Ancient Reflections: A Mythic Trilogy by Tamara Agha-Jaffar – Review by Shelly Kittell

Ancient Reflections: A Mythic TrilogyAncient Reflections: A Mythic Trilogy by Tamara Agha-Jaffar

I found this book to be an interesting take on the myths from the female viewpoint. The author felt that the woman’s POV has been stifled and she is correct on that point. I very much enjoyed reading this fiction novel witch 3 stories based on the myths: Homeric Hymn to Demeter, the Odyssey, and the Epic of Gilgamesh. It was different to read them with a feminine view. I had never quite realized it had ever been the other way. The stories were written in such a way that the classic of the myth was still there but it felt modern enough to keep you reading. I’m glad that the cast of characters was included for each story. I had forgotten most of my mythology. The stories were easy-to-read. It’s a book I would definitely make sure to have my teen read or young adult read when they hit this in school. This other perspective will be nice to just have. It will also be a nice read to sneak in amongst all the boring dry. An enjoyable read that everyone may like.

A Veil of Gods and Kings (Apollo Ascending Book 1) by Nicole Bailey – Review by Christen Ware

Captivating, heart-wrenching, and a smooth read that was finished within a day. This book was a beautiful work of art worthy of the Greek gods themselves, and this dip into the retelling of their lives rivaled the top places. The reader is not only entirely and absolutely immersed within their world, but the way this story is written, it felt like you were walking right beside Apollo and Hyacinth while they continue to steal glances and touches. A beautiful tale laid out in an even more beautiful way, this read was one that held and caused so much emotion within so few pages.

It was an experience to witness the multiple POV style, and truly learn each character’s thoughts and wishes, and it was hard to not fall in love right alongside them. The author’s ability to paint the scenery so it felt like we as readers were too learning to nock and shoot an arrow for the first time, or lay amongst the stars as the lyre was played for us. Watching and being captivated by such an emotional story of betrayal, hope, and duty leads us to root for the forbidden lovers.

This gorgeous retelling of Apollo and Hyacinth truly held up so beautifully. A must-read and I hope to see this being raved about in the future. Patiently but painstakingly waiting for the second book in this installment.

“It’s going to rip my heart into pieces and leave nothing but shreds remaining. And centuries—millennia from now— I will still bleed for you.” – A Veil of Gods and Kings

Apollo, a deity, running through the motions of unfulfilled relationships, and an unwanted destiny bound to him.
Hyacinth, a prince, striving for perfection at every turn, but never thinking of himself and the world outside of his palace.

Apollo is half mortal, half god, or a deity, and is avoiding his fate, unwilling to accept his spot as god of the sun. He drowns himself in pointless and meaningless relationships, keeping a veil over his identity and his heart. Never letting anyone get too close, except his mortal sister, Temi. Temi, perfect at everything in every way, but surrounded by pain and sorrow in her past, like Apollo. All they have is each other, or so they thought…
Apollo had no choice in his life, except one, either ascend and become the sun god, or spend a year mentoring under mister perfect, Hyacinth. Apollo had to decide which was the better of two evils, but he chose the option that would keep his sister by his side. Spend a year with the dreadful Hyacinth.
Prince Hyacinth, mister perfect, in looks, charm, work, being a son, brother, everything. To Apollo he was obnoxious and insistent, or so he thought. Prince Hyacinth thought Apollo had an over-inflated ego, and could not be around him for more than five seconds, but wanted to please the god, Zeus, and keep his city safe. These two together, sparked a dangerous fire that burned hot. They taught each other things they never knew existed, and experienced life together.
While Apollo was falling in deep, Temi had a mind of her own. That was releasing Epiphany of her princess duties, and taught her how to let go and live life. At first a distraction, sparked a friendship that was unbreakable.

In this retelling of Prince Hyacinth and Apollo, lies a story of enemies-to-lovers romance. But Nicole could not stop there, she twisted this retelling into SO MUCH MORE. Finishing the book, as the reader, I am left with wanting more. Even though the beginning started off slow, it was so important to build this world. I have never read a retelling of a Greek mythology story like this. Each character was eloquently built, not just in the world itself, but their back stories, their emotions and their relationships. Each chapter unfolded a new leaf to each character’s story. Besides the slow build, due to building such a breathtaking world, there was not large gut wrenching moments until the last fifty pages, especially the last three chapters of the story. Thankfully, Nicole was able to keep your attention even during the slower moments. The romance was very slow burn, and not graphic, vague in a sense, but still showed the affection of each character. If you are looking for a romance with some description, but not very detailed or in depth, to the point of, “holy smokes that is smut”, this is the book for you!
I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!

I found this book immersed me right from the first few lines on the first page! I loved the way the author created and wrote this story! I found my eyes were opened to visuals as well as different takes on the story through the eyes of the characters! Was very much a must read and I truly enjoyed this book!

The book consisted of 3 tales. I found each one captivating and different in its own special way. The characters faced odds and difficulties as they found as I would like to say, their purpose I was captivated to by how the characters handled things and how each one reached its outcome and its flow of the story. Gods and monsters are often feared, but are we as the humans who should be feared instead? The book made me think and see things differently. The book was amazing and I really enjoyed this collection!

Amazing book and if you love reading mythological readings as I do, then this one is surely to be enjoyed by you! A must read and a high recommendation from me! Wonderful writing by a gifted author!

I enjoyed reading this collection of historical stories. This is my first book by this author in which I look forward to reading more from them. This is a well written collection of three stories that will show you worlds of gods, monsters and just life struggles. They will take you on an adventure. They are engaging stories that have great characters. They are engaging and keep you coming back for more. Each story is unique in its own way and easy to read. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.

Good reimagining of the Apollo mythology. I enjoyed the interpretation of the characters. It’s NA so it has pretty much no steam, but you can still feel their connection. The blurb calls it enemies-to-lovers, but I wouldn’t say they are enemies so much as just a bit angsty. Still made for an entertaining read.

~ What’s a Greek Mythology without Love? ~

Very cool retelling of an ancient story. I love picturing stories in a new way, it helps me imagine more of what could have been. I also love the enemies to lovers not being what you would normally expect.

Overall I think this is a very interesting read. Between romance, struggling with authority, and action packed storytelling this classic is a must read. Not my typical choice, but it’s so fun to pick up something new and be pleasantly surprised.

A Veil of Gods and Kings book 1 by Nicole Bailey is a wonderfully written enemies to lovers’ book about a mortal Prince (Hyacinth or Cyn for short) and a Demigod (Apollo). Apollo has not ascended and took his rightful place of God of the Sun. His Father, Zeus, is not happy and give Apollo an ultimatum, ascend now or go live with Prince Cyn for a year to shadow and learn how to become a ruler.
Of course, Cyn and Apollo didn’t get along at first but then slowly things begin to change, and these enemies start to develop other feelings than anger and frustration. This book is full of emotion, drama and love and you will not be able to put it down. I love all the characters that Nicole wrote into the book. This is a great alternative prospective on the Gods.

A Veil of Gods and Kings tells the story of Apollo and Prince Hyacinth. I enjoyed this fresh spin on this tale from mythology. I do not want to give anything away about the story, but this is an enemy to lover’s story, and well done. The story is gripping and drew me in. I enjoyed the worldbuilding and character development. The story was a quick read and left me wanting more. I look forward to reading more in this series and from this author in the future.

Ok, I’m still bleeding from this book. Ms. Bailey takes you up and down the range of emotions from sadness to joy and everything in between as you watch these two stubborn men defy Fate & everything around them.

Ms. Bailey put her heart into this retelling of the ancient story. I hope she sticks with this genre a few times as I’d like to see her take on a few other mythos. 5/5 stars

This was an easy choice to read for me to read right now. Most definitely an adult version of Greek Mythology, the chemistry between the characters and the story itself made this a quick read for me. It is obvious that mythology is an interest of the authors, her attention to detail on par with Rick Riordan, author of the bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

I loved the twist that she put on the story of Apollo and Zeus, it very much modernized the tales that have been around for centuries. This book was definitely a good intro for me to Apollo’s story, as I am planning to read the series on Apollo by Rick Riordan later this year.

Like I said before, the chemistry between Apollo and Prince Hyacinth makes the book a quick read, but that is the least of it. When the electricity between them is going off, there is a sizzle to the air around you. I’m always a fan of the enemies to lovers trope, but this book is the perfect example as to why everyone should read a story like that.

Needless to say, I am a huge fan of the authors’ writing style, the characters, and the plot line. I was sad the moment that I finished the book, but eagerly await the next one and might read some of her other books in the near future!

This was a new spin on Greek mythology. Apollo has not yet ascended to his god-status, nor does he really want to. Zeus assigns him to seek out Hyacinth to learn how to become more like a ruler. Apollo and Hyacinth don’t trust each other at the onset, but the more they are forced to work together, each sees the potential, as well as the shadows of doubt, in the other and a bond is formed. This was not the usual type of book I read, and while I don’t care for the M/M, it was still a great read

This is the first book in this series and the first i have read from this author. I love how it sucks you in to the mystical world of Greek mythology. There is romance, suspense and fates intwined. Apollo has some huge decisions to make and his Father Zeus only wants and sees one outcome and thats for Apollo to take over as God of the Sun. But Apollo doesn’t want to ascend he is happy being a demi-god can his mind be changed. I cannot wait for the next book.

I devoured this book in less than two days! I enjoyed reading the Greek myth of Apollo and Prince Hyacinth, but reimagined in a new way. I learned about the gods, the family line, and what life is like before they ascend to become a god. I became attached to every character – Apollo, Hyacinth, and Epiphany are trying to avoid the responsibilities they have been born into, Temi is Apollo’s mortal sister who is always by his side, and Valerian who was not claimed by his father so he works as a stable hand. I found Apollo and his powers so interesting to read about, he can veil himself to look like others, he can heal, and more. Zeus, his father, is angry that he will not ascend and sends him to learn under Prince Hyacinth. They are enemies and pretty much hate each other, that is until they start to really get to know one another and learn they have many things in common. Epiphany needs to help her family and marry well, but she doesn’t want to participate in her promotion party and find a husband. She and Temi become very good friends and have some fun adventures. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

I’ve read some Greek mythology retellings, but I’ve never read one about Apollo and Hyacinth, and I really enjoyed this one. It’s more YA in writing style but I also liked the fact that the mythology was modernised and it was more a story of imagination and fantasy rather than a straight retelling of the original myth. It was really the depth of character that pulled me into the story and the romance/tension is off the charts. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book!

A Veil of Gods and Kings is the first book in the Apollo Ascending series by Nicole Bailey. What happens when a god who is a bit of a tortured soul and haunted by his memories, fights his fate, and in doing so takes a stand against his father? Well, we are talking about Apollo, who is supposed to ascend to become the god of the sun- and yep you guessed it, his father being Zeus himself. So, as you can imagine, Apollo’s refusal to accept his fate doesn’t go over too well with daddy dearest, resulting in Zeus making an ultimatum. Now Apollo has been forced into a mentorship under the guidance of the insufferable Prince Hyacinth. Something neither of them relish. Things are going to get complicated- rather quickly. Especially when their chemistry begins to simmer and smoulder. What happens next makes for a very intriguing read.
This is a NA reimagining of the Apollo myth; an enemies to lovers fantasy with a slow-burn MM romance (nothing explicit), plenty of emotion, angst, drama, danger, layers, banter, and intrigue. And can we take a moment to appreciate this gorgeous cover! It sold me even before I knew anything else about the book. Love me a gorgeous cover!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Nicole Bailey!

A Veil of Gods and Kings(Apollo Ascending Book 1) by Nicole Bailey Review By Jessica Stone

A Veil of Gods and Kings is a wonderful reimaging of the Greek myth of Apollo and Hyacinth, an interesting twist on an M/M, Enemies to Lovers, Slow Burn, Greek mythology.
One thing that caught my attention immediately about this book is how skilled the author is at creating such a mind-blowing immersive and vivid world. From the beginning I could picture every little detail from the fruit on the tress to the vivid blue and white hues of the sky
The first book of four in the ‘Apollo Ascending’ series this slow burn, fade to black, NA romance story told from multiple perspectives, did not fail to pull me in and hold me until I had no choice but to keep reading until the end. The main character of the story, Apollo is nothing if not relatable, with his disdain for being told how to live his life to his sassy attitude towards hyacinth, and his undeniable charisma, he was immediately my favorite character. Though this story is also being told from two other perspective, it leaves you equal time to get to know every character and to fall in love with each one, opening the possibility to further explore the other characters story in the future.
I enjoyed the empowerment on not only men being in less than favorable situations with unwanted destinations in life, but it shows the struggle of these strong women just trying to walk their own path in life, no matter what, or with who that might be.
If you’re looking for a new interesting take on Greek mythology, with fade to black type romance, I would highly recommend this book for you. I’m excited to see what this author has in store for us readers and where she’ll take us with her phenomenal characterization!

I absolutely loved this book! When I got to the end and realized that there was a cliffhanger, I was so bummed to have to wait—but then I saw that the next one comes out soon and that made me happy. I love Greek mythology and new versions of the old stories I have heard before. I am fascinated by the world of Olympus and the gods and goddesses that live there. This book tells the story of Apollo before he ascends, and his stay with Prince Hyacinth as demanded by his father Zeus. Apollo is a lovable character despite his flaws and the journey he goes on with Cin is page-turning. I also loved the supporting characters like Pip and Temi. There were some things that I expected to happen since I know the original stories of Apollo, but I definitely loved this retelling. I am very excited for the second book to be released!

I can’t get enough of this book! I am honestly so in love with everything I just read! Even though I was unable to put this book down, I didn’t want it to be over!

A Veil of Gods and Kings follows Apollo and Hyacinth as they are forced to learn how to live together. Due to Apollo’s stubbornness, he has found himself stuck with Hyacinth for the next year of his life. While the thought is grueling, he finds himself being mentored by him. Anything is better than descending right? As the story unfolds, we find ourselves on an emotional journey hoping for a love story that will leave us breathless.

When I saw a mythological retelling I knew I had to read it. I will be completely honest, I don’t know the original of this story. I am drawn to mythology retellings though. This one didn’t fail to disappoint me! This author was able to bring out every emotion while I read through this masterpiece. The story kept my interest the whole way. My only complaint about the book is that it’s over!

I absolutely recommend this book!

Apollo is the son of Zeus, destined to ascend to Mt. Olympus to become a god himself. But he isn’t ready to give up his mortal life just yet. When Zeus gives him an ultimatum to ascend right away or spend a year mentoring with Prince Hyacinth, which he chooses so he can stay on Earth longer.

I enjoyed the writing style of this book and the characters were well developed. The story line did seem a bit narrow and I think there could have been more to the story than the blossoming romance between Apollo and Hyacinth. That being said, I do think this was an entertaining read and would recommend it.

This book was nothing like I expected. I went in blind because I did not want to make judgements, and I ended up loving this book! The author did the Gods and the multitude of drama plenty of justice and more.
Apollo and Prince Hyacinth were interesting together. Powerful men each trying to navigate what was thrown there way as well as adjusting to the mentee and mentor relationship. The way they were able to work together and the transition from enemies to lovers played out well. This story was a fun read, and I would read this author again.

You definitely have to have a general understanding of Greek Mythology and the God’s before you read this novel (otherwise I do not know that I would have understood it as well as I did). I feel like the author did a great job incorporating the characters and really getting into their personality in a relatively short book and I applaud the author for that. The detail was immaculate from the characters to the plot and the world building.

The reason I gave this four stars instead of five was because I struggled to dive into this book like I have with other Greek Mythology books in the past. Otherwise this novel would have definitely been a five star read for me. I also loved that it was a different take on Apollo; before he ascends. I do give the author creativity points for thinking outside of the box with this different point of view. I would recommend this novel to any romance and/or Mythology reader.
