The Sound of Love is the first book in The Sound series by Maria Watts. This is the first book I have read by this author, but definitely won’t be the last. This book had me hooked from the very first page and I couldn’t put it down until I read the last. This is not your typical rockstar romance, it shows the good and bad side of following and being involved with a boy band. This story features Nina, who has a giant crush on the lead singer of The Funky Guys, Chris Mulligan. When she accidentally get the chance to meet him, and they have chemistry, thing progress from there. As Nina follows Chris out on the road, choices must be made, but she is young and Nina struggles with new experiences trust issues. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

The Sound of Love (The Sound series #1) by Maria Watts was a okay read that shows a different side of the teen crushes, and the dreamy boy bands of the 90’s.
My first read by this author, I didn’t know what I was getting into. Though I read YA, it’s more fantasy, dystopian and paranormal. I don’t read much of the contemporary romance types. And this book again showed me why I don’t dwell much into that genera. Why? Well like others I have read, there is a bit of a unrealism to it, yes I know it’s fiction, but if you don’t have some semblance of realisisim for a story, that’s set in the real world, then it makes the story feel silly and unconnecting. And for me, parts of this tale were just that.
The first half of this book was great. Now I wasn’t sold of the whole “I was giving the wrong number, so I punched in some random ones, and low and behold, it worked!” So yeah that was, so far-fetched that it was cringe worthy, but, I put it aside cause Nina and Chris’s conversation were very interesting, fun and sweet. Nina called Christ out on his BS, and Christ was learning about what being a normal teen is like. It reminded me of the days, before internet, and social media. There was almost a cute innocents to it, that just warmed your heart.
Then, she met him, things weren’t as they were one the phone. I’m not going to say what, cause I don’t want to ruin the story. But there’s a personality shift, and frankly, it blindsided me. We spent so much time learning about someone, that who wasn’t not only who Nina thought, but me. But at the same time, I know why it was done, and I’m going to give the authors propbs, for leading both of us stray. Bravo.
And that’s where I’m going to leave this review. It’s one of those books where I have just as many likes as dislikes, and I don’t’ want to go down a rabbit hole. So let’s just end this with my overall impression.
As a whole, this book isn’t bad. It matches its target audiences, the writing is smooth, professionally well crafted and, has a very nice rhythm to it. I liked how even though I had problems with scenes, or plot points, the writing kept me well engaged and pulled into the story. I truly believe this is a good book to give your teen to read, especially if they’re currently obsessed with a band or singer. It will show them what goes on once the lights of the stage goes off and that mask of perfect is stripped away.
In ending, this books gets my recommendation and gets my approval

The Sound of Love is the first book in the series by Maria Watts. Her characters are fully developed. There is a female main character Nina who we follow in her life choices the good and the bad. This story is a about Nina who is a Southampton’s girl. Her life was an easy line. She was a typical teenager who has a crush on a lead singer. Chris happens to be the lead singer that Nina has a crush on. At the concert she attended she got the phone number of the lead singer. They formed a relationship between phone calls and text messages. Relationships are hard enough for high school girls and now add long distance relationship to the mix. Will Nina and Chris ever become a couple? If they do become a relationship what will the tone be? It is a story of teen crushes, road trips, and hard life situations. I really like this coming of age book and I would recommend this book to everyone (especially if you have girls).

The Sound of Love (The Sound series Book 1) By Maria Watts. Just when you think having all your dreams come true would make life perfect, this story gives readers a look at the other side of that coin when reality hit. I really enjoyed this story even though it was a bit far fetched, but that’s the thing with fiction you can do whatever you’d like. But it’s not the idea of the story that’s hard to believe just a few of the things that happened. Most girls have a boy band favorite and dream about the day that they’ll come sweep us off our feet. But as Nina finds out in this book there’s always pros and cons to dreams becoming reality. We watch Nina and Chris grow in this story, at times I forgot I was reading and just wanted to smack them but over all I really liked the characters and the storyline. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or dragging. I read well into the night. If you’re looking for a teenager romance that’s a bit different pick this one up. I’m giving this book a four star review.

The Sound of Love by Maria Watts is the first book in The Sound series. The story is about a teen girl, Nina, who is head over heels a boy band and somehow meets one of the members, Chris. This story is set in the 1990’s when boy bands were really a big deal. The two have an instant connection and she ends up traveling on tour with the band. Of course, this leads to all sorts of highs and lows. I thought I would like this more because of the nostalgia but the story seemed very far fetched to me. Nina is sixteen and naive. I cannot think of any parent that would let their teen daughter travel with a bunch of hormonal boys on her own. This is not for younger teens but I think older teens would enjoy. Also, it is a bit of a cautionary tale of young love. Overall, a fairy tale romance with some reality thrown in here and there.

The Sound Of Love (The Sound Series Book 1) Maria Watts 5 out of 5 stars
I never should have started this in the middle of the night. While I would never choose to pick up a book I didn’t think would interest me, I never expected to be so enthralled in this storyline that I would need to stay up for “just one more chapter” over and over again from the very first page. When the book began it was a different feel for me as our main character is young and her narration came off as such. Quickly I became more comfortable with Nina and well, I soon needed to know what was going to happen next. As the book progressed I found myself struggling to like Chris as a character, he was infuriating and his relationship with Nina was the same. Somehow though, I was still drawn to the two of them, I feel like the first several chapters gave us a good sense of who Chris and Nina are without the influence of fame, and despite the trials and tribulations they endured through the lense of fame the character development was so strong that you wanted to see them through. I am surprised by the role that Nina’s parents play throughout this story with the picture that was painted of them as parents at the beginning of the novel, but really that is just an opinion and has no real influence on the strength of the book. I would be curious to see what happened after this story ended, and I would love to have more of Nathan’s character. Overall I loved The Sound Of Love, it was intriguing yet frustrating, once I started I needed to see it through with as little stopping as I could. It’s indicated that this is the first book in The Sound Series so I will definitely be looking for more to come.

This was my first time reading anything from Maria Watts. I was drawn into the idea of this surrounding a band and its teenage fans in the 90’s because, well the 90’s rocked, and I grew up in the prime of the 90’s, at least most of my middle school and younger high school years were the later 90’s. I figured I would be able to relate to the main character quite a bit along the way. I was for the most part, in first half of the book, correct. Then I was so wrong.
The concept here was good. It was well developed. We all as young girls, no matter the decade, had boyband posters plastered on our walls. We often dreamed of a chance encounter where we could run off with said dream boy and live out this fantasy. We also knew that the chance of this were highly unlikely. HIGHLY. This was a bit farfetched for me. Even for a novel. I get that sometimes miracles and freak things happen, but this was a stretch, a big stretch. I wrote that off as some creative writing though. Knocked it down to a four-star in my head right around there and kept going. I didn’t really hit me to a point where I couldn’t keep reading.
Then, we get to this part where our MC, Nina goes on tour with her dream boy, Chris. Nina is sixteen. Maybe it is because now I am a mother, but no way in hades am I letting my sixteen year old go on tour just like that. Most certainly not with an eighteen year old, who is hormonal and has the whole world in his hands and at his disposal. Nope. It was just all so farfetched that I could not get into the story. I wanted to, but I couldn’t no matter how hard I tried. I would like to see a rewrite with some more of a moral to the story. Maybe it was something I missed because I was hung up on the, this is impossible, and I need to reread it. Not something that I have ruled out by any means, but something to consider.

Chris is the lead singer of the band The Funky Boys, Nina ends up finding Chris’s phone # and they start to talk all the time on the phone and grow closer. As they get to know each other she finds herself being pulled into his world. When Chris’s band comes to her area their connection is overwhelming.
She ends up going on tour with Chris and his band and see what his life entails. It’s definitely not what she had pictured. Can she deal with the groupies and the hectic life of a Rockstar? Can these two make things work or will Nina go back to her own world?
There is so much to The Sound of Love that really pulled me in. To read about their journey and the realizations that Nina has about life. Chris is torn, he wants Nina but he doesn’t want to change.
Nina she was the innocent that gets pulled into a shocking and wild lifestyle. She would allow Chris to hurt her over and over again and still go back. Chris at times was not nice and I wanted to smack him quite a few times. He was spoiled due to the quick rise in fame and I think he felt entitled.
The thing about this story that pulled me in is that this is two are teenagers discovering their first love, they both come from totally different worlds. I was pulled right in with their story. And who hasn’t fantasized about going on tour with her rocker crush? oh my what I wouldn’t do for that. What a dream. 1-click and find out for yourself. Thank you Maria Watts for a good read that brought back memories and fantasies for me.
