Let me start out by stating that this book contains a trigger warning as it contains and focuses on rape. I have to say that this is a very well written book and it tackles the subject of guilt very well. This book definitely made me feel so many emotions, to the point where I was crying at various points throughout. This is something that I think is a very well written mark. I think it took a good look at how the choices we make can live with us for years past when we make the choice. I definitely recommend this, especially for those who love books that feature growth in their characters!

The first thing I have to say is The Summer I Went Crazy is not for everyone. There are some situations and topics that can be triggering for some readers. Now that we covered that part I have to say that this is a well written story. This is a book full of twists that will keep you on your toes. It was almost impossible to put down. The story is so well written that many times I was so angry at situations and wanted to throw something at the characters because of how real it felt. I think this is definitely a great story if you are able to handle the hard topics at hand.

This was a good book. I would be interested to read Coyote Summer to see what the story is like with magical elements. This kind of book is one that makes you uncomfortable and tense because it is a topic that is so real. I found myself getting angry at the situation because of the real life aspect of it and I couldn’t imagine this happening to me or people I knew in my youth. I thought the characters were relatable and you could feel the pressure and angst they were feeling. It definitely fits in the genre of its kind.

The Summer I Went Crazy by Laura Koerber is another intriguing story with plenty of thought-provoking content. As always, Ms. Koerber brings realism and complete believability to her story- making you feel like this actually happened. One Summer that will never be forgotten, for many reasons. Forty years later and it still is plays on the mind and soul. Now, can a phone call change everything? The story does have an emotive quality about it, and definitely made me ‘feel’ quite a lot as everything unravelled- it does centre around a crazy summer, and does contain sensitive subject matters, as in rape, which is central to the whole story – but this is ultimately a coming-of-age story- with dubious decisions, drama, angst, guilt, turmoil, emotion, and a first-person POV. This story is a rewrite of Ms. Koerber’s Coyote Summer, but without the fantasy and magical realism. This version is a ‘straight’ up fiction/women’s fiction story- which works really well. It is a bit of a character study too- with the whole coming of age woven through it all. Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Koerber does next.

This is a story written on a real topic that sadly happens every day. It is a literary fiction novel yet it will make you mad because of how the “privileged” kids handled what happened to Claire. One party, Lots of alcohol and no more needs to be said. Ben is left with a lifetime of guilt working through what happened. I wept and got mad with him. You felt the emotions with him. It can be triggering in parts. I did have to stop at times to breathe as it was hard for me, but I had to keep going as I was fully invested in the story. This is a story that yanks your heartstrings right from the get-go. The characters truly felt like they were taken right from real life. You could feel the angst coming off Ben. It’s a book worth reading. Even with the topic covered, one of the best I’ve read for the year.

So The Summer I Went Crazy is not something I typically read. It was a one off to try something different. That different had me wondering for a while about what I was reading. However, it wasn’t bad, and it was well written. The author gave the reader an interesting take on coping with one’s guilt while finding oneself at the same time. The guilt in question could be a trigger from some so just be mindful. Ben was witness to something that he wishes to forget. And knowing that just makes him feel guilty. It also makes him realize that those around him aren’t really in his corner. He spends his summer finding himself with the help of Phoebe. Adventures he never thought he would take part in, but they were the exact adventures he needed. He’s from an upper class neighborhood she’s from quote on quote the other side of the tracks, What could they really have in common? Reality more than one could think. Plus she’s genuine which he likes about her vs those he grew up with, they were all the same, no diversity. The path of self discovery for Ben is one I feel I’m going to have to reread. I feel like I missed a lot because my mind was trying too hard to figure what one thing had to do with another. Once I did I know I missed a lot. What I can say is, give it a chance. And if you find yourself in the same place I am, read it again because it might surprise you.

3.5 stars Beware there may be triggers as the story delves into a lot of things but the main one is rape. As Laura says The Summer I Went Crazy is now a straight literary fiction novel. A New Adult story. If it looks/feels familiar it’s because it was once called Coyote Summer but it has been rewritten. Rich kids at a private school doesn’t stop atrocities from happening. In fact sometimes they are worse because they think they are more entitled, that they are more than privileged, have more money, more power. All it takes is one summer. One crazy day. One party. One single action. One defining moment. One hour for lives to be changed. One minute for a life time of horror, pain, suffering, torment. One promise. One second for a lifetime of guilt. BUT it took 40 years for the one phone call that would change everything. It is an intriguing story because it is told in the first person as seen by a young man. His lack of conscience, values and actions and the questionable morals annoyed me. He is not a nice person but Laura did well in creating his character. He struggles with what he witnessed and is full of guilt that carries through decades with him. Who looks back on his past and that of his friends and realises he should have done more. Now, forty years later, and one phone call……………. My emotions and feelings were all over the place with this one. It is definitely a thought provoking story.

This book made me mad but not because of the author or the story but of the raw real life manner in which everyone handled the assault of young Claire. This story is well written, very life-like at aspects but in others it’s new ideas and shows a new thought process. Ben saw something horrible at a party, now he has found new friends and is trying to make it alright but is he losing his mind? Reading the epilogue at the beginning you aren’t sure you understand but by the end when you reread the epilogue, it definitely phases you. I had so many good emotions that brought tears.

This is an author that I never hesitate to pick up. I have enjoyed reading her books from the first one I picked up. This one is no different. It is a shorter story that packs a punch for sure. A story where it will bring emotional characters and suspense together. A story where there is a witness and one phone call made forty years later that could change things. I found this book to be well written, engaging and hard to put down. A fast paced story that kept me coming back for more. There are twists and turns that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The plot has great growth throughout which made the story easy to read. This is an entertaining story that I highly recommend.

Ben O’Rourke and his prep school buddies got way too high at a graduation party and some of his friends raped a drunken girl who was passed out in the upstairs bedroom of the party house. If you seek a journey into a mystical land of long, long ago, you can’t go wrong with this three-in-one. The imagery is amazing. I felt myself transported to an ancient land and an ancient time.

An unusual trilogy of a mystical dystopian, near-future storyline where the characters shapeshift in and out of reality. This is a very interesting read that discusses the topic of climate change with a touch of magical realism. I like that all three novellas are in one package because once you finish one, you will want to start the next. Koerber has such a way with words that she holds your interested til the end. There is such a flow to this story and you really connect with the characters.

A mountain in the air is a refreshing trilogy. This intertwined set of stories are heavily built in fantasy and cause your mind to think and reflect on many abstract concepts of life and death. While reading I found myself doing just that and this enhanced the reading experience. The shape shifting main character in the book has a myriad of adventures in this future world. The way that the author portrays animals and the idea of survival in this dystopian world is very thought provoking. If this is your genre you will enjoy this read.

This book has three novellas called Coyote’s Road Trip, Raven Woman’s Tavern, and A Mountain in the Air. I loved the exquisite descriptions of setting on this novel! Seeing through the animals eyes was interesting and I could vividly see the scenes as the played out. Even though the novellas can stand on their own, they blended beautifully together. This book is highly recommend!

I had never heard of Laura Koerber before coming across this book and I was intrigued by the unique synopsis and the chance to read three of her works in one. The three novellas in order are Coyote’s Road Trip, Raven Woman’s Tavern and A Mountain in the Air. When first meeting Coyote Jim he is seeing the first migraters cross through his territory, the Valley of Dry Bones in Nevada. These people did not leave a good impression on him as they seemed to not care about the land, learning or their own kind. All they cared about was their destination, not the journey. The timeline can be confusing in the beginning as it bounces back and forth between memories of Jim conversing with the ghosts of the only two humans, he ever built a friendship with their death and meeting them. After a radiation leak that forced the humans to move away Joseph and Janey were the last humans in his territory, so he took interests in them. When they passed Coyote no longer had anything keeping him in the Valley of Dry Bones, but it had been his home for as long as he could remember but the climate changes gave him no choice but to go in search of a new home. With his journey taking him to Washington state he finds something he wasn’t looking for but hopes it will be enough. When I first got this book, I was curious how the three novellas worked together as each had a different main character. I then realized that they all led into each other to a degree, Coyote ends his road trip in the timber town where Raven owns a tavern, and Pete lives in the wilderness of Mt. Rainier nearby. At times I felt the story dragged on, but the imagery of the landscapes and the development of each story kept me glued to the pages needing more.

This book consists of 3 novellas all closely connected. The first one called ‘Coyote’s Road Trip’ is about a man named Jim who is also a coyote shapeshifter. Bored with his life, he sets out on a long drive to find his new forever home. Along the way, he meets a young girl named TJ who is hitchhiking. He takes it upon himself to see her safely dropped off with her brother in Rainier. Once getting to Rainier he meets Rachel in an old ghost town with very few tenants. Rachel is also a shapeshifter so instantly the pair get along.
The second novella, ‘Raven Woman’s Tavern’, takes place shortly after the first book. Rachel and her boyfriend Jimmy take it upon themselves to care for the townspeople, supplying medicine, toiletries etc. Some things are bought while others are acquired illegally. So when a troop of militia appears to drink in the tavern, the townspeople are nervous and want them gone ASAP. Once they come back a second time after a wallet disappears from one of the men, Rachel realizes she needs to do more to get rid of them.
The book then focuses on Baylor, the only one in the Militia group who appeared nice. The group becomes abandoned and after not following the leaders orders, he is quickly thrown out of the group. Lost in the woods he finds a raven who seems to be leading him somewhere.
Last but not least the last novella, ‘A Mountain in the Air’. This takes place a couple years after the second book. Settling in nicely, the townspeople are making changes for the better. While acquiring some necessary things to do so, Jim comes across TJ from years prior. He can tell she is not doing too well and invites her to live in the town. Meanwhile, Val seems to be dying and keeps dreaming about a man who disappeared in the 90’s. He went to Mt Rainier never to return. The dreams are so vivid that they have to be real don’t they?
This trilogy was quite interesting. It was written as a day in the life genre with a supernatural element. There are shapeshifters and ghosts mingled in with regular humans coexisting within the same town. Each character had their own personality and reason to be there. The author did a really good job portraying each person.

How can you pass up three books in one? I love how these books give you a different outlook on life. It’s really everything you need. Shapeshifters, dystopia, a great message, wonderful characters, and a fast pace read. I do recommend this book.

Coyote is a nature spirit, a shapeshifter who lives in a valley in the Nevada Desert, he watches life in his territory with a distant interest, he has seen many people pass through his home, but he has never seen as much change in the desert as he has these last few years, so when the last two people he was friends with pass away, coupled with the heat and the drought, he decides to leave the one place he has ever called home.
He sets off North on the only road out of the desert and even though he doesn’t have a destination in mind, something points him in the right direction, just as he is about to leave the desert, he stops for one last look and then turns towards the future.
As he travels, Coyote meets people and experiences different places along the way as he tries to find somewhere new in the Pacific Northwest, but will he find what he is looking for and a new purpose for his existence? In this dystopian sci-fi meets fantasy tale, where the future has been affected by the climate change scientists are just now predicting, this is a journey of self discovery and talks about hard subjects in a manner that all who enjoy this genre of book, it is charming and pulls you through the story to find out how it ends.
Raven Woman’s Tavern.
Raven is a Raven shifter, as her name suggests and she is in charge of the small logging town which has seen better day, but those living within its boundaries have all found themselves there for a reason and kindled a kinship with the others living there. This place, however, is like no other and you will only find your way in or out if Rachel allows it and the road can be as long, short, twisted or straight as she desires, that is until one day when the local Militia find their way in.
All who live there have found there way in unusual circumstances and are not the youngest of pioneers, they have all lived a good life, but like the town have become all but forgotten, they are disconnected from the outside world, but they are happy and make do with what they can, whether that is legally, or by stretching the law, just a little. Baylor is one of these people, although, he isn’t as young as the rest, he has also heard the cry of a raven and followed it, little does he know that this will save his life and that his skills will help this small town survive the turmoil to come.
Can Baylor and the other residents of this small out of the way town keep their way of life, or will the Militia come in and take away everything they are working hard to build? This is a fantastical dystopian take on some pertinent themes including climate change and the flaws and triumphs which combine in all of humanity, while injecting magic and humour throughout in this enchanting novella.
Mountain In The Air.
Pete is a rock star in the prime of his life, he has amassed a loyal, local following with his grungy tunes and it looks like his life is about to take a turn for the better, but one day he takes a walk up Mt. Rainier to clear his head and never comes down, this was in the 1990’s and eventually people stopped searching for him and just forgot, but 40 years later and he is lonely, so he reaches out to anyone he can reach, through their dreams, this is where he calls out to one person in particular without even realising it.
Meanwhile, life in a small logging town carries on and the people living there know that something is coming, they just don’t know when or where, so when a newcomer arrives, it is all hands on deck to help them feel welcome, but will they be able to forget their past life and adapt to this new one, one with little in one way, but a lot in another and with only each other to depend on, their unique talents all work together to help run this last piece of magical land.
What connections can Pete build within his dream walking and will they be the ones he wants, or the ones he needs? This is a magical story of how humanity needs the connections it builds with each other to survive any trials it may come across in this dystopian vision of a future which could come to pass, where reality and magic collide to create an unmissable story.
This is a trilogy which is full of examples of adversity and how it can bring people together, when both newcomers and old troubles come calling into this small town, will the magic surrounding it protect it from the ravages of climate change and humanity in general, or will this breach of their perimeter spell doom for them all? This is a dystopian world which could very much become a reality, if the messages held within are not heeded, as adversity fights for its place in this fantastical world in a way which hooks you from the start and keeps you there until the end.

Raven is a Raven shifter, as her name suggests and she is in charge of the small logging town which has seen better day, but those living within its boundaries have all found themselves there for a reason and kindled a kinship with the others living there. This place, however, is like no other and you will only find your way in or out if Rachel allows it and the road can be as long, short, twisted or straight as she desires, that is until one day when the local Militia find their way in.
All who live there have found there way in unusual circumstances and are not the youngest of pioneers, they have all lived a good life, but like the town have become all but forgotten, they are disconnected from the outside world, but they are happy and make do with what they can, whether that is legally, or by stretching the law, just a little. Baylor is one of these people, although, he isn’t as young as the rest, he has also heard the cry of a raven and followed it, little does he know that this will save his life and that his skills will help this small town survive the turmoil to come.
Can Baylor and the other residents of this small out of the way town keep their way of life, or will the Militia come in and take away everything they are working hard to build? This is a fantastical dystopian take on some pertinent themes including climate change and the flaws and triumphs which combine in all of humanity, while injecting magic and humour throughout in this enchanting novella.

Engaging magical trilogy This is the complete trilogy. The first is a short novella “Coyote’s Road Trip” is a unique story with shapeshifters, drama and mystery based in a dystopian world. It takes the reader on a journey told by Coyote. The author has done a fantastic job of bringing the reader into Coyote’s mind and interweaving the world as interpreted by him. There are a lot of layers to the story that will appeal to many readers from climate change to grief and finding happiness in the smallest of things. “Raven Woman’s Tavern” is a short dark tale which features many characters all trying to survive. I liked the character Raven, she is always observing everyone and everything and has a sense of justice. “A Mountain in the Air” is the third instalment and brings everything together. I felt a lot of emotions reading this one as it draws closer parallels to our world and the struggles with climate change, habitat destruction, survival and animal migration. A worthy read.

This book is three stories in one and they weave together wonderfully. This isn’t a genre I would nearly read but the originality and captivating stories kept me turning the pages. There are quite the array of characters in these stories that make this more interesting and bring you further into the depths of the storylines. The author writes in such a way that I felt I was taken on a majestic journey. The details make it so you feel as though you’re right there in the story. I enjoyed reading these short stories.

A Mountain in the Air is a wonderfully written collection of three short story that will take you on quite the whimsical adventure. Each story is a unique short story that is fast paced . The author does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life and keeping your attention from the beginning till the end. I had a hard time putting it down. I’ve read a few books by this author and this one will definitely go on the reread list. Get ready for quite the magical journey with this Trilogy. I highly recommend reading this to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading more from this Author .

This set of 3 novellas was a wonder to read. It follows 3 characters in each book and each with their own story to tell. It bases on post-climate change. Everything we know of has been changed, and not all of it is good. You have Coyote Jim, Rachel the Raven and Pete. Each has their own trials and hardships and all were interconnected. The writing was fantastic and really drew you in from the get-go and really made you think how climate change has really affected everything around us. Each story was compelling in their own way and had their own unique quirks about them.

Even if this isn’t your usual preference for stories, I promise you will connect with the book and find something to take away from the thought-provoking pages.

This trilogy combines Coyote’s Road Trip, Raven Woman’s Tavern and A Mountain In the Air. I had previously read Coyote’s Road Trip and have been thoroughly impressed. At first I wasn’t as excited to read Raven Woman’s Tavern, but just like the first book in the trilogy I was quickly sucked in. A Mountain In The Air beautifully ties all the stories together and gives the series a sense of completion, with no questions being left in answered. Laura Koerber is an amazing writing, her ability to create a realistic magic and make this dystopian story feel like a premonition is unreal. I thoroughly enjoyed this series and can not wait to see what else she comes up with.
