Pharaoh’s Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mysteries Book 4) by Ellen Butler – Review by Liz Vrchota

Pharaoh's Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4)Pharaoh’s Forgery by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really have enjoyed the Karina Cardinal Mysteries books but this one has to have taken the cake and made my absolute favorite one so far. Even though this is the fourth book in the series, these could probably be read as standalones, you will be hooked after the first read though I can promise you that. This one is a wild ride and I really loved the small vacation setting that Butler took me to this time. She has a knack for building the world and scenery so well and vivid that I feel as if I am right there with the characters.

This time we found KC as she was about to go on a much needed vacay with her sister. Of course nothing goes to plan as usual and her sister breaks her leg and can no longer join her on the vacation to Cancun. Fate throws in at the last minute Rodrigo, a coworker and friend of KC’s, and the two embark on quite the adventure and mystery in Cancun. I love the intrigue and the building of suspense in this one and found myself reading well past my bedtime to finish this novel and figure out how things will work out for KC. I am so anxious to see what adventure we will get in the next book!

Pharaoh’s Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mysteries Book 4) by Ellen Butler – Review by Angela Hayes

Pharaoh's Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4)Pharaoh’s Forgery by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pharaoh’s Forgery is the fourth book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series by Ellen Butler. WOW, this series just seems to get better with each new instalment- this is definitely one of my top two picks of the series, so far.
I love a riveting mystery- something Ms. Butler does incredibly well. I love that her stories always keep me wondering what will happen next- and expecting danger with every turn of the page. Her books are always full of suspense, drama, danger, intrigue, tension, action, and even a little adventure.
Her books are a definite ‘one-click’-no-questions-asked…. I don’t even have to read the burb because I just know I am going to love it. As expected, this story definitely didn’t disappoint.
Even though this is the fourth book in the series, it could be read as a standalone- without feeling like you are lost or missing anything. But having said that, I really do recommend reading the previous three books first, because not only would you be denying yourself some really great stories- there are some recurring characters that appear in each instalment, so having the character introductions/details, backstories, and other interesting information would really enhance your overall reading experience.
Karina Cardinal (K.C) has been through quite a lot recently and is in dire need of a vacation. She’s really looking forward to cocktails, blue skies, and the sunny beaches of Cancun- and having her sister with her for a girls get-away. But you know what they say about the best laid plans- as she discovers when her sister breaks a leg and has to cancel. Now it looks like K.C will be holidaying alone- until good friend and co-worker Rodrigo steps in to ensure she doesn’t have to cancel or go alone. But, if you have been following the series, you know that nothing is ever quite that simple and that K.C seems to attract trouble to her like a magnet- so, what should have been a simple favour for her elderly neighbour, turns quite dangerous- with K.C and Rodrigo caught in the middle. Their ‘adventures’ made for quite a gripping and engrossing read!
I can’t wait for more Karina Cardinal mysteries!

Thank you, Ms. Butler!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Dead Man Speaks (A Clive January Mystery Book 1) by Lisa Jones Gentry is a crime, mystery and thriller all rolled into one and is a good start to the series. The plot was done well and is interesting and the characters are well developed. There are paranormal aspects and a little twist to the story that make it pop. The Detective is on the case and his track record shows him to be able to solve the unsolvable, but he will need the help of the victim to find a killer.

This was an awesome story. I love ghost stories, especially when there is a mystery around it. Lisa Jones Gentry did a great job writing this story. For me at least, there was no confusion about what was happening. The characters are fully developed and personable. The plot of the story is intriguing. Clive, who was well todo, got shot and killed. That is when the story begins. Clive was an investment banker. He wants to find his killer. That is when it becomes interesting. Clive teams up with Detective Bob to help solve a murder. There are feelings and obstacles that Clive needs to get done to be able to move on. I highly recommend this book to see what exactly happens to Clive and Detective Bob.

Vanishing Day is the fourth book in The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson. This is a mystery series- with tension, drama, danger, intrigue, and suspense.
Logan McKenna has been through a lot over the course of the series- but this book plunges her back into peril- with her facing yet more danger as she tries to help her new neighbour and her young daughter.
This series does seem to get better with each new addition. Although I did have a few issues with this story- they didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment of the story.

Thank you, Valerie Davisson!

Dare Game (The Irish Garda Files Book 1)
By Melinda Colt
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book Dare Game (The Irish Garda Files Book 1) by Melinda Colt. It is a mystery/crime story that has an amazing storyline and characters. One of the characters that I liked is Detective John O’Sullivan. His work at one crime scene expands when other crimes with the same MO are found all over the world. John is a man who when he gets a case, has a fierce determination to find the killer and bring them to justice. All while giving a sense of closure to the victim’s families. John is good at his job and is empathetic when he needs to be. Another wonderful character is Amber Reed. She is a mother who has learned that her teenage daughter has gotten caught up in a world of crime that John is trying to uncover. She is a mother who cares for her daughter and will do anything to keep her safe. Both John and Amber’s characters are well developed, and I found myself caring about them with each chapter that I read. I was rooting for John’s success in finding those who are part of a scheme that involves murder. The storyline is one that kept my interest all the way through. There is not a dull moment. The author has done an amazing job of weaving a tale that I just couldn’t put down until the final page. Don’t miss out on a suspenseful story that will have you reading far into the night. I highly recommend it.

I loved reading the book VANISHING DAY (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 4) by Valerie Davisson. It is a story that once I started, I was hooked. It is a book that includes mystery, suspense, and danger. The more stories that I read in this series, the more I grow to love the character of Logan. She is a woman who is intelligent, strong-willed, and once she is faced with a mystery is determined to find out the truth. This book has Logan’s neighbor attacked with her three-year-old daughter the only witness. Logan may hold a clue to that attack. Is the attacker going to now come after Logan? Logan’s neighbor is in the ICU. Will she recover? Read this book to find out what happens. This is a story that had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. The author writes with such detail that I feel like I am right there with the characters. Some of the additional characters in this book have been brought forward from the first three stories. Logan has a wonderful group of friends who care about her. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting and entertaining. I highly recommend reading it.

This is the fourth book in this series. I have read all the books in this series and they just keep getting better and better. They bring action, suspense and mystery to a new level. This is a well developed story that has characters that bring the story alive. I was pulled into this story right from the beginning and was kept engaged to the end. It is a fast paced story that has twists and turns that kept me turning pages. The characters are connectable and supportive of each other. Logan is back in another investigation. This time she finds that her friend isn’t who she says she is. As her new neighbor clings to life in the hospital, Logan is trying to draw out the killer. The deeper she digs and the deeper she gets and she just may not find her way back out. You don’t want to miss Logan in another suspenseful investigation looking for a killer. Logan is one of my favorite characters. She is strong, determined and nothing gets in her way of finding what she wants. I highly suggest reading the previous books in this series to get to know Logan more. This is an entertaining story that I highly recommend.

Devil’s Claw is the third book in Valerie Davisson’s Logan McKenna series as well as the third book I’ve raad by this author. I’ve said it before but I will repeat myself again, I truly enjoy Logan as a strong female lead and this time around I enjoyed the inclusion of her daughter as well. While any of these books can be read as stand alone reads, I recommend reading in order. Not only does this allow for more character depth, the books really are worth it.
Valerie Davisson has a way of bringing real life issues to light while delivering a story that is filled with enough action and intrigue to keep you turning from first page to last. I truly look forward to more from this author… and more Logan McKenna. 4 out of 5 stars for sure!

Devil’s Claw is the third book in the Logan McKenna series by Valerie Davisson. This series keeps getting better and better. This book found Logan in the middle of a mystery. Logan and her daughter, Amy, found a baby otter pup and take it to the Sea Otter Center, and that is where all of the mayhem begins. This story had me up all night because I had to find out how this book ended. If you like book with action, adventure, mystery and did I mention, baby otters, this is the book for you. So far this is my favorite of the series. It is interesting and kept me turning pages. I loved the whole storyline. Her daughter coming back, the otter sanctuary and the land grabbers. There is also murder, back stabbing, cute little otters and great beach views. Logan, Ben, Amy and Liam were wonderful.

I did get thrown off when we started getting Gary’s (lawyer) whole story. Not sure why we needed it other than to show desperation.

Overall it’s a solid story.

The characters are connectable and I really enjoyed them. They are strong and made the story feel real. This is a story about Inspector John who finds a dead body. Is there more to this than meets the eye? What will happen when his investigation leads him to Amber and her daughter? The twists and turns had me guessing to the end. Devil’s Claw is the third book in Valerie Davisson’s Logan McKenna series. You can read it as a standalone as it has its own ‘story’ but like with any other series, I feel that one should start from the beginning as every book builds upon the previous one when it comes to the characters that are there from one book to the other.
I loved the opening to the story – having an old man reflecting on his life and writing a letter that would have an impact 40 years later … powerful. Also, I lover Pacific Northwest so the detailed description of the nature and the maritime life, especially the otters … such a treat! Obviously as it is Logan McKenna story, it means there is a violent death that brings along so many different layers of human nature – we get thrown into greed, personal loss while we also have the hope through the community keeping together and the trust and love we find there …
Welcome to the fight for the Lot 429!

I give Rose by Any Other Name (The Sisters, Texas Mystery Series, Book 10) by Becki Willis, 5 stars.

I loved this book!! I had only read the first book in the series before I picked up this one, so I missed what went on in between, but the author did a great job of making me feel like I didn’t miss a thing. The characters are what really make this series so good. All of the ones you love are back, as well as some new ones. This is a cozy mystery book that will keep you guessing until the end. I had an idea, but didn’t know exactly what was going on, and was definitely surprised at the end. I love that in a whodunit!! What makes this exceptional to me was getting the teenagers in on their own mystery. It wasn’t added as an afterthought or just to pull in younger readers. This was blended into the book in such a way that had you guessing which mystery was more important. I absolutely loved this. The teens are smart and hard-working — they don’t expect the adults to do everything, but at the same time they know when to ask for help.

These mysteries together made for an exceptional book that I could not put down. I will definitely be reading more from this series.

I cannot believe I have not read any of the others in this series. Becki Willis is a mastermind. In this book there are technically two mysteries going on at the same time. The stories flowed well together that I never got the two mysteries confused. The characters do make up the stories. They are complex and fully developed. The first mystery is a new woman is moving into the town and all the women are trying to figure her out. They want to know everything about this newcomer. The second story is about Blake and his summer job. He gathers up his sisters and forms a junior detective group. I loved reading the book Pharaoh’s Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4) by Ellen Butler. It is a story that includes mystery, danger, as well as twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. It is a book that had me hooked from the very beginning. I love the character of Karina Cardinal. She is a woman who is strong, intelligent, and independent. Her boyfriend Mike believes that she always gets herself into sticky situations. This story has Karina going to Cancun. She is asked to bring a package along with her. Sounds easy right? What happens when she is in Cancun has her wondering what has happened to her well-deserved vacation. Read this book to find out what happens. This is a story that had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. There is never a dull moment in the situations that Karina finds herself in. I also enjoyed reading about the additional characters that are introduced. Some of them have been brought forward from previous books such as Mike and Rodrigo. Others have a selfish agenda that they will try at all costs to make happen. Don’t miss out on an exciting and entertaining story that you won’t be able to put down until the final page. I highly recommend reading it.

Devil’s Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery/Thriller Book 3 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson is a cosy mystery and we are once again immersed in Logan’s story. Valerie has given us a complex plot but it is believable and well written. This one is my favourite so far in the series. My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book three in Davisson’s ‘Logan McKenna Mystery Series’ and having read the previous two novels in the series I was looking forward to this one and was definitely not disappointed. Back with our fearless and extremely likeable and relatable independent heroine Logan McKenna I felt as though I was back with an old friend, as she has another mystery to solve. This novel sees Logan at a good point in her life, with a new job, plenty of time for her love of music and with daughter Amy home, Logan feels that her new life is just beginning.
Logan and Amy rescue an orphaned sea otter pup and this leads them to Jasper’s Sea Otter Centre where they help nurse the pup back to health. The Sea Otter Centre soon gets swept up in the property claim of Lot 429, a stretch of gorgeous coastal property which a lot of powerful players have their sights on including two fighting half siblings. When this leads to a murder of someone close to Logan, she begins to investigate and discovers resentments, greed and painful loss attached to Lot 429. The community must step up and help stop the killer before they strike again and before Logan herself becomes their next victim.
This was Logan’s third mystery and I was hooked from page one and the story kept me gripped until the very last page. The storyline was action packed and fast paced with a plot that kept me guessing until the end. The characters are all well defined and fascinating in their own right but Logan really does hold the story together, for me. It can be read as a standalone novel but the reader will have a better understanding of Logan’s backstory if the series is read in order. I look forward to future books in this exciting series.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Dead Man Speaks (A Clive January Mystery Book 1) by Lisa Jones Gentry is an original story- with plenty to keep you flipping the pages. A mystery with a paranormal edge- detailing crime, investigation, drama, and a clever twist that made me sit up and take notice.
Clive January is a Wall Street investment banker who makes the startling realization that he has been shot, dead! Having such a significant unresolved issue, Clive cannot find peace until he gets his closure. But being dead is kind of restricting- so this is where Detective Bob Greene comes into the picture. It’s through him, and their psychic connection, that the investigation unfolds. But there is much more to the characters, their situation/s, and story, than we first realise- which we discover along the way.
Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Jones-Gentry does next.

There is a prime real estate spot, Lot 429, there are alot of interested parties but what will happen?

The book opens with a great lure into the story which will make you want to keep reading to uncover the truths and the mystery around the elusive plot 429. As the story weaves through you are introduced to great characters which have you wondering and thinking what is there motives regarding everything. Devil's Claw: Logan Book 3 (The Logan McKenna Series)Devil’s Claw: Logan Book 3 by Valerie Davisson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This sets out in the perfect suspenseful mystery. I loved the start with Logan and her daughter. I found their scenes adorable with the little sea otter to boot. The characters are easy to love but the mystery that surrounds Lot 429 is impeccably written. The theme itself that surrounds the story is also a very good pace for a book of this stature. Of all in this series, I have never been disappointed yet as to what this author has to offer!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Devil’s Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery/Thriller Book 3 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson. This author has truly risen to some of my top favorites. This series keeps giving and I love everything it’s got to give. From the drama and mystery to its bits of adventure I love getting lost in its pages with each character. The characters are complex and well developed, pulling readers in completely and making them one not want it to end and two coming back for more and more. I found myself on the edge of my seat trying to read faster and slower all at once. Even the smallest details are focused on and well developed. I like the authors writing style and I I can wait to see where this author takes readers next. Four big stars and highly recommended!

A DEAD MAN SPEAKS (A CLIVE JANUARY MYSTERY BOOK 1) by LISA JONES GENTRY – Review by Kandy Garrett

A Dead Man SpeaksA Dead Man Speaks by Lisa Jones Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The way this book was written was captivating. I liked the timeline of the way the events were portrayed. This was a very eye opening story with the state of the world today and seeing the views in a different perspective, to me, is always a positive thing. Lisa did a fantastic job creating the characters and the city’s and town’s we visited through out this story. If you are looking for a story that is more real life than not, mysterious, has characters you think you may have known if a past life, this is definitely a read for you.
