Greek mythology is not typically a genre I enjoy reading, however I loved the way the author put a new take on these three stories. It was not exactly a quick read however it did keep me drawn in and engaged the entire time. I enjoyed the amount of detail put into the beginning of each section so you could truly understand who is character was if you were not familiar with the original Greek mythology. Not necessarily a book I would put on my reread list but very enjoyable.

I greatly enjoyed this retelling of Greek Mythology. This book is beautifully written and gives a feminine perspective of the events of these three stories. It really helps you to understand the possibility of why some of the events took place and what these women would have been thinking. The stories are touching and it is very easy to relate to the ladies in the stories. It was heart-breaking to put yourself in some of their shoes. I highly recommend this book to everyone that may want to consider what it would have been like for the ladies of mythology.

This book was truly fascinating. I am not one who has been overly excited about Greek mythology but these stories were so entertaining and enjoyable. I found The Pomegranate and the Maiden truly enjoyable, especially as a mother. I understood Persephone’s desire to get away from her mother, but I truly empathize with Demeter, as a mother that wants to protect her daughter from the ways of the world, and is unable to do it. The connections made to our life on earth were interesting and played well – including the changing of the seasons and how women are in a subservient position to men – but still fighting back in whatever ways are needed. Truly enjoyable read – highly recommended!

I had a long road trip this weekend and hooking my kindle up to my car stereo system, I knew I was in for the trip of my life, and I wasn’t wrong. Not only did these stories have me wanting to renew my knowledge of the originals, but it had me realizing that I really do have an interest in timeless tales all over the map, and not just my favorite nursery or wives tales. This author really captured the voices of the women, and those that we weren’t overly accustomed to hearing about or from, and allowed the reader, at the very least me, to become immersed in the stories and really get my mind moving in all different directions.

New perspectives are quite important when it comes to all stories, and it brings what used to be common knowledge and interest to the surface again. I do believe that this author has a talent that not many have, what with the ability to bring these mythic tales back and has spent a long time honing what was to come off the pages, and I very much look forward to reading the stories and being able to disappear into the pages rather than hear them read to me. I especially like the way the different characters thoughts are portrayed, making it far easier to relate/connect with everyone’s feelings, and thoughts, whether they were right or wrong. I will most definitely be looking up more by this author soon, certainly worth a read, well done!

I have always loved Greek Mythology and everything within it holds a special place in my heart. This trilogy was one of my favorite reads of this year. Each story was told each within a female voice and POV. A modern tale touched upon with a classic feel. As you read through and the stories come to life it transports you to back to the tales itself, and gives you that hidden glimpse. This was a wonderful read and If you love Greek Mythology then this is for you.

I really enjoyed this Trilogy of stories. The author does an amazing job of taking mythical stories and retelling them in a way that makes them more relatable. Each story is unique it’s it own way but it what I really loved is that the stories are seen and told from a female perspective. This really brings the stories to life as you get to feel every emotion felt. I understood the feelings of Demeter as a mother myself. I felt her need to protect her daughter and her grief at her loss. But at the same time i understood Persephone’s need to grow and make her own way.

These books are mythical story’s full of angst, gods, emotions, adventure and a insight into the relationships from a deeper point of view.
Amazingly written I was captivated with them all and I know have a new love for Greek Mythology.

I really enjoyed this trilogy of stories based on timeless tales from Mythology, but retold with a new perspective. Each story is told from the females point of view, giving a voice to the women who made the stories, such as, “Homeric Hymn to Demeter, the Odyssey, and the Epic of Gilgamesh”, so memorable. By retelling these tales of myth and adventure, both the ancient world and the world of gods, monsters, and the otherworldly, are made relevant to todays readers. I was hooked from start to finish and I felt completely immersed in the stories, due to the wonderful descriptive narrative, the fascinating historical details, and the relatable characters. An enjoyable and engaging read.

A lovely retelling of three well-known installments, but from the feminine point of view. These retellings are a fresh new perspectives on stories that have been twisted and turned many times throughout their lifetime. It is lovely to see the different thoughts from a new perspective that had been caged and stifled for far too long. The majority of retellings require a basic knowledge of what the actual story is beforehand, but with the reads like these, you don’t need to have a decent foundation built to understand it. The character list was greatly helpful in identifying characters and added to the help of refreshing the reader’s mind beforehand.

It would be amazing to see work such as these included in the literature regimen that has their source material mandated to allow readers and students to have numerous perspectives that aren’t just from the masculine point of view.

Overall, a good read and a refresher from most retellings. It was easy to love the characters in these new lights and offer even more insight into already well-known and loved stories. I would read again.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you love Greek myth retellings with fresh perspectives and romance, this novel is for you.

A Veil Of God’s and Kings by Nicole Bailey is the retelling of the rare myth about Apollo and Hyacinth. The reimagining is a fun , modern take on the myth.

Told in 3 perspectives: Apollo, Hyacinth and Epiphany, you get a broad view and range of emotions with great characterization, especially that of Apollo. His character has depth showing his raw emotional side paired with his fun, charismatic and sometime self depreciating side.

This was a great start to the series and I am sure so many will dive right into this immersive world and not want to leave it.

Ancient Reflections: A Mythic Trilogy by Tamara Agha-Jaffar. This trilogy was amazing. Its the stories of ancient myths but told in a woman’s view. Its such a beautifully written story that it will capture you and not let you go until its over. I was up flipping pages late in the night. Its a modern take on old tales. The first story is A Pomegranate and the Maiden the story of Persephone and Demeter. The second is Unsung Odysseys the retelling of the “Odyssey’ whish tells the tale of Odysseus’ adventures on his journey home from Troy. And last but not least is the third story “Gilgamesh of Uruk”- is the retelling of the “Epic of Gilgamesh” an epic tale of the legendary Mesopotamian. They are all so wonderfully told that you can see exactly where these characters are and how beautiful the places are. If you enjoyed the originals of these stories then do yourself a favor and read this modern uptake of them. You won’t be disappointed!

A Veil of Gods and Kings (Apollo Ascending Book 1) by Nicole Bailey – Review by Amanda Haller-Doris
This is the first book in what I hope to be a very long series. The series is a twist on Greek Mythology and the first book focuses on a new interpretation of the relationship between Apollo the Sun God and Hyacinth. It is written from the view point of 3 of the main characters in the story, Apollo, Hyacinth, and Epiphany. At the start of the book, Apollo is still part mortal and has not ascended to become a God. He lives in the mortal realm with his younger half-sister Temi. Apollo would prefer not to ascend and take his place as the sun god, but his father Zeus’s patience is waning. Zeus gives Apollo an ultimatum, ascend now or spend a year with Prince Hyacinth learning how to be a better prince. Since Apollo would rather stay mortal longer, he begrudgingly travels to Hyacinth’s kingdom with Temi. Hyacinth or Cyn, as he is called, would rather not have a spoiled half God underfoot, but if Zeus commands it, he must follow it. The two slowly begin to work together and get to know each other on a more personal level. Gradually the relationship moves from enemies to friends, into something more. While Apollo and Cyn are trying to figure things out together, we are also seeing the view point of Cyn’s younger sister Ephiany who has started spending more time with Temi. Epiphany is soon to be on the marriage market, but she would rather make her own destiny. She and Temi become close friends who encourage each other to step outside their comfort zones and see the world with a different perspective.
The author uses modern language in the book which makes it enjoyable to follow. She writes in a way that it feels like she is seamlessly bringing ancient Greece into the modern world, while still capturing the feel of ancient times. The story definitely kept me engrossed until the last page. Her interpretation of the different Gods and how they interacted flowed well. The characters are all well developed and the storyline was tightly woven. She took a well-known story and created a whole new world for the characters to live in. I can’t wait to read the following books.

I am in love with everything greek mythology. I live and breathe it, and it makes for an amazing story generally. This book was no exception – Apollo, Hyacinth, Temi, all of these were my favorite characters and a spectacular novel coming to life on the page. Throw in a forbidden romance, punishment from the gods, and tense familial affairs and you have yourself a complete package. Seriously, though, this book is well worth the read.

This is a new author to me. I was really excited to see her spin on the Greek Mythology with Apollo. I love her storytelling ability. She captured my interest with the first page and kept me engaged until the last word. Her character building is amazing. I fell in love with Apollo. He is the son of Zeus, and his father expects him to accept his fate and Apollo is thinking something else. Zeus is forcing him into mentorship under Prince Hyacinth.I love the chemistry between Apollo and Prince Hyacinth. The plotline is engaging; it is filled with drama, danger, and emotions. Will Apollo enjoy his mentorship? Will Prince Hyacinth be as helpful to Apollo as Zeus wants him to be? I highly recommend this story. I cannot wait to read more books by Nicole Bailey.

Ancient Reflections is a wonderfully written Trilogy of Historical Mythology that I truly enjoyed reading. I was a bit hesitant at first but once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. I was pulled in and everything around me was tuned out. Mythology intrigues me and this author knocked it out of the park. Although this is a fairly new author to me I’m definitely going to check out what other books she has. This is a collection of three great books that will take you on a adventure and show you worlds of gods, some monsters and everyday life struggles. Each story is just as good as the last. The characters are relatable and fully developed. Get ready to be taken on quite the adventure of Classic Myths with a modern twist. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

Ancient Reflections is a collection of three timeless tales, cleverly retold by Tamara Agha-Jaffar. She has given a fresh perspective to these classic stories, but in doing so she managed to stayed true to their origins and intrinsic qualities.
We explore:
A Pomegranate and the Maiden’- which is the retelling of the “Hymn to Demeter’, the story of Persephone and Demeter.
Unsung Odysseys”- is the retelling of the “Odyssey’ whish tells the tale of Odysseus’ adventures on his journey home from Troy.
Gilgamesh of Uruk”- is the retelling of the “Epic of Gilgamesh” an epic tale of the legendary Mesopotamian.
This collection is full of myth, fantasy, historical details, relationships, adventure, gods, monsters, courage, and survival. The stories are fresh, rich, and intriguing. Definitely worth reading- especially if you enjoyed the originals.
Happy Reading!

I devoured this book in one sitting and I absolutely need the second already! This was the first book I’ve picked up from this author and I can’t wait to get my hands on more.

Apollo is the son of Zeus who is battling with being a half-mortal, half-deity. What could be wrong or difficult about ascending to be a God? With his constant running from real connections by only indulging in fleeting vices, happiness evades him. Once his father gives him the ultimatum and he delays his ascension, he finds himself even more torn as he finds genuine friendships.

I feel like that author did such a great job developing the characters. You could feel the chemistry flowing throughout the entire story. This wonderful book caught me by surprise multiple times and I loved every moment of it. I never felt bored or guessed what would happen at any point which is a pretty big deal for me.

This fresh twist on Greek myth is a must read, you won’t be disappointed!

  • I’m a big fan of greek mythology, so the minute I saw familiar names in the synopsis I knew I needed to read the book. I’m also a strong believer in “Love is Love” so when I saw that this was a m/m love story I was intrigued, since I don’t come across many of these.
I really enjoyed the characters and the roles they played. I loved how the relationship between Apollo & Hyacinth blossomed into something so beautiful after harshly judging each other without knowing each other.
I loved the relationship between the king and his children. You don’t see this kind of relationship between royal parents and their children in many stories. The relationships between the siblings were beautiful as well.
I can’t say enough about this story. I loved everything about it. The author did an amazing job. I am super excited to read book 2.View all my reviews

I love this book!!! I am rereading this book and will be reading book 2 as well. I loved learning more about Apollo and how he can relate to us “humans” throughout the book. I feel like Apollo wanted to do things on his own and yet his father had other plans. He wanted him to take his place on Mt. Olympus but Apollo (like most young adults) want to find their own way to ascend into their right place. I really related to Apollo throughout this book. I can’t wait to read Book 2.

Half-Mortal and Half-God, Apollo has always refused his ascension to Olympus to become the god of the sun, preferring the company of mortals and the mortal realm. Summoned by his Father Zeus he is given a choice, take his position as a god on Olympus immediately, or mentor under Prince Hyacinth for a year before his inevitable ascension. To protect the people and village he cares about from Zeus’s wrath, Apollo agrees and is sent to Hyacinth. Together for a year, their relationship changes from a mutual hatred to one that might just destroy everything they love.
I’m definitely looking for the next book ASAP! Nicole Bailey creates a fabulous ancient world full of vivid and beautiful imagery that pulled me right into Apollo and Hyacinth’s story. Her twist on this Greek myth was fresh, engaging, and romantic with plenty of tension and buildup. I could not put it down! The sibling relationship between Apollo and Temi was so endearing and realistically portrayed I couldn’t help but think about my own brothers and sisters. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a wonderful enemies-to-lovers romance full of captivating characters, Greek Gods, and ancient secrets.

This was my first book by this author, and I loved it. It’s a bit of a slower book, since she’s building her own lore around the original myth, but she does a fantastically eloquent job with it. I love how in the beginning of the book she had put a content warning for those who might struggle with certain types of subject matter. This is the first author I’ve ever seen do that, and I adored that she had the consideration for her readers to put it there. I love books that put new spins on old myths (e.i. Riordan’s series, Circe, Song of Achilles, etc.), and this was so well done. I’m ready for book two!

This book was amazing! I’ve always enjoyed Greek mythology, and have read a lot of books that use it as part of their premise, as well as just reading the myths themselves. I’ve never read a book quite like this one though. I was enthralled. The different characters and their individual perspectives, even as they struggled with similar dilemmas was beautifully written. The growth of the characters as well as their relationship building was wonderfully done. Temi and Pip are these fabulously fierce friends pushing gender norms in a place where that would be looked down upon while Cyn and Apollo were just hiding their true selves like so many of us do. Watching them open up and understand each other was beautiful. Their story is definitely far from over, but oh what a magical beginning!

The author really captured me in her introduction and I couldn’t stop from devouring the book. The way these women, and their stories, were written was eloquent and fantastic. I loved the different strengths each woman had- it was really cool learning about them when the original tales made them secondary characters. Growing up I enjoyed learning mythology- especially Greek- and reading these classics from a woman’s point of view was invigorating! This book looks at Greek mythology from the viewpoint of the females that experienced it first hand. As a teacher, I am very familiar with these myths and I truly think that hearing these stories from a female’s point of view was lovely. I enjoyed how the author kept the feelings that women have now in mind as she wrote. It definitely makes characters that can at times seem very unrelatable as we study Greek mythology much more relatable. I truly enjoyed reading these stories and will be remembering these viewpoints as I teach Greek mythology next time. If you aren’t a teacher but also enjoy mythology you will enjoy these stories as the characters are so relatable.

A fantasy mythical Trilogy of retellings with twists. A book of three engaging historical stories. Each tale is different and Tamara’s spin is interesting and intriguing.

A Pomegranate and the Maiden – is the story of Demeter and Persephone.

Unsung Odysseys – is the story of Odysseus’ return from Troy.

Gilgamesh of Uruk – is the story of Gilgamesh a Mesopotamian hero.

Tamara’s passion for mythology shines through her words and takes you to other worlds, times and places. Each story is unique because of the narrative being from a woman’s POV and Tamara’s fresh interpretation of their trials and tribulations, odds stacked against them and struggles that they faced.

It is a journey of monsters, gods and goddesses, immortality and abduction, survival and courage and sheer will.
