The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery – Review by Makaela Patterson

This book was very interesting to read. As you keep reading you find yourself looking deep within. Some of the thoughts I took away from this book is that you have to know your own worth and if your not there itches next step is you. It starts with you. Take action on your self love journey Sometimes your mind can be your own problem you can be toxic to yourself. Easier said than done to re work your brain to think more positive I know. This book is such a touchy topic, and can be such a sore spot for people to talk about. One of the things I like about her book is that she makes the books very funny and light hearted kicking off your self Discovery and journey to loving yourself.

I don’t really read a lot of self-help books but this is one I’d definitely recommend. I’ve always been a skinny girl but have in the past few years become much more concerned with how I look. This book really helped me think about the way I think about my body and how that connects with other parts of my life. I loved the addition of the journalling prompts spread out throughout the book and the 365 daily prompts at the end, and the writing style is exactly like chatting with the author over coffee – girl next door and all. Highly recommended.

The Fat Girls Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery is a book you need to read. Although this book is primarily a body positive book it can be about anything in yourself that you have decided you do not like. Ms. Montgomery points out in this book how that is a “choice”. Of course, we all want to say…well that’s easy to say but how do you do it. What are the mechanics of making a different choice? In this book Ms. Montgomery takes you on a journey that will lead you into learning how to do that. She teaches you the mechanics if you are listening with your heart and mind. The language is a little rough at times, but I think it reflects a very real person that is talking to you in a very real way. Not dressed up and all Grammarly but plain and simple, and down and dirty. I feel like it reflects the heart of someone who has a very real desire to help people find out where happiness can be found. Let K.L. Montgomery show you how you are so much more “than the sum of your parts.”

Wow, just Wow, I really felt like this book, this author was really talking straight too me! K.L. Montgomery who refers to herself as Krista in her book is a ‘Kindred Spirit’. This is definitely not just another self-help book, it is much more than that, if like the blurb says, “Do you wonder if you’ll ever be happy with your body? then I recommend this book.
It is written in the first person almost as though Krista is talking to you personally, just chatting as friends as it has a casual feel to the writing which I liked and felt was right for this book. The book is divided into bite size chapters with clear headings and each one deals with a particular subject at the end of each chapter is a journaling assignment for the reader to work on.
Krista introduces us to ‘Journaling’ in an early chapter and this is what makes this book unique, as it is gives the book an interactive feel and gets us, as the reader involved and thinking about our own experiences and how we can change for the better. Krista is very clear throughout the book that, “it’s indeed your mind that needs to change, not your body”. “IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO BE PRETTY” is another saying which is repeated throughout the book. She reaffirms her positive sayings throughout the book.
Krista talks us through ‘deprogramming’ in one chapter and she introduces us to ‘Body Positivity or ‘BoPo’ as she refers to it. I love the fact that Krista is honest and talks openly about her own experiences which made me feel as though I was not alone in my thinking and that someone felt the same, this kept me engaged in the book from beginning to end and I read it in hours not days.
I have also referred back to certain chapters and feel that having read it cover to cover the use of easily identified chapters means the parts that are specific to you, you can refer back to. I love the fact that at then end you can download and print a certificate to, “remind yourself of your commitment to loving your body”. You can also join Krista’s ‘Fat Girl Tribe’, on Facebook and the book ends with a section of daily ‘BoPo’ Meditations which enables the reader to continue their journey, each day has an affirmation to be read and reflected on.
As Krista observes at the end of her book, changing ones mindset and learning to love your body is not an overnight thing. The, “meditations are meant to keep your focus on all things body positive”. I could go on raving about this book for hours but really you need to read it for yourselves to understand how inspirational Krista is and how her advice in this book can really help you.
Therefore I can not recommend this book highly enough, a definite must read for anyone wanting to achieve a more positive body image!
So if as the blurb says, “Have you ever struggled to love your body? then yes I definitely agree that, “YES “YOU NEED THIS BOOK. NOW”!

This is a must read book for everyone, especially if you have self image issues. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I started reading this book, but this book gave me something to think about. I don’t have to settle and this book gave me some great ideas about self image and attitude. I love the narrative when K.L. Is talking to you like a girlfriend. I’m not much for writing, but the exercises were stimulating and help give me a different perspective. So me new outlook on this year is to be better to myself and try not to sweat the small stuff. Life throws us enough curveballs we shouldn’t bring more on ourselves. Thank you Krista Lynne for the insightful words of wisdom. I look forward to continuing down this healing path for the foreseeable future.

This is not a self help book but a self love book.

This isn’t the type of book I normally read but took more from it than I thought I would.
Yes, it is aimed at plus sized women but I believe that everyone should try to love their body because it’s the only one we get get and although it is a long process, this book will give you some essential tips to help you achieve that. It opened my eyes to some issues plus sized women go through and I have learned valuable lessons in what is appropriate to say to friends and family when they say things about their weight.

This isn’t just a book, it’s a self love journal and a self love bible.

I related to this book in almost every aspect. Its a must read for all girls/ladies/women. Its a book showing us how to go about having positive self body image and gives us the tools to do so thru music, journals and meditation. The work has to be done to see results but I truly believe that these are valuable tools that anyone can use to have a better vision of themselves. This book can pertain to fat people, skinny people, and everything in between. It may be uncomfortable if you are really truthful with yourself but the results will be amazing. The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L Montgomery is a book that makes you think. A LOT! For that reason I wanted to hate it, I was able to relate to so much of what she was saying.

I found myself relating to things I had never consciously thought and certainly never verbal said out loud until last night when I mentioned to my husband that I had been reading this book and how much work I have to do. This is one book I plan on reading more than once.

I’m a large woman, have been overweight since puberty hit and my younger daughter is following down the same path. I know I have asked her if she really wanted the food she was about to eat and talked to her about making better decisions. That ends today.

I highly recommend this book and suggest you read it no matter your size or your relationship with food.

The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery is a book I picked up with slight hesitation – there are loads of body positivity books and self-help books out there and I was wondering what would be the difference … what would be the purpose of picking up another one that would end up collecting dust (well, digital dust in this case) … BUT I was wrong, it is actually an interactive book that will start you on a journey IF you are open to it and why wouldn’t you? You have nothing to lose … so I took the first step and started with the journaling and already the first journaling assignment was like a kick in my stomach … it was debilitating to realize where we come from and how long we have been on that destructive path … and even when I thought that I have come a long way, there is still such a long way to go …
I will be working with this book for the rest of the year like the writer hopes that we would do, as she says it is not a quick journey or change of mind set, it takes time and it takes unconditional love … I also loved the song list, I have added all those songs to my playlist AND I started my journaling in a digital journal so that I can always have an access to the entries as it lives on the cloud …
Thank you Krista Lynne Montgomery for giving us a book that goes beyond the self-help industry handbooks!

This is something that I have struggled with my entire life and I even got to the point where I just simply didn’t care. I didn’t care what other people thought, if they wanted to stare or even talk . But come to find out the weight I was putting on was due to severe heart problems. Needless to say now I do care. It’s a fight every single day to make sure I’m staying on track and eating super clean and healthy as I can. Love Yourself no matter what. I loved this book and came away with a whole new attitude. So thank you for that. I needed a reminder and I definitely got. This is one of those books I’m going to read over and over again. I’m actually buying it for my daughter as well. I’ve already started on doing the journal. I can’t simply recommend this book or this author enough.

5 out of 5 stars

The Fat Girls Guide to loving your body by K.L. Montgomery is a great story that contains one-part humor, one-part journal, one-part recipe for self-love. Mix it all together, and you’ll come out the other side with a greater appreciation for both what’s on the outside AND what’s on the inside.

I have to say I was always skinny until I had my first child 29 years ago and I have had a problem with my weight ever since. I also have medical issues that seem to stop me from losing the weight especially when the doctors prescribe meds that make you gain weight So, this book really hit it dead on even if I didn’t care about body-shamers. I loved how the author talks to you as a friend and helps you with body positive knowledge that knocked it out of the ball-park.

This was a great book and I simply enjoy reading Ms. Montgomery’s work and look forward to more of her books….

By K.L. Montgomery. This book completely captured my heart. I’ve always had body issues and this book just felt written just for me. Now I’m a person who tends to not love myself or my body and this book really spoke some hard facts. I’d agree with some of the reviews out there, this book is for everyone no matter what your body type is or the reasons you don’t like about yourself. This book is an inspirational journey. I’m already a fan of this author and while it’s a bit different from previous works it’s just as amazing. I can see the thought put into this project and I appreciate the effort that was made because it’s truly incredible. If I could give more stars I would but I’ll give five of the biggest stars I can find.

The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery was an inspiring and emotional read. I did not know that I needed to read this book as much as I did. I started the book because the last few months I have been on this journey of self discovery and the next step seemed to be self care in regards to my body. I enjoyed all of the references and information embedded in the book. The humor throughout was a welcome relief, there are so many self help books that are just fluffy or don’t come across as genuine as this book does. I definitely want to spend the next year doing the journal entries. I did not do them the first time around because I could tell from the beginning that I needed to read this book and get the big picture before I started dissecting myself. This will become a welcome reread time and time again not just for the journal entries but for the reminders of the impact that our everyday lives have on our mental state.

The book helped me to look at myself in a different way. K.L. Montgomery takes on all of the old norms of what a woman should look like. As long as you are willing to put in the work journaling and be honest K.L. Montgomery’s book can help to make a change in how you think of yourself and how you view others. It is not an easy read or an easy concept, but it is definitely worth taking the journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to love themselves a little more.

The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body is completely different from anything that K.L. Montgomery has written before but it’s most certainly a message that hits home. It’s also the best book I have picked up since the new year has started. This is a book to teach us to love our bodies whether we’re fat, skinny, or somewhere in-between. Women are the most self conscience about their appearance and this book tells you to embrace you and your body. I am now fully aware about what I say about myself in front of my children because they are watching. There aren’t enough words to describe how much I loved this book and the message that it gives.

The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery is an inspiring book written in hopes of making readers come to see worth and value in the body they live in. I feel as if seeing your body in a positive manner is really important. It is so easy to go down the rabbit hole of depression and self-loathing while picking apart all the things that you see wrong with yourself. I like that this book is motivational and encouraging. I found it easy to relate too because of the personal experiences throughout the whole book. I love this author’s style of writing and I found myself giggling out loud several times. I have always loved to journal, it has always been therapeutic for me. Throughout this book there is journaling assignments, they may seem silly at first, some may be hard to do… but do them. They help so much. I will say that there were parts of the book that were slow and I struggled to keep interest, but those were far and few between. At the end of the book I’m not going to say “oh yea I LOVE MY BODY” but just like Montgomery said… it is a long process, it isn’t going to happen overnight. I will continue to work on my body image and one day I’ll get to where I’m going.

This book was a joy to read, I absolutely loved it! I love Ms Montgomery anyway she is one of my favourite authors and I have read many of her books but this one was different in that it was like delving into someone else’s life who you have never met personally and thinking about how much you actually have in common. There were things in this book that I have probably said and felt on a daily basis. I loved the way the authors amazing writing style came across even in something that is so different to her normal books – I am so glad I chose to start my 2020 reading journey with this one! There were definitely some great inspirational quotes in this book that I will use from now on!
I 100% recommend this book – it really is a brilliant read and definitely not one you will be disappointed with!

The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery is an inspiring read. This is one of my fave romcom writers and she writes as if she is talking with a friend and telling her personal story. This is a book hitting the heavy topics of dealing with having a positive body image but with a fun side to it. She includes different journaling activities and some daily encouragement. I like that she is honest and states early on she is not a medical professional but that if work is put in that a more positive body image can be gained. We are not all size zero and we have to love ourselves in order to keep a positive lifestyle and healthy relationships. She has everything from a playlist and different ways to encourage the process. Montgomery is honest and says this is not an overnight fix but something that has to be done consistently and everyday to make a difference. I look forward to following through with this process this year and see what changes at the end of the year for myself.

I’ll be honest, at first I was like, ‘Is this book really going to help me?’ For Nearly 20 years, I’ve struggled with my fat and hating my own body, but, I figured I would give this an opportunity, the worst that could happen I spent some time reading a book and nothing changed. BUT, I was wrong, This was helpful, It did open my eyes, a few moments were like a good slap in your face (Think Cher and her “Schnap Out of It”) I loved the journaling assignments, and even the pain and the tears some of them brought with them, but It has helped me learn to love myself, which is something I’ve struggled with since i was ten. I just turned 30 back in April, and I hated and loathed myself so much, missed out on so much, but this book, honestly, and K.L.’s way she writes, (and curses) spoke to me so much, to me it felt as if an older version of myself was telling me to fix things and to fix them now before I did miss out on life. I recommend this to every girl who has every struggled with loving herself and her own self image. You will not be disappointed!

There’s a lot of useful information and processes that if understood and followed one can learn how to love themselves. The author has a few pages where she wants you to keep a journal and gives you assignments.
This book isn’t just for the “ fat girls “ the book touches on a lot of different body images. It’s just a way to help you learn to love yourself.

5 ++++++++ STARS

I just don’t feel right rating this book using stars…It deserves so much more than a few stars. I started this book thinking ok it’s getting close to supper time, I’ll go ahead and start it then pick it back up later. Well that did not happen. Hubby got leftovers which he even had to warm up himself and I read this book in a little over 2 hours. I then sat and stared for another half hour until hubby asked if I was ok.

I can not even put into words how this touched me, like I mean straight in the heart, it’s like she crawled in my head and stayed there for the last 30-odd years taking every thought and feeling I’ve experienced. I’ve since bought one copy for one daughter and was telling another daughter that I was going to buy it for her and she ordered it while we spoke. Next up…Buy the paperback, I want to go back and follow every instruction given and start the journaling I’ve wanted to start for years and didn’t know where to begin, KL Montgomery has given me that direction.

I changed my lifestyle almost 5 years ago and have literally lived it since, just wanted to eat healthy and get rid of preservatives and such, the side effect of that was losing over 100 lbs and have kept it off within 10lbs or so. It still never occurred to me to love my body, you can change your physical lifestyle all day long but the feelings inside are habits that are hard to break and this guide has made me look at things in a whole different light.

I love this Author, she has written 2 of my favorite books ever and now I can say that that number has risen to 3..

Thank you for waking me up, making me smile, making me giggle a few times, making me cry, making me look at myself differently, and allowing me to get to know you.

So I gave this book 5 stars because that’s how we rate on our reviews but as I said, this book deserves so much more than stars!

Montgomery has become a favorite. This book was one I wasn’t expecting from her but boy am I ever glad she tackled. Like her other works, it feels like you are having a good conversation with a cup of coffee with a good friend. It flows well. It’s practical. And that doesn’t keep it from reaching up and giving the backside kicking you needed for the reminder of your worth. Hands down, this is a must read for readers of all shapes, sizes, ages, gender. Do yourself a favor. Read it. Read it again. And then do something with the invaluable advice your friend has given you.

Here is a self-help guide that might actually work. Of course, you have to do the homework and just like with most things, this will work if you do.

I really liked the way Montgomery wrote this book. Like she’s talking to a friend. And don’t friends want their friends to be happy and healthy? This book makes me feel like Montgomery wants me to be happy. Happiness just may start with loving your own body! (Regardless of your current size!)

This book is easy to read and flows well, touching on many topics that affect a “fat girl” from hating body parts to media “expectations” to diets and fads. Many sections of this guide have “homework” or a journaling assignment. Can you read this book without doing the homework? Of course you can but if you truly want to love your body, do the work. That’s my ”Bopo Meditation”: Do the work.

I just finished reading this book and I have to say first off, BRAVO! Amazing read, and very eye opening and made me more self aware of things I think or say, as i have a 6 year old daughter who is watching and listening to everything.
Now I read in here that the author would like to hear from someone on the skinny side of things and I’ll start this off with saying, my whole life (I’m 32) I have been tiny. I’ve had 3 kids and being pregnant was the only time in my life the scale ever went over 100lbs. To me, that was a hard pill to swallow seeing the number go up so much every appointment as it was not a normal thing for me to see. I knew it was normal and needed and I didn’t change anything I was doing as I wanted to do the best for the growing child in me but it took until my 2nd pregnancy to get over the shock and just guess how much I grew.
My whole life i was labeled the skinny girl, told I needed to eat more , presumed to have an eating disorder etc and with that I can put myself in others shoes as, yes skinny people get bullied too. Not to the extremes I’ve read or heard about for those larger than me, but its all coming from the same malicious place.
This book has kicked me into wanting to journal with my 6 year old as she, unlike me, puts on weight at a speed I’m not used to personally or compared to her older & younger brothers and that’s ok because its her body as we are all different.. She’s beautiful, bright and doesn’t know or care how she looks and that’s my goal to keep with her into loving herself as we’ve never said a negative thing to her, as I remember what it feels like to hear things .
For years, I cried as I didn’t feel like a girl because I have little to no chest. I can go without a bra and no one would notice and I hated that, made me feel less than. Then when I started to accept the fact at age 15, my mom who was in the same boat genetically, got surgical breast lift procedures by Dr. Hyman in the New York City area and that started my plan for after I was done with having children that was a must do. She was happier, able to wear whatever she wanted and just seemed to be ‘whole’. I still get the urge to book an appointment just to see, but I have a Husband who tells me often he loves me for me and its starting to sink in that I’m perfect how I am.

For me, I feel genetics do play a part as the majority of my family is thin, I remember the story of my maternal grandmother she was newly pregnant with her 8th child and she was 98lbs, so that plays a role and who are we to judge something that many struggle with and have almost zero control over. You can’t change your genetic makeup but this book helps teach to embrace you for you and to love who you are.
This feels like rambling now but I don’t care. No matter your body type, read this book, do the journals and love yourself for who you are because there’s only one you here.

The Fat Girl's Guide to Loving Your BodyThe Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L. Montgomery a positive five-star read. I have enjoyed several of this authors works and always found them to be body positive but this just brought it to the next level, we get to hear the author tell us about their own story, and if like me you struggle with your weight, it just adds an extra voice to the one in your head, and to me that extra voice is a welcome one as its being nice for a change. I enjoyed the style of writing as its not your typical in this type, there is a lightness, freshness and something extra as well. I have read this from cover to cover and devoured it, but I am sure I will be dipping in and out as its filled with messages that you can take day by day as well as information, journals and story’s about how to love yourself no matter who you are or what your size.

What a great book to start off the New Year with. It is a message I want to take forward with me through the year, and the rest of my life. This topic is one that doesn’t just touch close to home, it smashes in the front door.
The Fat Girl’s Guide to Loving Your Body by K.L Montgomery is a bit different from her other books- but still has her wit, humour and positive messages stamped all over it.
This book is like sitting down and having a coffee and chat with a close friend. It lays everything out and doesn’t pull any punches- but in a really helpful and uplifting way. It gives inspiring advice, helpful hints, motivational quotes, and even a kick@ss playlist to go with your new attitude.
So, if like me, you have struggled with body image issues, and loving the skin you’re in- then this is definitely the book you need to help adjust your mindset and give you the positive inspiration to move forward with a new perspective and respect for yourself.
Thought provoking, real, and inspiring!

Thank you, Ms. Montgomery!
