The Matchmaker and The Marine: A Second Chance Small-Town Romance by Lucinda Race – Review by Jennifer Gordon

The Matchmaker and The MarineThe Matchmaker and The Marine by Lucinda Race
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a small town, second chance at love romance story by Lucinda Race, and is a sweet and inspiring read which took me on a rollercoaster of emotions whilst reading it. Widowed matchmaker Melinda Phillips wants everyone to experience the kind of love she had with her husband and sadly lost. However Melinda has vowed never to date again, and meanwhile handsome Marine Adam Bell has sworn to hide his handicap forever. Adam was injured whilst serving in the Marines and had his leg amputated which is a constant reminder of his war years. Melinda’s job is matching up perfect couples and her business is thriving and she is in demand. Adam’s girlfriend rejected him following his amputation and now he is determined to protect his heart fiercely. The two meet when Melinda trips over at a client’s wedding right into the arms of a sexy Marine, Adam. Following Adams chivalrous rescue whilst at a friend’s wedding he suddenly wonders if he’s given up on love too soon and signs up for Melinda’s services. Melinda discovers that Adam’s ideal candidate is actually herself and the pair start to date and soon their relationship is blossoming. However Adam still believes that his hidden disfigurement will come between them. Melinda and Adam must overcome their traumatic pasts and take a chance at love and happiness for a second time.
I loved the main characters, both Adam and Melinda were realistic and relatable, you could tell that they both had traumatic pasts and that their fear for the future was real. The chemistry between them sizzled off the page and I was cheering both on to their happy ever after.

REBECCA STEELE FINDING A DREAM (REBECCA STEELE SERIES BOOK 2) by JOANNE PATTERSON – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Rebecca Steele Finding the Dream (Rebecca Steele Series #2)Rebecca Steele Finding the Dream by Joanne Patterson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

We first meet Becky Steele in ‘Rebecca Steele Chasing a Dream’, but although this is the second book in the ‘Rebecca Steele Series’ it can be read as a standalone story. I read it having not read the previous book and I thoroughly enjoyed it and then had to read the first book as well having fallen in love with Becky.
Becky now rides horses and lives on a ranch outside Nashville, her life is definitely different to when she was flying on airplanes. Becky is not only making her name for herself within her country music career but she is also taking the Tennessee rodeo circuit by storm. Best friend Emily is by her side sharing Becky’s new adventure with her. Just as Becky decides that she is happier than she’s ever been and is determined to enjoy her new life, out of the blue she is thrown a curve, a big one. Knowing that the decisions she makes will not only effect her life but those closest to her Becky need to decide whether she will take a chance.
I love Becky as a character as she has such a friendly, loving personality and is also independent and courageous and she is not afraid to go for what she wants in life. I found her relatable as a character and like that she shows her vulnerability at times, especially when she has to face her fears. Emily is a great best friend and I love the dialogue between the two of them. The storyline had plenty to keep me turning the pages, drama, suspense, romance and intrigue along with enough twists and turns that kept me guessing. I was cheering Becky on throughout this story as she worked toward attaining and living her dreams.

Feisty Heroines Romance Collection of Shorts Anthology – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Feisty Heroines: Romance Collection of ShortsFeisty Heroines: Romance Collection of Shorts by D.F. Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this anthology of short stories by a variety of well known authors covering multi-genres. All the stories are based on feisty heroines and the storylines are either, paranormal, fantasy, historical or contemporary romance. The Feisty Heroines collection will “whet your appetite with titillating, heart-pounding tales you’ll want to dive into again and again”. There are over thirty stories to capture your heart and make your pulse race, according to the blurb and it’s right. The common theme throughout the book is that it’s the feisty women who steal the show. Although the men are handsome and sometimes ruthless they are definitely ‘alpha males’, but it’s the females who are the heroines of the stories. The storylines are set in a variety of places from, the streets of bustling city’s, to ancient English castles, to far away places and mystical lands.

The women who are all independent, tough, feisty, often stubborn and very seductive come into their men’s worlds and turn them upside down whilst carrying out their missions to right any wrongs they have suffered. The men in the stories have to be strong willed enough to coax the softer side of our heroines out but sometimes these ladies are just too hot to handle. The storylines and characters in all these short stories are amazing and the book kept me reading well into the night. There is plenty of romance, chemistry which sizzles of the page and plenty of steamy scenes. The wonderful world building made me feel immersed in which ever story I was reading and although they are short stories they are all complete stories and packed full.

Good Bones, a contemporary romance by Maggie Adams was one of a few which really stood out for her amazing characters and a storyline which had me hooked from the start. Paranormal/fantasy romance, ‘With His Life’ by Theresa Hissong, which is a ‘A Rise of the Pride’ short story and Lane McFarland’s historical romance, ‘To Rescue My Princess’ were also particular favourites. However I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories in this Anthology of ‘Feisty Heroines’, and I recommend this book as a great read which has also introduced me to many new fantastic authors, who’s books I now look forward to discovering.

Another Yesterday (Seashells and Second Chances Collection Book 2) by Angela Christina Archer – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Another Yesterday (Seashells and Second Chances Collection Book 2)Another Yesterday by Angela Christina Archer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this novel and like the other stories in the series it is about strong independent woman who overcome hardships and find their second chances. The story is a sweet and sensual contemporary romance, which took me on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone story. “Two lives. Two stories. One fateful afternoon family secrets are uncovered from the hidden depths of the past.” In 1966, nineteen year old Maggie finds herself alone with a baby having left the city, her friends, family and the baby’s father behind. Maggie ends up in a tiny town in Maine, Shadow Brook at a beautiful inn, a place where she can forget her past and start a fresh with her daughter. In 1996, Rachel finds herself at her mothers run down inn in Maine. Having loved her life and career in busy hectic New York she’s not happy to return to her childhood home. However after her mother passed away and she then finds her husband in bed with another woman, Rachel finds herself back in Shadow Brook. Finding herself face to face with Luke, her high school boyfriend complicates matters further. Whilst clearing out her mother’s things from the attic, she comes across an old box of letters and journals and secrets from her mother’s past suddenly come to light.
I found this novel to be wonderfully written with a storyline that really captured me and kept me turning the pages well into the night. I loved the characters, both Maggie and Rachel are likeable and realistic and the problems that they overcome made them very relatable. I especially enjoyed the similarities and differences between the mother and daughters lives and how they both ended up in Shadow Brook for their own second chances. I definitely recommend this novel, and I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Swallowed by a SecretSwallowed by a Secret by Risa Nyman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“One dead father. One lying mother”. Twelve year old Rocky overheard his Mum admit that the story she had told him of his fathers death was a lie. Rocky does not know how he can trust her following that revelation. Then soon after his fathers funeral a ‘For-Sale’ sign appears in front of their house, a house full of memories of his dad.  Having moved house and having to start at a new school, Rocky suddenly hears the voice of his father, who is insisting that he return to his old town for answers, but can you take advice from a dead person? Rocky then makes a new friend in Olive who offers to be Rocky’s assistant sleuth and help him discover the truth. Rocky and Olive then go on a journey of risks, eavesdropping and snooping all to discover the truth about his father and find out why his mother lied. This is a contemporary mystery with an interesting storyline and great characters in Rocky and Olive. Both of the main characters were likeable and relatable and I loved how their relationship developed throughout the book. Girl Trap (A Madeline Dawkins Mystery Book 3) by Cynthia Hamilton – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Girl Trap (Madeline Dawkins #3)Girl Trap by Cynthia Hamilton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Girl Trap is the third novel in the Madeline Dawkins series by Cynthia Hamilton, it follows, ‘Spouse Trap’ and ‘A High Price to Pay’. Event coordinator and private investigator Madeline Dawkins adventures continue in this story. Both Madeline and partner Mike are busy with two cases which at first glance look like simple missing person cases, however it doesn’t take long to discover that the disappearance of two sisters from Minnesota and an estranged heiress who has never touched her eight-figure fortune are not simple cases at all. Mike heads off to search for his cousin’s missing girlfriend and her sister whilst Madeline’s investigation leads her to a Catholic boarding school. Both investigations lead them into danger and soon several lives are hanging in the balance. Mike and Madeline are then faced with both daunting odds and ruthless criminals.
Having been gripped by the first two books in this series I was looking forward to this third instalment and I was definitely not disappointed. I was hooked from page one with this fast paced mystery, adventure, thriller. I love Madeline as the main character and heroine of this series and I’m always cheering her on to a good outcome. I found this a great read and was fully immersed in Madeline Dawkins world once again.

Winter’s Wolf (The Cursed Series Book 1) by Lou Grimes – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Winter's Wolf (The Cursed, #1)Winter’s Wolf by Lou Grimes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this Young Adult (YA) paranormal story by Lou Grimes. Louvette Blackwood and her Mum have moved around a lot and Louvette is seen as a bit of a trouble maker and has been thrown out of many schools. She never knew her father or even his name, until a lawyer turns up to execute her grandfather’s will. Louvette discovers that her grandfather was murdered whilst searching for her father, and Louvette is the sole heir to the Blackwood estate and fortune. Having signed the will Louvette and her mother head to Montana for a fresh start. This decision starts an eventful year for Louvette with a new place to explore, new friends, a possible romance, and new enemies. She is also determined to find out the truth about her father, and then there’s the wolf’s!
No spoilers, I recommend this YA book as it is fast paced with an exciting storyline and has some great characters, all of which kept me turning the pages well into the night. I look forward to future books in this ‘The Cursed’ series.

Deleted by Ruth Mitchell – Review by Jennifer Gordon

DeletedDeleted by Ruth Mitchell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is an original story, set in the near future, in the 2040’s and as well as having me hooked from the start it also makes you think. Technophobe and college freshman Lucy learns to ‘mindhack’ and then along with her boyfriend they solve small crimes however Lucy is then deleted from his mind everyone else’s. Lucy is then in a race against time to stop a mysterious young hacker who erases memories for profit and is looking to wipe out all her memories. It’s not only Lucy’s memories at risk because if Lucy doesn’t find the hacker and stop him, no one will even know that minds can be hacked and therefore lives rewritten. This has a fast paced and exciting storyline and great characters that really come alive. I felt completely immersed in the world author, Ruth Mitchell has created in Deleted. I recommend this book as a real page turner and a great read.

Heart Broken (Satan’s Devils MC Book 5) By Manda Mellett – Review By Jennifer Gordon

Heart Broken (Satan's Devils MC, #5)Heart Broken by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Heart Broken is book five in Manda Mellett’s MC series about the ‘Satan’s Devils’ and this story focuses on MC member Heart. Although it can be read as a standalone story each book in the series do mention characters and events from previous books. Following the death of his wife Crystal, Heart is depressed and leaves everything and everyone behind including his daughter and goes on a road trip that he does not intend on returning from. However the voice of a female cop on the end of the phone keeps him going and alive as she alone seems to understand the emotions that he is feeling. However he does not think that Marc, a cop and an outlaw biker like himself can have a relationship, can they?
This series of books is full of amazing characters from officers, prospects and patched members of the Satan’s Devils and their Old Ladies to the club sweet butts. All the characters are well developed and have their own backstories which adds to the overall storylines. I loved Heart as a character, he was realistic and honest in his grief for his wife and I really felt his vulnerability. This series of books deals with some dark themes, from disability, sex trafficking, grooming of young girls, racism, and like this one, overcoming the grief of losing a partner but this just adds depth to the books, making this series so much more than, just another MC series.
This story is full of drama, action, suspense and of course romance. Heart Broken, took me on an emotional rollercoaster but you always feel as though you are among friends with the Satan’s Devils as you get to know the characters so well thanks to the authors wonderful descriptions of them. I felt completely immersed in the Satan’s Devils world and find Mellett to be a wonderful writer and storyteller.

Targeting Dart (Satan’s Devils Book 4) By Manda Mellett – Review By Jennifer Gordon

Targeting Dart (Satan's Devils MC, #4)Targeting Dart by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Targeting Dart, is book four in the Satan’s Devils MC’ series. This series is full of amazing characters from officers, prospects and patched members of the Satan’s Devils and their Old Ladies to the club sweet butts, and confirmed bachelor Dart is another great character. Dart is happy being an average member of the Satan’s Devils MC, he has no desire to be an officer and is happy riding in the middle of the pack and enjoys the biker life-style to the full, with no commitments. When he meets Alex whilst she’s auditioning to become a stripper to earn some much needed money for her sons medical care, Dart fights his attraction for her and all he offers her is friendship. Alex is happy to have a friend like Dart as she fights for the life of her sick child. However Dart has to step up when Alex’s violent ex reappears in her life and threatens to take her son away. Dart fears he has left it too late to express his true feelings and Alex has suppressed her feelings in fear of him hurting her but as they come together against her ex, they can’t fight their feelings for one another any longer.
This is another fantastic standalone story in Manda Mellett’s MC series, however personally I have found it more enjoyable to read the series of books in order as the characters do crossover and past events are mentioned in future books. Targeting Dart is a dark romance and does contains some themes of violence. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster but you always feel as though you are among friends reading books in this series, as you get to know the characters so well thanks to the authors wonderful descriptions of them all.

Slick Running (Satan’s Devils Book 3) By Manda Mellett – Review By Jennifer Gordon

Slick Running (Satan's Devils MC, #3)Slick Running by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Slick Running, is book three in Manda Mellett’s ‘Satan’s Devils MC’ series, Satan’s Devils are “hot alpha males who certainly aren’t shy in the bedroom”, and one by one they meet their strong feisty women, “who they want to ride with through life”, and this is Slick and Ella’s story. The club is devastated following the loss of one of their own so it’s not great timing when Slick’s ‘old lady’ suddenly returns needing Slick’s and the MC’s help. Slick had claimed Ella but then she ran away from both the club and Slick and he has no idea why so when she returns needing help he is obviously wary. However when he and the club discover why she needs their help they have no option but to help. The Satan’s Devils then find themselves having to break up a child grooming ring to rescue Ella’s younger sister. Meanwhile Slick and Ella still have the same attraction and chemistry they always had but Slick is determined that their past stays dead and buried and Ella is keeping a secret so can they overcome all the obstacles and get back together.
I loved Ella and Slick and was cheering them in to their happy ever after. I found this book a bit darker than the previous ones in the series as it deals with child grooming but to me this just added depth to the story making this series so much more than, just another MC series.

Drummer’s Beat (Satan’s Devils MC Book 2) By Manda Mellett Review By Jennifer Gordon

Drummer's Beat (Satan's Devils MC, #2)Drummer’s Beat by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book two of Manda Mellett  exciting ‘Satan’s Devils MC’ series is Drummer’s Beat. In this book we are introduced to the MC’s President, Drummer who has yet to find a women strong enough to be his ‘Old Lady’ until he meets Sam a fellow biker broken down at the side of the road. To make things complicated she claims to be another member, Vipers daughter. This storyline is a bit darker as it involves a sex trafficking ring and Drummer must find Sam before she’s lost to him forever. The storyline is fast paced and there are a host of amazing characters from officers, prospects and patched members of the Satan’s Devils and their Old Ladies to the club sweet butts. All the characters are well developed and have their own backstories which adds to the overall storyline. As the characters come into each book it is more enjoyable to read the series in order, however each book is a standalone story. Drummer’s Beat is full of drama, action, suspense and of course romance and plenty of steamy scenes between Drummer and Sam. The storyline does take you on an emotional rollercoaster as the characters are so well developed and described by Mellett that you feel as though they are old friends. Looking forward to book three.

Turning Wheels (Satan’s Devils MC Book 1) Review By Jennifer Gordon

Turning Wheels (Satan's Devils MC, #1)Turning Wheels by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Turning Wheels, introduces us to the Satan’s Devils MC and is the first book in Manda Mellett’s ‘Satan’s Devils MC’ series. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone story but the characters do crossover and it is more enjoyable if you read the books in order. In this book the club and its members are seen through the eyes of a disabled English woman, Sophie who is under their protection. Sophie is still coming to terms with being in a wheelchair and is overwhelmed at suddenly being in the middle of an American MC. We meet Wraith, the VP, who shows Sophie that her disability doesn’t define her. Wraith try’s to fight his attraction but when he needs to protect her from enemies he can not deny their chemistry.

Boundaries (Scope of Practice Book 1) by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Boundaries (Scope of Practice, #1)Boundaries by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in Aiken-Hall’s new series, ‘Scope of Practice’. Valerie Williamson works at Lawrenceville Regional Hospital and is known as the ‘Anti-social Social Worker’ by her colleagues. Having experienced a traumatic event sixteen years ago Valerie has closed herself off from everyone, except for Gabriel, her cat. Valerie’s job as a deceased patient coordinator makes her more comfortable with the dead than the living. However when she is asked to start up a trauma support group, she wonders how she can comfort people with trauma, when she can’t even talk about her own past. When the death of a nineteen year old, Carmen Davidson plays on Valerie’s mind she lets the detective, Tim that she’s been pushing away get closer to her as they try to get to the bottom of Carmen’s death. Valerie is concerned that her boundaries are blurring.
This novel has a fast paced storyline with plenty of suspense, mystery, action, and great characters. Valerie is a very realistic character who you can relate to and I liked how her relationship with Tim developed during the story. Although the book does deal with issues surrounding mental health, trauma and grief it is dealt with honestly and sensitively. The narrative also has plenty of humour along with the drama. I was hooked from page one and found myself completely immersed in the story. I look forward to future books in this series.

A Book Signing To Die For: Beach Reads by Judy Moore – Review by Jennifer Gordon

A Book Signing To Die ForA Book Signing To Die For by Judy Moore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a cozy mystery book which is fast paced and has plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. Beck O’Rourke and her Grammy, Miss Alice own a bookstore and coffee shop, Beach Reads in Manatee Beach, Florida. The place acts as a gathering place for both locals and tourists as well as being home to Beck, her Grammy and Lizzie, Beck’s younger sister. Beck is excited about an upcoming event, to host bestselling cozy mystery writer Marcia Graybill for a book signing at Beach Reads. When a member of the audience turns up dead, Beck decides to pursue her lifelong dream and becomes an amateur sleuth to discover who the murderer is. However the town’s new police detective, Devon Mathis is not too happy when she starts investigating suspects, and to complicate things further Beck has a history with the handsome detective.
I loved the characters, they were likeable and realistic and I liked how the relationship between Beck and Devon developed. The authors descriptions of the setting of Beach Reads really bought the place to life and I could picture the surroundings clearly. The murder mystery storyline had me gripped from the start and I enjoyed following Beck on her investigations to find the killer. This is an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading other books by this author, who is new to me.

Bottomed Out (Moto X Series Book 4) by Brooke May – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Bottomed OutBottomed Out by Brooke May
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Although part of a series this book can be read easily as a standalone story. Ex motor cross star Jax Hunt is fed up of people only seeing his disability and although he has a lot of positives in his life, his family, friends and a job he enjoys he is looking for a change. Jax’s does his best to prove to everyone that he can still do anything that someone with two working legs can do but now Jax’s is ready to push himself even more and prove the same to the rest of the world. When he first meets Lennox Austin he is instantly attracted to her exotic beauty and unique eye colour and is soon just as attracted to her entertaining personality, and even more so to the fact that Lennox actually sees him, Jax, as a man not as a man with a disability. Jax’s is willing to risk it all to achieve his goals and to ensure that Lennox does not turn away from him like so many others, he just has to deal with his overprotective brother first.
This is a great story who’s main character is in a wheelchair following an accident, however the storyline is more about how his disability does not define him or stop him from achieving his goals. I loved the two main characters, Jax’s and Lennox and their chemistry was instant but different situations and people kept preventing their relationship from developing. I really felt for Jax and was cheering him and Lennox on to their happy ever after. An enjoyable read and I look forward to reading other books in this authors ‘Moto X’ series.

Forgotten Chance: Book Three (The Forgotten Trilogy) by Virginia Wine – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Forgotten Chance: Book Three (Forgotten Trilogy)Forgotten Chance: Book Three by Virginia Wine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book three in Wine’s ‘Forgotten Trilogy’ continues Bryer and Nathan’s love story. I read the ‘hot and steamy’ version, and the couple are celebrating their love and looking forward to their upcoming wedding. However behind their backs there is a lethal plot which is planning on sabotaging their wedding and their relationship. As Bryer and Nathan deal with the plot the couple begin to fall apart and suddenly their future is threatened. A story of love and intrigue, and the chemistry between the two main characters continues to sizzle off the page. The storyline is fast paced and full of drama, love, romance, and of course plenty of steamy scenes. This was a perfect end to the exciting trilogy and I have been hooked since book one when first introduced to Nathan and Bryer. I was cheering the couple on to their happy ever after.

Love the Way You Dance by Allison M. Boot – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Love the Way You DanceLove the Way You Dance by Allison M Boot
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

We are back with Misty and Derrick who are now King and Queen of what is now called Starrycrest. This book focuses on their adoptive daughter Kara, who like Misty is in a wheelchair. This is a lovely modern day fairytale with a difference, in that the main character, the princess, Kara has a disability. Kara has the starring role in the Starrycrest Starlets’ production of The Nutcracker, however to achieve her dream she must prepare for the biggest night of her life with a dance partner she does not like. Soon Kara faces bigger concerns and must face her deepest insecurities when big changes occur which threaten her place both within the Denison family and in the kingdom. Things are complicated further for Kara when she hears of a program that helps orphans find their forever families but comes up against refusals from those within the royal family when she attempts to do similar in Starrycrest. In the background are the troublesome trolls who are after revenge following the events in the previous book.
Allison M. Boot conjures up a magical world of royal families, kingdoms, magic and trolls and through her detailed descriptions as a reader you really feel fully immersed in Starrycrest. The book is a lovely fairy story but it also deals with, family and family loyalties, adoption, personal insecurities and disability all of which the author has weaved into a magical story with great characters whom you grow to love and admire.
The fact that the main character has a disability is sadly a rare thing in a book and this in itself makes Allison M. Boot’s novel unique. The author has written about the disability with such sensitivity and honesty that she brings awareness of disabilities to her readers.
Although some of the characters cross over from Boot’s previous book, ‘Just the Way You Are’ and the stories are set in the same kingdom this can be read as a standalone book. I was very impressed with this novel and I hope it both inspires and educates readers that disabilities do not need to hold a person back from fulfilling their potential.

Designing Love (The Calderone Family Romance Series Book 3) by Victoria Grant – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Designing Love (The Calderone Family Romance Book 3)Designing Love by Victoria Grant
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Designing Love, is book three in the Calderone Family Romance series by Victoria Grant and although some of the characters overlap, each book in the series can be read as a standalone story. This is a fun romantic comedy featuring Charles Calderone and Caroline Winters, Caroline is a blunt pragmatist who loves her job as an architect and has a ‘no relationship’ rule, and Charles is a hopeful romantic and connoisseur of all things refined as well as the Vice President of his family’s business. “Tempers flare and sparks fly as their professional and personal lives collide”, when Caroline is chosen as the lead designer on the Calderone Industries office complex, and Charles appears to question her every decision. However neither can deny their attraction for one another and their chemistry sizzled off the page. I loved the interactions between the two of them and the witty banter between them as they were in a constant power struggle. I liked how sassy Caroline was and how her obvious talent for architecture came across, Charles was a great character as well, handsome, charming and a bit of a control freak. The book is wonderfully written and I happily escaped into the Calderone family’s drama as it was a real page turner. I was cheering the couple on to their happy ever after, no spoilers, as I recommend reading the book!

A High Price to Pay (The Madeline Dawkins Series Book 2) by Cynthia Hamilton – Review by Jennifer Gordon

A High Price to Pay (Madeline Dawkins, #2)A High Price to Pay by Cynthia Hamilton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A High Price to Pay is the second novel in the Madeline Dawkins series. In ‘A High Price to Pay’, Madeline is working as both an events coordinator and as a private investigator, her jobs cross paths during a weekend long fortieth birthday extravaganza for the wife of a famous film director. Following the theft of some family jewels, Madeline does a background check and along with Mike is soon dealing with a murder investigation. To add to her troubles Madeline is informed that one of the men that abducted her three years previously is being released early having done a deal with the Feds. As Madeline helped put Rick Yeoman in prison she fears he may come after her.
This is a gripping murder mystery, crime drama with a fast paced storyline and great characters. It was lovely to be back with Madeline who is still dealing with the events from book one and who along with partner Mike is continuing with her private investigator work. Madeline is a wonderful female lead and I love her witty one liners. The story had me hooked from page one just as the previous book in this series did. Although it can be read as a standalone story, personally I feel the reader would enjoy it more if they have read the previous book and so have Madeline’s backstory.
I look forward to future books in this series.

Not So Far (Love Grows series, Book 3)Not So Far by Renee Regent
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this standalone story in Renee Regent’s ‘Love Grows’ series, it is a lovely second chance at love story. Silas and Audrey were young when they first fell in love and came from very different backgrounds when Silas just disappeared they were both left heartbroken. When fate brings Silas back to Atlanta, Georgia he is determined to have a second chance at love with Audrey, the only girl he has ever loved. However telling Audrey why he left will devastate her and Silas is not the only one with a secret. I loved the two main characters and the attraction between them was obvious as was the hurt and distrust. I found this an enjoyable read and although this is the first book I’ve read by Renee Regent it will not be the last.

Hansel & Gretel (Down the Rabbit Hole) Anthology – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Hansel & Gretel: Down the Rabbit HoleHansel & Gretel: Down the Rabbit Hole by Autumn Sand
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I found this anthology a fascinating read, it includes seven different stories retelling the Hansel and Gretel fairy story. The stories are written by seven different well known authors and each story in this multi genre anthology will either, “tantalise you, scare you, or titillate you”. Each author gives you a version of Hansel and Gretel that has never been told before. The following stories are Hansel and Gretel reimagined by the various authors. “Come and join us…Down the Rabbit Hole!”, The Witch in the Woods by Amy Allen, The Surface by CeeCee Elaine, The Sweetest Day by Debra Parmley, Hazel and Gretchen by Erin Lee, The Reaper Within by Jess Bagnall, Shadows that Move by Lorah Jaiyn and, The Dragon and the Phoenix by Rachel Pudsey.
I enjoyed all seven of the stories and liked how different each one once and that the anthology covered many different genres. For example, in Debra Parmley’s, The Sweetest Day, Harry and Greta become lost in the woods and remember their Grandmother telling them the fairy story, Hansel and Gretel. Determined not to make the same mistakes they are reminded not to take candy from strangers and not to enter gingerbread houses.
Having reached a house that is not made of candy and are invited in by a lady telling them not to eat sugary foods they except. However when they wake up with magic shackles on their ankles after having tea and a muffin they realise they have been tricked. Nearing Harry’s eighteenth birthday six years later the witch must eat him soon or he will be unpalatable, and Greta is now addicted to the sugar the witch gave her to plump her up. Can they both escape before the witch cooks them, no spoilers as I recommend reading the story as I was hooked from the start.
In Hazel and Gretchen, Erin Lee tells a twisted and contemporary version of the fairy story. Hazel and Gretchen have been locked away by horrible parents and are now running out of bread and milk. The light outside the locked door is also fading stopping the sisters from returning to the real world, will they escape or be stuck for eternity. Again no spoilers, and again I was hooked from page one.
Lorah Jaiyn’s retelling, Shadows That Move had me gripped from the start. Daphne had heard a warning her entire life following her mother’s unsolved murder, “Don’t look for movement in the shadows, watch for the shadows that move”. It never made any sense to Daphne until she got lost in the forest and then the shadows came for her.
Each story had me fully immersed in its storyline and had well developed and engaging characters. I liked reading the short stories by the seven different authors and found that it gave me an insight into each of the writers and their varying styles. I would recommend all seven of the stories and was amazed at how many ways the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale could be retold, each story was unique and original.

Satan’s Devils MC Boxset Books 1-5 (Satans Devils MC Series) by Manda Mellett – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Satan's Devils MC Boxset Books 1-5Satan’s Devils MC Boxset Books 1-5 by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Brothers protecting their own”
I absolutely loved this boxed set of Manda Mellett’s ‘Satan’s Devils’ MC series, it includes books 1-5, as the blurb says, “Start your exciting ride with the first five books of the Satan’s Devils MC now available in a box set”. Although each book is a standalone story it is better to read the series in order as the characters crossover and past events are mentioned in future books. I loved having the box set as I could just ‘binge read’ them one after the other and having fallen in love with the characters I was desperate to know what was going to happen next.
The series follows the members of the ‘Satan’s Devils’ MC which includes “hot alpha males who certainly aren’t shy in the bedroom”, and their strong feisty women, “who they want to ride with through life”. Book one, Turning Wheels, introduces the club and its members seen through the eyes of a disabled English woman, Sophie who is under their protection.
Book two, Drummer’s Beat, introduces MC President Drummer who has yet to find a women strong enough to be his ‘Old Lady’ until he meets Sam a fellow biker broken down at the side of the road. To make things complicated she claims to be another member, Vipers daughter. This storyline is a bit darker as it involves a sex trafficking ring and Drummer must find Sam before she’s lost to him forever.
In book three, Slick Running, Slick had claimed Ella but then she ran away so when she returns needing help Slick is wary. The Satan’s Devils find themselves having to break up a child grooming ring and rescue Ella’s young sister. In,Targeting Dart, confirmed bachelor Dart fights his attraction to curvy black girl Alex. However all he can offer her is friendship as she fights for the life of her sick child. Dart has to step up when her violent ex reappears in her life and then they can’t fight their feelings for one another. Book five is, Heart Broken and following the death of his wife Heart is depressed and goes on a road trip he does not intend on returning from. The voice of a cop on the end of his phone keeps him going though and she alone seems to understand the emotions he is feeling but he does not think that a cop and an outlaw biker can have a relationship, can they?
This series of books is full of amazing characters from officers, prospects and patched members of the Satan’s Devils and their Old Ladies to the club sweet butts. All the characters are well developed and have their own backstories which adds to the overall storylines. The books do deal with some dark themes, from disability, sex trafficking, grooming of young girls, racism, and overcoming the grief of losing a partner but this just adds depth to the books making this series so much more than, just another MC series.
Each story is full of drama, action, suspense and of course romance and plenty of steamy scenes as the chemistry between the various couples sizzle off the page. Each book also takes you on an emotional rollercoaster but you always feel as though you are among friends as you get to know the characters so well thanks to the authors wonderful descriptions of them. I felt completely immersed in the Satan’s Devils world and found Mellett to be a wonderful writer and storyteller. I look forward to future books in this series and others by the author.

Just the Way You Are by Allison M. Boot – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Just the Way You AreJust the Way You Are by Allison M Boot
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a lovely modern day fairytale with a difference, in that the main character, the princess Misty Miles has a disability. Misty is the the princess of a faraway land known as Starryton and for twenty one years she has been in a tower and her disability and her wheelchair have been hidden from the kingdom. Her parents are worried that the monarchy will look weak and even though her parents have hidden her away to protect her it has left Misty feeling that she is unable to do anything. Misty’s Prince Charming, Derrick Denison is the prince of the neighbouring kingdom of Mooncrest and he’s a gifted dancer. Misty and Derrick have not actually ever met. To make things more complicated there has been a long running feud between Misty and Derrick’s families. The conflict caused the once beloved kingdom of Starrycrest to break apart into two separate kingdoms. Having realised that she must take matters into her own hands Misty visits a troll,
Trovella who is rumoured to grant wishes for a price. This wish sends the princess off on an exciting and dangerous adventure and in the process she battles her own self doubt and learns that she is far more capable than she ever imagined. As well as dealing with feuding families, a disability, and ensuring no harm comes to her or Derrick’s kingdoms, along the way Misty encounters a little girl with her own disability who is in need of a forever family of her own.
This is a fairly quick read but the author has packed so much into the pages of this young adult story and as an older adult I was absolutely hooked from page one. I found it both a lovely romantic story with plenty of action and also an inspiring read. The fact that the main character has a disability is sadly a rare thing in a book and this in itself makes Allison M. Boot’s novel unique. The author has written about the disability with such sensitivity and honesty that she has bought disability awareness to the reader along with a wonderful storyline and likeable, realistic characters. I was very impressed with this novel and I hope it makes other readers feel as empowered as the princess becomes in the story and educates young readers that disabilities do not need to hold a person back from fulfilling their potential.

New Jerk in Town: An Enemies-to-Lovers Romantic Comedy (Carolina Kisses Book 2) by Sylvie Stewart – Review by Jennifer Gordon

New Jerk in Town (Carolina Kisses, #2)New Jerk in Town by Sylvie Stewart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This can be read as a standalone story but some of the characters cross over from previous books in Stewart’s ‘Carolina Kisses’ series. In ‘New Jerk in Town’ Jill, the younger sister to Jenna from ‘The Nerd Next Door’ is the focus of the story. Jill is a natural flirt but seeing Milo Papatonis again she’s reminded that he is the king of all jerks. Surly, rude, selfish, and extremely attractive Milo crushed Jills dreams when they were children had now she’s being forced to share a house with him. Thankfully the situation is only for business and is temporary, however that dose not stop Milo’s bad manners effecting Jill or picturing him in the shower, or imagining his smile, no Jill is definitely not going there.
This is a fun sexy, enemies to lovers romance with plenty of comedy thrown in and steamy scenes as neither Milo or Jill can deny their obvious attraction to each other and their chemistry sizzles off the page. I was cheering the main characters on hoping they both got their HEA, and the secondary characters are all intriguing as well and I hope to see them pop up in future books in this series. A great read for some escapism.

Humiliating Revenge: Contemporary Young Adult Romance by T. Christensen – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Humiliating RevengeHumiliating Revenge by T. Christensen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This contemporary YA romance by author T. Christensen sent me on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it, it’s so much more than an enemies to lovers story. The book had me hooked from page one due to its fast paced storyline and great characters. Rich, snooty, spoiled town princess Olivia Crawford was ‘famous’ for being all those things whilst Calum Breen was the easy-going, adored high school athlete. Having been childhood sweethearts, Olivia then not only ended the relationship with Calum but did so in such a way that his humiliation at her hands and anger drove him away and he joined the MMA. Now successful as a MMA fighter, Calum is back in town and as he is no longer the love struck boy he once was is determined to get his revenge on Olivia. However the more he learns about the mayors daughter the more he realises things are not as they seem. This book definitely has a “Hot Alpha Male and a Determined Heroine”, I loved Olivia and Calum as the main characters and their chemistry sizzled off the page leading to some steamy moments. I thought the storyline of Olivia being abused by her controlling father was dealt with sensitively and realistically and gave the story added depth than just another teenager romance.
The book was full of twists and turns and unexpected secrets coming to light which kept me turning the pages and I was immersed in Olivia and Calum’s world. I was cheering them on to a HEA. A great read and the first book I’ve read by this author and I now look forward to reading other books by T. Christensen.

Hero High: Figure In The Flames by Mina Chara – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Figure in the Flames (Hero High, #1-3)Figure in the Flames by Mina Chara
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a box set that includes three books from the ‘Hero High’ series, Denial, Anger and Bargaining.
The series is centred around, Friday Fitzsimmons who is one of the “One in a Thousand People on Planet Earth who have a Supernatural Power”. Friday is sent to ‘Hero High’, a school for the supernaturally gifted to train. The school is in the glamorous Icon City, a haven for all those with supernatural powers. However Hero High is not just a school for trainee superheroes it is also a reality TV show and one of many on the Hero Channel. As a ‘gifted’ student Friday has to take part in a reality TV show where good fights evil for the city’s soul. However not all the students use their powers for good, like the mysterious masked boy or the man on fire who calls himself The Figure In The Flames. Along with friend Jake, Friday struggles to come to terms with her new situation and her new powers all whilst battling her crippling anxiety. Luckily Friday has Captain Fantastic on her side.
Each book is a short read but packed full of adventure, with a fast paced storyline and each book continues Friday’s adventures at Hero High. I have come to love Friday over the three books and think she is a great lead character as she is very likeable and relatable as a character especially as she battles with acute anxiety. The world building is great and thanks to the authors wonderful descriptions I felt totally immersed in Icon City and Hero High. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books and found that as it was a box set I could just continue with Friday’s story in the next book straight away.

Night Justice (A Chicago Vigilantes Novel Book 1) by India Kells – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Night JusticeNight Justice by India Kells
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a book full of drama, action, suspense and romance, it also has a sassy heroine and a strong hero who’s chemistry sizzled off the page and led to plenty of steamy scenes. I was hooked from page one, reporter Orla Karlsen is determined to track down and prevent the distribution of a new drug in Chicago. She is even prepared to enter the underworld of Chicago, however she’s not alone as the ‘Vigilante’ has also sworn to protect the city. Their common quest sees the reporter and the masked man working closely together and sparks start to fly but when they both enter dangerous territory will they fight together or apart. No spoilers, this was an exciting read and I thoroughly recommend this first novel in India Kells new series.

Finding Leda; the Science of Happiness (Italian College Novel 1, The Italian Saga) by Gaia B Amman – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Finding Leda, the Science of Happiness (The Italian Saga #5)Finding Leda, the Science of Happiness by Gaia B. Amman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the heart of Milan in 2000, Leda Balni is nineteen and hoping to graduate in genetic engineering. Having read Gaia B Amman’s previous series of her fictionalised account of her own childhood and having read about her school years I was pleased to catch up with Leda and I was not disappointed.
Leda is pondering her happiness along with her feelings as she enjoys her independence, her learning and her rock band. Does she really have time for falling in love and surely she’s to clever for her feelings to be for Sergio, as although he is handsome in a smouldering way he is also unreliable, brooding, and a pothead.
The author manages to capture the thoughts and feelings of a nineteen year old which make Leda so realistic and relatable as a character. She is able to touch on raw emotions and write with such honesty as well as give good life advice. The book is both a great read with an exciting storyline and an independent, feisty and clever heroine at its heart and is also an empowering read. I also felt completely immersed in the wonderful Italian setting due to the authors detailed descriptions, I felt I was in the heart of Milan along with Leda. I look forward to continuing Leda’s adventures with her in future books.
