My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The way this book was written was captivating. I liked the timeline of the way the events were portrayed. This was a very eye opening story with the state of the world today and seeing the views in a different perspective, to me, is always a positive thing. Lisa did a fantastic job creating the characters and the city’s and town’s we visited through out this story. If you are looking for a story that is more real life than not, mysterious, has characters you think you may have known if a past life, this is definitely a read for you.

Devil's Claw: Logan Book 3 (The Logan McKenna Series)Devil’s Claw: Logan Book 3 by Valerie Davisson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Devil’s Claw by Valerie Davisson is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery/Thriller series. This book can be read as a standalone although it follows the same character so you might want to read the previous 2 first to get the overall build up.
This book is a great addition to the series and just as fast paced and exciting as the other two. The story is complex and interesting and you are drawn into it from the very beginning. I found myself flying through the book, desperate to find out what was going on and what was going to happen.
I loved getting back into the character of Logan. It is always so easy to become engaged with this character again which I think is partly why this series is such a good one. This book has left me just wanting more of them and I cannot wait to see what else is to come.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the fourth book in this series. I think this series just keeps getting better and better with every book. I enjoyed how well written this story is. The characters bring the story to life with the mystery and action. I found this book to be engaging and fast paced. I had no problems connecting with the character as they kept me turning pages. In this story Karina is back with another mystery. She gets the opportunity to go to Mexico for some fun and drop a package off. But things don’t go as planned for the drop off. What happens next you will want to read this book. I really enjoyed the characters, they are strong and made me feel as if I was right with them. They made the story for me. I highly recommend this book.

After some of Karina Cardinal’s recent adventures—her lover Mike Finnegan would call them scrapes, jams, or pickles—she’s more than ready to blow this D.C. pop stand for a short girls’ trip to Mexico. Until Jillian’s roller skate wreck blows their plan out of the water.

With Jilly injured and Mike working, her fellow lobbyist Rodrigo volunteers to share some sun, sand, and margaritas in Cancun. It’s tough to relax, though, knowing what’s in her suitcase. A package she promised to hand off to Mrs. Thundermuffin in Mexico.

Mrs. T’s evasive maneuvers around Karina’s questions wave more red flags than a bullfighter, leaving Karina no choice but to take a peek. Okay, so it’s not a kilo of something illegal. It’s an Egyptian death mask that turns out to be a magnet for crooks, conmen, kidnappers, and outright killers.

When the situation explodes into chaos, Karina and Rodrigo are lucky to have friends in the right place—at their backs. But they’re in one hell of a jam. And they could be going home in something tackier than a souvenir t-shirt—more like a body bag.

International bestselling and award-winning author Ellen Butler presents book four in the Karina Cardinal mystery series! Fans of Melinda Leigh, J.D. Robb, and Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum will adore this gripping mystery adventure.

This is my first read by this author and I was skeptical I’d like the book but was I wrong! once I started I couldn’t put it down. I would have to say that this is one of my favorites from Valerie Davisson. Her writing style is what holds my attention from the first page until the last. You need to pay attention to your surroundings because you may be missing so clues to assist you in the mystery. The story is about the property that is in high demand. Logan has a new murder to investigate. The characters are what keeps this thriller alive. It was quite dark when I finish and the little hairs on the back of my neck were standing on edge. I wanted Logan to help me get through the aftermath of the murder. Logan is a great character who has grown with every murder. I highly recommend this book for you to grow with Logan as well.

Devil’s Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery #3 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson

Davisson has really done it again. This book is phenomenal and I really hope there’s more to the series. This is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery Series.

Logan is happy to have her daughter home although not how she wanted. When she gets the call from her daughter that she found otters Logan rushes to help her. Ben is still in her life and she couldn’t be happier.

Amy goes to the Otter Sanctuary only to find that something had happened. Logan gets worried when she doesn’t hear from Amy so she rushes to be by her daughter’s side. The quote I chose for Logan is: “You and Mike are great parents. You’ve given Haley a solid foundation. You’re doing all the right things. You’re giving her the chance to grow up. It’s going to be up to Haley. If it’s any consolation, I think she’s a great kid.”

Highly recommended for lovers of crime and drama.

Rose by Any Other Name (The Sisters, Texas Series, Book 10) by Becki Willis – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Rose by Any Other Name (The Sisters, Texas #10)Rose by Any Other Name by Becki Willis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was gripped from page one by this novel which has drama, crime, suspense, romance and mystery as well as great characters. Based in a small town, ‘The Sisters’, during a long hot Texas summer a mysterious new comer arrives in the community and instantly the gossip starts. No one knows who Rose Belvedere is or why she has chosen The Sisters as a place to live but the locals are sure that a body was put into her moving van. Chief Brash deCordova’s police department is over run with calls all saying the same thing but without probable cause all he can do is make inquiries. However when Madison, from ‘In a Pinch Professional Services’ who is known as being a “dead-body magnet”, does find a body her husband, the Chief must investigate the murder. Meanwhile sixteen year old Blake has a summer job and finds himself in the middle of his own mystery to solve. Along with his sisters they decide to form a junior section of “In a Pinch Professional Services” would be sleuths.
This is a wonderfully written cozy mystery which kept me hooked from beginning to end and with all the twists and turns it also kept me guessing. The storyline flows nicely making it an easy read and the plot has plenty going on which kept me fully immersed in the story. I loved all the main characters, who are part of Madison’s, ‘In a Pinch Professional Services’ and thought that the husband and wife duo of Madison and the Chief were a perfect crime solving couple who worked well together to discover the killer before they could strike again.
Although it is book ten of a series it can be read as a standalone story, however, as I was new to this author and this series I did feel that I would have understood Madison’s backstory better and learnt how ‘In a Pinch’ came into being if I had read the previous books first. I think if the books are read in order than the reader may enjoy this novel even more and would get to know all the fascinating characters. Having enjoyed this book I am now keen to read the previous novels in this series and am pleased to have discovered a new author.

This is book 3 in the Logan Mckenna series. This books is just as good as the first two. Packed full of adventure, mystery  and edge of your seat action.

Logan Mckenna is back. Her life is moving forward. With her new job and her new life and love everything seems to be on the right track finally.

That is until someone close to Logan is murdered. When some land comes up for auction there is a lot of conflict over it. What is so special about this land and how far will people go to get their hands on it?

As a community pulls together to catch and stop a murderer do they become more deadly than the murderer.

I love the authors writing. The way of writing creates the scenes for you so you actually feel that you are there. Its also nice to have a strong independent female lead character.

5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book A Dead Man Speaks (A Clive January Mystery Book 1) by Lisa Jones Gentry. It is a story that once I started it, I was hooked. The author does an amazing job of making both the storyline and the characters come to life. It is a story about a man who was shot and killed and the journey that follows to find his killer. I enjoyed reading about and trying to understand the man who was Clive January. His life was a hard one with many obstacles and sadness. It is also the story of Detective Bob. He is charged with finding out who killed Clive. He is a man that is known to solve cases that others considered unsolvable. This is a story that includes strong emotions and also times of hatred and racism. The story is very powerful, and I found myself thinking about it even after I had finished the last page. Will Clive’s murder be solved? Read this book to find out. I highly recommend it.

DEVIL’S CLAW (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 3) by Valerie Davisson. This is an amazing book. I have loved these books and this is probably my favorite. This book reminded me of one of my favorite authors James Patterson. Its the story of Logan McKenna and her daughter who has come home from Africa. Logan has been left some coastal property along with her 1/2 sibling. The problem is someone else wants the property so badly that they will commit murder to have it. As Amy and her mom nurse a baby sea otter back to health we learn a ton about Sea Otters and their habitats. When someone Logan is close to is murdered she learns of long held resentment from someone that she had no clue was upset. Will this killer kill again before they figure out who it is? Will the property left to Logan be worth all the greed, loss of life and pain? Read Devil’s Claw to find out!

This was a great mystery story, that kept you gripped. It is set in a small town and really captures the essence of that with all the locals gossiping and reporting to the police.

There is a new arrival to The Sisters and her arrival causes a bit of a stir. Rose is the new person in town. She seems nice enough but can looks be deceiving?

When Brash the local police officer gets numerous calls regarding a supposed dead body wrapped in a carpet he goes to investigate. Finding nothing that leads him to believe that’s true he moves on putting it down to the residents imaginations.

That is until his wife finds a dead body. Does this mean that all the residents where right in what they saw? Could the dead body really have left Rose’s house wrapped in a rug? Who is Rose and why has she moved to The Sisters. With so many questions and not a lot of answer Brash involves his wife and her friends as undercover sleuths to find out what really went on behind the closed doors.

Devil’s Claw by Valerie Davisson is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery series. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. The character of Logan McKenna is great to read about and there is always something interesting which turns Logan’s world upside down. This book hits some themes which all will understand and relate to: resentment, pain, personal loss, and greed. What these do to some is unmentionable while others come through the flames. The story is interesting and kept me reading to find out what all the twists would lead to. I always enjoy a good story with interesting characters which keeps me reading late into the night. I look forward to where this series goes to in the future.

A DEAD MAN SPEAKS (A CLIVE JANUARY MYSTERY BOOK 1) by LISA JONES GENTRY – Review by Bobbi Wagner

This is a little different book for me but I enjoyed the story nonetheless. This is a well developed story that brings paranormal to a new level for me. The characters bring the story to life especially my favorite Clive who made the story for me. I felt bad for him in parts and felt his determination in others. They made the story fast paced and had me easily turning pages. This is a story about Clive. He had it all until he was killed one night. Now he has a ton of questions about why and who. He communicates with the detective on the case through dreams and visions. He cannot settle until he has his answers, will the detective be able to help him? Will Clive find the peace and forgiveness he desperately needs? I enjoyed the twists and turns the characters bring to the story. I am glad I picked up this book and I think you will too. I highly recommend this book.

Devil’s Claw is the third book in The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson.
Another cosy mystery- with drama, danger, crime, intrigue, and a little adventure. The author had me at sea otters, and the book got extra points for including the sea otters, their rescue, and research.
Logan is drawn into a dangerous situation as a piece of picturesque coastal land causes tension and danger to boil over with various parties laying claim to the same parcel of land. With a murder hitting close to home, Logan will have to get to the heart of the bitterness and greed if there is any possibility of thwarting the killer before they strike again.
Otterly intriguing!

Thank you, Valerie Davisson!

This caper left me glued to my seat. I thoroughly enjoy how Willis weaves her stories together and this latest installment in The Sisters Texas series is another winner. I really enjoy how the characters are tangible, flawed, and downright funny. There is humor even in the dark and twisted. This whodunit isn’t a scare fest but it immediately jumps in and makes you wonder exactly who Rose is and what in the world has happened? If you’ve ever lived in a small town you’ll appreciate how true this rings in situation and dynamic. I have enjoyed each of the books in this series and hope to read more from this author soon. A Rose By Any Other Name is Book #10 in The Sister, Texas Mystery series by Becki Willis. This is another wonderful cosy mystery to add to the already fantastic series- but you don’t have to read the whole series in order to appreciate this book, as it can easily be read as a standalone.
The story is a tightly woven and very intriguing cozy murder mystery, with a wonderful cast of characters, crime, investigation, drama, suspense, and more.
Things heat up when a mysterious newcomer arrives in town, who soon gets tongues wagging, but not in the way you might imagine. But in a “is that a body?” kind of way. Then Maddy makes a disturbing discovery- and the mystery begins.
Really well written, with all the ingredients you expect from a great mystery. I am really enjoying exploring this superb series!

Thank you, Becki Willis!

Why can’t I, just DIE in peace? Why do I roam, unable to rest? Will I ever know the truth, the ugly truth of who shot me in the back? I hear voices, but no answers. Why do they tell me that some racist white cop, who watched his partner kill a defenseless Black kid, is the only one who can help me, the only one who can set me free. Now I hear voices telling me that I must look back to find the truth. I see her standing over me as the life ebbs out of me, and I wonder, did she do it?

“Clive…Oh, Clive, baby…Oh God I’m so…” She leaned over me. The blood from my shirt soaked her skin, turning it a brownish red. As I looked in her eyes, I could feel her tears, touching my face, as her soft hands used to. Then I realized that I couldn’t really feel anything. Because I was dead.

I looked down at me, lying there motionless, and I saw her sobbing over me. Shaking me, trying to will me back to life. But I knew it was too late. I felt this detachment, but at the same time an inexplicable heaviness. Something was pulling me back toward my body, which I didn’t really even feel was mine anymore. Something wasn’t letting me leave. Suddenly, the room was light, brighter than I’ve ever seen it. I couldn’t see her, or me. Just this blinding light. Whispers from eternity called me, telling me that I had to find out. I had to make peace for peace to come to me.

A DEAD MAN SPEAKS is a suspense filled thriller set against the ruthless world of black Wall Street in 1987. It’s the story of Clive January, a Black investment banker, a driven self-made man, who had it all—money, success and power, until he is shot from behind and killed. He can’t rest until he finds out who did it, and his ghost works with Detective Bob, a white cop, who can get in the head of victims and crack the cases that no one else can. That is until now– hated and ostracized by the other cops for ratting on his partner who viciously murdered a Black teen—Detective Bob hasn’t been able to solve a case since then, and this is his last chance to prove he’s still got it. Through dreams and visions, Clive bares his life to Detective Bob until the truth is revealed in a wrenching ending that neither ever suspected. A DEAD MAN SPEAKS is ultimately about the redemptive power of love and forgiveness.

I loved reading the book Devil’s Claw (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 3) by Valerie Davisson. It is a story that once I started, I couldn’t put it down until the final page. It is a book that includes mystery and danger. I have enjoyed reading the first two books in the series and I found this one to be just as amazing. The author does a wonderful job of weaving a tale that had me turning pages wondering what will happen next. This story revolves around the disputed property of Lot 429. Some want the property for selfish reasons. How far with they go to possess it? Read this book to find out. I loved that this story includes a new Sea Otter Center. When reading about the center and the orphaned sea otter that is where my heart just melted. I love the character of Logan. She is intelligent, strong, and independent. She has a fierce determination as well as a true and kind heart. I also enjoyed reading about Amy, Logan’s daughter, and the part that she plays in this story. This book has heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. There are also moments of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. Other additional characters play their part and it is wonderful that some of those from the first two books make their appearance again in this one. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting, mysterious, and entertaining. I would recommend reading it.

This is the book in this series, I enjoyed it just as much if not more than the previous stories. I highly suggest reading all of the books in this series. This is a story that is full of action and suspense. The twists and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. Logan is back in this book with a new murder but this time it’s someone close to her. Lot 429 – is a partial of property that is in high demand. Everyone seems to want it but how far will they go to get it? As the story turns dangerous, a community trying to stop a murderer may just turn more deadly. Logan has been one of my favorite characters from the beginning. She is a strong character and really just makes the story for me. I have no problems connecting with her and the rest of the characters in the story. This is an easy, entertaining story and it made a great afternoon story. I highly recommend this book.

I loved how this book kept the mystery coming with not only a sleuth of questions but with a fast paced adventure following. Suspense is built and mystery unfolds as we continue to read through this book. This is a great read because it picks up momentum but doesn’t let loose. These characters are easy to fall in love with as they thrive in as heroes but this a great addition to the series. Loved it!

This is a new to me author but the moment I saw the cover I knew I had to see what the story was that laid behind it. Rose by Any Other Name is the tenth book in The Sisters, Texas Series, but honestly I was able to read it as a stand alone just fine. I can tell this may be one to go back and see what the previous books are all about though after finishing this one. This is one of those feel good reads with having some mystery and intrigue binding it all together reads that I just couldn’t put down. The mystery busting the girls in this novel is someone has put a dead body in Granny Bert’s fridge, but who did it and why is the real conundrum. The rest is for you to read and see how things play out, but I can assure you this is one the mystery reader won’t wanna miss out on.

Rose by Any Other Name by Becki Willis is the tenth book in The Sisters, Texas Mystery series. This book can be read as a stand-alone.
As the first book I have read by this author it definitely gave me a great introduction to her work. The book was intriguing and entertaining in equal measure. It was really easy to understand, despite me having not read any of the previous books in the series. I thought the whole book was well paced and competently constructed.
The characters worked well together – clearly the result of having been built up over many books. I enjoyed reading about them and can easily see how you would build up a sort of relationship with them if you have been reading from the start.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will certainly look to read the rest of the series.

Let me start by saying, I enjoyed that this book took me back in time to the start of Vietnam and back to present day but I thoroughly enjoyed how it all came to tie together in a smooth way. I love Logan’s inquisitive nature and how she finds herself in these situations to help others. The author makes Logan come off just as human as the women that we are in real life which made me continue reading this second book of this series. I also love a good mystery and suspenseful story as this book was to draw me in as it was written well but the adventure keeps me at a smooth pace as well.

Brash deCordova is the sheriff in The Sisters, fondly called that by the residents of Juliet & Naomi (the towns are on each side of railroad tracks!) who gets multiple calls about a suspected murder…but was there really a murder? How can he be sure with the multiple stories that don’t quite match from the witnesses and no body? You’ve got to love a mystery that starts out like this!! The characters in this book have depth and love and respect for each other. It won’t take long before you get sucked into the story. How have I not found this author before? I have a lot of books to read to get to know more about what happens in The Sisters Texas Mystery Series.

Although this is my first book by this author I definitely will be reading the other books as well. I found myself on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going to happen next. There is two different mysteries, find out what happens next in this must read. I don’t want to give to much away . I highly recommend reading this. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Forest Park: A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 2 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson. From page one I knew I was in for quite the adventure and I love every single minute I got to be lost in this story. It’s got everything I needed for a mystery story. I found myself on the edge of my seat more than once. Trying to balance wanting to read as fast as possible to see what happens next and wanting it to slow down a little because I wanted it to last longer. The characters are complex and relatable, they truly make this story worth every minute you maybe neglecting in the real world. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. I love books that can take me by surprise and this author does just that. Excited to see where the author takes readers next. Five stars all the way and highly recommended!

It’s summer, and with a new job, a new life, and plenty of time for her music, life couldn’t be better for Logan McKenna. She and her daughter, Amy, home from Africa, even rescue an orphaned sea otter pup and help nurse it back to health at Jasper’s new Sea Otter Center.

But powerful storm clouds soon begin to swirl around the center, threatening the lives of all who enter it. More than one person lays claim to the property and all want it badly—but for very different reasons.

The murder of someone close to Logan soon exposes deep layers of resentment, greed, and painful, personal loss. Only love, trust, and community will have any chance of stopping the killer, before more lives, including Logan’s own, are lost.

Fans of J.A. Jance, Elly Griffiths, Louise Penny, C. J. Box, James Patterson, Nevada Barr, Sue Grafton, and Alexander McCall Smith will love fiercely independent and loyal Logan McKenna.

A self-admitted book addict, Valerie was the kid with the flashlight under her pillow, reading long after lights out. After a life of travel, she now lives on the Oregon coast with her husband, John, and their new puppy, Finn. When not working on her latest book, she’s probably in the kitchen, making a mess and cooking up a storm for family and friends.
