This book was well written and captivating that I felt like i was reading a book like someone life today. This book was so amazing that it was like I was actually there watching everything unfold in front of me and seeing everything so detailed. This book is extremely fast paced but easy to follow, and I couldn’t put it down. The stories inside were so amazing and interesting characters from shaft shifters, ghosts, talking trees, animals was all the bit captivating in their own little way. this book really brought the other books together and highly recommend reading them.

A Mountain in the Air: A Trilogy by Laura Koerber. This is a trilogy in one book and its very important you read them in order to totally understand. I really loved it. Its a dystopian, supernatural trilogy with shape shifters. Its the story of Coyote Jim who is a shape shifter and he spends most of his time in human form. His home has always been the desert but when climate changes destroys the desert he sets off to find a new home. On the way he meets all kinds of characters. He finds all kinds of stuff out about himself and others. Love, life and self discovery. In Raven Woman’s Tavern we meet Rachel the Raven woman who is a shape shifter and lives among survivalists. In the 3rd story we meet Jim the musician who chose to disappear in the mountains not wanting fame. This trilogy is written so well that you feel as if you are actually in the desert or mountains. Its full of mystery, magic and shape shifting. It will keep you reading late in the night.

An original trilogy with an intriguing storyline, the book consists of three connected novellas, set in a near future, dystopian world. In this dystopian fantasy the world has been ravaged by climate change, and this world has been brought vividly to life through the descriptive narrative. The story is full of unique characters, such as coyote shapeshifter and guardian spirit Jim. Jim is forced to leave his home due to the heat and drought, who travels through the Pacific Northwest searching for a new home.
Meanwhile, Rachel the Raven lives and runs a tavern in a dying timber town. She helps to protect the small community around her, a group of elderly survivalists. Then there is grunge musician Pete, who used to have a local following before disappearing into the wilderness of Mt. Rainier forty years ago. Feeling lonely he starts to reach out to people, in their dreams. This is an enjoyable and engaging read with interesting characters all of whom have a story to tell. The trilogy kept me hooked from start to finish, and I would definitely recommend it.

I enjoyed this novel, as it completes the story of Coyote Jim by combining three novellas into one book. These stories have a very spiritual message. I really enjoyed the book and the message from the author. The author has developed a very interesting landscape and characters. The message is important and I think many people will enjoy the story.

This is a great collection that ties together three novellas. They are really well written and detailed, the authors interest and passion clearly coming through on each page. Although they are all short stories, they are fast paced and have the right amount of suspense for this type of story. The author has created some truly interesting characters. They show shape shifters from a different perspective and really get you, as the reader thinking. They are likeable and relatable. These books felt different to others I have read by this author and I found them thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a collection of three books. Coyote’s Road Trip, Raven Woman’s Tavern and A Mountain In The Air. Each book is beautifully unique and the authors writing is so beautiful and descriptive that you feel drawn away into the world where magic and real life exist. I do recommend reading the books in order you can fully understand the characters as they do repeat and appear in each story. The author deals with subject such as climate change and how our future could look. In the last book you see the completion of the previous 2 books with all your questions being answered. For me the last book was a very emotional read as it dealt with death but it was still beautifully written. If you would like to read a tale which could be a glimpse of our future written in a way that will transport you with beautiful words then these books are definately a good read.

3.5 stars A Mountain in the Air trilogy is three books in one. The first two novellas were previously published as Coyote’s Road Trip and Raven Woman’s Tavern. The third is brand new. Coyote’s Road Trip is a blend of magical realism and set in a dystopian future. It is a short and unique tale as with Laura’s other books along this line. This story touches on the topic of climate change and its effects on the world. The mysterious Coyote Jim is a shapeshifter nature spirit as old as time. He gets up to mischief both good and bad but he is not intentionally malicious or out to hurt others. He has decided it’s time seeking to find and establish a new home. What ensues is truly an interesting road trip. Raven Woman’s Tavern is set in a future that could well become a reality. This dark tale is a quick read, and I felt the story was a little disjointed and unfinished in some instances. Overall, the premise is interesting and there are a lot of players and different aspects being played out. Raven is not what she seems. She is always around and watches everything. She is all knowing, and all seeing and hands out life and death as she sees fit. But that is only part of the story the rest is about people trying to survive in small town on the fringes and a world that has been ravished and where the militia are the law. A Mountain in the Air is also a magical realism tale and brings the stories together and to completion where any unresolved questions are answered. This novella as like the other two are set in a near future ravaged by climate change and combines characters connected from both Coyote’s Road Trip and Raven Woman’s Tavern. It is a bit of an emotional tale, a story of being at a liminal space, a transitional space, a “crossroads”, a story of life and death.

Coyote Jim is a shapeshifter who spends most of his time in the human form. He has lived in the desert all of his life but when climate change destroys all he knows he sets off in his truck in search of a new home. Along the way he meets numerous people and discovers they are also searching for better lives. In Coyote Jim’s journey of self discovery, he also finds love and hope.
Raven Woman’s Tavern is set in the near future in an abandoned mining town that is occupied by a small group of survivalists eking out a meagre existence. The story is centered on Rachel the Raven Woman, a shapeshifter, and her tavern. Many, but not all, of the community’s citizens are law abiding folks.
The third novella is focused on a musician named Pete who had a following back in the 1990’s but chose to disappear into the mountains. After forty years of living in solace he finds himself lonely and decides to approach people through their dreams.
Raven Woman’s Tavern was the first book that I read by this author, and I loved it. When I saw the trilogy available with three novellas included, I knew that I needed to read it. The novellas all gave a glimpse into how lives would be if we were suddenly stripped of all the modern conveniences, we have grown accustomed to having and often take for granted. This is something that I have though of often and found myself wanting a simpler life. Learning to fend for myself and be more self sustainable started with growing and canning my own food. These are skills that seem to have become lost through the years and I am hoping to pass these skills onto the next generation. Every year I build up on my skills and knowledge of plants and of being self-sustainable.
All three novellas include shapeshifting, magical realism, drama, and all contain the underlying important message about the havoc wreaked on the world by climate change. The author did a marvelous job of describing the characters, their lives, and the worlds they were struggling to survive in. The author’s description of a dystopian world ravaged by climate change really makes the reader more aware of the damage and pollution we are all part of creating. Unless we learn to stop destroying the earth we are destined to live in a world like the characters in the novellas. The world where fields of wildflowers grow on the mountain as far as the eye can see is the world I want to leave for future generations. Kudos to the author for bringing such an important topic to light. A great read!

This is a great collection of three short stories by this author. I have enjoyed reading this author from the first book I picked up. They are each unique from each other and well written. The author’s use of details made each story as well as characters come to life. There is a bit of suspense added which makes them entertaining to read. They are fast paced and easy to read. The characters are relatable and added to each story. I really enjoyed this collection and I highly recommend it

This trilogy has been one of the best. Reading about Coyote and nature just leaves you with an indescribable feeling. This author has a way of writing that leaves you feeling like you are in the desert in with him. And the ghosts, Janey and her father, that’s just trippey. I can’t even imagine. I love the baby goat in the this adventure. It’s a really good book that has just what you need. I found my enthralled from the start. I have read the series from book 1. I do recommend it. It makes it easier to follow and it’s a lovely series. I love the native folklore touch to it. A definite must read.This trilogy has been one of the best. Coyote meets several people during the book though these don’t seem to last the presentation of this book is dull and sad the way the characters are portrayed and how most people are just playing the part on a chess board. This dystopian story carries many different tales. I really enjoyed this fantasy book.

Coyote leaving his home of the desert that he has known his entire lifetimes, ends up picking up a couple of hitchhikers that were once his neighbors. They decide to head to the Pacific Northwest and along way discover that life and death is not what it appears to be. Upon arriving at his destination, coyote finds that it is not everything he had hoped it would be but makes he best of his new life meeting some quirky and misunderstood characters to become a part of their community. He also meets another soul like his named Raven and begins to understand in an odd way what community is and his role he plays in one. This book was such a great read. A real story that is thought-provoking and unashamed to tell it like life truly is. I truly enjoyed the fantasy and ancestral side of the book. It serves as a good reminder that all is not what it seems to appear and to just follow our instincts to see where they lead. I appreciate the Native American ideas and spirit throughout the book and truly enjoyed the quick and interesting read that it was. Looking forward to learning more about Raven!

This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Coyote’s Road Trip is a fantastic read. It’s entertaining and we get to see a coyote shapeshifter.
Jim is our coyote shifter in the story. His neighbors commit suicide and he does a goodbye for them. Now he’s stuck with two ghosts and traveling. He doesn’t know exactly where he’s going, but it’s got to be better than where he’s coming from. The quote I chose for Jim is: “Not around here.” I tried another sip and made another face. “Look, people believe all kinds of crap. I just know that most of its BS. Nature spirits are real. There used to be water spirits around before so many of the marshes dried up. Stars are just stars but there’s something holy about them too. Bones. Mountains. I don’t understand all this religious stuff either. How do you expect me to have all the answers? You’re ghosts. That hasn’t given you any great insights, has it?”

From beginning to end this story is beautiful. Although this is a story about Coyote, the shape shifter spirit…. this story is so human. The story takes place in a dystopian world affected by climate change and follows Coyote as he leaves everything behind to take a soul searching journey, or a walkabout as I like to call it. Along his journey we meet different characters and hear their stories, and although they don’t stick around for long they leave a lasting impression. The author has managed to tell a riveting story that makes magic feel like it’s real and made Coyote feel so relatable. He is funny and complex and unpredictable. I truly enjoyed Coyote. Like I really want to gush about him because of how well written his character was. This is a rare talent in authors and I really fell in love with him. Did I say this story was beautiful? This was a quick read, and it pulls you in from the start to finish. This is a 5 star book for me.

Coyote Jim is indeed an interesting character. I’m not sure if I’ve read a book like this before, so it took me a moment to get in the groove of reading it. His journey is in the title. He leaves his home to go on a road trip to see where to go and belong in the world. He starts out with familiar spirits that tag along with him and meets others on the way. For a spirit person, I give him credit for what he’s experienced and how he lives in the modern world. If you like Dystopian spirit books, give this one a go.

This was a very good shorter paranormal story. I normally enjoy paranormal and dystopian books but I was skeptical about this one. The idea seemed odd. But I was pleasantly surprised. I really took a liking to Coyote Jim from the beginning. He’s trying to find his purpose in life and we get to go along on his journey while things aren’t great in the world. We meet some interesting characters along the way as well. Overall I think this is a really good book.

Coyote’s Road Trip is the prequel to Raven Woman’s Tavern, and takes the reader on a journey told by Coyote. The author has done a fantastic job of bringing the reader into Coyote’s mind and interweaving the world as interpreted by him. There are a lot of layers to the story that will appeal to many readers from climate change to grief and finding happiness in the smallest of things.

Quick read, but not short on entertainment, humor, grief or captivating characters. This book touches on climate change, the changes in the world that is causing droughts and deaths. It also reminds me a lot of native American coyotes stories and spirits I have heard before even though this author clearly states in the beginning of the book that this is not based of off any indigenous groups. Maybe this is just where the author pulled her inspiration from when writing this book.
This paranormal character coyotes ventures out of a sad, dry, empty desert valley of Nevada. As Coyote searches for a new home, he finds new friends and beauty in the most unlikely places throughout his journey. Beauty is defined in the book as more of necessities like water, shelter and food. This book is and can be very dark, moody and sad but the author does a great job of balancing it out with lightness and humor.
Coyote has a lot of depth to his character, Laura did such an amazing job writing, storytelling and growing this character throughout the book. Not only does the story go together seamlessly, she also does a phenomenal job describing the landscape, places and feelings of Coyote and the world that he lives in as he makes his travels across the Pacific Northwest to find his new home. Laura completely engulfed me in this story and had me finishing this book in one sitting.
This is not normally a genre of books I would read, but I am so glad I ventured out and read this story. I highly recommend and will definitely be reading more from this author.

Although quite a short book this was definitely an enjoyable one. I was caught up in the story and the main character. He seems to go on such a journey and I really became engaged with him. Coyote Jim is a shapeshifter, who is trying to find his way in life. This story is told while he is on a road trip. This story is told in first person and all the characters are connectable, and relatable. It’s a dystopian story, magical and paranormal. I truly enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this Author.

A quick read that winds like a road. A very dystopian-style read that hints at Native American storytelling roots that takes the reader along like the shotgun rider in a vehicle. The attention to detail is nice as we follow along with the movements and shifts of Coyote and all of the chaos that ensues with it all. A lovely example of neutral chaos with a classical tease that is neither good nor evil. Coyote is a loveable and respected character with a glint of mischief hiding in his eyes. The writing style is very different but quickly appreciated, and overall an easy read. The wind and turns quickly hold the reader and the attention to detail, as well as the storyline, pull the reader in easily.

This is not my first book by this author, and it won’t be my last, somehow I am always pulled right into these books. In this story we have Jim going on a journey of finding himself really, and the different people Jim meets along the way. The cast of characters are interesting but Janey and her father stuck out to me the most. The way Jim describes the scene with the two really broke my heart, but it was also sort of beautiful at the same time. Rachel also stood out to me, I like that Jim found his ending for now alongside Rachel. There were moments I found myself chuckling, such as the farting scene and just all around enjoying the journey along with Jim. I look forward to more from this brilliant author.

Coyote is a nature spirit, a shapeshifter who lives in a valley in the Nevada Desert, he watches life in his territory with a distant interest, he has seen many people pass through his home, but he has never seen as much change in the desert as he has these last few years, so when the last two people he was friends with pass away, coupled with the heat and the drought, he decides to leave the one place he has ever called home.
He sets off North on the only road out of the desert and even though he doesn’t have a destination in mind, something points him in the right direction, just as he is about to leave the desert, he stops for one last look and then turns towards the future.
As he travels, Coyote meets people and experiences different places along the way as he tries to find somewhere new in the Pacific Northwest, but will he find what he is looking for and a new purpose for his existence? In this dystopian sci-fi meets fantasy tale, where the future has been affected by the climate change scientists are just now predicting, this is a journey of self discovery and talks about hard subjects in a manner that all who enjoy this genre of book, it is charming and pulls you through the story to find out how it ends.

Coyote’s Road Trip by Laura Koerber is the prequel to Raven Woman’s Tavern. It is a dystopian story with magical realism, paranormal elements, drama, messages on climate change, mythology, and more. This is an original and interesting story with thought provoking elements. And as Ms. Koerber always manages to do, she weaves her story in a way that takes the reader on a journey, while also giving them pause for thought. There’s always more to her characters and storyline than first meets the eye. Happy Reading!

I enjoyed this. My first book from this author. I really enjoy dystopian books, and this was far different that all the action packed others I’ve read. It was like a nice walk through the woods. It was a quick read, not entirely disappointed, with it was a bit longer.
