Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 1) by N.L. Holmes, is a book that I almost feel like I need to dig my Thesaurus out to review it. I can’t think of enough glowing adjectives to describe my pure pleasure while reading this book. Maybe it was my love of ancient history, or maybe it’s my love of language and a phrase well turned. I do love a good mystery and I can’t tell you how pleased I was that not only is this a confusing, twisting, hard to guess little mystery but the setting of Ancient Egypt was the icing on the cake. The lovely way that Ms. Holmes puts words together made me see the dust and feel the sun. Not only can she make you see the sands of Egypt but the characters she creates are so well described they take up residence in your head. This was a great introduction; I am so glad it is Book 1 because I will certainly board the train for Book 2.

This history buff has been looking for this book and didn’t even know it. Holmes does a beautiful job weaving an intricate tale of suspense, family, and sets it against the beautiful backdrop of ancient Egypt. The characters are wonderfully developed and I really appreciated the depth of relationships explored, familial versus social. Wonderfully vivid book that captured my imagination and heart. I cannot wait to read more!

Bird in a Snare by N.L. Holmes a four-star read that will hook you. This is number one in the Lord Hani Mysteries series and will ensure you want more and more. I am not a big fan of historical stories but love a good cosy mystery and this one just surprised me. It was detailed and encompassing, I felt like I was reading the story and enjoying it rather than being taught history as I read the story. There is a lot going on in this story and a lot to keep track of, but if you can keep it all together you will enjoy this story, that’s the only reason I gave it four-stars as I did get a little lost at times. Overall if you like a good mystery that will keep you hooked the pick this one up.

Bird In A Snare (Lord Hani Mystery #1) by N.L. Holmes

This is the first book I’ve read by Mrs. Holmes and what a read it was. This was a phenomenal read and I can’t wait for the next installment of the series. The characters are so real and it’s hard to put down.

Amen-hotep aka Hani is a diplomat and travels. He travels to find a friend who has been murdered. Things aren’t going well at home and things aren’t going well in the investigation. The quote I choose for Hani is: “Nub-nefer, my love, you must have trust. Trust in our good king, who is devoted to the Hidden One, his father. Look at how he’s built temples to his honor and remade the Southern Ipet temple completely. I can only repeat: he would never permit his son to do anything impious. You must believe that.”

Amen-mose aka Maya, Hani’s scribe, is taken along the journey with his employer. Maya wouldn’t be where he is if not for Hani and feels he owes him. He goes without complaint and finds that there’s something amiss. The quote I choose for Maya is: “Osir protect us! What an abomination! What sort of pervert would stoop to such a thing, Lord Hani?”

This is the first book of the genre that I’ve read and I can’t wait for more. Holmes knows how to catch a reader’s attention and keep it. It was hard to put this book down.

I love the ups, downs, twists and turns this book brings the reader on through Hani’s eyes as an Egyptian diplomat. Prepare to have your boots knocked off with the mystery and intrigue of this suspenseful read. This book involves the best that mysteries have to offer including everything you can imagine. No matter how high this unfolds for him, he’s prepared to take down whoever or whatever is in his way. My heart raced reading every line of this book and where it would take Hani to solve the mysteries that were laid out before him.
This book has everything you could want in one of its caliber: Twists, turns, tragedies, great descriptions of Egypt including Syria, easy to read, fun to read, entertaining, and full of action. Excellent read!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is an amazing adventure set in Anciet Egyptian times. The author has described the places and people in such detail that you can imagine them as of they actually existed.

It is a great murder mystery. When a high profiled bandit is assassinated, Hani is sent to find out who is responsible.
With their kings declining health and rumours of his son’s reign not being as peaceful a time as they are currently living in could this murder be related to the future Kings plans or did the victim cause trouble with another member of another area of the land?

Its a great read which keeps you turning the pages. The story takes a little while to get into due to the characters and how they relate to each other but once you get that it grips you until the end.

Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 1) by N.L. Holmes is a historical cosy mystery set in ancient Egyptian times where NL takes us on a journey where there is a dark, deadly and sinister plot. She paints a vivid world and her writing invites you into the storyline. Having said that the story did start out a little slow and I also found myself wandering and skipping things to move it along at times and having to go back and reread somethings. NL’s passion for the subject matter is clear within her writing and this is not just a story it is also a lesson on 13th century Egypt.

Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries)Bird in a Snare by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bird in a Snare by N.L. Holmes is the first book in The Lord Hani Mysteries series. During the days of Amenhotep III and IV in Egypt, Lord Hani is out to solve a crime. The crime seems simple, but Lord Hani has to go around new reforms, intrigue, and mystery. Will he find the murderer and solve the crime? This is a really interesting story set in a complex period of Egyptian history. There is a lot of attention to detail and the detail helped me dive into the story. I enjoy historical fiction and a good mystery and this combines both. Lord Hani is a great character and I look forward to more mysteries with him. He has many hats and roles to play and always pulls it off. He could go head to head with some of literatures other great detectives. I look forward to reading more in this series and from this author in the future.

Bird in a Snare by N.L. Holmes is the first book in the Lord Hani Mystery series. This is a well written and detailed book that takes you on a journey with the character.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I was impressed by how detailed and vivid this story was. It really felt like I was there with the character, experiencing everything he did. I can picture it all so clearly and for me that definitely enhanced the reading experience.
I loved the authors writing style as well. It really lent to weaving the mystery and building up the story line. Hani was an interesting character, his relationship with his family and with Maya were fascinating to read about.
I very kind enjoyed this story and will certainly be looking into more work by this author.

I did not know what to expect with the title of Bird in a Snare but let me tell you this, I was not disappointed. Ancient Egypt is such a fascinating time and when N. L. Homes incorporated into his story it was an amazing story. The story paints a beautiful picture of Ancient Egypt and I gained more knowledge of a beautiful setting. The plot of the story is a fast-paced thriller. It is the story where you cannot trust anyone. Hani is called in to investigate the murder of the Syrian bandit. During his investigation, he learns that he cannot trust anyone (not even the person who sent him to investigate it). There are twists and turns, ups and downs, and surprises around every corner. Will Hani be able to figure out what is going on? Or more importantly whom he can trust and who not to trust?

This is my first book by this author. This is a murder-mystery story that I enjoyed to the end. It is a well written story that has characters that make the story easy to read. This is an interesting story that you never know who can be trusted. Hani is sent to investigate a murder but what he finds is so much more. As things get complicated for him will the superiors accuse the wrong person? This story did start a little slow but after a couple of chapters things picked up and it became fast paced. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next and if the murderer gets caught.

I loved reading the book Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 1) by N.L. Holmes. It is a story that pulled me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the final page. It is a book that has mystery, murder, danger, and intrigue. The story is written in such a way that the storyline and the characters come alive with each chapter that you read. I loved reading about the main character of Hani, who is an Egyptian diplomat. Hani is a man that is trusted by many. He loves his family and also has a love of birds. I couldn’t help but root for Hani to have success in all that he does. Duties that include the investigation of a murder. This story had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. There are twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I also enjoyed that the story is told with such detail and I felt like I was right there with the characters. Don’t miss out on this exciting and entertaining story. I highly recommend reading it.

By: Sherry A. Burton
My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shameless (The Orphan Train Saga Book 2) by Sherry A. Burton was just as good as the first book and kept me reading.

The second book in this fresh original series once again takes us back to a time long gone, and on an adventure that is both heart breaking, nerve wrecking and touching. I fell right into the easy writing style and the details of the era that this book takes place in. You can tell care and research went into making this book not only engaging and picturesque but, it makes this book a portal that hooked you, puling you in, making you almost apart of this story.

Overall this book is worth your time and energy. As this is part of a series, I highly suggest reading the first book, as you will miss backstory, and important details that will make this book confusing otherwise. So please take my super high recommendation and my golden stamp of approval, that you will not be able to put this series, nor this book down.

Happy Reading

Shameless is the second book in Sherry A. Burton’s series called The Orphan Train Saga. The writer has promised us 18 stories and if we can go by the first 2, we will have one heck of a ride! If you do not know much about the infamous Orphan Trains and placements of orphans, you will have an opportunity to learn about a chapter in America’s history!
The writer gives us an emotional story that leaves no eye dry – I had to put the book down so many times, I was afraid to continue reading as I knew what would happen next, what was the ultimate outcome but again and again, I picked it up to continue the journey that was the life of Tobias who we met in the first book – from the moments we met him when he was four and his sister teaching him to steal to the last breath he took …I still get tears in my eyes when writing this review …
The writer has masterfully mixed history with drama and fact and fiction and even when you know that these characters are not “real”, they are real and you are forced to feel and ponder our humanity and what price might one asked to pay …

Shameless was a good 4 star read and book two in The Orphan Train Saga series. This is an emotional read that will pull you right in. We continue with the story of the Orphan Train with Tobias’s story.

We start with Cindy and her mother finding all the journals and the keys for the boxes. As she and her mother start to read the journals, their relationship starts to change.

We meet Tobias in the first book and we get his story in this one. He has quickly learned how to survive on the streets and ends up joining a gang. When he sees Mileta he is quickly drawn to her and has the need to protect her.

Overall this is a good read and I really enjoyed this story.
This series has introduced me to the Orphan Train and I have done some research to learn more. It was such a sad thing and how these children were treated. I highly suggest you read book one in the series before this one, it will help you connect better with the characters and story. I look forward to reading more from this author and series.

I give Shameless (The Orphan Train Saga Book 2) by Sherry A. Burton, 5 stars.
*This review may contain spoilers from book 1.*

The story of the Orphan Train continues, this time we experience the story of Tobias, aka Mouse. At a very young age, he is left to fend for himself in the streets of early 1900s New York. He quickly learns the best ways for him to survive, and uses his wits and clever tongue to get what he needs. He learns never to trust anyone, and that having a heart will just mean it will be broken. Then he catches a glimpse of Mileta before she even knows he exists. He swears to do everything he can to protect her while at the same time staying alive and thriving in his gang. In the present day, Cindy’s relationship with her mother seems to be changing as they read these journals. They are affected in ways they never thought possible by something happening so long ago.

If you have read book 1, which I highly recommend since you will understand more, we have met Mouse, but we didn’t know his backstory or his side of things. This book tells you all of that, whether you want to know or not. I admit, in the first book I was more interested in the past story than the one of Cindy. This book blends the two together nicely as you learn more and I was as anxious to read about the present day as well as the past. You are pulled into both stories and the author rips your feelings right out from you with her superb storytelling.

If you like stories that take you into the past as well as present day, this book and series is for you.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shameless (The Orphan Train Saga Book 2) by Sherry A. Burton is a continuation of the first book but is the telling of another of the characters. This tale is just as sad and made worse by the fact that there is truth behind the fiction. The history behind the Orphan Train is sad as it is fascinating. Whilst the characters are not real the children and their lives is very much so. Sherry has done a great job of incorporating it into a story that needed to be told.

Tobias, is only 5 years old when he was thrust into a strange and desolate lifestyle and had to endure hardships that only one can guess at. It is a story of his life and what made him, him. It is a story of abuse and suffering, neglect and sadness, fear and famish.

Just to warn you emotions run high when reading this story but it is not one that should be missed. Even in the darkness of life there can be some good.

Shameless by Sherry Burton was a great extension of the first Orphan Train Saga. I would give this book a five out of five stars. I truly enjoy this series, there is something wonderful about Cindy and Linda reliving all of these stories. I did not know if I would be ready for Tobias’s story when the book started but I found myself hanging onto every word. I had a lot of the same thoughts that Cindy and Linda had as I was reading. The story flows really well and is easy to follow, the hard part is just dealing with the situations. I cannot wait to read the rest of the stories.

Shameless (The Orphan Train Saga Book 2) by Sherry A. Burton. I love these books! Each one leaves me wanting to read more. This is the second book in the series and these should be read in order. Its the continuing story of Cindy & her mom finding out that their grandmother/mother was an orphan on the infamous Orphan Trains. The Orphan Trains were used to take orphans and unwanted children West to people that wanted children. They have found tons of journals in the grandmother’s attic. This is Tobias aka Mouse’s story. We first met Tobias in the first book and he was not a person I wanted to read more about but this book explains why he’s so hard. He was a young orphan living on the streets of NYC learning to lie, cheat and steal to survive. He finds himself on the Train West but once he gets there it doesn’t work out and he’s sent back to NYC. He does really well this time around and becomes smarter in the ways of the streets until he sees MIleta aka Mildred. He’s obsessed with her and somehow ends up on another Train headed West and ends up in a very crime ridden gang called the Purple Gang Society. I loved reading about Tobias and actually liked his story even more than Mileta’s! I can’t wait for the next heartbreaking story. These are some of the best books I’ve read this year!

Shameless is the second book in The Orphan Train Saga by Sherry A. Burton. This book is a continuation of the story we began back in “Discovery” (Book #1). This story follows Tobias, who we ‘met’ in the previous book. He is only young but has endured more hardship than anyone deserves to- suffering abuse and neglect due to the family’s impoverished existence- and soon found himself on the streets. But this is not where his story ends. We discover his connection/s to the Orphan Train and what becomes of him, and what he has to do to survive.
Another emotive story woven around this intriguing piece of history. As with the first book, this is a mixture of history, drama, fact, and fiction. While all the characters and situations in the story are fictional, the ‘Orphan Trains’ and the situations that brought them about, are quite factual.
An emotive journey of discovery!

Thank you, Sherry A. Burton!

From time to time there is a book that makes me have to gather my thoughts and feelings before I can even venture to write a review that explains the depth of what I have spent so many hours reading and imagining. Sherry Burton has done it again with the second book in her Orphan Train Saga, Shameless. If you are like me you never heard of the Orphan trains in school and how they were used to take homeless or unwanted children from the cities out west to families that wanted children.
I strongly recommend reading this series in order as this is Tobias’s (aka Mouse) story and answers questions from the first book, Discovery. I can honestly say that after reading Mileta’s story in the first book I wasn’t really looking forward to Tobias, but I am glad now that I picked it up, and probably should mention that I liked this book more than the first!! It shows the reader the reasons behind Mouse’s actions from the scared six year old to the adult Mouse just trying to protect what was his. This is a hard book to read at points, because, come on, who could see a child suffering and not want to help? There were many times my eyes teared up and just as many times I cheered for Mouse.
If you are looking for a different storyline I recommend the Orphan Train Saga. The only problem is waiting for the next installment, which is Anastasia’s story, can’t wait for that one!

Shameless (The Orphan Train Saga Book 2) by Sherry A. Burton is a five star novel. Please read the first book in the series, Discovery, before picking up this one. This series is an awesome way to pick up on the history of our country in this time period. Many people have yet to discover the time of the Orphan Trains, and had no idea that this occurred in our more recent American history. As we travel through the life of Tobias, we really learn what life can be like for a young boy trying to find his way in the world by himself. I also loved getting to know more about Cindy and her mom and their relationship. Their relationship has grown so much because of Cindy finding her grandmother’s journals and actually taking the time to read them.

Discovery by Sherry A. Burton is the first book in The Orphan Train Saga. This is my first book by this author and the story really peaked my interest. Her writing style was flowing and moving. The characters were fully developed and believable. The story was based on the Orphan Trains which I was not familiar with I will be looking into those stories now that I have read this book. The story is about Cindy and her Grandmother who passed away. It is the summer and Cindy being a school teacher has decided to go through her storage unit filled with her Grandmother’s things. Once CIndy starts looking at her Grandmother’s life, she sees a new whole side to her Grandmother. This story has taken me on a roller coaster ride. It is a touching story to see how a Granddaughter learns about her Grandmother’s life and how it affects her.

Thank you Ms. Burton for telling this story.
