Road to the Mansfield (Express Investigations Book 1) by CB Laurence. This is a great mystery suspense read. Its the story of the Express Investigations Detective Agency. 3 people in different times and places end up converging together due to life’s circumstances. Rose Donovan is swept off her feet by a man and ends up leaving with him against the advice of several people. He ends up moving her to California and selling her singing to the Mansfield Hotel. Francie Roubideaux is handed a hard life and ends up at a House of Pleasure but her singing saves her from worse things. She eventually finds her way to the Mansfield Hotel singing. Beau Hartwell is a up and coming attorney that seems to have it all but when he loses everything he finds himself in California with his friend at the Express Investigations Detective Agency and they all three come together during a crazy night. This read will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

Road to the Mansfield is the first gripping book in the Express Investigations series by C.B. Laurence. This intriguing prequel was the perfect way to get me hooked on the series. Telling three stories in one, this wonderful, multi-layered and complex tale introduces the extremely interesting characters, giving us their ‘backstories’, while bringing them together so their paths intersect, and Express Investigations can rise.
The characters are all so interesting and dynamic- they have been cleverly crafted into fully realised individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws. They pulled me into the story/s and had me invested in them and the outcome of their tale/s.
The author has woven a superbly detailed and descriptive historical crime and investigation novel- their attention to detail really brought the whole story to life- weaving a rich tapestry which completely immersed me in the era. With plenty of mysteriousness, dramatic developments, edge of your seat moments, action, adventure, heartache, emotion, tension, intrigue, and more- this book will keep you flipping the pages, reading avidly to discover how everything plays out…
I can’t wait to see where we go from here!

Road to the Mansfield is the first compelling books in the Express Investigations Series. CB says it was inspired by the Reba McEntire video for ‘Because of You’ that was written by Kelly Clarkson. It does have a powerful meaning behind it. I can see why it inspired CB to write this book.
Three different stories three very different people but as the author says, “In one fateful night, their worlds collide in ways no one saw coming…”
The stories are centred around the Express Investigations detective agency and are all told in multiple POV’s. We get a much more rounded picture of the characters their background and how they got there. The author does this well.
This shrewdly crafted tale had me turning the pages. I had to know what was going on. Sleep is overrated. The well written characters are as engaging as the story itself. There are surprising twists and turns to keep you guessing all the way through.
I am not going to reveal anything else because this is one of those stories that you should go in without any preconceived ideas or information and discover it all for yourself.
The story doesn’t end it just sets us up for the next book that it is to be continued. I am most certainly looking forward to seeing how the worlds collide.

This fast paced and suspenseful historical crime novel had plenty of mystery and drama which had me gripped from start to finish. The main characters include a swamp rat turned lady, a hotshot southern attorney, and a small town dreamer, all of which endure life’s ups and downs, to end up at Hollywood’s swanky Mansfield Supper Club. In 1927, Louisiana, seventeen year old Francie Roubideaux from the Louisiana bayou finds herself under the iron rule of Miss Claire in New Orleans. Francis uses her “daddy’s wits and her mama’s grace”, to survive, but fate and fickle fortune have plans for her. Rose Donovan’s dreary small town life in Illinois, during 1937, becomes exciting when a New York City music man whisks her away to Hollywood. However, Rose is soon torn between an addictive passion and another man’s arms, and finds that it’s more than her heart that’s on the line.
Georgia, in 1936, and a rising star on the Atlanta legal circuit, Beau Hartwell is envied by every lawyer in the city, until his past comes back to haunt him. The descriptive narrative brought both the characters and the settings vividly to life, making me feel fully immersed in the story. Although the three stories are complete at the end of this novel, it does have a ‘to be continued’ ending. I look forward to book two in this new series.

Catherine Keely is in Crete at the hotel where her daughter Susie was; one year prior before falling from a balcony to her death. Susie’s death is ruled an accident from too much alcohol. Catherine, a mother who is still coping with the loss of her daughter, is there looking for answers.
And Then She Fell is a stunning suspenseful mystery. Dreena Collins had me reeled in with her writing. After each chapter I wanted to know more about Susie and that fateful night.
Catherine speaks to Susie throughout the book as she meets with Susie’s friends and learns more about her daughter than she thought she knew. Each story gives Catherine a different take on what happened on that balcony. This book had me wanting to know the truth and the ending surprised me!

I enjoyed reading this suspenseful story. This is a new author for me. I enjoyed their writing skills that brought their story to life. This is a well written story where three worlds collide in one fateful night. No one will see what is coming. I enjoyed how the characters were able to pull me into the story. They kept the story engaging and easy to read. A fast paced story that has twists and turns that left me turning pages fast. There is much going on in this story but the author did a great job of transitions to keep the story entertaining. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to seeing more from this author. I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed reading this story. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed their writing style as well as their attention to details that made the story come to life. This is a well written story about challenges, secrets and truths that are just waiting to come out. The characters pulled me into the story from the start. They are engaging, creative and really just made the story for me. They have great growth and took me on an emotional roller coaster ride in parts. I enjoyed what they brought to the story. This is an entertaining and easy story to read. A fast paced story that has twists and turns you don’t want to miss. I highly recommend reading this book.

Man, I was hooked from the beginning. This is an intense mystery/suspense that will have you on the edge-of-your-seat, holding your breathe wanting to know what’s going on. There are some twists and turns, but it all tends to come back together nicely in the plot. The characters are fantastic. I found them all so intricately well-written. The detail of their personalities is wonderful and fits into the story. I thought I had figured out what was going to happen and BAM, plot twist. Fantastic start to a series. I was shocked by the cliffhanger but I will be eagerly awaiting the next book to see where the story continues for Ruby and Rose. This is a new favorite mystery author for me.

When she finds herself at the mercy of Ms. Claire and her house of pleasure in New Orleans, her singing saves her from a worse fate. When tragedy strikes, she gets out of New Orleans and eventually finds herself in California singing at the Mansfield.
Rose Donovan is swept off her feet in her small, hometown in Illinois one day by a handsome stranger. Seeing him as her way out, she leaves with him despite her father and friend’s advice to stay. When they move to California, he sells her singing talent to the owner of the Mansfield. It’s not all that she expected it to be though, and she finds herself in an abusive marriage with no way out.
Beau Hartwell is an up-and-coming lawyer in Georgia with a perfect record, job and wife. When his hometown best friend is framed for murder and he witnesses the demise of his hometown, it leaves him questioning all that he has held dear for the last ten years. After being fired, divorced, and homeless, he makes his way to California to friends that give him help, a job and a purpose again. He becomes a part of their Express Investigation team.
This was a great first book to a series. It gives background on all the characters in such a way that is concise but in depth. I felt like I had all the information on each one to picture them and their struggles. I am looking forward to the next book and finding out how the tragic night transpired and how they all play into it. I think I can see the way that it is going, but there were some surprises with the back stories. Definitely going to be on the lookout for book 2!

First off this is book 3 but a great standalone read. I don’t feel like you miss anything by not reading the other 2 first. This book does have some trigger parts…. I say that not to spoil but to warn it does talk about a suicide and a miscarriage. It also talks about the struggle and then turn around of a covid patient. Plus the struggle families had in the early days/weeks/months of the pandemic when a loved one was in the hospital.
Gary and Debbie end up quarantining together when Debbie’s mom comes down with Covid. They aren’t just co-workers but also friends as well. So this book is taking place early 2020 and mentions several times at how strict the lockdown(s) were at that time and being the first case in that area.
Debbie knows Gary has a past and during their time in quarantine she talks Gary into telling her his story. And what a story it is! His military background and training were working for him when he got mixed in with basically the wrong people. As he is telling his story to Debbie he changes into what I would like to think his old self… the one before getting caught up “chasing the money”.
All while they are working towards being private investigators. He tells Debbie about his past life and why he is now in Australia and under a new name. Seeing how hard Gary worked in his past life and let the bad over take his life I felt bad for him and his journey.
Now I am off to read the other 2 books as I need to know more of Debbie and Garys story! Hopefully there is a 4th because I’d love a follow up to this one!
Scepter of Flint by N.L. Holmes

Many times when a book is picked up for the first time in the middle of a series, it can be difficult to navigate what has been missed out on. This being the third book in the series and not having read the other two previous books, I wasn’t sure if I could follow the story or not. However, the author does a great job of “catching up” the reader making this book able to be a stand alone. I’ll be looking forward to going back and reading the first two books though since finishing this one!
This book is set in Egypt, not a setting you see a lot in today’s literature and features tomb robbing and the plague. Lord Hani is tasked with finding out who’s behind all the robberies while trying to keep everyone safe from the plague. It can be a difficult job when his witnesses keep coming up dead!!

Raw. Emotional. Mind-bending. I could not keep up! As soon as I thought I knew what happened, I was quickly left spinning and guessing again. Catherine will do anything to learn the truth as every grieving mother would. She is strong and fierce but questions herself with every turn until the very end. Every scenario left me guessing. I was truly blown away!

This intriguing story follows Catherine Keely and her emotional journey after losing her 20-something daughter in a tragic accident.
While searching for answers, Catherine revisits the overseas location of the tragic accident, while chatting with some of the locals who recall seeing her daughter during her previous visit. Although she finds a bit of comfort speaking about her daughter with others, her preconceived notion’s about the character of her daughter’s friends/acquaintances creates havoc once she begins to receive conflicting accounts of her daughter’s lifestyle.
The author was extremely creative when describing the heartache a mother experiences after losing her oldest child under questionable circumstances. Some questions are never quite answered but perhaps that adds to the intrigue of the storyline leaving it up to the reader to come up with their own answers.
I loved how the supporting characters added more drama to the already emotional scenario.
If you enjoy drama and mystery, I think you’ll enjoy this book.

This was a wonderful historical mystery, and I was hooked from the first chapter. I’m definitely following this author because I couldn’t get enough of the writing style, the flow of the story, and the intricate details! The author does a magical job of bringing history to your home and paints with such vivid language that I felt transported there. Will we find out what is happening with the tomb robberies or are we left to draw our own conclusions? I am extremely excited to read the rest of this series and see what N.L. Holmes will bring to life next!

Book three in The Lord Hani Mysteries Series is set in ancient Egypt during the Great Jubilee of the Aten. Hani is an Egyptian Diplomat who sets out to uncover the mysterious tomb robberies that are taking place and the sudden deaths of witnesses. Faced with a seemingly corrupt police chief and his henchman does not deter Hani as he seeks to solve the mystery. He soon is faced with also trying to deal with a deadly plague that is descending on the kingdom and puts his life and that of his family at risk.
The author does an incredible job of transporting the reader back in time to ancient Egypt by drawing on her real-life archaeological background. She includes maps, a list of “gods” and a character list in the book as extra little touches to aid the reader in understanding the characters and the history of that time. This book can be read as a standalone or as a part of the series. A must read for anyone interested in historical mysteries.

Gunner is the third book in the Hollins & Haring series by T.J. Beach. This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Beach, so I really didn’t know what to expect going into the story. But the intriguing name had caught my eye, and I really love a great thriller- so I clicked a copy and dove in to see what I would find. I wish I had realised going in that this is the third book in the series, because even though this could be read as a standalone, I feel it would have been an even better experience if I had read the other two books in the series first and had known everything that has happened up to this point. Don’t get me wrong, this was a great read, as is, even not knowing what happened previously… I just can’t help but wonder what happened in the first two books and whether that information would have elevated my reading experience of this instalment…… so I will definitely be going back to explore those books, before continuing on with this series.
This is a cleverly woven thriller with dual threads unravelling at the same time- adding some extra depth, tension, and intrigue to this gripping read.
Playing out at the start of the Covid pandemic, the story takes us from Western Australia to London- for and action-packed read that I imagine would also make a thrilling movie.
These characters are really well-developed- they were expertly crafted into fully realised individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws. I felt for them and what they had/were going through- which made it easy to connect with them and invest in the story.
I am glad that I stumbled on this book- otherwise I might have missed out on discovering a great author and a thrilling series, and now I can’t wait to sink my teeth into more instalments.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The way the author formats the chapters between the mother speaking to her daughter after her passing and flashbacks of her daughter’s accidents keep you guessing. I was definitely engaged in the story until the very end.
Story starts after the daughter, Susie, dies after a tragic accident during her trip to Greece. Her mother Catherine has been trying for the past year after Susie’s death to make sense of these turn of events. Was there something that the investigation missed or could someone be responsible for her horrific fall? As time goes on, Catherine reconnects with those she traveled with, her then-boyfriend and some old friends. She is able to reflect on the best moments of her daughter but she comes to terms with aspects of her daughter unbeknownst to her. The happy glowing face of hers fading in the last year. Her frail thinning figure is quite obvious. A controlling and dominating relationship. What could have happened to Catherine’s daughter who was so full of life and now just left with many questions.

I was excited to see that TJ is a fellow Aussie and grabbed a copy asap.
Gunner is the third book of Hollins & Haring which I did not realise until I was three quarters of the way through. I will definitely be going back to read them but didn’t make a difference overall as it is a standalone.
This mystery thriller is set in beautiful state of Western Australia and London on the cusp of Coronavirus. The characters are interesting, and you will be invested in their stories. It is an emotional tale with a little bit humour, where you want to help in any way you can.
Debbie’s mum is fighting for her life and breaking her heart. She wants her family to be together, but a quarantine means that is impossible.
Hollins decides to tell his story but telling his story is raw and reveals his sorry a*$e to his flaws and all. Exposing himself once again to his past torments him and opens old wounds. But will it help him start to heal?

I was hooked throughout this psychological crime mystery, in which a mother is the only one who thinks her daughter’s death is suspicious. Catherine Keely embarks on an emotional search for the truth, following the death of her daughter Susie. Susie fell to her death from a balcony whilst holidaying with friends, but a year after her world was ripped apart by grief, her mother Catherine still finds her death suspicious. However, she is the only person to think so, but Catherine is determined to find out about the events of that night. As Catherine unearths the facts, she wonders how well she truly knew her daughter. Fearing for her own safety, Catherine has to tread carefully, as she discovers who, if anyone she can trust to tell the truth.
This was a real page turner of a novel, with an intriguing storyline and a unique narrative structure, in that the reader is given ten possible scenarios to explain Susie’s death. Catherine is a great main character who brings the story together, and although dead, Susie is very much a central character as the secrets and lies around her life, and reasons for her death are explored. I was gripped by the narrative and was left guessing as to the outcome of the story, and I was also left wondering who to believe, myself. Due to the plot twists the ending came as a clever surprise, and I was left thinking about this novel long after I had finished it.

This is a pretty intense thriller once Gary starts telling his story. At first, Gary sounds kind of like a schmo but he’s really kind of a nice guy that has some issues. He just needs some pushing that might be a “nag” or two. The story gets pretty intense. I loved the action and drama. Intermixed with the story, we go back to Debbie and her family dealing with Nan having Covid. There are some pretty tense moments. He goes through some tough emotions sharing this with Debbie to help her focus on something else. The writing was strong. The characters are very easy to relate to. The struggles are very real. The descriptions made you feel you were right there in the thick of things. A really good thriller that I highly recommend. I came in at book #3 (this one). I will be going back to catch up on the first two. A new favorite author for me. I love the back and forth between Gary and Debbie.
A Silent Way to Die by N.R. Daws

I can officially say that I am hooked on this series which is saying a lot because up until this series I have never liked historical anything. This historical crime book is packed with action to the hilt. Kember and Hayes are back working together to solve another serial killer. In addition Kember has other cases going on that coincide with the main story.
The story like the previous book takes place at a time when women were not allowed to do a lot of things and were thought to only be of use in the kitchen or barefoot and pregnant per se. I felt that the author did an incredible job of showing what women are capable of and was respectful in his portrayal of that.
The camaraderie between Hays, Kember, and Wright really brings out a strong effect of relationships in this story. I appreciated that Geraldine was brought back and hope in future books more of the other women from book one are brought back so that we can see a growth through all of them and their friendship with Hays.
I felt that the authors writing in this book had grown tremendously from book 1. The writing was much more connected and smoother giving the overall story much more to dive into. I found myself completely connected and enthralled beyond what I was in the first book and found this one hard to put down from the first page to the last page.

Perhaps it’s a reaction to my decades masquerading as a serious reporter or it might be the influence of four years in the English public school that produced such light entertainment luminaries as P.G. And Then She Fell is a Psychological Mystery that you won’t want to put down until you’ve finished. Wow just Wow , this wasn’t what I was expecting at all but so much better. This is a gripping story that had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Catherine’s world has been destroyed by the passing of her daughter and the grief is ripping her apart. She sets out to uncover the truth of really happened to her daughter. Did she fall or was she pushed? Catherine is a independent woman whose determined to uncover the truth but how well did she truly know her daughter? Is she putting herself in danger? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

I’d heard a lot about this book in some of my friend’s circles, and I knew I had to give it a try. What a book. This is one of the most riveting books I’ve read, honestly. It’s a story of clarity, mystery, and a search for truth. I’m not someone who reads a lot of psychological thrillers, but this one was so hard to put down! I loved watching the development of the characters as the story went on. The determination, the suspense, just everything about it is utterly fantastic. This book was a must read for sure, one that could not be put down for any reason! It gripped me, and held me at a stand still, I constantly wanted to know more to reach the truth! Outstanding writing!
Nothing can compare to a mother’s quest for the truth. Especially when she believes that what she has been told is wrong compared to what she thinks.. A mother will do anything for her daughter, even in death, that is certain. As a reader, I was at Catherine’s side trying to seek out the truth referring to Susie. The more answers we got, the more things built up and questions came to light. I was constantly trying to figure out the truth, only to hit a wall each and every time. Catherine wanted the truth, she was a very admirable character. Everything leads up to the shocking end, which I must say I was not prepared for, and it was jaw dropping! The character development was done with excellent writing. Great build up of suspense. And a story that is woven that makes you guess as the pages turn. An amazing read and impossible to put down! Loved it!
Such a good book with such good writing. Very impressed with this author for me! I cannot wait to read more works by them! Highly recommend this must read thriller book and author! Do not pass up!!!

Ancient Egyptian mystery
This is a wonderfully detailed historical mystery that has many twists and turns. The author delivers a story steeped in imagery and archeological detail while staying true to history. Lord Hani and his assistant Maya have their hands full with an outbreak running rampant across the kingdom while tombs are being robbed. They will need to draw on every asset but who can they trust? If you like historical thrillers, this is a worthy read.
