he has a lot to live up to considering his father was the former mayor- so Anthony is determined to ensure he exceeds all expectations. Natalie has the pressure of being wife, mother, and business owner. Holding it all together is exhausting. What happens when they get a chance to spend a week together at their lake house. Will they reconnect and rekindle their love? Well worth the read to find out. I love all the endearing quirky characters- they really bring the stories, and Buckeye Falls to life. Acting Counsel is the third book in the Kings of Screen series by Morgana Bevan. This is a fun contemporary romance with plenty of chemistry, steam, push-pull, angst, banter, humour, drama, forbidden romance, high stakes, and more. Catrina is a level-headed attorney who has to try and keep things professional when she discovers her celebrity fling is her new client. The no sleeping with clients rule is going to be tested to the max- especially when he doesn’t seem to have gotten the same memo. What happens makes for a very entertaining read. I’m really enjoying this series and can’t wait for the next instalment to land- Fashionably Fake (Book #4). Happy Reading…

The Messy Kids by Lois Wickstrom is a fun children’s storybook with interesting, bright, and colourful illustrations that help to bring the story to life. I found it to be a cute ‘adventure’ with lots of fun, aliens, a spaceship, and lessons about cleaning up after yourself. This is a bit of a quirky story with a touch of fantasy that proved to very engaging- feeding both the imagination, as well providing a few lessons along the way. Suitable for children aged 4 to 8. Ghosts of Alda is the second spell-binding book in The Obscured Throne Trilogy by Russell Archey. I am loving this fantastic series so much- after reading book one and developing a bit of an addiction for Mr. Archey’s work I couldn’t wait to continue what we started in the first instalment, so when this second instalment released, I put aside everything else I was doing/reading and plunged right in. This continues the intriguing adventure we began in the previous book- fully immersing us in a vividly detailed dark fantasy with a bit of a dystopian feel, plenty of action, drama, secrets, revelations, magic, agendas, mystery, suspense, emotion, and interesting characters- all woven into a rich, captivating, complex, and multi-layered plot. As with the first book, I love Mr. Archey’s epic storytelling talent, writing style, and his ability to completely capture my attention- immersing me so completely in his story that the ‘real world’ ceased to exist- and for me that is the mark of a truly skilled writer. He packs so much into his story, crafting an epic tale that came to life before my eyes as his world building skills are excellent- everything seemed so real and believable, it was easy to imagine everything he was describing, like it was playing out on a screen, not words written on a page. And as with the previous book, I can see this making a great movie or television series. The storyline is entirely unique, with lots of dramatic developments and other clever and unique touches that made the story quite gripping- a real page turner. It is told from multiple perspectives, which gives the story extra depth as well as added intrigue. I love the cast of character, each one is cleverly crafted into a fully developed individual with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws. They definitely were the ‘stars’ of the show here. I was fully invested in them and the outcome of their story. As I mentioned previously, I am hooked on this trilogy now and can’t wait to see where we go from here. If you love fantasy with a darker, edgier feel- then this is definitely the series for you- but I highly recommend reading the first book before starting on this one as there is a lot of important information, storyline, and character details that you should know before you embark on this second instalment to fully appreciate the adventure. Walk Off is the first book in the Ground Rule Series by Bree Kraemer. Gah!! I love Bree Kraemer’s stories so much!! She always manages to pack so much heart, soul, and emotion into her book-s and her characters are just sublime. This second chance contemporary romance pulled me in right from the beginning and had me completely invested in the characters and their story. I couldn’t put it down and devoured it all in one sitting. A wedding is the last place Kyle expected to see Celia. Even after eight years, everything comes rushing back. What happens when secrets are revealed? With plenty of sizzle, secrets, lies, heartache, pain, unresolved emotions, drama, angst, chemistry, forgiveness, and hope- Kyle and Celia’s story had me burning the midnight oil so I wouldn’t go to sleep without knowing how things played out in the end. Can’t wait to continue this fantastic new series! Happy reading.
