Planting Seeds: Growing Mindful Children Through Yoga by Janice Pratt and Lenora Degen is aimed at giving parents and teachers some different concepts to engage children and teach them some valuable life skills.
The book ‘plants’ different concepts on using movement, science, nature, and growth to help a child find focus, concentration, mindfulness, compassion, empathy, and breathing better. This is done through Yoga techniques, planting seeds, affirmations, games, moving activities, mindfulness activities, and even songs.
We learn about Yoga principles, Yoga movements, Plant growth, and much more. I think this is a great tool that has a different approach to raising healthy children- body, mind, and spirit.
Well worth the read!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Janice Pratt and Lenora Degen!

Not only does this book give you insights on how to teach yoga to children but it also gives you ideas on how to teach them to be more grateful in general. It’s a very simple read and you can change each lesson to suit your needs. It is a very resourceful book and gives you ideas for crafts and books to read in relation to the lesson.

I really enjoyed this! I like how the author makes a connection between yoga and plants. Very cool! I loved reading the lesson plans. The author puts ideas for different ages and details everything very well. I could easily picture it all in my head. This shows how to have a 6 week class for kids.

There are great affermations and breathing techniques throughout. Plus games and songs! I am enjoying this as its is giving me all kinds of ideas to do with the grandkids.

My only issue is that I wish they had included pictures of all the different yoga poses they suggest. Some are self explanatory (like the frog) but others like mountain, fish, star and windmill are unknown to me. I have only done a few yoga poses do I will have to look them up.

“Planting Seeds” by Janett Pratt is a great way to help any adult delving into yoga and mindfulness with children. With meticulously structured lesson plans and captivating activities, this book serves as avguide for instilling healthy habits and positive attitudes. Pratt expertly intertwines the metaphor of planting seeds throughout, emphasizing self-care, gratitude, and kindness. The exercises, tailored for children aged 5 to 13, are accessible and thoughtfully crafted, even for novices. Having been part of a study about the impacts of practicing yoga as a middle grade girl, I have seen the profound effects of mindfulness on self-esteem, academic performance, and self-acceptance with this age group. This book provides an invaluable resource for nurturing mindfulness and fostering holistic well-being in young minds.

What a great book and tool for teachers. There are many great things in this book to teach our children, eating healthy, gratitude, lessons about how things grow after planting and so much more. I really liked how with each lesson there are activity pages to match that lesson for the kids to do, and throughout each lesson there are so many references and resources to use to aid in the lesson. This honestly reminds me of when I was in after school care when I was in elementary school and it brought back very fond memories. There are things in this book as and adult now that I have learned, such as,

“A good amount of oxygen we inhale is used by our brains. When we are upset or scared, our breathing becomes short and shallow. Our thinking brain can shut down.”

I never really thought about how our thinking is off when we are scared or upset, which makes sense because everyone always says to “take deep breaths” and the minute you start taking deep breaths you start thinking more clearly. I wish I would have realized or learned that earlier on. Definite recommendation for teachers.

Here within this book are ways to teach yoga and meditation to kids something that Lenora has a passion with. Mindfulness through yoga is not just for kids but for adults alike as it sharpens your focus and strengthens your attention. It also encourages self-esteem and in creating a positive self-image.
Planting Seeds is a 6-week curriculum series that sets about giving the teacher a tool on how to teach kids to become mindful through learning yoga in the classroom. It sets out ideas and themes and plans for lessons and activities.
It is easy to read and looks easy enough to implement. It is devised to be used for kids aged between 4 – 12 years but would be easily adapted for other ages.
It is an original and unique book that would help anyone one looking to do this kind of thing. There is a lot to teach but to also learn from at the same time.
Very clever.

As a homeschooling grandmother, I found this to be an engaging and insightful resource to use with my grandson. For obvious reasons I can’t do yoga anymore but we have used videos to work on it with him. The activities and information in the book really help to get that mindset on the right track to be happy and healthy for an anxious child. We wilol be adding this as a fun activity to our daily curriculum.

Since I can remember, I have been a reader, often having several books going at the same time. If anyone was my teacher, it was the wonderful authors who shared their hearts and souls with me through their stories. My first story was published in 1999. Today I work on stories that talk about the amazing power that children have and the mark they can make on the world. I hope to inspire children to feel their truth and know that they can make a difference.

My yoga partner and I created this Lesson Plans for Teachers” series to help parents, teachers, and homeschool facilitators encourage children of all ages to realize their potential as creative and productive members of our global world.

It is my mission to bring the benefits of yoga to people of all ages. I believe there is a form of yoga for everybody on the planet. Working as a graphic designer for the ” Yoga for Kids- Move, Breathe & Make Life a Breeze” series, I’ve had an opportunity to bring two loves of my life together – yoga and designing!

Amaleigha Makes A New Friend
By: Janice Pratt

This is such a sweet children’s book. This focuses on Amaleigha and her pen pal. Her class has decided to become penpals with children in Ukraine. This seems like just a normal assignment, but what happens is absolutely heartwarming. This book touches on current events and does an amazing job making it very relatable to children. I definitely recommend reading this book as it is completely enjoyable and I think many children would like it.

This story was really one I enjoyed sharing with my niece and nephew so much, so I’m not sure who enjoyed it more. It had a very nostalgic vibe for me – writing to a penpal in elementary. The chance to get to know someone from some place different from you. The classroom aspect sharing all the cultural information was very informative. But, what I appreciated even more though is how difficult the subject of unrest and war is, approaching the subject in a manner the younger kids would be able to understand. I would absolutely recommend this book!

Amaleigha Makes a Friend is a wonderful and inspiring children’s book. This is not the first book about Amaleigha I have read to my son. We love them- the stories are deep and meaningful topics, written in a light and meaningful way for children. The illustrations are bright and colorful. We hardly got a couple pages in before my son was asking me to google things- Is that a real place? What does it look like? What does that food look like? Can we try it? Can we celebrate Christmas that long? Did the war happen? On and On. I loved it- this story really got his little mind running and he did not slow down. We didn’t even finish the book before he had me messaging his teacher to ask about setting up a pen pal for his class in another country. I will always recommend this author, and have passed along this book to my son’s 2nd grade teacher. Thank you for another great book!

Good story about pen pals…brings back memories of me and my pen pals. One in school and one as an adult before social media took off. Great way to learn about other people and countries. Good information about how war affects children and families even when the crisis is somewhere else. Cute illustrations as well.

Amaleigha is a young girl in 3rd grade and one day her teacher, Mr Bowles, announces that they are going to be getting a pen pal and writing to students of a school in Ukraine and everyone is excited about this opportunity, so they cannot wait to see who is going to be their pen pal. Amaleigha is paired with a girl called Vova, she is given a card with some details about Vova and she writes her first letter asking some questions and showing her interest about learning about Vova’s life and soon the class’s letters are ready and sent off.

As the class are waiting for their letters, they start to learn more about Ukraine and its traditions, culture and life in general and this helps them to write their letters, that is until one day when their letters spoke about something other than excitement to learn more about each other, the possibility of a war with Russia.

What does this mean for Amaleigha and Vova’s friendship through letters and how will this war impact them both? This is a book which talks about current events in a way that is fun, but also serious at the same time and is a wonderful way to show how to handle the emotions that go along with them, it is brilliant for all ages and well worth a read.

This was a cute book that I enjoyed reading with my nieces ages 10 and 11. Each of them took turns reading, each did very well so it was easy to read and understand. This story actually really had them wanting to also have a pen pal. It’s a story that also had us learning new things about a different place so that was fun, it also had some difficult subject matter but this author handled it wonderfully. My nieces really got hooked and it opened a lot of different conversations with them about different parts of the world. The art work wasn’t every page but when it was there it was colorful and well done.Over all we’d give this book a four star rating and my nieces would like more stories like this.

Amaleigha Makes a New Friend by Janice Pratt. I enjoyed this book so much. Its a great kids book but even as a old lady, I enjoyed it. Amaleigha’s class has decided to be pen pal’s with kids from other countries. When Amaleigha picks a young boy from Ukraine they become fast friends. Vova is 9 years old and loves going to school and playing with his friends. No one had a clue that while they were pen pals that a war would break out in Ukraine and Vova would go from a happy go lucky child to a child scared to death for him and his family. Bombs are going off all around him and his dad has signed up with the Ukraine Services. No knowing what might happen to his dad scares Vova the most. This is such a great book for ages 4 to 8 but like I said I think all ages will enjoy it. Such a educational, emotional read.

Amaleigha is given the opportunity to write to children in other countries by her teacher, Mr Bowles.

Before they are able to write to children in Ukraine, they learn more about the country, such as it is the second largest European country.

After learning a bit about the country, Amaleigha is excited to write to her pen pal to ask them questions about the country!

The day arrives where she is finally able to write to her pen pal! Mr. Bowles passes out notecards with names and Amaleigha writes to Vova. She tells him about her family, where she goes to school and even her favorite food.

They wait for the responses and sometime later, Amaleigha receives hers. Vova tells Amaleigha that they are learning about America in school and reading books by Ukrainian authors. He also explains about his daily life and that he may want to be an artist.

Reading this made me wish that we had done something similar to this when I was in school. It seems like a great way to discover more about a different country and how other people live.
In one correspondence, Amaleigha and other students read a letter that mentions war with Russia which causes the students to be worried about their pen pals and the people of Ukraine.

I went into this thinking it was going to be a short read. It was a lot more descriptive and an emotional roller coaster than I thought.

I learned a lot about Ukraine. War is scary and just because war is not happening around someone, doesn’t mean one shouldn’t stay informed or finds ways to help.

I love the concept of this book and I like that it encourages pen pals and learning about other countries/cultures. There are nice facts about Ukraine and I do think it’s a good book to start the conversation of the war over there. The book actually caused me to do my own research because the term “old country” was used frequently. I spoke to a couple people and we all see that phrase as like a third world country. I feel this is a good book for older kids because the mentioning of people getting shot when leaving their home might scare younger kids. The book is longer than most children stories but there illustrations are great and they make a nice break between pages.

Thought provoking. Informative. Inspirational. This is the first book I have read by the talented Janice Pratt and honestly, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect which led to a huge surprise.
Amaleigha is an American third grade student. Her teacher Mr. Bowels has exciting news about the class having pen pals across the world in the Ukraine. Throughout the book her class learns about the Ukraine, their customs and history between waiting for their next letters. Suddenly, Vova, her pen pal and several others are saying the same things that the news is. Russia has declared war on Ukraine, and they don’t know when they can write again. Determined to try and help Amaleigha and her class work together to help their new friends.
This book covers several levels of curiosity. About other countries outside your own, the customs and traditions of others, empathy for others, and finding ways to help when you feel too small to do anything. I read this book to my two sons, eleven and six, and they both started asking more questions, asking if it was real, if it was still happening and if we could do anything to help. This book helps children understand that just because we live in different places and do things differently it doesn’t mean we are different. Amaleigha instantly saw the similarities in her and Vova. The book doesn’t necessarily have an end, but it ends with a prayer. For the children, families, and people of Ukraine.
