In The Midst of Omens is book one of The Legacy of Gilgamesh, by the talented Nicole Bailey. I did not know much about Gilgamesh prior to this, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to change how I imagine him now! Bailey did a beautiful job detailing all of his different personality complexities, his drive, HIM! I absolutely adored all the different character dynamics, relationships, and of course the romance! I definitely recommend this author, and look forward to finding more from her in the future!

This is the first book in the the Legacy of Gilgamesh series. This was really a great start to the series. It is full of action, adventure, romance, mythology, god and goddesses all woven together to create a very unique and captivating story. The author has done a great job of mixing historical elements into the fantasy and mythology which for me really brings the characters to life. The story was captivating from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. The ending has definately set you up for the next book which I am egar to read to carry on the adventure. I was unfamiliar with the stories of Gilgamesh. To be he has a lot of responsibility and huge sense of duty but he is also obsessed with leaving a legacy and wanting the be remembered to the point where he is unable to appreciate what he has achieved and the people around him. When Enkidu enters his life it becomes role to help him see this and also to bring him down and hble him a little. What will happen as Gilgamesh and Enkidu get closer. Will Gilgamesh find what he was missing in this stranger that became a friend. This is a romance as well as we see Gilgamesh’s feelings change for Enkidu and we leave about his wife’s partners. Both Gilgamesh and his wife love each other but you can tell it’s mainly in a friendship. They complement each other and they work well as a team and the fact they allow each other to find romance else where makes them stronger in my opinion. This story was complex but very captivating and I ended up getting hooked into their story and their lives.

This book was an interesting read. I chose this book based off of the cover alone. I have found that I enjoy doing this sometimes. That said, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I feel that the author took the time to really give the reader the understanding of the world the characters live in. I feel that it is a very quick read because of the flow of the story line. There aren’t any parts where it just lags. I kept turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. It has this whole fantasy side to the book along with a romance. It has a lot of action in this book as well. It was not what I was expecting. The vivid descriptions of the setting and the characters allowed for me to really picture everything. It also gave me a sense of being, meaning I felt like since I could picture it so well in my head; I was actually there seeing everything. This book is the second book in the “Gemstone Massacre Series”. It takes place shortly after the first book and dives right in. The first book focused mostly on Amy with some POV of others. This time around, it focuses more on Dusk.
After Dusk feels betrayed once again from Amy, he decides to seek revenge and put a stop to the violence. With a target on his back from Opal, it’s going to make it difficult to go unscathed but he is determined.
Meanwhile Amy is realizing that Opal and herself have a lot more in common than she wants. She wants to put an end to Opal once and for all but at what cost?
I really like the LGBTQ+ elements in the book along with the lore from King Author with bits and pieces of Norse Mythology (Freya). I also love the concept of magical gems. Like I said in my review of the first book, it gives Steven Universe vibes with more violence. Highly recommend it!
So delightful! Byrd Nash has done it again with the third installment of the Ghost Talker series. I absolutely love her writing style! It is easy to follow and captivating from the start. This installment is no different than the last as far as intrigue and entertainment. Great cunning and humor as well as romantic intrigue. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This is book two of the Gemstone Massacre and another fantastic read by the author. While reading these books in order will give you a broader and more detailed understanding of the series, I truly believe that readers will enjoy this title on its own without embarking on the previous title. The way the author beautifully created this paranormal and mythological-based fantasy is brilliant and includes the perfectly constructed framework that will help this series shine for many more rebellion adventures to come, should the author choose to continue.
I like the originality of this book and the way the author created a steady stream of drama, action, and a bit of the paranormal to keep the reader entertained and enticed throughout the story. If you enjoy the stories of King Arthur, you will recall some important details shared within this story.
I love the inclusivity referenced in this storyline, as the author openly created a cast of LGBTQIA+ roles. I think each character was carefully constructed to flawlessly fit their role and portrayal. It’s nice to see a genuine depiction of LGBTQIA+ characters that are dimensional and do not fall flat on the page and plot.
I really enjoyed this read and could not put this one down. I am interested in reading some of the author’s other titles, including any that may follow this book in the series since they are magnificently designed. I also need to give props to the chosen book cover because it is not only gorgeous but I feel it represents what I believe the characters would look like. This is the first installment in the Legacy of Gilgamesh series, and the first I have picked up by this author. Ancient myth and lore fascinates me and this book is a fabulous retelling of the very first one. Even readers who are unfamiliar with the Gilgamesh story would enjoy reading this book. It’s imaginative, captivating, and very well-written. The characters jump off of the page and pull you right down into their world. There is a glorious glossary included so don’t worry about knowing the epic tale in too much detail as you can learn on the journey. I loved getting lost in this tale, and I will absolutely grab up the next one!

I have never read The Epic of Gilgamesh, so not having read that I did enter this story blind, due to this being a retelling. I am glad the author added a glossary on what some of the words mean, without it, I would have been confused. This story was very well written, along with the character/world-building.
I wanted to like this story, however I just couldn’t get into it. I have read other fantasies that I loved and was hoping to add this one to that collection. Why couldn’t I get into it? I felt there wasn’t enough action.
It started off great and grabbed my attention right away with the war. It gave great insight to how Gilgamesh’s character is. How he is power-hungry and wants to make a name for himself. He did care for those in his inner circle and protected his family, but is ruthless.
After the first chapter, the war, it slowed down… A LOT. It became more of a slow burn and focused on character/world-building. While this is great for some, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Even the fight with Enkidu wasn’t much to grab my attention back. It was also love at first sight (or touch in their case).
There were other moments where I thought it was going to pick back up again, but it was never enough to grab my attention until about 80% into it.
I just didn’t vibe with it. I am sure someone who has read The Epic of Gilgamesh might be able to enjoy this story to its fullest potential, and of course, if you are more into character/world-building.
This book does end with a cliffhanger, but I don’t think I will be getting the second book in this series.

Amy’s Betrayal (Gemstone Massacre Series) by Julia Goldhirsh. This is the second book in the Gemstone Massacre Series but I recommend reading them in order to get a better understanding of the story and characters. Its an urban fantasy that includes, danger, Violence, drama and and paranormal in it. Its the continuing story of Amy who is beginning to realize that she and Opal have quite a bit in common even though she doesn’t want that to be true. Amy is determined to stop Opal from destroying everything in their realm and do it without causing any more harm to anyone. Amy decides to take things into her own hands and fight Opal with everything she has. Opal is not a fair judge and jury and she decides to run so that she will never have to chance having a fair trial. With the help of everyone and everything Opal has tossed aside Amy has a pretty fair chance at winning. There is magic, Paranormal activity and corruption galore in this story and you have to pay attention to keep up. Such a a good paranormal fantasy~!
Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk. His ambition is ceaseless even though he has created an empire and is part God. He feels indestructible and above his human counterparts. Enkidu is a man created by the Gods with no past. He has grown up with the wolves in the forest and has understood the ways of nature. Will Enkidu be exactly what Gilgamesh needs?
The beginning of this story is very slow and takes a long time to detail Gilgamesh and Enkidu. I have not read the original tales of Gilgamesh, but I do feel like it was written with an older time frame in mind. It feels like it can be a timeless tale. Enkidu reminds me of Mowgli, from The Jungle Book, with him being raised by wolves and then going to the humans and learning their ways after meeting a female in the forest. It does a good job of showing how these men will both grow and change together. The ending has a major cliffhanger so be prepared to read the next book.

This is a phenomenal start to an epic duology in The Legacy of Gilgamesh Books. I’ll admit…I was lured in by the cover and Bailey hooked me with her vivid storytelling and complex characters. This is a retelling of the tale of Gilgamesh and Bailey has put her own spin on the story. This is a tale teeming with romance, love, lust, twists, turns, betrayal, and so much more. You will have a hard time putting this down once you pick it up, but understand that this is a hefty undertaking. The worlds and characters that Bailey builds are no light affair and you will need time and energy to give to reading this story. It is slow in parts but honestly that is to be expected in such a large undertaking…you can’t have action every second…there has to be world-building and character development somewhere! I really do recommend picking this up if you are looking for something to occupy you for awhile. This would be a fantastic read in the car or a vacation read. I can’t wait for Book 2! Every chapter of this book is action packed. It’s a bit confusing with how much it jumps from one fight to another and from one character to another but it’s a decent story. It has shifters, dragons, magic, the Gods, humans, and so much more. It would be a great series for young teens just getting into chapter books.

This book is the second in the series and I would definitely recommend reading them in order to understand fully everything is going on. This book is a great addition to the series so far. It is just as exciting and well written as the first one. I was easily pulled back into these characters and the world the author has created. I love the twist this book gives on a classic story. It is an interesting take on the story and it really feels like the author has made it her own. The characters in the book develop well as the story progresses and I loved to see the journey they went on. So far this is a great series and I am looking forward to what comes next.
This is the third book in the Madame Chalamet Ghost Stories series, and it’s my favorite so far! I highly recommend reading the first two books in this series because the storyline continues with each installment. It was a rather quick rollercoaster of a read and found myself wanting more as soon as it ended. I admire Elinor so much with her wittiness and determination having a strong presence in this book more so than the others. If you are new to the Gaslamp fantasy genre, this is definitely the best to start with. The detective feel throughout the story definitely has a Sherlock vibe, and I love it. I cannot wait to dive into the next book series!
Spirit Guide is the third book in the Madame Chalamet Mysteries series. I have been thoroughly enjoying this series of ghostly mysteries so it’s a treat to read another book! In Spirit Guide, Elinor is brought in to help find a missing woman whose disappearance may have something to do with the Morpheus Society which trained Elinor (and has recently saddled her with a troublesome apprentice, Twyla).
I read the first couple of books out of order (I love food-themed books so couldn’t resist Delicious Death!) but I’d recommend reading the series in order, starting with Ghost Talker, to get to know the characters and see them develop over time.
This is an exciting mystery with fascinating paranormal elements. Elinor’s earlier forays into the Beyond have opened up possibilities that were not previously considered. While Twyla lacks control over her abilities, she does seem to have a natural inclination which proves both dangerous and useful.
This book gets five stars from me! Thoroughly engaging and entertaining. I’d recommend it to fans of gaslamp fantasy and anyone who enjoys a mystery and a ghost story.

I’ve read the previous selections in this series and each book is packed with more mystery, ghosts and detective work for Madame Chalamet, who is part spirit guide and detective. Madame Chalamet and her companion, Archambeau, use their skills to help find some kidnapped girl of a nobleman. As you read each page, you become lost in its vivid illustrations bringing back in time to this “steampunk” atmosphere. It is highly suggested to read these books in sequence to get a better understanding of background and characters. Each book has a different mystery that unfolds. Another bonus is that Madame Chalamet is shown as such a strong female lead character and this a quick mystery read!

Spirit Guide: Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries by Byrd Nash. This is the third installment in the Chalamet Ghost Mysteries series and I just loved it. It picks up right where the last one left off so I do recommend reading them in order. Elinor and Tristan continue to grow their relationship and solve crimes together. After Elinor’s dad is murdered she is trained as a medium so she works with local officials to solve crimes. In this mystery they are looking for a missing nobleman’s daughter who was researching the mysterious Morpheus Society. The more Elinor and Tristan look into this society the more strange things happen. A high ranking member of this society ends up doing really bad things between the realms. Will they be able to find the missing girl before she’s gone forever or before someone else disappears? Such a fun read. Love this series!
I thoroughly enjoyed “Spirit Guide: Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries” by Byrd Nash! The story is a delightful blend of gaslamp fantasy, mystery, and ghostly intrigue, set in the charming coastal city of Alenbonné.
Elinor Chalamet, the protagonist, is a feisty and clever spirit guide with a knack for communicating with the dead. Her unique skills are put to the test when a nobleman’s daughter goes missing, and she’s tasked with finding her. The investigation is complicated by a bumbling apprentice, a drunken soldier, and a stubborn nobleman who refuses to share information.
The world-building is rich and immersive, with a vivid description of the city’s atmospheric streets, markets, and landmarks. The characters are well-developed and complex, with Elinor being particularly well-written. Her banter with her friends and allies is witty and entertaining, making her a relatable and endearing protagonist. My favorite quip was when if Nikolas brought the sandwich back with a pickle, he would “need tongs to remove it from your throat!”

Spirit Guide was another book greatly written by Byrd Nash. The world building and character building was great. I do recommend reading the first 2 books before this one. The detailing was good in the book. This was a page turner for me.
Spirit Guide is book 3 in the wonderfully written Madame Chalalmet Ghost Mysteries series by Byrd Nash. I had fallen in love with this series from book one, and I’ve just become addicted to this author! I definitely recommend reading these in order, this one has a lot of answers we’ve been waiting for. Don’t let that fool you though, this one will ALSO leave you with tons of questions! I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on the next in the series, Grey Lady is calling my name!

In the Midst of Omens is set in a period of time where the Gods are prevalent. The main character is part God and the king of Uruk. He wants to leave an impact and be remembered after his death which has caused him to seek the future and not appreciate the present until his God mother and first wife pray for someone to help him see what he is missing while pursuing a change to his fate. The story is about finding your purpose, seeing and appreciating the present including what you already have, and admitting love for another. It’s a good story even if I did struggle with some of the names.

I freaking LOVED this book from page one. From all the re-written myths and stories that we see, Gilgamesh is NEVER even thought of! I thought the entire idea was genius, and I loved the writing style of the author. I couldn’t put it down! My inner historian heart is so happy from this!! Can’t wait for book two!!!

Have you ever just chosen to read a book just by its cover? Well for me this is one of those times. It didn’t pan out as I hoped but that’s okay. In the Midst of Omens has a cover the lures a reader in. It’s just a matter if this is your type of story or not. In my case it wasn’t but that doesn’t mean it was bad. The author put together a well written story of a man drunk on power. A goddess wanting to bring him down. And another man who is waiting in the wings for his calling. Brought together in a bit of a triangle but what’s the saying two’s company 3’s a crowd. Gilgamesh is drunk on power & ambition. Human to a fault though he possesses immortal powers that he inherited from his goddess mother. He needs an heir but 2 things stand in his way. They need immortal blood, that’s the law. As well as if he shows any of his children favoritism he may have sentenced them to death. Because the goddess Inanna would love nothing more than to destroy him. Why not through his children. She has plans for him. So when wolf raised Enkidu has been called upon to help rein Gilgamesh in it brings on a whole nother wrath from Inanna, but it’s just what he needs. What will be the end result? How will Gilgamesh and Enkidu navigate the path they landed on together? Premise for a wonderful story. If you like battle, revenge, god and goddess lore then this book is for you. I, on the other hand, am going to look into other books by this author because they tell stories rather well.

To be honest, I’ve never heard of Gilgamesh until now, I thought this was an interesting read and I enjoyed the characters. I liked that Gilgamesh had all these wives but when in the palace he told them that they didn’t need to consummate their marriage or even have children together. And I liked that though he was physically attracted to men he truly loved Shamhat, their marriage has everything but the sex. Gilgamesh’s characters grows, he stops worrying so much on the future and he tells everyone that it was Enkidu who killed Humbaba because he no longer cares about his legacy. I love when he’s ready to live in the moment. There’s Gods, friendship, action and romance, I recommend to all fantasy readers.

I love this series and am always excited to see what kind of trouble the Duke and Madame Chalamet find themselves in. Byrd Nash did not disappoint this reader. The storyline kept me on my toes and I could not put this story down. In this book, Chalamet helps the Duke solve a mystery about missing women and the Morpheus Society’s involvement. Their relationship finally evolves to more than just friendship and I am very excited to see where this love grows in the future! On to book 4…

As always, if it has mythology, regardless of which type, it’s going to catch my eye, and this story was no different. Having studied Gilgamesh, I was intrigued to see how the author would interpret his story and I thought she did an amazing job. This was a fast paced story that eventually draws you in so deep you can’t stop until the final page. I am definitely looking forward to book 2 as book 1 leaves us in a bit of a cliffhanger. The author did a great job of making the relationships between the characters feel genuine and real, even in the midst of gods and goddesses. She doe an amazing job with the character development and you truly want what’s best for them. I also loved the vivid deals in her descriptions, you really feel like you are transported to a new world.

Spirit Guide is the third book in the Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries series. Elinor finds herself solving yet another mystery with Tristan. This time the daughter of a baron is missing. When Tristan comes to Elinor for help she is all too eager to help. Unfortunately, The Morpheus Society may have something to do with the missing woman. I enjoyed this installment of the series. The addition of Twyla to the group of Elinor, Tristan, and the others adds some different energy and comedy. The plot is again well-written and engaging, The mystery keeps you guessing. I love the many laugh-out-loud moments. We are getting to see a little bit of movement with Tristan and Elinor which is lovely to see. I like Twyla and Elinor together. Twyla is frustrating but sweet and cares a lot about what Elinor thinks. This was a great addition to the series.

When she spots her friends as they return to class, she knows she has found her way. Beautiful illustrations and a cute, quick, imaginative story for little minds.

This is the third book in this series, and I highly suggest you read book 1 and 2 first as the character development tells a lot throughout them. As I have read this series, it has reminded me of reading the Nancy Drew books as a child. Each book is connected, but with its own story. Elinor takes on an apprentice who is inexperienced in this book, and of course, we have Tristan the Duke de Archambeau with us as well. I love how Elinor and Tristan work well with each other except when Elinor doesn’t listen to Tristan. That brings a funny side to the story. The mystery to this book was a bit darker than the other 2 books, but overall, it was still a great read.

Amy’s Betrayal is the second book in the Gemstone Massacre series by Julia Goldhirsh. This urban fantasy is a bit of a twist on the Arthurian legends- which makes for an original read. Woven with magic, danger, drama, assassins, paranormal elements, action, violence, elementals, an inclusive LGBTQIA+/gender fluid cast, agendas, friendship, gems, rebellion, good vs evil, and vivid world-building. There is a lot going on here, with a rather large cast of characters, so I highly recommend reading the previous books (Prequel & Book #1) before starting on this one, as that will allow you a richer reading experience of this book, as well as the series as a whole. Another great adventure/instalment in the series- I wonder what Julia Goldhirsh has in store for us next. Happy Reading…
