Chris and the Pirates is the second book in The Adventures of Kris series by Art Blegen. Kris’s love of reading and vivid imagination means that she gets lost in her books and the stories they contain, getting pulled into all the adventures and experiencing everything alongside the ‘characters’. This time she is set for a bit of a pirate adventure, with islands, treasure, action, friendships, overcoming challenges, dealing with fear, being brave, a rescue mission, agendas, and dramatic developments. This is a intriguing children’s chapter book, that is aimed at children aged 10- 14 years. It was quite a fun read, but also has some lessons/facts to learn along the way. With sailing ships and sailors, to pirates, games, new friendships, songs, talking animals (Sammy the snake, Tammy the turtle, Jack the macaw, Michael the monkey king, and Stevie the sloth), beaches, jungle, swimming, dolphins, vivid world-building, and plenty of imagination, as well as a few small illustrations to head up each chapter, made this a very engaging story. Even though it is the second book in the series, it could be read as a standalone without feeling like you are missing anything, as from what I can gather, each book is a ‘self-contained’ adventure starring Kris. But, having said that I am curious to see what she gets up to in the other books, so I will be going back and reading the first book before continuing on with the series. Oscar and Emmy Foster Kittens is the eighth book in the Oscar and Emmy series by Terri Sabol. It is a uplifting children’s story that is woven around some really cute illustrations. Charlie and Abby (twins) have been volunteering at an animal shelter and discuss the possibility of fostering animals with their mother. The family discusses the responsibilities that fostering would bring, and then the opportunity to foster (3) 4 day-old kittens comes along and they embrace the chance to help. We follow along with the twins, as well as Oscar and Emmy (the family cats) as they help care for the kittens. Fostering the kittens from 4 days old to 12/13 weeks when they are put up for adoption. Along the way, we also learn about kitten care, reasons you should foster, facts about fostering/volunteering, and much more. I thought it was a really heartwarming story, especially when they find the perfect fur-ever families for the kittens at the end. So sweet. Happy Reading…

The Better Man is the superb second book in the Silver Buckle Brides series by Laurie Lewis. After reading most of Ms. Lewis’s books now, and having loved ‘Cross Country Christmas’, the first book in the series, there was no question as to whether I would want to read this book or not, instantly snapping up a copy as soon as I saw it had released… I love all of Ms. Lewis’s books, and I love how she infuses so much heart and soul into her stories, leaving them brimming with emotion. Her characters are always so well developed and have so much depth to them, they really bring the story to life and deliver all the ‘feels’. Looking forward to the next release from Ms. Lewis! Fay’s Kindness Parade is the fifth book in The Adventures of Cray series by G Pa Rhymes. This is such a cute series of books and I have really enjoyed reading the charming books with my young grandchildren- Cray, Hay, Gray, Fay, and Ray have such fun adventures, and always learn something along the way. This story sees Cray the crab set off on an adventure with Fay the turtle when she sets off on her annual migration. All their other friends had plans, and Fay didn’t want Cray to be alone, so she invited him along. They set out and immediately begin doing small acts of kindness, making new friends along the way. Through their acts of kindness, they spread love and good vibrations, and as their new friends join them, a parade is formed. This was such a lovely story that also imparts messages of being kind, helping others, teamwork, friendship/making friends, compassion, empathy, contributing to the community, enriching lives, and facts about turtle migration. Again, this fun story is accompanied by lots of lovely, bright, colourful, interesting, and engaging illustrations — which help to bring the whole story to life. G. Pa Rhymes tells another really cute tale in his clever rhyming/rapping storytelling style, which adds an extra element of interest to the whole story. Easy to read. Educational. Fun. Interesting. A cast of endearing animal friends. Wonderful illustrations. Cute story. Well worth the read. Finders Keeper, Cowboy is the first book in the Match Made in Montana series by new to me author, Rachelle Paige Campbell. Because this is the first book that I have read by Ms. Campbell, I really didn’t know what to expect from one of her stories- but it sounded sweet, and I thought it might make a good ‘palate- cleanser’ between some of the more thrilling/darker reads I have been devouring of late. So I took a chance, grabbed a copy, and jumped right in. What I discovered is a contemporary small-town enemies to lovers romance with a ‘clean’ storyline, a western feel with cowboys and ranches, forced proximity, secrets, drama, angst, emotion, slow-burn, and family dynamics. I must be honest here, as these two characters really frustrated me to no end. They really rubbed me the wrong way, and because of that I found it really difficult to connect with them and get invested in the outcome of their story like I was hoping to. But as this is the start of a new series, I am curious to see what Book #2 may offer- so stay tuned. Happy Reading…

The Closer: An Enemies to Lovers Dark Romance is the third and final book in The Hustlers Trilogy by Rowan Rossler. Urgh! This was such a bittersweet read for me- on one hand, I was excited to get the next instalment of the series and find out more about June, and Dallas….. but on the other hand, I didn’t/don’t want to say goodbye to this superb series, or characters. Seriously though, this series just seems to have gotten better with each new instalment, and that is testament to Ms. Rossler’s storytelling and writing talents. I really did love everything about the books/series- and I’m sad that this is the last – but excited to see what Ms. Rossler might have up her sleeve on offer next! This is a fantastic enemies to lovers contemporary romance with drama, suspense, chemistry, sizzle, tension, angst, past pain, dynamic characters, and much more. Again, as with the previous books, the characters were fully developed individuals, and the story was not only engrossing, but also sizzled off the pages. The author also managed to weave intrigue, drama, and more than a little tension into her storyline- which, again, made for an unputdownable read. June and Dallas have a complicated history that overshadows everything. June never wanted to see him, ever again, after what happened— but her budding business’s future is riding on her getting a major cash injection, which means having to face him again, with hat in hand. Mmmmmm awkward much! What ensues makes for a really great read. I definitely recommend this book, and the series- they are well worth the read. Looking forward to more from Ms. Rossler in the (near) future! Happy reading!

Code Dog by Lois Wickstrom is an intriguing little children’s adventure chapter book. Unlike most of her other books this doesn’t contain any illustrations, but is original and imaginative as I would have expected from Ms. Wickstrom. As I mentioned above, this is an intriguing adventure with plenty of mystery, action, investigation, suspense, sci-fi elements, a sprinkle of drama, high stakes, a time crunch, lessons, investigation, and a little danger. When A 200year-old time capsule goes missing and an intriguing map falls into their hands, Timmy, Beth, and Arthur find themselves thrust into an adventure that non of them will soon forget. Add in a special dog named Cody who understands and uses morse code- and this story takes off. What happens makes for a fun read. It is a much longer story than any of her picture books, so it’s great for reading a chapter or two before bedtime. Happy Reading…

Planting Seeds: Growing Mindful Children Through Yoga by Janice Pratt and Lenora Degen is aimed at giving parents and teachers some different concepts to engage children and teach them some valuable life skills. The book ‘plants’ different concepts on using movement, science, nature, and growth to help a child find focus, concentration, mindfulness, compassion, empathy, and breathing better. This is done through Yoga techniques, planting seeds, affirmations, games, moving activities, mindfulness activities, and even songs. We learn about Yoga principles, Yoga movements, Plant growth, and much more. I think this is a great tool that has a different approach to raising healthy children- body, mind, and spirit. This is an historical romance with a reverse age gap, femdom, chemistry, sizzle, tension, tender romantic scenes, fate, societal norms/customs of the time, insta-lust, love letter/lust letter exchanges, agendas, passion, drama, angst, challenges, and emotion. Charlotte never imagined being a widow at the age of 30, but there she is alone in an age where responsibility and societal expectations seem quite daunting. Stars In the City (Stars in the City Series) by Krysten Lindsay Hager is a YA romance story- with all the teenage drama, friendship, angst, jealousy, romance, and emotion you could expect from a YA romance story. It also has some sweet moments that made even my old, jaded heart, flutter for a beat or two. As with the other books that I have read by Ms. Hager, this is a well-woven story, but definitely suited to a younger audience. If you love YA, romance, soap opera stars on the rise, emerging pop stars, basketball players, angsty teen drama, friendship, connection, first love, love-triangle-ish storylines, and sweet moments- then you will definitely want to add this to your TBR. Before You Say I Do by Marina Hanna is a contemporary romance with plenty of chemistry, steam, ‘ex’ drama, emotion, and just enough angst to keep things interesting. This was a fun read that had me invested right from the get-go. As expected from Ms. Hanna, it entertained me the whole way through. We follow Liam and Emma through their highs and lows, as their ‘one-night-stand’ turns into more- will they take a chance on love? Well worth the read to find out. Charming Chapter is the first book in the Boomer Babes Book Club series, and debut novel by Lori Haas. It is a sweet women’s fiction story about finding love again later in life. As this is my first read by Lori Haas, I really didn’t know what to expect from one of her stories- but the cover caught my attention, and the story promised something a little different to what I have been reading of late, so I took a chance, snapped up a copy, and set off to see what happens. What I discovered is exactly what the title promised, a charming tale capturing a later-in-life romance (clean), friendship, finding love after loss, interesting older characters, sweet + heartwarming details, fun, challenges, and just enough drama to keep things interesting. The characters were really well-developed individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws- making the story quite realistic and entirely believable. It was great seeing that it’s never too late for love. And the friendships were a fun addition, adding extra interest to the overall storyline. If you love women’s fiction, clean romances, and stories with charming mature characters finding love unexpectedly — then this is definitely the book for you… Looking forward to Book #2, ‘Surprising Chapter’ (due to release in June 2024)… Hapy Reading…

Mermaid Tails by Suzanna Lynn is such a wonderful children’s fantasy book (aimed at children aged 3 – 12 years old), with divine illustrations that really capture the imagination. Along with the lyrical style of the writing, it all results in pulling the reader into the magical world of mermaids. This story is a little different, as it doesn’t just give us the ‘traditional’ mermaid/s we are used to seeing. Instead, it helps us imagine what different types of mermaids there might be, and what their tails might look like. The delightfully cute illustrations really do make the story come to life, capturing a plethora of different mermaid tails to inspire the imagination. There is also an educational component to the story, with each page offering a ‘fun fact’ about marine life, the sea, and morsels of mermaid legends. This adds an extra element of interest and fun to the overall reading experience. What a fun little adventure this turned out to be. It was so enchanting, engaging, and cute. Porter and Midge: Paws and Responsibilities: A Kid’s Guide to Welcoming a New Dog (Porter and Midge Series) by Jennie Chen & Giselle Nevada is a great addition to this cute series. It is a perfect read for any child/family looking at welcoming a furry friend into their lives. The illustrations that accompany the story really help to reinforce the ‘lessons’ in the book. They are cute, interesting, and colourful which helps to keep the focus on the story and educational components which help to teach children/families about the responsibilities of being a pet owner/guardian. These are important lessons to learn and know, because a pet comes with a lot of responsibility, and this helps to guide the reader in knowing what those responsibilities are. There is more to being a dog owner than merely supplying food and shelter. This covers everything from puppy care, to grooming, regular vet visits, training, socialization, and choosing the right dog breed to suit your family. As with the other books in the series, this is a fun, quick, and easy read that has also has a great rhyming rhythm, a bit of a lyrical feel, that will help readers to connect with the messages. Echoing Hearts is the first book in The Echo series by C.R. Alam. This was the first book that I have read by this author, so I really didn’t know what to expect from one of her stories. But the Title and cover intrigued me, as did the promise of a bit of an angsty read- so, I snapped up a copy and dove right in. And I am so glad I did as I discovered an interesting contemporary romance with an enemies to lovers/love triangle element, with plenty of drama, angst, emotion, chemistry, family, friendship, jealousy, doubt, and finding love unexpectedly. The enemies to lovers/love triangle element definitely added an extra element of interest to the story. I did enjoy the story for the most part. It was a little slow to get going and did lag a little in places, but the chemistry between the characters, and emotion of the story, kept me turning the pages.
His Forever Muse (Book #2) 4.5 Stars
His Forever Muse is the second book in The Echo series by C.R. Alam. This is a captivating second-chance contemporary romance- a friends to lovers rockstar romance with a best friend’s sister element threaded through. Brandon is the front man for rock band ‘Canis Major’. His whole life revolves around his creativity and artistic expression- music, art, and tattoos. So when he loses his inspiration and his creativity begins to suffer, Brandon’s quest is to find something, well anything really, that will reignite his creative passion. This is where he encounters a blast from the past, in the form of Calliope Chen-Bisset…. will she become “His Forever Muse”? This is well worth the read to find out…. There’s plenty of emotion, chemistry, friendship, and overcoming past pain to take a chance on love.
Unexpected Entanglements (Book #3) 4 Stars
Unexpected Entanglements is the third book in The Echo series by C.R. Alam. This is another contemporary romance with a fake relationship element, an unexpected entanglement, chemistry, sizzle, emotion, angst, love, loss, grief, a little drama, danger, finding love unexpectedly, fate, banter, and more. Chris Sullens is about to have his world turned upside down when he not only finds himself offering to help plan a wedding out of the blue, he also can’t deny the connection that simmers between the stunning innkeeper/wedding planner and himself. But things take a very interesting turn when he then agrees to play her (fake) fiancé. So, get set as the sparks fly, chemistry sizzles, and things start to go awry. What happens definitely makes for an engrossing read.
Dangerous Rhythm (Book #4) 4.5 Stars
Dangerous Rhythm is the fourth book in The Echo series by C.R. Alam. I have really been enjoying this series, each book capturing my attention as the series just seems to be getting better and better with each new instalment. And this one is definitely my favourite of the series, so far. This story had me invested right from the get-go. Who doesn’t love a Rockstar/bodyguard romance. Well, this takes that and gives it a twist- as he’s the rockstar and she’s the bodyguard. Yeah, that got my attention too. When he witnesses a crime that puts him in the crosshairs of a psycho mob boss, thing take a dangerous turn. Her job is to make sure he stays safe. But as they are forced to flee, things heat up in more ways than one. What happens you may wonder. Well, this is definitely worth the read to find out.
As you can see there’s plenty here to keep you engrossed. Each book in the series focuses on its own ‘couple’, so they can be read as standalones if you wanted. But the stories have all, so far, revolved around the band, Canis Major, and/or their friends and family- in some way…… which gives plenty of captivating content to keep you flipping the pages, as well as providing additional details and storylines- which help to build depth, as well as paint a bigger picture’…… so this Box Set is the perfect way to indulge. Four books for the price of one. #winning If you love romance, rockstars, family, friendship, emotion, struggles, angst, some danger, intrigue, and plenty of sizzle- then this is definitely the series for you. I really loved this book, it is a little different from her other books- but with the same sexy flare we have come to expect from Ms. Alexander. Cy is on an undercover mission at his family’s theme park. He has a job to do and there is quite a bit at stake. But he’s thrown off-kilter when he meets the delectable Jolie. Jolie has a few secrets of her own. She works two jobs trying to make ends meet- taking care of her responsibilities is her number one priority. Sparks fly and the heat rises. But what happens when secrets are revealed? You really need some Sugar & Spice in your life to find out all the delicious details for yourself! Detective Dylan and the Hunt For Home Plate is the second book in A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series by M.J. Murray. This is a children’s chapter book story with a bit of a mystery, crime and investigation elements, lessons/Learning, family, friendships, and more. This engaging tale inspires problem solving- including math’s activities, expanding vocabulary, promoting fluency & comprehension, and more. As with the first book, this has an easy to read and understand plot which captures the imagination by engaging the reader with a fun story that contains some ‘learning’ opportunities along the way. There are also some fun (black and white) illustrations sprinkled throughout that help fuel the imagination- but would have been even more impactful and engaging if they had been in colour. Detective Dylan, his sister Emily, and trusty dog Theodore take on another ‘case’ when the bases from the baseball field go missing. What happened to them? Will Dylan and co get to the bottom of the mystery to find what happened to the bases? This is well worth the read to find out and makes for a fun read. This is aimed at children 5 – 9 who are perhaps just starting to read ‘chapter books’ on their own, or with help- so the story contains a few ‘harder’ words to challenge them as they read (Reading Tier 2). It is a romantic suspense with tension, mystery, danger, investigation, crime boss – graduate student – PI dynamic, chemistry, angst, emotion, secrets, and dramatic developments. What should have been the opportunity of a lifetime for graduate student Evelyn Stevenson turns sour quite quickly- propelling her into a situation she could never have imagined. The Changed Man is the fourth book in The Olympic Peninsula series by Cat Treadgold. It is a superb addition to the series, which just seems to get better and better with each new instalment. It is a contemporary romance with a bit of a ‘family saga’ feel, plenty of emotion, heart & soul, wonderful characters, family dynamics, secrets, drama, angst, layers/facets, interconnected details, complications, slow-burn, intrigue, mystery, and more. This is Jake O’Connell’s story, he’s the O’Connell’s brother (Joe Bob, David, and Teresa have had their own stories in the previous three books). His story definitely grabbed my heartstrings, and plucked them, hard- making for a sweet, heartwarming, emotional, and memorable read As with the previous instalments, Ms. Treadgold has woven a great story with complex characters, dramatic developments, tension, and emotional touches- which made it really easy to connect with the characters, and allowed me to completely invest in their story- while adding her own special touches that imbue an extra element of charm to the overall story/series. Oh, and I love this cover, it’s my favourite of the series, so far…. Looking forward to Book #5, The Fallen Man- which is Edward’s story. Happy Reading…

Managing Mischief is the second book in the Shattered Embrace series by Alyndra Quinn. It is the second book in Ashton and Zachary’s story, so I highly recommend reading the first before diving into this one, as there is important story details, character introductions, and other pertinent information contained there that I think you should know in order to full appreciate this instalment. In Book #1, we met Ashton as she applies to join an exclusive BDSM club, and she doesn’t realise, until it’s too late, that the CEO of the company she has just been hired to consult for, is also the head of the same BDSM club she has just applied to…. things get interesting very quickly…. Not to mention that he’s also her best friend’s brother…. So in this instalment we get a ‘closer look’ at the ‘club scene’ and all those spicy details. We also get more questions answered that were left hanging from the previous book. It is a steamy, contemporary romance, with a best friend’s brother element, palpable chemistry, banter, a BDSM club, Dom/sub dynamics, Alpha type male, some angst, spicey encounters, emotion, and a little drama- which made for another engrossing read. The next instalment, Discovering Desire will give us Derek’s story (Zachary’s brother, who is also Ashton’s best friend). Can’t wait for that. Happy Reading

Give Us Bad Boys and Billionaires by L.M Mountford is an omnibus of short novellas — a Boxset of previously released stories which have been dusted off, renamed, and then put together into this collection. At first I was excited to see this- as I saw a ‘new’ cover and ‘new’ titles to thirteen stories…. But once I dove in, I must admit I was a little disappointed to find stories that I have read many times previously, in one guise or another. But just to make sure I wasn’t mistaken, I read the collection in its entirety and confirm that they are indeed the same stories we have read, not only individually, but also as part of a few ‘other’ anthology/collections. The stories are short but steamy – covering genres from friends to lovers, age gap, second chances, temptations, erotic fantasies, forbidden liaisons, secrets, menage, romance, drama, angst, BDSM, and even a couple of paranormal tales. This boxset is a very quick and easy read and because each of the ‘books’ is so short. If you are short on reading time, this is one of those collections that you can pick it up and down without feeling like you are left ‘hanging’ or will ‘miss’ anything. There isn’t a huge amount of depth, or complexity to the stories or characters, but if you are in need of a little smexxxy in your life, then you’ll probably love what you find between these covers. I know I say this every time I have read this author’s work, but I really wish these stories were expanded more, so we got more depth and development to fully ‘explore’ the story and invest in the characters fully. I really want them to be more ‘meatier’.

Family Ties Family Lies by Jacqueline Boulden is the first book that I have read by this author, so I really didn’t know what I could expect from one of her stories when I snapped up a copy to explore. I took the chance, and I am glad that I did, as I found an intriguing women’s fiction mystery- a bit of a multi-faceted smalltown family saga/drama, with plenty of emotion, long-held secrets, lies, suspense, tension, intrigue, family dynamics, love, trauma, pain, angst, forgiveness, investigation, and dramatic developments. Rose’s life is turned upside down in more ways than one. By going ‘home’ to care for her mother, she stumbles on some intriguing information. Things take a mysterious turn and Rose is about to discover some long-held secrets. The story takes us on an emotional journey- a real little mystery, with crime and investigation that has far more going on that first meets the eye. What happens made for a great read that had me engrossed to whole way through. I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Ms. Boulden’s books to read in the future. Happy Reading

“ I died hundreds of years ago, though the strange thing was, I had no idea how or who killed me and I wasn’t going to waste my time researching my demise. The evening I was reborn, it was pouring rain mixed with sleet that felt like itty bitty daggers stabbing my naked skin. It was painful and I was freezing, which only heightened the amount of pain the inclement weather caused. I had to get out of the cold and found shelter in a barn kilometers from where I emerged from the tree. Rampant emotions consumed me from frightened to confused to angry back to confusion. I had no idea how I got in that blasted tree and had no idea who or where I was. I was thankful that it was the middle of the night and no one was privy to my lack of dignity. Though, on the other hand, it would have been nice to have run into someone who could have offered me a coat or hot fire, anything to warm me up. To note, the tree is pretty busted, but one can use the excuse that it was the lightning that split it in all directions. But that’s not important, what’s important is I was startled awake the next morning to some kid screaming then hollering for his ‘Da’ – which gave me credence that this was a Scottish family and that I was in Scotland. The Scottish family was right, but the location wasn’t. In fact, I was in the Province of North Carolina and it was 1765. I’ve no idea how I got here or where I came from. I didn’t even know my name or had any memory. I was reborn, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, though the pile of ashes was a tree. ”
Hood of Sedna is the first book in the Stevie Capot Chronicles by Mina Sky. It is a paranormal story- with a steampunk/dystopian feel, urban fantasy, Fae, history, mystery, adventure, suspense, intrigue, dramatic developments, romance, secrets, discovery/revelations, humour, and emotion. The story ends leaving things to continue in Book #2, ‘Coveted Hood’. As expected from Ms. Skye, the story is well-woven, with an original take/lore that made for a captivating read- all wrapped into some fantastic world-building that really brought the whole story to life. The Archspawn – Pilgrimage & Prophecies is the first book in The Archcrusade series and debut novel by K.M. Hogenson. This is an epic, 89-chapter book- making for a massive read. It is a high fantasy quest with action, adventure, magic, paranormal beings (eg: mages, demons, vampires, shifters, warlocks), danger, dramatic developments, a multi-layered storyline, agendas, a touch of fate/destiny, prophecy, and darker elements that you might want to make yourself aware of before diving in, especially if you have triggers. There was just so much going on in this book that I am really having trouble choosing where to start with my review. So here goes…. Like I said this is a lengthy novel- 1350+ pages of story, 89 chapters, 172+ cast members (characters), over 30 individual POV’s to keep track of, and some very unusual character names to wrap our heads around. There was way too much going on here for me, making for a bit of a chaotic read- especially with so many different characters and perspectives to keep track of- so things did get confusing and muddled at times. While the plot was interesting, the plethora of perspectives, info dumps in some areas & lack of information in others, and the somewhat stilted dialogue (at times), really made for a choppy, lagging/dragging read. I really think that some of the individual perspectives/POV, especially the singular chapters, could have been condensed and that information passed on in some other, more streamlined way. While I appreciate the author’s passion, the heart and soul that they put into their work- I found that the issues I had made it difficult to connect with the characters and/or invest in the overall story. With so much to keep track of and get my head around, I just couldn’t find my ‘groove’ and lose myself in the story like I was really hoping to do. There were way too many things that interrupted the flow and/or pulled me out of the story. There were times I found my mind wandering because the story was lagging, so I repeatedly had to force myself to stay focused on what was going on. I feel with less POV’s and a few less chapters/pages, the story would have been far more engaging. I think a lot of these issues could have been picked up and sorted with more editing and several Beta reads. This is only my personal opinion though, and now looking at some of the other reviews, I seem to be the only one who has had any issues — So if you love an epic fantasy, with plenty of adventure and don’t mind the issues that I found- then this just might be what you are looking for. The story is set to continue in Book #2, so it will be interesting to see where the author takes us from here. Happy Reading

The Glow in Loretta’s Garden is the fifth book in the Loretta’s Insects series by Lois Wickstrom. This is another fun children’s illustrated storybook, full of interesting facts about insects- this time we learn about the lifecycle of fireflies. The added educational elements added an extra element of interest to the engaging adventure. As we discovered previously, Loretta loves insects, and this time she discovers some glowing larvae while digging in her flower bed. She puts them in an empty ant farm and watches them do interesting things. What happens when they finally hatch? You really should discover all the interesting details for yourself – because what happens makes for a fun read. This is not just a cute story, it also encourages children to learn while they read. I read this story with my grandson, but we wish the illustrations were better, as they are very simplistic and aren’t as bright, bold, or eye catching like a lot of Ms. Wickstrom’s other books- so they didn’t grab or hold his attention like the others have done. As with the other books in the series, the ‘new’ cover is great, but unfortunately the illustrations inside the book aren’t up to the same standard. With better illustrations, this would have been an even better story, in our opinion. The Hidden Present is the eighth book in the Invisible Magic Wand series by Lois Wickstrom. As with the rest of the series the story draws you in right from the get-go, grabbing your attention with the bright and interesting illustrations which accompany the cute storyline. Caspian’s unbirthday has come around again- but this time Caspian can’t find it and will need to search for it. Lucky he has the Inquisitive Indicator to help his investigation. And so, let the adventure begin…. This is another cute children’s story and a fun addition to series. It has bright and colourful illustrations, fun, educational elements/lessons, and a touch of whimsical fantasy. As with the other books in this series, it is a slightly quirky tale that proved to be quite engaging- feeding both the imagination, as well providing a few lessons along the way. Suitable for children aged 4 to 8. A Girl, Stuck is the third book in the Found Families series by new-to-me author, Kelly Elizabeth Huston. This has a bit of a romantic suspense vibe about it- mixed with woman’s fiction. The author has woven an angsty and emotional story full of drama, mystery, suspense, tension, hope, redemption, mafia, law enforcement, investigation, and darker elements. You may want to read the content warning before diving in. I have to be honest here and say that this cover really doesn’t do the book any justice (in my opinion). If I were browsing, looking for books, this cover would never have caught my attention, or even rated a second glance really. Because, if it were not for the book being recommended in our reading group, I would never have picked it up. A great cover really makes a difference, and I feel the author is missing out on capturing more attention. I also didn’t realise going into this book that it was the third book in the series, but thankfully it can be read as a standalone without feeling like I was missing anything important. But having said that, I will definitely be going back to read the first two books to find out what happened there and see if there are any interconnected details that flow through to this book, before continuing with the series. And after exploring the authors Goodreads page, I notice that there is no consistency with the covers in the series either- which again, I would have overlooked if I had been browsing and not specifically ‘hunting’. I don’t mind the cover for Book #1, it has some appeal- but the second one is definitely forgettable… sorry to say this because this author can write an engrossing story, and I feel like her books may not be getting the attention that they deserve due to forgettable/unappealing covers. Again, this is just my opinion, and the cover/s didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. The story is impactful and intriguing- and the character/s are well-developed individual/s with their own unique quirks and flaws. The character/s continued to develop and grow over the course of the story- adding an extra element of interest to the overall storyline. The Missing Red Envelopes by Yobe Qiu (illustrations by Kris Fulk) – is a cute children’s chapter book, a bit of a light-hearted mystery that pulls us into a fun tale full of cultural diversity celebrating the lunar new year, traditions, Chinese and Asian customs/culture/celebrations, adventure, imagination- and inspires curiosity while also promoting critical thinking. This book is mainly aimed at readers 7 – 12 years old. We Join sisters Lori and Weina as they unravel the mystery about the missing red envelopes- resulting in a fun and engaging little read. While I loved the story and thought the illustrations were cute, I think this would have been an even richer reading experience, and had a much bigger impact, if the illustrations had been a bit bigger and in colour- instead of the small black and white images sprinkled throughout. All the rich colours and vibrancy of the Chinese New Year celebrations, with the parades, Chinese Dragons, fireworks etc, would have been even better and more engaging in full colour, like her other books are.
