The Arsonist’s Handbook by L.A. Detwiler

4 out of 5

The Arsonist’s Handbook starts you on a slow, meandering path through the tortured world of Jameson until the final twist has you rethinking everything. L.A. Detwiler draws you in and gets you slowly addicted to the story, as Jameson becomes addicted to the flame, only to have your world set on fire by the revelations and secrets.

Jameson is a lonely boy that doesn’t feel his mother’s love because she is always working. He mourns the loss of his father that left years before. Jameson finds a journal in the attic that lets him know that he is seen and brings him a connection to the author of the journal unlike he has ever felt with another living being. Jameson tries to make a real life connection to the author by getting the attention of the author by following the rules set out in the journal.

Pete’s marriage is dying. He doesn’t know why. He used to be so in love with his wife. She is beautiful, talented, intelligent, and an amazing mom. Why doesn’t he love her anymore? Why can’t he just walk away? One night while his wife is on a business trip, Pete, needing to feel like a man again, heads a few towns over to have a one-night stand. Tragedy strikes in a way that tears Pete and his life apart. Now he is out for vengeance. He must put it right. When Pete has found his vengeance, is it everything that he hoped it would be?

The slow walk into Jameson’s world took a moment for me to get into the story and realize that I couldn’t stop reading. When I figured out one of the twists, my jaw dropped and I patiently waited for more. L.A. Detwiler builds a story like a Roman aqueduct, strong and long-lasting, then she blows it up with the twists and surprises. I can’t wait to get my hands on another one of her books. Amazing!

A unique and intriguing insight into the mind of an arsonist by a very talented author. This brilliantly executed thriller had me engaged from page one. The story is very masterfully layered and interwoven but not once was I lost even with multiple POV and storylines. I am also very good at predicting where the storyline is going and not once in this book did I get it right, which was refreshing. Great characterisation and plot twists that will shock you. I highly recommend this book.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Arsonist’s Handbook: A Gripping Psychological Thriller by L.A. Detwiler is just as the title says. It is a dark and twisted story that will continue to haunt you. The writing style is in diary form, so it took a while to settle into it. One man’s journal becomes one man’s bible to the dark and depraved life of being an arsonist. The longing, the wonder, the torment and emotions and emotional state of one boy wanting something from someone who was not in his life but is desperate to know.

Jessica Aiken-Hall’s House in the Woods is a gripping tale takes you on a journey that is full of mystery and intrigue and will have you on the edge of your seat. Jessica’s narrative always invokes emotions, and the tension becomes almost a living breathing entity. I’ve said it before, but I will say it again the intensity she infuses in her words and the suspense of this tale had me completely invested and turning page after page.

I enjoyed reading this book so much. Everything I have read by Jessica Aiken-Hall so far has been a fantastic read. She is such a good author. The main character in this story is Molly. Her much older brother is Marc. When he comes home for a visit, Molly discovers Marc’s high school girlfriend has been missing for 20 years and has a strange resemblance to Molly. So she dives into the mystery of what happened to Lucy Minor and why Molly looks like her. As the reader, I felt like I had a lot of the mystery figured out. Boy was I wrong! The end of the book had such twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. It was such an addictive read, and I loved it!

If you like dark thrillers you will love this book! It was pretty interesting getting a look into the mind of an arsonist. Getting to see what made him the way he was and why he was drawn to fire was intriguing. The two different view points kept the story entertaining. There were a lot of plot twists to keep me hooked. It was fun trying to figure out what would happen next.

Haunting and disturbing tale of a young woman who learns that all is not as it seems. Molly has lived her life in a dysfunctional household with a father who’s a jerk, a mom suffering from dementia and she has a brother who is twice her age. She is stuck trying to keep things together. She sees a missing poster of a young woman, Lucy, who looks so much like her. There is mystery, drama, twists, crime, and so many other things that grab you from the first page that you just can’t put this book down once you start. This book is the type I love. The author grabs your attention with such well-written characters. The book feels like a case ripped from the headlines. The plot was so good with the action that kept flowing. There wasn’t a dull moment. Great book.

This book was absolutely amazing! It has to be one of the top books I have read this year, and I did not want it to end. The amount of action, suspense, mystery and intrigue will keep you reading late into the night and on the edge of your bed. Hunter is a former US Marshal who lost his career due to a situation which was no fault of his own, and now he is trying to navigate the next phase of his life with little sense of purpose. When Paige calls upon him to help her with kidnappers who are after her children not once, but twice now he knows he has to do it. This book will keep you guessing each step of the way each chapter gives us intricate plot twists, torture, kidnapping, gore/violence, and even a love spark of old flames. Wine and popcorn are definitely a need for this page turner.

Kidnappings, revenge, foreign terrorists are just a few of the action packed adventures in this book. From page 1, the author grabs your attention by jumping right into the thick of things. Paige and Jose are just trying to protect their children from being kidnapped, which has happened multiple times recently. Paige has brought in Hunter Divine and his team to protect them. Hunter, Athena, Camryn, and the rest of the team have their hands full trying to figure out who the game master is. Who is really pulling the strings? I have to say that the author did a great job with the characters. I truly loved Olivia. She started out as a spoiled bratty teenager and I watched her throughout the story become a strong, courageous young woman who kicks butt when the time calls for it. She could really defend herself. A book of strength and courage. I was very excited to see it’s a series. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Holy Hot Mess Batman! Just finished this phenomenal story! This author does this to me every time I read one of her books. I just sit and stare because I’m always trying to figure out what I just read and I’m also sad that I finished. There is something about this author’s writing style that ropes me in from word one and literally does not let go, even after I finish. She is a master storyteller and I just can’t get enough!!

This one had me so messed up. Who should she trust? I swear I was still waiting for another ball to drop right up till the last paragraph. I felt like I was in this book with Molly and my reading instincts had me all over the dang place. Towards the end I was actually wiping tears away so I could see the words. I just don’t know what to say..Not going to give anything away except to say You have to read this book, I know I will be reading it again and again in the future. It is so emotionally gripping, suspenseful, scary, sad, happy, confusing, and filled with some of the most talented writing I’ve ever read. I’m still in awe and just know that I won’t be picking up another book for a day or two. I worked too hard during this one and will need to recuperate LOL

I loved this book so so much, and already miss all of the people involved in this story! UGH!!

The Divine Devils in the first in a new series by R. Weir. Hunter Divine, ex US Marshal, is contacted by an old girlfriend when there are several attempted kidnappings of her children. Happily married, Paige and Jose cannot figure out who, or why, someone would want to take their children. Hunter quickly assembles a team to provide around the clock protection for the family. But he is facing a formidable opponent who always seems to be one step ahead.

The Divine Devils is a really good story that is full of action. I really liked the characters and would have rated it higher, however, there were two glaring issues for me. First of all, the dialogue between characters was too stiff, not like people speak in real life. Second, the amount of detail in the story distracts from the flow of the novel. For example, we don’t need to know exactly what was on a sandwich the characters had. The level of mystery to the story was great and kept me guessing for the majority of the novel. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

House in the Woods is an engaging suspenseful story. Jessica Aiken-Hall’s stories get better and better with each book I read. Her plotline keeps the pages flying as I can not wait until to get to the next page. Her characters have multiple, complex, and believable layers of personalities. The main character Molly is coming home for her summer from school. She has been put in charge of looking after her Mom who is newly diagnosed with dementia. She has a bit of a problem where her Mom goes missing which leads to another mystery. What other mysteries will Molly discover? Can she figure out why she feels so connected to the missing woman? The Arsonists Handbook: A Gripping Psychological Thriller by L.A. Detwiler is the first book I’ve read by this author. It was an interesting tale, but I personally struggled with the writing style and the unlikable characters, as there was no one I actually wanted to get to know more. I was hoping for more dialogue but I understand how it was written based on the title of this book. It did have a good plot and storyline, with an ending I didn’t see coming, but it was an overall long read for me only because of the writing style and over detailed manor of the book. I know this will be a good read for many, but for me, it was difficult to hold my interest.

Something about this dark and ominous cover drew me in right away and I just had to know what the story was behind it. I am so glad I one-clicked and dove right in. I was immediately sucked into this dark and twisty crime thriller that took me on a ride that kept me up well into the night as I read further and further to know how this story would come to a conclusion. The best part of this book ending, and the only good part lol, is that it is the first in a new series from R Weir so we are bound to be getting a lot more of this dark crime thriller read and detective story line and I cannot wait! This introduces us to Hunter Divine, a former US Marshall with a whole lot of issues and a dark past that gives him all the reasons for the issues. He has the past revisit him when an ex calls on him for help. This is only the beginning of the drama and suspense. I won’t divulge more details because that would only spoil the fun but take my word for it, you won’t want to miss this one!

Although this was somewhat of a long book and took me some time to complete because life has been crazy and my reading time limited, I absolutely loved every bit of this book!! OMG I felt at times like I was reading a live movie that I was watching and could literally see all of this playing out. I could not get it off my mind when I had to put it down and rushed to pick it back up. The build up of this story was sheer perfection…I normally don’t want backgrounds and such but every word and every page was pulling me in more and more as the story progressed. My mind was going every which way through this book trying to figure out who was behind everything going on. I now know how far off base I stayed throughout LOL I have read enough books that now I suspect everyone and in this case I was on the edge of my seat realizing I was completely unaware of what was happening.

I especially loved the characters in this book. Each one with their own story, each one with their own quirks. I loved how they all came together as one and then the added in support just blew me away. I could go on forever talking about each of these people, each one important and all of them I hope to see again in the coming books. I love where this is going, and I have high hopes for this team growing even closer. I was left with questions of one character in particular and have so many ideas about how that could still play out in the future of this series. I hope there is much more to come on that character.

I am so so so excited for this series, I can not wait for the next (and I want one of those t-shirts lol) and although this is only my 2nd book by this author I will be reading anything and everything I can get my hands on.

I LOVED IT!!!

House in the Woods by Jessica Aiken-Hall is the first book I’ve read by this author. What was I waiting for?! I couldn’t put this book down! What a story!

Molly is home for the summer. While she’s home she has to care for her mother who was diagnosed with dementia. While looking for her mom, Molly finds a missing person flyer and she can’t help but feel a connection to the woman on the flyer who’s been missing for over 20 years. After finding the flyer, of course Molly has to keep digging and the weirdness doesn’t end there. Where does Molly go from here? I don’t want to spoil too much of the book.

This book was so good! I didn’t know what to expect next and was constantly on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this book!

Every time I thought that I knew what was going to happen, there was a twist that went totally in a different direction. This just made me turn the pages faster and faster. He will try to keep them safe, but there is where the problem and the mystery/thriller take off. I highly recommend this story to see what happens in the end.
