This is the first book of this series. This book hooks you from the beginning. I cannot wait for the next one to come out. This book has amazing word building and paints a very vivid picture on each page. Rovena is a demon hunter with the attitude to go with it. She has a challenge instead of killing a demon she has to keep one alive. Will she be able succeed?

I loved this book. It is a darker spin on Alice in Wonderlond. Evaline wants to be the next great detective (Sherlock Holmes) and practice her magic. Her dad wants her to have nothing to do with and wants her to marry the guy next door who is 10 years older than her, when she has her eyes on an old friend Delbert. When a mysterious person comes and ask for help to get back an artifact, she is intrigued. She dives into an unknown world, where she discovers Dr. Death. Can she find the artifact and save the mirror world before it’s too late? I cannot wait for the next book to find out what happens next.

This was an excellent story! Elle is so relatable, and her reactions to finding out that she’s literally not from this world is intriguing. I adore her headstrong personality and the way she faces the new situations that could have other people completely losing their minds. Locan intrigues me with his Warrior mindset and focus on duty, even as he feels connected to Elle. His protectiveness is so complete, and it makes me want to know him, but also the ones he knows. Traylon makes me laugh with his carefree attitude, even as he focuses on what he knows he needs to do. The characters are so interesting and the world the author built is amazing and I wish I could see it through my own eyes instead of through theirs.

This book has some excellent world building that enhances the story. Although I’m not familiar with the demon hunter sub-genre within the fantasy genre, there was wonderful description to help the reader follow along. The main character, Rovena, has depth and an attitude to match that I found likeable. Once I started reading, I wanted to know more about this world of demons and hunters. The hierarchy became clearer for me and I was able to visualize what the characters looked like. I appreciate how the author took the time to paint a word picture of the story setting. Mermaid and the Water Magnifying Glass is a part of the Mermaid Science Series by Lois Wickstrom. This is the perfect story to get young kids to get interested in science. The book is good for ages 4-8. The story takes the children through the science process. They are on an adventure to make a magnifying glass out of drops of water. This will pique the interest of girls using Trezzie the mermaid. The characters are unique just like other children. I love the fantasy concept to teach the concept of science to young children. I recommend this story and series for young children.

When I started this book it seemed it might be another one of those just taking up space on my bookshelves kind of books. But as the story unfolds and each layer is peeled back you get a rather fascinating gem that made me gasp when it was over because I am dying to know what happens next.
Evaline just wants to be able to study the subjects she wants and to one day be a detective. Unfortunately, that all goes away after tragedy strikes her family. Now, her father, who doesn’t want her to practice her skills or become a detective, insists she learn more ladylike pursuits and marry the neighbor who is far too old to Evaline. Then a stranger approaches her father asking for help only he refuses but Evaline isn’t willing to let go without a fight especially with a bigger mystery on the horizon. Sucked into a different dimension to battle a deadly doctor and secure an artifact can’t be that difficult. However, no one seems forthcoming and everyone has their own agenda. They are all pawns in someone else’s game but just who will come out on top? Can Evaline solve the mystery in the mirror dimension and return to London?
This book is reminiscent of a history romance in how females are expected to behave and portray themselves. Overall it was a slow build up until the action unfolds and then it draws you in until the very last page. If you like quirky female characters solving mysteries and dealing in magic then this is for you. It reminded me of the Netflix movie Enola Holmes and I could picture that character in this novel for sure.

Tale of a Body Thief (Rovena Silvex Book 1) by Kristy Centeno. This book is a sit down and hang on type of read. You will be flipping the pages as fast as you can to find out what happens. Its the story of Rovena Silvex who has the special ability to give life and take it away. She has killed tons of demons and she has it perfected. When she is asked to visit the county morgue to figure out what killed this person she is shocked when the body rises from the dead and begins walking around with her. When she figures out the body walking around with her is not the soul that was in the morgue things take an interesting turn. Now everything Rovena has ever known is different, instead of killing a demon she is trying to protect one.

This book packs a punch. It is a definite knockout. EmVee is one brave young woman with some supernatural talents that is out to find out who killed her father and what happened to her family. Favorites from The Void such as Kyson, Rachel, and…eh…Megan are back to help EmVee get answers along with new friends, Demi and Sax. Secrets abound, along with monsters. This author writes a book that has you holding your breath because the action gets more intense the further into the story you go. We learn so much more about The Vigilant as you get into the story. (Is that the group EmVee’s father was part of?) The characters are insanely complex and yet, young adults just wanting to live life. The plot is smooth with twists that fit right in. It comes together like the perfect waterfall. The antagonist just wants to cause trouble and not be found. They do that so very well. EmVee will not give up I like the message the story gives. It’s okay to ask for help. Girls can do anything they put their mind to. It’s also a body positive story. She’s a fighter but also wants to be seen as feminine. Great story. I love the whole series. This is book #1. You should reada this.

I loved everything about this book. The magic, mystery and sass from Evaline kept me on the edge of my seat. This story takes place in London during a time when women are nothing more than property and magic was frowned upon. There are so many levels to this story and I cannot wait until book 2.

Death & Mirrors is the first book in the All Things Dark & Deadly series. I was intrigued by the cover and synopsis of the story, and I was not disappointed. Evaline Wainwright is a delightful character, and she helped draw me into the story. I liked the nods to Alice in Wonderland and Sherlock Holmes. The mirror world concept was fantastic and helped guide the story’s fantastical elements. The story was a quick read. I am looking forward to reading more from this author and reading more from this series soon.

This a great start to the series and a fantastic paranormal adventure. I really enjoy Rovena’s character. She is a very strong and determined lady with skills even she is not aware of. As a hunter her job is to stop the demons that are leaving the underworld before then can harm innocent people. However she senses there is something she doesn’t know about. Some secret to her past and who is really is that is kept hidden from her.
When Rovena is sent to a morgue to look at a body her job is to find out who killed the person and how. But things don’t go to plan. As she is studying the person they wake up. Face with a dead person who doesn’t seem dead Rovena doesn’t know what to do. As time reveals that it’s not the soul of the deceased person in the body and demons trying to get at the soul that’s taken over the body Rovena has to do the unthinkable. She needs to protect a demon from harm instead of destroying it. So we now start on a journey full of danger and surprises as Rovena learns its a lot harder to protect a demon than it is to destroy it. I really can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

This is my first-time reading SF Benson’s work, and I was instantly curious while reading the synopsis I had several questions that drew my curiosity. Firstly, Evaline’s character being the daughter of occult archeologists and being a necromancer. Learning of the similarities yet differences between London and the mirror world Londinium was also interesting. Doctor Death and the mythical artifacts that could stop them. London, January 1888. It is a time in which magic is common knowledge, but in order to practice freely, outside of your own home you must have a license. Even so not all have magical abilities which leads to many being against or having negative feelings towards those who practice it. Evaline starts out being desperate to reach out to her mother using her necromancer abilities, the sudden loss a year prior, left Evaline with no closure, all she had left was her mother’s journal that she had snuck out of her belongings when her father wasn’t looking. She shares her mother’s love of mysteries and feels the draw to solve even the most bizarre. Reading the journal one night looking for answers she comes across the notes of her parents last expedition in Egypt, when her mother was killed. They were on the hunt for a rare mythical relic, the Firestone, her mother journeyed into a cave believing the relic to be in there. Though she did not find the relic she instead found a mirror, “It wasn’t an ordinary looking glass, my dear. It was a gateway to another world.” Reading of the Firestone and then the strange woman visiting her father the next morning and mentioning the same relic, Evaline feels if her father won’t solve the mystery she will. Admiring Sherlock Holmes, she sets off for the woman when she leaves, often thinking to herself “What would Holmes do?” when she is unsure of the “right” thing to do next. Meanwhile, when Evaline and her beau find themselves suddenly in Londinium, an open world where magic is practice and used frequently in the open by those with it. A world in which magic is the least of worries, creatures of nightmares also exist, such as vampires and werewolves (untamable). Being out after night is highly dangerous and if out death is expected. In the search to find the Firestones location Evaline and her beau stumble across other mysteries including one involving the Madame Governor, the leader of Londinium. Which leaves them no choice but to be out after dark to hopefully get some answers. The story was a slow start for me, learning the characters world, who they were. Though the more I read the more I was drawn to Evaline, personally feeling and agreeing with how she reacts to things. While the mystery became more in depth and sometimes leading to more questions about those around Evaline and her beau, I wanted to read faster to find answers. If you enjoy mystery with an underlying love story, then the world Ms. Benson creates in this book is sure to entertain.

My youngest loved this book. She was able to read it and learn at the same time. She loves science. It was done in a subtle engaging way that kept her wanting to continue reading until the end.
My daughter is 12 and a tad too old for this book; however she loved it. She does have trouble reading sometimes; which is why I encourage her to read all different genres of books. This was a book she was able to read well and she loved the graphics.
Having said this, this book would be more suited to a child up to 8.

Beautiful historical fiction with so much research done that you can clearly tell this author put their entire being into this piece. The story and world-building reach heights that most series hope to accomplish without being too overdone and lengthy. This series, the first installment in itself holds the reader well, the plot twisting and winding as we follow Thorfinn’s adventures without the slightest hint of hesitation. The ability to fully immerse the reader is an admirable quality, one that was done well here, and there was just the perfect blend of historical fiction and fantasy.
A great mix of characters’ ages and depictions along with a fast-paced plot has the reader hoping and wishing for more – one that I was excited to see granted! Overall, a very good read, and without throwing any additional spoilers in this review, a very great series.

Having read this series without any wait between books is a relish in itself, but the attention to detail and dedication to research while adding a twist on history is another thing entirely. We once again follow the adventures of our beloved characters that leave us wanting more. The precision and tone of the entire piece are beautiful, and the craftsmanship that goes into creating it doesn’t go without notice. The touches of fantasy that litter just adds the perfect amount of twist that draws readers of all genres in.
Truly a good installment into the series that touches on more than just one solid character and helps to give multiple facets to the created world. Overall, a good read. I recommend!

Arguably the best yet, Batista does it yet again. An incredibly immersive story that draws in, captivates and leaves the reader wanting that much more. Having read the two before this, they seem to keep getting better and better. This is no loss of detail or rushing through the storyline. It picks up directly from the last book and doesn’t leave anything out. I continuously feel immersed in the story, and it’s hard to put down! Absolutely worth a re-read!
This author was utterly new to me, but after reading this series, it’s awesome to have experienced their work and to be hopeful for more in the future!

Wow! I was not expecting this amazing plot when I picked up this novel. It’s just different in a great fantastical way. It delivers in so many ways – think suspense, shadows, gothic, desperate times, siblings/family ties, and supernatural powers. Leo isn’t the typical main character and I love that. I can’t wait to see what else this author brings us.

I do enjoy a good mystery novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed the paranormal and magical aspect that this one introduced. The beginning of the novel, we learn of Evaline is a necromancer, and the daughter of an important man, one who only wants to keep him and his daughter safe, and ensure that she will be taken care of in the manner she has become used to. Little does he know, she has ore of an interest in making a difference and helping people, than she does staying safe and being a ‘proper’ lady.
This rabbit hole was one that brought great entertainment to this reader, the character development and world building was extremely well done, and there were a few different side story lines to the main plot that brought on laughter, gasps, and applause for how strong a female lead she is. Of course, being the first installment, the end of this leaves many questions, and I for one, am very excited to follow Evaline and Del wherever their narrative may take them. Don’t hesitate to pick this gem up!

This is my third book from this author. I like her concepts, introduce science to little children her books. The illustrations are bright and neat, and it helps both children and adults realize that science exists in the nature and you can do experiments with very simple tools and you do not need a laboratory. Trezzie, the mermaid, collects trash which people leave on the shore. When she meets Maia and Fig this time, she is interested to know more about the rocks which has some unusual markings on them. Maia and Fig ,use a plastic fruit box and help make a magnifying glass for Trezzie. Trezzie uses the glass and together they find out that the rocks are actually fossils. The discussion then leads to what Fossils are.
It is a very interesting book to read for both children and adults. I am enjoying reading the books with my boys. I would recommend it to everyone.

Dealing with a loss of a friend can be hard but what happens when you are magical. Not being trained correctly can lead to consequences. Mother was going to help but she can’t now and father’s denied me that chance. What happens when a spectre comes to light. What happens when two worlds collide. Fergus is described in the mirror but Delbert. Legends, magic and mirrors to another world what more can you want. I can’t wait to read the next instalment of this series.

This is my first book that was written by the author S.F. Benson, and I cannot wait to read more of her writing! The book is definitely a unique and peculiar twist/retelling of Alice in Wonderland, just with witches, magic, and necromancy with hint of Sherlock Holmes! Who would not love fantasy, magic and detective work all in one book?! Death & Mirrors is a fascinating story with paranormal elements, magic, family issues, mysteries that need a detective, and also some romance. Setting takes place in the late 1800s in London, as well as the corresponding mirror world Londinium (which is also known as ancient London roughly 40AD). The main character Evaline is a necromancer and an aspired detective who wishes to apprentice under the great Sherlock Holmes. She is whisked away to help solve a mystery about a creature/person who was given the name Doctor Death as well as the task of finding a myth of a gem called the Firestone, which she will need in order to defeat this monster. I love the litter easter eggs from Alice in Wonderland, for example, Evaline falls through to a mirror world that is very different but also very much alike her world, just like Alice fell down a rabbit hole to Wonderland. I thoroughly enjoyed Evaline’s character dynamics as she is headstrong, outspoken and very curious. The book does end on a cliffhanger, so I cannot wait until book two is released!

This is the first book I’ve read of Kristy’s and I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. I don’t typically read this genre but I’m so glad I gave it a shot. Don’t get me wrong, I love paranormal and supernatural plots. Just never read a book that was like THIS. This book seriously has all the emotions and that’s what I love! I love when a book grabs my attention from the very first page, and that’s exactly what this book did!! I need the second book, ASAP lol. Waiting for books in a series is such torture but I’ll know the next book will be just as awesome. Highly recommend this!! Go check it out!! You’ll be missing out if you don’t!

I really enjoyed this book so much. The character development was amazing, how the author developed Leo into the boy he is was phenomenal. This book held a very interesting and entertaining story and is very well written. This book kept me wanting to read more and not stop. I was hooked from the first chapter and couldn’t wait to see how the story played out for these characters. This book held danger, drama, power, fight with demons, being haunted, twists and turns, and so much more, it was very enjoyable. I very much enjoyed it, for sure one to pick up and rad if you enjoy YA fantasy stories. This well worth the read.

These books are so cute science and fantasy and children’s level understanding combine in a way that enraptured my 4 year old. Will be on the look out for more!

This is a really enjoyable children’s book. I recommend this author and this series to any parent or grandparent who have children in their lives that enjoy science. This series is one that any child who loves to explore and discover new things will enjoy. The activities included at the end of the book will make any child happy as it shows them something fun that they can do for themselves.

Maia and Fig are back at the lakeside and this time they are building a tower out of stones when Trezzie the Mermaid comes up to see them with a rock, this rock is too small for the tower that they are building, but when they look closer they can see a pattern in it, so Fig asks Maia what it is, but she can’t tell because it is too small to really see it. When Maia asks for a magnifying glass Fig knows how to make one, so between the tree of them, can Fig, Maia and Trezzie find what they need to make a magnifying glass and what will they find when they do?
This is a charming story which talks about science in a way which is easy and engaging for children, where they can learn useful scientific facts while still being in a land of fantasy.

To say I am excited for the next book is a complete understatement! The story line of this book was exhilarating and, as a huge Disney fanatic, was a successful, unique, and intriguing retelling of Alice in Wonderland. It had magic, fantasy, quest, anything you can imagine relating to those words – this book hit all those marks. The mystery factor of this book was A+. As I said at the beginning, I cannot wait to read the 2nd book in this series!

EmVee is going through some changes and she’s not sure she completely understands it all. Then she seems Kayson, someone from her past, who doesn’t quite belong in this present day picture but she’s going to have to learn to deal with him. So much has changed since her dad made a decision to move the family to “Rhode Island” and there are more and more questions with each passing day. Friendships become strained, new ones are formed, and an alliance that is bonding takes place too!
I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed the adventure! There is a lot of action in this read and I look forward to more of this story. There are several story lines that I’m hoping will be covered in this series. I will say, this book took some twists that I wasn’t quite expecting but they all turned out well!

I liked the book. I enjoyed the stubbornness and determination that EmVee showed to protect her family. It was neat to read about a character that was interested in boxing like I am. This book and a good balance of mystery and suspense. I’m looking forward to reading what happens in the next book.
