The Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford – Review by Amy Brennan

The Second Alpha HeirThe Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Such a sweet nerd turned alpha story! The whole time I was reading this novel, all I could do was root for Nolen, especially when the weight of the world seemingly rested on his shoulders. I have always been a sucker for the underdog, and really enjoyed getting to know Nolen, and Amora, along with Sawyer, Beta Adam, and the rest of their packs. The author does well to bring us into their world, and get to know the characters, although, I did feel a couple of things were overdone in the description department, or repetitiveness of information, which took away from the story.

There was lots of action, romantic suspense, and suspense in general that allowed for the reader to get immersed in the pages, especially if novels of a paranormal variety are your cup of tea. I do love the connection that is built between Nolen and his deceased brother, Archer. It’s a very neat concept and one that ties nicely into the story! I do look forward to reading more by this author, and think it’s well worth a read if you’re in the mood for some werewolf action!

Between Darkness & Light (War of Destiny #3)Between Darkness & Light by Theresa Van Spankeren
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this paranormal story. This is the third book in this series which I highly suggest reading the previous books to help your enjoyment of this series. Julia is back in another fantasy, adventure full story. I enjoy her character and what she brings to the story. She is connectable, strong and supportive which makes it easy to read the story. She is now faced with repairing relationships and having to ask for help. This is where Matthew enters the story. They both are determined to find out why destiny is being altered and who is behind it. I enjoyed their chemistry which added to the story. This is an entertaining story that is hard to put down. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book.

Romance Under AquariusRomance Under Aquarius by Danielle Jacks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an interesting book and it didn’t take long to read. This book follows four people, three of which reside in or near Atlantis and a human. Maris is the princess and is betrothed to another royal named Ryn. Ryn is looking forward to being the next king, but he is in love with Pasha who is the best friend to Maris. A sticky situation that gets even stickier when Maris saves a human named Kasper. Kasper in on a quest go find the jug of Aquarius which he hopes will rid his brother of cancer. How far will Kasper go to find this mythical item? Will Maris return to fulfill her duties and marry the cheating Ryn? Will Pasha get the courage to walk away from Ryn? The author gave us a different perspective from each character which I normally find messy in a book. The different perspectives worked well and were seamless in transition. The story kept a good flow without feeling like there were pieces missing. I saw that this is a series of 12 books and I am interested to see what the next book will be about.

Between Darkness & Light is the third book in the War of Destiny series by Theresa Van Spankeren. Julia has been through so much- and things aren’t about to settle down any time soon. Events have left her shunned and lonely. Is she losing her mind as others fear. Julia begins to wonder herself. She is forced to seek help from a former close colleague, who’s turned hostile towards her. With danger closing in and sinister agendas at play, the stakes are high, as the story takes a dramatic turn….
This is a fantastic series; each book builds on what came before, and I am well and truly hooked. A clever and intriguing paranormal saga, with vampires, action, adventure, wonderful atmospheric world building, danger, politics, agendas, unexpected developments, emotion, high stakes, and plenty of tension.
If you love an original take on vampire lore, paranormal elements, high stakes, and agendas- then you will want to dive into this book/series asap.
Can’t wait to see what Book #4 has in store for us!
Happy reading!

Thank you, Theresa Van Spankeren!

The Second Alpha HeirThe Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Second Alpha Heir is CL’s first self-published book and a great tale. It is a shifter paranormal fantasy romance story and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. The world building, the plot and the characterisation that CL has created is a little different than the norm and it makes for a refreshing read. I found myself fully immersed in this new world because of her storytelling. With action and magic, fear and danger, hope and longing the story will keep you on your toes.

Nolen wasn’t meant to be more than he was but circumstances see to it that he must now take on more than he imagined at his young age. Now he must find the courage and a new found faith in himself to pull this off. With his new friendships his must fight for what is his.

I look forward to see what CL brings us next.

This is the 2nd book in the War of Destiny series. Set up years later, Julia and Samuel have their hands full with the threat from Vampire King. The writing is spot on and draws you in from the start. The characters are well developed as is the world building. Unique twists and turns gad me turning the pages well into the night. Highly recommend.

Romance under Aquarius: Stargazing Series #1 by Danielle Jacks is one of a kind. It is a fun twist on paranormal romance. What if mermaids were real? What about Atlantis? With multiple character views, every twist reveals something new. I was hooked from the first chapter. Maris, Kasper, Ryn and Pasha are all such relatable characters you almost forget this takes place in the middle of the ocean. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.!

Distant Heart Sounds: A Nurse Morgan Series: Book 1, by Kate MacInnis, is the first book in the series that will keep you wondering what will happen next. A little bit of romance mixed with ghosts and a tad bit of mystery will keep the pages turning. I enjoyed guessing which paranormal element the main character, Morgan would experience first hand and what ghost she would meet next. This is the first time in a long time that genre fiction has been able to hold my attention past the first 5 chapters. I definitely recommend reading this book!

Pursuit into Darkness (War of Destiny, #2)Pursuit into Darkness by Theresa Van Spankeren
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I started reading this book with high expectations since I absolutely loved the first one of the series. Let me just say that the author did not disappoint!

You once again follow Julia except this time it is 70 years later than in the first book. The Ka-tet is as strong as it should be with their powers ever growing when Valentino decides to show up and take them all down. Samuel and Julia fear they have not had enough time to get strong enough to defeat Valentino so they decide to flee. That did not work so now the Ka-tet has to fight a very strong Valentino with little faith.

I honestly love this author’s writing. It is so dark and unpredictable. The book has a lot of action as well as twists and turns to keep you intrigued from start to finish. There is some romance and some heartbreak. What’s not to love? I highly recommend this series. Do read the first one before attempting this one though as it will be hard to follow without knowing the backstory.

She has 3 friends and a dog, he’s an English bull dog at that. She prefers tea over coffee and lives like a bachelor when it comes to keeping her fridge stocked and knowing how to really cook. She meets Caleb as well the new doc on the “block. The story is based in Michigan and is funny, cute, thrilling and sweet all in one. It kept me engaged for sure!

Pursuit Into Darkness is the second instalment in the War of Destiny series by Theresa Van Spankeren. It is an original story- a vampire saga with wonderful atmospheric world building, the paranormal, danger, politics, agendas, dramatic developments, intrigue, interesting characters, layers, and emotion.
This is set seventy years after the event of Book One, so I recommend reading the first book before diving into this instalment. Julia’s life has remained fairly undisturbed during this time while her abilities continued to strengthen. But fate has more in store for her now as new danger threatens. Fleeing is no longer an option- with no choice but to stand and fight Julia will need to confront more than just the powerful enemy. What ensues makes for some intense reading.
If you love an original take on a vampire story, paranormal elements, emotion, and intrigue- then this is definitely the book/series for you.
Bring on Book #3!
Happy reading!

Entertaining introduction
This was a fun read with paranormal and a touch of romance. An original spin on the paranormal aspect I was entertained from start into finish. The Cave of Ruin ArsaThe Cave of Ruin Arsa by Andrea Matthews
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Cave of Ruin Arsa is the third book in the Cross of Ciaran series. This time travel series is best enjoyed in order, starting with The Cross of Ciaran, to get to know the characters and contextualise the story.
The historical setting in this book is great, and I like the use of archaeology in the modern-day setting to connect with the past. It’s also fun seeing the ancient characters navigating a modern world – this is a trope I always enjoy!
The Cave of Ruin Arsa is a captivating story, with plenty of twists to keep readers engaged. We learn more about Ciarán and Aodhán’s past as it comes back to haunt them, while they are trying to build a new life for themselves. There are themes of faith and religion, and love and loyalty that run through the story and motivate the different characters.
This book gets five stars from me! If you’ve enjoyed the Thunder On The Moor series by the same author you’ll definitely love this series! Or if you enjoy historical and time travel romance.

An adorable ghost story! Morgan experiences life after death though encounters with ghosts who had lived in her home for years, but she was unaware until she had her own near-death experience. She entrusts her friend Savvy with her secret to make sure she hasn’t gone crazy, only to learn Savvy has a gift as well. Not being your typical scary or “help the dead pass on” ghost story, this one was very sweet. Jonathan and Elisabeth were great ghost hosts in helping Morgan navigate her new gift.

The story that Kate MacInnis has created here is phenomenal! Morgan is a very likable, busy ER nurse, who is recovering from brain aneurysm surgery and now can see ghosts! When reading the synopsis, I fell hard for the line, “Just because you haven’t seen a ghost, it doesn’t mean they aren’t around. You can’t see germs either, but you know they exist everywhere,” because as a nurse I know it’s true! When I first started this book, it took me a minute to get over the fact that our main character, Morgan had brain aneurysm surgery and she was back working full time in a busy Emergency room. Once I got past my hang up, I really enjoyed the book and all the spooky things Morgan experienced. The characters, alive and dead are a hoot! And there is even a little romance thrown into the mix. I look forward to the next book for sure!

This book is the third in a series. While this book could be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading the whole series first. There is a lot of back story that would be confusing in this book. I really enjoyed this book and all of the series. I briefly wondered if people waking up alive in the modern world might get old in this series. But it definitely did not. I loved reading more of Ciaran and Caitlin’s story as well as more about his brother Aodhan. The author kept me captivated as I learned about the high priest Ruadhan and his need to avenge his goddess. This book is worth every single minute, and I loved it!

Distant Heart Sounds (Nurse Morgan #1)Distant Heart Sounds by Kate MacInnis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Morgan is a nurse who works in the ER department of a hospital. Due to a near death experience, she is noticing some weird things. Morgan can all of a sudden see and hear those others cannot. Since she works in a hospital, there are many dead people around and for some odd reason Morgan can detect when someone is about to die or has just died. She also can communicate with said “ghosts”. On top of that she can now see auras.

A new doctor starts working at the hospital. He is a dreamy breathtaking man named Caleb. Morgan notices him straight away and he notices her just as fast. It seems as if he has some abilities as well and realized that Morgan might too. They seem to constantly run into each other and have a strong magnetic tension between them as well.

I really enjoyed this book for multiple reasons. The utmost reason is the main character’s age. A lot of books focus on younger characters. Characters just entering adulthood seem to be the most popular. Morgan is almost 40 and has been in her field of work for 20 years making it much more relatable as an adult.

I also loved the banter. There was humour, drama, romance. I loved the way the author wrote Morgan with different relationships with her co-workers.

Distant Heart Sounds (Nurse Morgan #1)Distant Heart Sounds by Kate MacInnis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Morgan is an experienced ER nurse, having over 20 years under her belt. Within the past three months, she’s had surgery to repair a brain aneurysm and things just haven’t been the same since. It starts out with a feeling, a tingling sensation, then progresses to much more. Is there someone in her house? She grabs the baseball bat and makes sure she’s alone…but is she really??
Trauma has a way of changing things in a person. Morgan’s been through a lot and her friend and co-worker Dr. Savannah thinks she’s come back to work too soon. The ER bustles with trauma and one day it smacks Morgan in the face when she realizes she is talking to someone who is dead! She can hear them, feel them, and sometimes see them. Is she going crazy?
Then Dr. Carter starts working at the hospital with her. Oh, he’s quite the hunk and all the girls are drooling over him. He sees things too. Maybe this isn’t as weird as it sounds….

This was a fun book to read! I am a former nurse who had to retire due to trauma. I’ve been in “haunted” hospital rooms so I could identify with some of the things that Morgan experienced. I’m still not fully certain that this isn’t all in my head but maybe one day we’ll know more! A very enjoyable book that had me longing to go back to the bedside!! I look forward to reading more books in this series.

This book was cute, spooky, and intriguing. My first book by this author, and I am already looking forward to the next. The story follows Morgan, and emergency center nurse who after a near death experience, has the ability to see ghosts. Couple that with a new doctor at the emergency center and you have a whirlwind of murder mystery, romance, spooky situations, and the comradery that comes with working in a high stress environment. So much was going on in the book that sometimes I had to double back. Parts were funny, parts were cute, and parts were spooky. In general, I did enjoy this book as a nice and relatively low stress read. Now on to the next!

This was a new author for me but came as a recommendation from one of my best friends. We tend to like the same books so I had a feeling I would love it. My assumption was correct. This book grabbed me from the beginning, and I couldn’t put it down. I laughed so hard throughout this book I cried. While it is a paranormal romance there are some also some spooky moments that you won’t expect. Don’t worry. You won’t be terrified, but you will be shocked because you never see it coming at you. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Do your friends a favor and recommend it to them. Better yet, purchase it as a gift for them. They will thank you later.
