My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Athalie (Sacrificial Chronicles Book 1) by Jordan Elizabeth is a YA fantasy story. This story is unique and engaging and the jam-packed plot is well done. It is well written, and the world building is well done. It is easy to see the world as Jordan sees it. The characters are well developed and compelling. There are many twists and turns as we adventure along with Athalie that certainly keeps us on our toes.

Athalie is to be the sacrificial lamb for her tribe but the gods have other ideas. Now she just must be reborn and stop the world from being destroyed.

Athalie (Sacrificial Chronicles Book 1)Athalie by Jordan Elizabeth
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Athalie is a story of a young maiden who turns a reluctant sacrificial Goddess for the greater good of her empire, only to find out in her after-life that the whole planet is in danger. The high priest plans to unleash a deadly weapon to wipe out the enemy of the empire, but what he does not know is that it is a weapon of mass destruction. Pleading with the Gods, Athalie comes back as a spirit to persuade the high priest and others to stop from unleashing the weapon, but is it too late or can she carry this humungous burden successfully on her shoulders?

This dystopian fantasy is really easy to read, it took me less than 2 hours to finish the book. I really liked the way all the characters and their costumes were described. The sacrificial scenes and the elaborate effort which is taken to prepare the sacrifice are especially were described in great detail.
Overall, a very breezy and a light read.

Four stars

Wow, is really all I can say. I literally imagined that this is how they lived in this time. There is so much to unpack in this story. Athalie is chosen as the sacrifice. But she knows it’s a mistake. Since she was a child she heard voices on the wind. Those voices carrying the truth and lies of the people. I was not expecting this story to hold my attention like it did. I dislike when people follow someone blindly. Never questioning if it’s right or wrong. I was excited that Athalie puts up a fight. This was definitely an eye opener. She shows real empathy to most people.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jordan Elizabeth is a newer author to me and I have enjoyed her writing style. Athalie is a YA fantasy with adventure, drama, challenges, and the fate of the world. Her plotline is energetic, lively, and keeps you on your toes. The characters are fully developed and engage you in the story. Athalie is a village girl who has been chosen to be the yearly sacrifice. (Now with that being said, doesn’t this story capture your attention?) The gods have decided that the emperor needs to be stopped. There has been a weapon in the emperor’s arsenal. The problem is that it will destroy their world. The gods resurrected Athalie to search for talismans to help with the emperor’s weapon. One little problem, if Athalie dies while on this quest she will not be resurrected again. I highly recommend this book and I will warn you that you may read it in one sitting so make sure you have everything you need. I cannot wait to see what is coming up for Jordan Elizabeth.

Athalie (Sacrificial Chronicles Book 1)Athalie by Jordan Elizabeth
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Athalie is a fantasy novel which tells the story of a sacrifice and what came afterwards, it starts in the capital of the Sapphire Empire on the planet Neoma, when Athalie is 6 years old and watching the annual sacrifice for the first time, she is in awe of the dancers spinning to the drum beat, the priestesses composure and the priests voices which are lifted in song, as well as everyone else being in their finery, but the most beautiful of all is the girl chosen to be the sacrifice for that year. As the young woman reaches her destination, she stops walking and desperately tries to escape her fate, Athalie is terrified and willing someone to help her, but realises that her death is more important to the people, even the girls family, than her life is and when she is tied up and still sent to her death, Athalie is changed forever.

Eleven years later, we rejoin Athalie in the Sun Chamber for the annual choosing of the sacrifice, all girls between the ages of thirteen and seventeen are gathered together for the gods to observe and choose the one whose soul would be reborn, as the priests passed between the girls and the High Priest used his god given staff to test each of them, Athalie is planning her wedding and imagining how the ceremony and whatever happened afterwards would be, but this is all for naught as she is chosen to be the sacrifice for that year, she is sure that they are wrong and that she should not have been chosen, but when she is taken away to the chambers assigned to the sacrifice, she maintains that the choice was wrong, but the High Priest will hear nothing of it and walks out of the room, leaving soldiers to guard her and one night Athalies fiancé helps her to escape where she is being held so that she can say goodbye to her family, however, she is caught.

Over the next three days, she is made beautiful by the slaves for the events leading up to her sacrifice, she feasts, drinks too much, meets the emperor and walks through the villages so the people can see her, she still maintains that she isn’t meant to be sacrificed, however, the High Priest threatens that he will hurt her family if she doesn’t go along with everything and become the sacrifice, but when she is being bathed on that fateful day, she overhears a conversation about a weapon which the High Priest has found and is going to use on their enemies. When the day comes, she goes to the designated place and her life ends, but it is not the end of Athalie, after the pain has subsided, she finds herself in a field of wildflowers with animals around her and feels at peace, but she suddenly goes elsewhere and finds herself in front of one of the gods who answers her questions, but with only vague answers, but when the weapon comes into the conversation he explains what the weapon is and what it will do, Athalie is shocked by this information and begs to go back to make sure that they won’t use it, he refuses, but Athalie is adamant that she needs to go back, so he takes her to see other gods. When there, she manages to find out how the weapon can be stopped, but they do not want her to do it, so they agree to point her in the right direction, but that she has to find and then work out how to use this other weapon herself, but if she fails, she will not be reborn.

When Athalie is sent back to Neoma to find what she needs to stop the deadly weapon, she gives herself another name and declares that she is a prophet, she tries to talk to the High Priest, but he doesn’t believe her declares that he will use the weapon anyway on the next full moon, which is only a few days away and locks her in a room, however, she manages to find a way out and while doing this, she finds an unusual ally who helps her on her mission, but will Athalie be able to find and work out this weapon in time, or will she perish along with the rest of her planet? This is a whirlwind mission across countries fraught with danger and obstacles which keeps you hooked right until the end and well worth a read.

Athalie by Jordan Elizabeth is the first book in the Sacrificial Chronicles. It is a unique YA fantasy story that draws you in with a well written story and amazing characters.
I loved the feel of this book from the moment I started reading it. It felt fresh and new straight away and it made it exciting to read. I loved Athalie – she had such a journey to undertake and it felt like I was with her for all of it. The author really knows how to make you connect with her.
This author is a relatively new author to me but this book has to be my favourite one of hers so far. I am certainly looking forward to reading book 2 and if this is the standard of her work then I am looking forward to reading other books by her in the future as well.

Athalie is the first book in the Sacrificial Chronicles by Jordan Elizabeth. This is a YA fantasy with action, adventure, discovery, danger, drama, challenges, paranormal elements, Gods, and high stakes, with the fate of the world under threat.
Athalie has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders- the fate of the world to be exact. After being chosen for her people’s yearly sacrifice, she is resurrected by the Gods and given a quest in order to save the world. A weapon ha fallen into the hands of the Emperor who has plans to use it against the enemy- but he doesn’t realise that unleashing that power will actually annihilate their world. Athalie will need to track down the talismans needed to negate the power of the weapon. And so the adventure begins.
I loved the beautiful cover, and the synopsis was quite original and interesting, so I one-clicked a copy and immediately started the adventure. This story sets the Sacrificial Chronicles off to a bit of an epic start, with fascinating details and wonderful character/s.
This is the second book of Jordan Elizabeth’s that I have read- and is my favourite of the two, by far. I am so glad that I took the chance on this book- I will definitely be reading the rest of the series as I need to know where we go from here.
Bring on Book #2!!

Thank you, Jordan Elizabeth!

The plotline is an intriguing story that has ancient secrets, pasts, and a journey that keeps the pages moving at a nice pace. The characters are fully developed and enhance the story to make the story enjoyable. The story is about Sabiya. She lives in a town that looks down on women. We watch as Sabiya starts her journey which makes this story so interesting. I highly recommend this book so that you can follow Sabiya’s journey. Evil's Whisper (Evil Saga Book 1)Evil’s Whisper by Jordan Elizabeth
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As epic as Jordan Elizabeth’s characters, world building and story might seem to be, I unfortunately did not enjoy the author’s writing style. It was difficult for me to find the characters interesting, and neither the action packed intro sequence or the desert setting really held my attention. It felt like the author had the grand story in mind, but could have spent more time on some basic building blocks.

For example, Sabiya, one of the main characters, opens the story by running away from her wealthy but abusive family. She is immediately captured by desert bandits. Although the concept of her flight from home and abduction is interesting, I personally felt no attachment towards Sabiya. My sympathy towards her could have been built up more by inverting the first few chapters a little. The opening would have been more impactful if we witnessed her hardships at home and then watched her take action in response. Instead, she came off as a spoiled, helpless and miserable princess. Most of her inner dialogue is centered around her dislike or lack of confidence of her physical appearance. This made her feel like an unlikeable Princess Jasmine from Aladdin who’s caught up in the schemes of ancient and powerful beings. Despite my critiques, this book is still worth a read. Everyone has their own tastes and I will probably check out one of Jordan Elizabeth’s other books before forming any solid opinions.

This is the combined story of Sefina, Uthias, Sabiya and other characters who are trying to hold their own with the resources and attitudes they have in order to survive and avoid the perils of being who they are in the land which used to belong to the Kadians, a race of ancients who destroyed themselves through misuse of power and with their wickedness created a sword and who are nearly all extinct, but whose lineage has split the land between three queens were born of the last of the Kadians, Ucenoia, a bullheaded yet stable neutral woman, Sia who is beautiful and selfish and the graceful and righteous Amalita. The Kadians became spirits of the dead who roam the deserts still searching for the sword and help and hinder those who travel within the desert itself and who have prophesied the birth of two daughters, one of Darkness and one of Light, there are those who seek to control the Darkness, but the spirits wish her destroyed instead.

Sabiya is a girl who lives in Juniper and has a life of hardship, but remains the daughter of rich parents, however, when she escapes into the desert to deliver a message, she is found by outlaws who kidnap her and take her to their camps, they want to do awful things to her and she should just keep her mouth shut and let them, but she tries to reason with them and pleads for her release, when she sees a young man brought into the camp, she sees an opportunity for an ally, especially when he states that his brother will come and rescue him. Meanwhile, Uthias is heading towards the outlaw camp to save his brother and so leaving his horse behind, he quietly heads towards the camp, when he gets there, he is thankful.that the night is clear and he passes through lines of tents with ease, he can hear the cries of a girl, but puts her out of his head, he cannot save her as well, he hears a boy scream and knows it is his destination and as he enters the tent, he sees his brother being whipped by one of the outlaws. He makes his presence known and takes down the outlaws holding his brother with ease, saying that the Killer doesn’t show mercy to those who harm his family and after he has untied him, his brother demands that he goes back for the other girl in the tent whom he has promised his brother will rescue as well, much to Uthias’s annoyance, he goes back and releases her from her ties and tells them both to run towards the exit. Uthias then orders his brother to steal a horse and as a distraction, he sets fire to the tents in the camp and on reaching the exit, summons his horse and pulls the girl into the saddle with him and sets off to return her to her home.

The next morning, Sabiya goes to work, she is a maid to the Seeir of Juniper City and has served her for years, she considers her as a friend and confidant, as well as her employer, she is treated fairly, more so than at home where she is beaten by her father, hated by her brother and is treated indifferently by the rest of them. She has no future there and when another chance comes for her to go to Uthias with a message from the Seeir, she jumps at the chance. It is there that she meets the rest of his family, including his sister Sefina and this is where their paths intertwine with the fate of the country they live in, but what that fate has in store for them is unclear, but what is clear are the tasks they must complete, even if the reasons for this are not.

This is a tale of good versus evil in a country of split loyalties, there is magic and there are spirits, untold hardship and danger along the way, but also love and belief, but will the good hold up against those who want to use it for ill, or will the darkness spread across the land as foretold?

Evil's Whisper (Evil Saga Book 1)Evil’s Whisper by Jordan Elizabeth
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Evil’s Whisper is the first book in Jordan Elizabeth’s exciting Evil Saga. Set in a fantasy desert world, it mingles prophecy with the uncertainty of a violent and deceitful world.
A particular theme I found interesting in this book is that of conflicting beliefs. Characters from different parts of Elizabeth’s vibrant world believe they are protected by different deities. For some, the coming of the Daughter of Darkness is a source of great hope. Others fear what they believe she will do and seek to stop her at any cost. As they meet each other, characters begin to question what they have taken for granted for so long.
It’s a bit of a complicated story, with a lot of characters to keep track of and a narrative that jumps between different interwoven strands of the tale. This book requires a fair bit of attention to follow, but rewards readers with surprises, tension and mysteries.
This is another one for my list of “Books published in late 2020 that feature a deadly illness”. Which is not necessarily a bad thing – it can be interesting to see some of the what-ifs explored in a fantasy setting (and this book certainly has an interesting approach!). But it is something to be aware of if you’re hoping for a read that will let you forget about COVID for a while.
We’re left with a bit of a cliff-hanger – some strands of the story are resolved but there is plenty left for the sequel. I can’t wait to read it!
For me, this is a five-star book. I would recommend it to fantasy fans looking to lose themselves in a new world, particularly those who enjoy stories with interesting politics and power dynamics at play.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the fantasy and adventure in this book. The author does an amazing job of building the characters and the world in which they live. It feels like you are actually there experiencing it all with them.

Sabiya lives in a place where women are seen as worthless and not as good as men. Fed up of that way of live she tries to escape only to be captured by outlaws.

Being captured she is almost certain to face death until the brother of another captive rescues them both.

After they rescue her the brothers end up taking Sabiya back to the very place she is trying to escape from.

Will she try to leave again? Will she succeed this time? Her adventure is a gripping story that keeps you turning the pages from beginning to end.

Evil’s Whisper is the first book in the Evil Saga by Jordan Elizabeth. This is a bit of a dark paranormal fantasy- with action, adventure, secrets, lies, deception, abduction, and challenges.
I found the synopsis of the story to be quite interesting- so I snapped up a copy and dove in. I love a great epic fantasy, and this has all the promise of hitting that mark- but unfortunately, for me, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. There were a few issues that made it hard for me to connect with the character/s, or invest in the story- leaving me wanting at the end.
But this could just have been a bad reading day for me- so I have put this on my re-read list to revisit in a couple of weeks to see if I still feel the same way about it.
I am interested to see where this series is headed, so I will keep an eye out for future additions.

The desert winds bring the voices of the Dead to those who can hear.

The desert beckons her, but she is not prepared for the sheer expanse of nothingness. Nor is she expecting the robbers who capture her when she has barely begun her journey. She is rescued with the help of another captive’s brother.
Sabiya is returned to Juniper City with only the memory of her savior, the exotic Jadaidi warrior, Uthias. He’s a man with another, secret name and a dark purpose. An ancient past is about to catch up with the present, and old wars are once again igniting, where no one is safe.
